  • "Yet Another Dinosaur Survival Game...":
Over the recent years the dinosaur survival genre has been getting more traction from the gaming community and developers alike. In a bit over 24 months not only the top 3 games gained some significant additional popularity, but the amount of titles and projects announced both publicly and privately has also been increasing in an exponential rate, and you would expect this to be considered a good thing, I mean, the more titles we have available the more content we have to enjoy right? Well in reality it appears that a decent portion if not the majority of the audience’s reception whenever a new title is announced is rather negative.
Hope you enjoy the video and see you in the next one, stay safe :)

I want devs to focus on making smaller, more focused games to grow their skills and learn game design rather than jumping straight to insanely complex games and shitting out "baby's first unreal engine game".

I want developers to come up with something original instead of "hey, the Isle is a pretty "cool" game, right? Let's copy that!"..I guess more specifically "Let's copy the generic "start as a random baby spawned from nothing" and have our players spend hours growing"
I would love more games analogous of Wolf quest for example. A game where you survive as a dinosaur by hunting, setting up a territory, fighting rivals and eventually having babies would be great.

Gathering supplies for specific purposes, like nest-building that can include other players or even add to the existing herds of AI that might migrate across the larger map.
Environmental interactions like knocking over some trees as a larger animal, digging burrows/tunnels as a smaller one, climbing rough terrain as some animals, flying as others.
Being actively hunted by AI raptors or other dinos at random times including at night, and being those hunters. Scent tracking after a rain is good for this. Also stampeding is (criminally) missing from these games. Imagine 50 dinos running through a plain area, two-thirds are AI and the rest are a group of players trying to get away from their attackers. If they're small, it's more dangerous, and if they're big, the AI herd goes ballistic and tramples harder.

I would love a dino game that really focused on the more intricate parts of life, rather than pvp. Make nesting super in depth, include courting patterns that have to be followed, seasons where your dino is in or out of breeding season. Temperatures and condition of eggs. Egg health variability (a genetic difference due to egg health) . Real consequences for being a lead bull (buffs towards health/defending your herd ect). Take BoB's drinking mechanic and expand on it. Add in illness that actually affects your movement and stamina and leaves you at the back of the pack or herd to be picked off. AI herds/packs that players can join if they are having a hard time finding others. limited global chat (same diet chats maybe). Emotes or idle animations to express the state of your dino.
There are so many other things to focus on than combat, and I know im just some random on the internet, but dam I just wanna enjoy a game not get bored once I reach adult. I know people love to fight and that pvp is a big draw to most games, but that is what PoT is for or heck, the Isle. Give us more, its not just about growing and killing, its about surviving, about learning new and exciting ways to interact with your environment and others. I wont be playing another dino game till I see something promising in both content, and quality.

It would be funny if there wasn't a chat at all, so you have to communicate with sounds only. There could be funny options like asking to join the pack, invitation to breeding, threaten etc. like in the Isle, but again more in-depth and maybe visual too instead of a sound you have to remember. I wish these games would also just try not to be scientifically accurate. I'm a big Paleo nerd but I'd love to see a more stylised approached at this point since ALL THESE GAMES LOOK THE SAME.
Hell, even the same mechanic but in a low fantasy setting would be amazing. Monster Hunter like, with a bunch of smaller and bigger Wyvern-like creatures. Where you can play a Utahraptor-like pack hunter, but also a big dragonlike being that can fly and has the capability to raid human settlements/villages, all that with typical The Isle mechanics; while human players can build their own settlements too or just walk around solo as monster slayers or whatever. Just ANYTHING different pleaseee

Quality is certainly the biggest thing in regards to the success of any game however, I would argue that a creative idea that sets itself apart from the competitors is just as important. The sad thing is however, not many developers want to be as creative within the genera as they could be. It feels as though many developers have seen the success of The Isle and thought "Let's just do what they did, it worked for them so why not for us?" when in fact, it is the other successful Dinosaur Survival games who have challenged The Isle specifically due to their creativity. Path of Titans is as big as it is because it has fluid motion yes but also mod support, abilities and ways to change the feel of gameplay from server to server. I'd love to see future developers take the Dinosaur Survival game base gameplay and add a twist be it with unique combat, even more customization or really anything else they can think of! If you want to make a successful Dinosaur Survival game in my opinion, don't let survival be the only mechanic or at the very least stretch out the aspects of survival other than to just eat when you're hungry and drink when you're thirsty.

    • @nardalis4832
      @nardalis4832 7 месяцев назад +3

Yes. Every single game needs to have something unique to it to stand out from the other one. I think with so many new devs rising they are not realizing how important this question really is. I also would suggest to *never* develop a multiplayer game the first thing you do. Its extremely costly, requires networking code and is just 10 times harder lol

    • @thelionoob
      @thelionoob 4 месяца назад +1

I feel like the misconception that devs are falling on is that the Isle is popular because it did things right. The Isle is popular because it arrived early in a completely untapped market, it isn't popular because it's good (it's not), it's popular because it has no competitors. Just look at ARK and even Day of Dragons, they're both dumpster fires but people play it because there's nothing else in the genre. If we gotta play a half baked game, why not stick to the one we already paid for

    • @alienstar2088
      @alienstar2088 4 месяца назад

@@thelionoob Whilst I generally agree with you, to The Isle's credit it is trying to vaguely represent a massive ecosystem with various smaller ecosystems and that's a complicated thing to do. The Isle is a very complicated game with a lot of mechanics, especially for a multiplayer game. I tend to give The Isle devs a hard time but I do have to admit, for a game that isn't triple A, they aren't doing horrible.
The market for Dinosaur survival games is always going to be minuscule compared to things like fps games but, with the resent exposition of Dinosaur media that market is expanding. You can look no further than Path of Titans to understand that this genera is growing.
I think the problem is stagnation, too many of these Dinosaur Survival games are attempting to mimic The Isle rather than forming their own niche in this growing industry.

I think a major reason why these games... aren't good, is because nothing really happens. Sure, your animal can starve, and needs to sleep, etc, but these are features that usually complement something bigger. These games don't present their players with any sort of substantial goal. I think implementing even basic story-elements could bring life back to this sub-genre. For instance, maybe there's a drought and all the plant-life dies, then all the dinosaurs have to migrate and find someplace else to survive. Then, these basic components of game play, such as eating to reduce hunger, will play into the bigger goal of exploring the world for a viable habitat.
A different animal-survival game that had a larger theme/goal that I absolutely loved was "Extinction is Forever". It has similar ideas - play as an animal that must eat, sleep, take care of their young, etc, but you also must survive in a world that's ever-changing, alongside a recurrent hunter that's perpetually trying to hunt you. I think more animal-survival games should try and do the same, or similar. Just being an animal in an empty world simply isn't compelling enough.

I don't know why people are so high on The Isle. It's missing vital features/gameplay, it's in development hell, devs are asshats and likely incompetent, and... it's not going to be a dino sim. It's going to involve modern humans and tribals and stupid mutants and has a completely unclear end goal for how all this will work together. It's like it's spending decades to become what ARK was in beta just with playable dinos. I GUESS, I dunno cause they won't give us a clearcut unmuddied vision because frankly they themselves probably don't know.
It's a classic example of early access screwup, and I assume the unfulfilled niche of "dino existence game" it fills is why it's being defended and still (barely) alive... except that there are new dino games coming out and the Isle fans instantly hate them all.
Imagine a whale that beached itself so far it's in the middle of a desert, and people are trying to keep it alive with their tongues. The spectacle is embarrassing to look at, and the whale is going to die inevitably anyway.

Back in the day a "clone" in the games industry wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Duke Nukem was called a Doom clone and Doom was a Wolfenstein clone. Part of the problem now is that you're not expected to play through a few hour campaign and enjoy a remix of what you already like "more of the same, please." Instead these sorts of games as well as the old Minecraft clones of 2010-ish, the later Day Z, Rust, and Tarkov clones, and the Battle Royale genre as a whole by their nature kind of demand to be _the_ game in that genre that a given player plays. When H1Z1 and PUBG were huge you didn't really see people switching between them all the time, people usually stuck with the one they preferred or already owned. Same story here, without huge differences in gameplay the market is saturated by the one with the most polish and The Isle has one hell of a lead in that department.

The main developer of that game has harassed countless women in private discords, mainly making sexual innuendos towards them(one of them being married, which he knew), and has streamed drawing porn in front of minors, among other things that he has done that I cant remember off the top of my head. He has made a deal with another content creator that made an exposé on him to delete the video that did so. I do not recommend supporting that game.

There are imgur links and screenshots of what he had done on that video and its comments which I would've linked if it had not unfortunately been deleted.

I even talked to Alderon Matt where he said that he is more interested in asking whether you can add more diverse quests rather than making walking or other functionalities feel good. This just goes against the tried-and-true minimum viable product philosophy and is bound to end up with a cluncky game.

if you were in a forest in North america, wisconsin, trying to live in the wild with nothing, things get interesting real fast. There are many problems with all these "survival" games because they dont truly think about the biology and etc that actually happens behind the scenes. Plantts dont just "spawn", even though they kinda do irl, each type of plant has its own wildly diff. stats and attributes, where to grow, how it is grown. Diets is a spectrum, and there are only so many things you can eat. irl, you dont sprint full speed to a glob of sustanence, and you certainly dont go on a killing spree... Pretty much all conventiona herbies are carnivores when they get the easy chance(horses, cows, deer eating baby birds n bones, carcasses etc), and carnivores eat plants only for stress or medicinal purposes (dogs n cats eating grass and who knows, etc). meat is waaay better to digest, but getting it is hard(more carnivorous), plants are super easy to "get" but you ofen need to LOOK for them, then eat them semi-constantly, they are hard to squeeze energy and nutrients out of them(cows with special guts, many herbs regurgitate their mulch, etc). Rn, herbivores eat the same as scavengers, go to a eating spot, eat it, then run and rest. Plants need to be fixed, and the WAY you survive should dictate fun, not how well it can survive.
Was VERY tired when writing this, idk about spelling errors or grammar... Someone should make a pokemon-esque 8-BIT(NO MORE SILLY OVERHYPED 3D ISLE CLONES!) survival game, innacurrate but thematically fitting dinos, fully cold blooded, but they all have their own defense and offense/way of life. I think that would be easier on the devs and more nostalgic for the folks. You could do this with cenezoic, cambrian, hell, make it alien, but at least make it feel REAL, not carnivore infested little timmy rex simulator...
    hope i get pinned LOL

Not always the quality is the problem in these games however not knew all of them only 3-5 of them. Glad you mentionned all current games in this theme. The major problem is these games developed by single persons or a small team of enthuisiasts whom tries to make their own dino game. This itself is not a bad thing the problem is the genre is a niche one which not brings millions of people to play these games, also no have the funds for marketing the game so these games will remain obscure until they get kickstart and people find them funny. Quality is also an important thing but in my opinion the whole survival genre is more or less focused on games like rust, the forest, infestation, day-z, division etc. People who plays and buys Cod each year no matter how bad the game is could give a huge number of playerbase of these games but these people usually wants quick fun and adrenaline boost.
The builder game genre is the closest to survival gamers so aiming Sims, Life by You and Paralives (these last two will be released around 2024-2025) could give a portion of players. Most of the players will be around 15-45 of age but beyond those people does not really get the concept of what gaming is. If you older than 45 then my apology I only stating the majority of players are enough with mobile games. I will make a list of these games and will check them later on.

However, I've never been that much of a fan of strictly multiplayer games, and the way so many of these games' devs have handled their projects has turned me off them. Almost all of them remain underdeveloped as far as I can see.
The funny thing is that, from what I remember, the Isle wasn't originally supposed to be a dinosaur survival game. The plan was for it to be more like Primal Carnage, with the playable factions including not only various species of dinosaurs but also human mercenaries and a tribe of carnivorous humanoids known as the Cannibals. I have no idea if the devs even remember how their concept started.

Long format videos are exponentially longer to make in comparison to my usual content. However, while i do release semi short videos on a weekly basis, i also do work on bigger projects in the background, with the "history of the Isle" and "The Isle Roster Tier-List" being some examples. Atm im about to finish my most ambitious and heavily edited video to date which has been cooking behind the scenes for over a year at this point. You know. There's a lot of survival games that don't do any justice towards the possible scope and complexity of the settings they use. Like Dragons, Dragons are literally such a versatile concept that they come in morphs of every major animal group on earth (mammal, reptile, amphibian, Insect, bird, etc) and they have such deep and far reaching roots in fantasy that there is no reason not to make a game that capitalizes on that. That recreates and allows you to be immersed in the fantasy of being a dragon.
You're in an ancient world with mythical things and creatures, in a medieval land and there could be whole human societies you could interact with, you could make the very act of flight something more than Toggle where you have to learn to actually fly and its different for each type of wing and makes your inherent powers and capabilities as well as physiology matter. If you want to fly high and far you pick the wings for it, if you want to explore the seas you go for something able to swim like a serpent, if you want to be ferocious and terrifying you can create a dragon capable of fending off humans, threats and other Dragons, you could put so much rpg elements into a game like this but do they ever do this? No. They just make a boring walking simulator that has more in common with a chat room with visuals than anything fun or enjoyable. You're right, these games are terrible. Because this genre never got past "you're a dinosaur, survive" in its shallowest depths, they never added anything beyond survive, why survive? It's not really hard, there's so few mechanics that matter or are interesting or enjoyable that it's hardly a game. If you play as a dragon in a survival game, you should be able to pick the region you hatch in, you should have to choose whether you leave humans alone or interact with them, conspicuously or in disguise, do you raid humans settlements for food? Do you avoid them and survive in the wilds instead? Do you hoard natural materials like gems and metals, do you have magic powers or are you merely a born force of nature? Do you have a reputation that causes humans to come hunt you down if you expose yourself or attack them? How do you interact with other Dragons? This is literally just the beginning of the kind of things that these games could do, and it's all rooted in the abandoned and neglected genre of Evolution games, like Spore. Who somehow has more playability and interesting mechanics than any of these dinosaur or creature survival games. Utterly pathetic. Who's going to realize that aspects of Evolution Sims would make an amazing dinosaur survival game where you have to actually survive in environments that simulate the real ages of the dinosaurs and see if you can survive till/after the 65 million year extinction? When will we get one where the only objectives aren't to live, woth nothing fun or meaningful to do, basically a barren and low effort mmorpg with dinosaurs as avatars.
In essence. These games are suffering from the lack of any actual content of a game. The PvE elements are almost non-existent, when they are literally the actual purpose of this kind of game, you need them to make the survival experience interesting. If there's not enough nuance it's not very fun unless your either hard-core involved or like chilling with people in a server. This is like if an MMO released with no things to do, no lore, no story, no effort put into design, just kept pumping out classes and races but never added anything to do in the actual game. Literally just adding nothing meaningful.

I felt that these kinds of games shouldn't just revolve around you jumping in, a baby, alone having to find your way through the land to water and avoid predators. Rather, you should spawn a small herd that you can control and give orders to. Instead of starting out as a baby Trike, you spawn in as a trike, with like 3-4 other NPC trikes, and they move with you as you walk, with some variation, but ultimately keeping the herd together. Carnivores on the other hand should spawn alone or with some smaller species, small packs. Then play as more of a strategy game. Your herd produces offspring to expand your herd and you create territories to compete for food and resources. You never actually play as a baby. Why would you? It's 6-8 hours of nothing but hiding in a bush and trying to sneak water so you don't dehydrate every 30 minutes. It's literally the dumbest gameplay mechanic anyone has ever devised.
These 1st person only games are so bad that almost every server out there imposes absolutely ridiculous, unrealistic rules while also having the audacity to call their servers "realism" or "semi-realism", desperately trying to compensate for the game's own bullshit, and they're almost always run by some girls with skittle colored hair and special pronouns, and their SIMP boys. Either that, or the servers are just stupid battle royals of extremely unbalanced carnivores, and the entire game becomes [W] + left click while people rage and pretend they're having fun. The level of toxicity in these games comes directly from people trying to cope with how absolutely terrible they are.
These games need to implore strategy, 3rd person UI herd controls and 1st person of whatever dino is in your herd if you want to do that for a while... but ultimately these games are just turds and clones of turds.

Its all repetitive and the community is Very often toxic as fuck. From gatekeepers, to griefers, to insufferable know-it-alls. If it keeps up, I honestly hope the genre dies out completely.
The games would do a lot better I feel if there were also single player modes as well with intelligent Dino AI roaming the maps. But every single one of these games have pushed hard for the multiplayer aspect only, and try-hards take over servers to ruin everyone else's fun by doing the things I listed before, gatekeeping, grieving, or just being annoying about it all.
But I often see whenever people bring up the idea for single player modes with AI and NPCS's, a vast majority of the toxic community shits all over that idea before ostracizing the people that brought it up in the first place, and then the devs LISTEN to the shit-ass griefers instead of the people wanting to play the games just to play.
Not every Survival aspect game needs online competitiveness in them in order to be fun or playable.

is it because its single player and therefore has another playerbase then the isle path and the others? but would'nt that also aply to isles of yore? or is it just too old to even be remembered?

Saurian goes YEARS between updates, that's why. Atm the game is practically unplayable.

The ONLY thing that MATTERS! is if any of those games actually is better at the end. Stable, clean, bug free, fun, even more animations and physics.
Simple is the rule, complexity can be fun, like skill trees, but no menu bars or anything, at best, just the food, water, stamina meters, diets, bleed. The isle does it best with minmal design.
The scent system is cleaner since Evrima. So that is one of the best parts of the isle's development.
Isle clone is a term that should not be applied to any of them, the isle is simply the first. But a dinosaur survival game will always look and behave the same fundamentally.

The problem is often times it's ambitious people with no prior experience who gather some people and start working on these games.
They expect the game to be done in two years and get through with $50k.
When or if it comes to light, it's usually a barebone survival game with basic food & drinking. You run around, find someone and either socialize or attack.
Combats aren't engaging, if not out right frustrating. Movements are basic and not that immersive, survival features are none existent outside of the really basic stuff.
So to me at least it feels like people are wanting way more than what keeps on being presented. It becomes redundant, because the only thing that changes are the visual fidelity. Yet I still haven't played one where I actually felt immersed. And outside of immersion, these games have literally nothing to show...
It might just be me, because I'd love to see a creature survival game work. But innovation has to happen. Let the creatures grab stuff with their maw or paw. Have advanced combat mechanics (affected by terrain, daytime, climate & weather superiority), have in-depth terrain interaction (since we can't really build stuff), rewarding and enjoyable hunting/tracking system, growth and rebirth (gene improvement, sort of like SPORE for significant Lvl ups).
I could go on... but my point is that trying to redo something like The Isle won't work unless you have something significant to bring to the table.

a jurrassic park survival game with other people on the island would be cool, cus alot of them so for the super sci-fi theme despite it being about dinosaurs

Best advice I can give to dino dev groups, get good, stay good, and listen to your player base. Don't make changes that your player base doesn't like... This means you Beast of Bermuda

i think the problem with these games is the focus on realism to the detriment to a coherent gameplay loop
you know what game figured out a fun gameplay loop to a game about surviving as an animal who has to survive vie feeding itself, figthing other animals, and mating?
    tokyo jungle for the ps3
a game which focused on a fun combat oriented gameplay loop where you can play as a pack of pomeranians teeming up to hunt down a lion

Harsh, but fair. A game should always feel good to *play* from moment to moment. The inputting of your controls should always feel good and responsive. That's the single biggest foundational aspect of videogame design that is so sadly often overlooked. (And which I feel like legacy isle did better than evrima.)

For me, personally. We already have some AMAZING Dino survival games. We want something new. Fantasy, Real animals, Strays, Something other than Dinos. There are some out there of the later, but they are bad, or lame. We are waiting for that good one, as good as PoT or The Isle but with something different.

I loved the isle before they redid it. The lack of content then left me wanting. I haven't returned to it since. I've played Path, but I don't like how it feels. The devs say they want a fighting MMO not a survival game. But they put in survival aspects anyway growing, food/water. But I can knock how well they've supported and updated their game. I really enjoyed the permadeath in the isle. I liked the sniffing system, hunting, grouping up was more difficult but more rewarding. But I realize these are both two separate games going for separate things. They're benefits to both. Never tried beasts of Bermuda.

The isle has taken 8 years to get to its current state. None of these games will ever match it’s quality in a reasonable timespan
