Great preview of a great lens. Thank You.
really excited about this lens!
Thanks for showing the micro focus rail, I purchased one before this video was over.
A big thank you from Seattle. Fantastic review 🙂!
Thanks for a really informative video 👍
Absolutely love my EF 100MM F2.8 L MACRO IS, at first for macro work. And now I think it is even more incredible for head shots and architectural details, for example. So excited to know that when I switch to mirrorless, my fav lens will have an equally competent RF counterpart.
Nice review (as always, keep up the good work 😎). I liked that you also talked about accessories that go along with the circumstances. An idea to keep for all future reviews
Thanks for the reply, appreciate the feedback.
This was very helpful.
Great review ! I would just liked to see one shot or two for comparison against the EF 100 L.
It took two months waiting for this backordered lens, but I finally have mine and can't wait to use it. I came here mainly to find out what the SA ring does. Now I remember seeing that Spherical Aberration function in another video. I doubt I'll ever use it, but one never knows.
Canon colours 😍
Check out the colours of Sony a1 . Those are better than canon
I love how this is both a great product review and great mini macro tutorial. Though mentioned within the article, it would have been nice to explore further how the CA adjustment holds up in portraits vs a dedicated portrait lens and how the lens stacks up against its predecessor with some examples for each. Keep these best in class reviews coming!
Thanks for watching and for the feedback, glad you liked the mini macro tutorial. I always like including then when I can.
Nice review of a lovely lens. Iam unsure wether i like the SA switch.
I never knew that gadget at 4:43 existed (macro focus rail). Thank you for showing it👏👏👏
Thanks for watching. Macro can be tricky and tools like this make it a little bit easier. There are several brands and types of rails. Here is the link to the one we used in the video.

I wish you have included some portraits too
Thanks for the feedback. It is a very versatile lens. We decided to keep it macro orientated this episode however it does make a excellent portrait lens. Maybe a future episode?
@@DaveTCSTV a future episode would be great focused on portraits. Please. And thank you!
RF 85 1.2 is for portraits though?
thank you for a great review and the tips, would you provide some info on the equipment that was used.
Hi, thanks for the feedback. We used the Canon R5, tripod is the Vanguard VEO 3+ 263 AB, Focus rail is the Leofoto MP-150S and the reflector is a 22" 5 in 1.
Great review with lots of detail. I feel like getting one right away.
I also want to know the name and model of tripod you used for the review, looks quite interesting and multifunctional.
Thanks in advance for your revert
That lens is really good, definitely recommended. The tripod used is from Vanguard, very flexible design. Here is the link.

Dave, great video. What tripod model were you using?
Thanks for the comment. This is a tripod from Vanguard that is very flexible, great for our application in this video. Here is the link.

looks like a superb lens
I agree with you about the lack of a lens support collar, which you can get and install yourself. However reviews of that collar brought up problems of installation and overall dissatisfaction with the collar design. So, I'm just as happy to leave it out.
Thank you for the video. Used to have the EF version of this lens and trying to decide if I want to pick this up for my R5. Curious if you've explored using this for other non-macro applications like portraits. Would be interested in seeing how well it does at other photography.
I think it's a very versatile lens and not just for macro. We concentrated on using it for macro in this review but it does make an excellent portrait lens as well. Maybe a future episode?
@@DaveTCSTV That would be great. Thank you.
I put a deposit on this lens. I'm not in Canada so I couldn't purchase from your store. I hope to go to Calgary one day to take in the Stampede and Banff. Thanks for your videos.
When you do make sure you come say hi!
Great video. Thanks a lot. Which tripod was used ?
Thank you for watching, Here is the link to that tripod.

How do you get it to zoom, lol. I was expecting a control ring like the SA ring. But, nope.
But why should i upgrade besides the better IS on the r5?
Nice video there, btw where is Evelyn?
I’ll use it to replace the EF version in my negative scanning rig.
That makes two of us
Hi!
I want to know the name and model of tripod!!
Please!!!
I wish I could buy it but it wasn’t released yet for us average joes
SA control variations give only blurry pictures, even in the in-focus objects. So it's like having a very dirty front element and the pictures are only to be used for "artistic" purposes. I personally will keep it locked at 0 for 99.9% of shots.
Ouch, £1479 here I'm England. Think I'll stick with my EF L version for a while longer.
Is the RF 100mm a worthwhile replacement for the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS with an adapter? I have the EF version and the R5 has lots of resolution for cropping, so I wonder if the 1.4x magnification ratio is worth the expense.
Yea that is my question also especially as when I want to increase magnification I simply use my old tamron 2x teleconverter which increases my magnification from 1:1 up to 2:1 without losing any working distance and really no noticeable loss when it comes to image quality in comparison say to using the Laowa 100mm 2:1 ultra macro lens which I tried and returned as the working distance was drastically less with the laowa
I so wish they had increased the magnification on this new RF version up to 2:1 macro as then it would be an absolute deal maker for me, really surprised that they did not do this considering all the attention that the Laowa lenses have received and that most of them have been up to 2:1 macro
The focus shift on this lens makes it really not useable for macro work or anything that is super sensitive to focus...too bad as lens is shapr but for now you're better with ef 100mm macro and the adapter....
I just got this lens from bhphoto. after 5 times focus testing, I couldn’t see any notice difference in terms of sharpness. Did I get a good copy or Canon juste update it??
Say “lovely pot portrait picture” three times fast 😂
Tripod name plz
this is more of a tutorial on macro photography and other equipment for it
Note: I ordered and paid for this this lens (Canon RF 100mm Macro Lens) almost a year ago now and understand that I had to wait 6-months to get this lens but I still don't have the "Tripod Mount Ring and Adapter" yet and Canon has refused to comment to B&H for an update. I believe that to be unacceptable customer service and therefore can't recommend "Canon equipment" to anyone.
You didn't mention focus stacking
HI, Thanks for the comment, The Canon R5 makes it easy however we decided we had enough tips and techniques for this episode without that. We will most certainly in a future one though. Thanks
What happened at 3:14??? Bad edit?
Just an example of camera shake, albeit a bit of an extreme example
That SA-Control looks like it just throw a cheap "dreamy" filter on it.. feels useless.
I agree, it is horrible.
I would like to see a photo of jewelry
First comment. 🥰🥰🥰
Great review but what happened to the handsome Chris Nicoles guy
8:15 lots of ca.
2:20 wtf is that?? Ridiculous!
Example shots of what the spherical aberration control does on the lens. That image specifically is with the positive side cranked up.
