He needs to be moving forward (even in a 1x1 (backing up gives you enough space)) and he has to be pressing his sprint button at the same time, so the default settings would be Backing up, W+CTRL

However, it it possible to gain momentum within one block by jumping, and as you start falling sprinting forward than jumping again. This is very difficult to do as it requires precise timing, but it is possible. I would love to see a parkour map that uses this and Jardon raging at its "Impossible Jump".

To swim: Do not push up to a block and then try to sprint.
