This was an inspiring video. I'm usually bored with corporate format product releases, but this was really well done and sells the product without being in your face about it. The photographer's background and lifestyle changes redirected his creativity and passion. And kudos to Oliver Wright for the tasteful imagery! Now I want the lens too! Time to sell my EF 100L Macro...
Looks like the subject in focus also gets blurred using either the + or - setting. I honestly can't think of anyone who would want to sacrifice overall image quality in this way. Nichest of niche features imo.
Just got this lens! Yes, it is a game changer. Especially when incorporating a flash and a diffusor, you are able to take otherworldly pictures full of details.

Fantastic to see the video :) Was really a great experience working with the team to produce this video and the lens really is an amazing product. I was a bit pensive about watching the video to see how I came across but I love it!
you did a great job. Super cool video. Do you think i can move to an object from maybe 1 m. distance and than go to the closest distance (macro) in one movement and the af will handle it? Thanks a lot
Fantastic! I loved the first EF L version of 100mm lens! For Macro, portraits, for any purpose You can use this lens for a versatile range of photography! Good job Canon!
I can’t believe it’s only $1,399! I was debating whether I should get the rf 85 2.0 or rf 85 1.2, now I have to get the 2.0, so I can get the rf 100 too! Looks like a great lense!
@@gamgoom85 to me that is cheap for something that can help you make x amount of dollars! I use it for product photography, my store has over 500 products 😂! Plus L lenses last for years, at least 5! Then it’s great for portraits and the amount of money you can make from portraits is unmeasurable! I think it’s a great price, maybe I’m looking at it the wrong way? 😂😂😂

I can't wait to get one, just pre-ordered! I love my EF version but this takes Macro to a new level. I also have the R5, so it will be great not to deal with an adapter. Kudos Canon!
Real shame about focus shift. I was really planning to get this one since I was more open to the use of the SA control for portraiture than most online reviewers, but since I mainly want to shoot small animals, making use of the eye AF is a priority for me. Hopefully you get to apply the SA control for slightly wider lenses later on, when super tight focus at higher apertures isn't an issue... In fact, I for one would be incredibly interested if SA was added to, say, the inevitable RF 24-70 f/2.8 II?
What an interesting way of shooting macro. I have thought that people use a flash for this in 95% of cases. Well diffused flash gives so many benefits.
With 8 stops of stabilization you can set your shutter to 0.5 seconds and still get sharp images.. at 0.5 seconds and 400 iso you will not really need a light source for many things unless its pitch dark! Canon is crushing it with the R5!
@@Sam1986E Yes, but I never photograph dead insects and like to freeze their poses when they are active (they often look boring when in dormant/rest state). So without a flash, for me using anything under 1/100s isn't possible in 99% of cases and under 1/200s in 85% of cases. And I would often need 1/1000s-1/2500s. But with flash it provides most of the lighting/freezes the subject's motion. So I actually mostly use longer exposures in 1/30s-1/125s range to get nice background/bokeh (not just dark like often with a flash if a fast shutter speed is used).
Hi Bhupinder, we used a Canon C300ii for the A cam and the R5 as a B cam. Lens wise we used a combo of the following EF Canon lenses: Cn-e 35mm T1.5, Cn-e 18-80 T4.4, 24-70 F2.8L II and the RF lenses were: 28-70 F2.0 and of course the star of the show, the 100mm F2.8L Macro
I just bought this lens to go with my Canon R5. You brought up a menu that allowed you to select the magnification to 1.4x. How do you pull up this menu? Thanks for a great video
if you are shooting macro without flash you should try the focus bracket for more DOF. at first, I was excited about this feature, however, it doesn't work with flash.. i nearly fell off my chair after knowing that after purchase.
What struck me was how clean were the images at ISO 3200 and 6400 on the 45 megapixel R5 (compared to my 41 megapixel Sony a7R III). Did you use something like Topaz Denoise AI? By the way, was the video shot at the Sheffield wildlife centre? Thanks.
Is there any difference in quality between the 100mm f2.8 EF L Lens and this one? Many still use DSLRs, so for them, EF lenses are number one choice, Also , if I am not wrong, one can use an EF lens with a Canon adapter to a R series Mirrorless camera body. I believe that to be unacceptable customer service and therefore can't recommend "Canon equipment" to anyone.
I hope this will be optically as good as Laowa 100mm 🤞🏻🙂. It doesn't bother me that this is only 1,4x because this has other benefits - but if this isn't APO or really close to it, it's no for me.
@@linusfotograf True, it's just that I compare this type of lense to Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x. It's so good and only $450 (though QC/durability isn't as good as with Canon L-series). So I often found it not so tempting to pay many times more if the picture quality is same or worse. I like to use a dedicated portrait lens so I don't use AF with this type of lens and have no need for IS (I freeze the movement with flash and don't take videos). But the price of this Canon lens isn't too bad at all - so if it's APO (with no/very minimal LOCA), like Laowa, I'm interested in buying it.
