This really resonates with me. Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed I start a spiral notebook and I open it up so I can write on both sides of the spiral. One one side I have my "to do" list and on the other side I have my "done" list. Most times I have worked on my to do list but I've done about a hundred things that were important but weren't on my to do list so I write those on my done side right before bed. It gets it off my brain and I sleep well, I leave it out so my husband can see what all I do everyday etc. The next day, I turn the page, put the undone stuff on the new to do list and keep going like that day by day. Seems to help me feel better about everything.

I used to have that "dread" problem about so many of my chores! Then I decided to give each of my major chores a day of the week and stick to it. Laundry on Mondays, meal plan and groceries on Tuesday, clean the house on Wednesdays, mow lawn in season on Thursdays, maintain flowerbeds on Friday. Substitute other seasonal chores on Thursday and Friday as needed. One major chore per day. Years later I still use this system and if I think about the chore on another day, I just remind myself that each chore has its own day and it is a waste of mental energy to think about it on other days. I've found that with time I don't dread my chores anymore, each is just that day's designated activity. Except cleaning. I keep the house picked up and cleaning isn't hard. And I like a clean house. I just don't like to clean! So that's the only chore I still have to motivate myself to do with some little reward for doing it on its day and doing it well. :) Oh the little mental games we play with ourselves to get our work done...

Great idea! Love visual cues! We are empty nesters, so we get trapped into the "we have all this time, so no rush" to actually get jobs done because there is tomorrow. When things do get crossed off the list, it's nice, but not that gratifying. I think we'll put our post it notes inside cupboard doors. One for TO DO and one for DONE so we can take a peek when we have a chunk of time and can't decide what to do, the time estimate will help us choose something!
Then the completed cupboard will reinforce "Well Done"! And inside a cupboard won't be visual clutter! Thanks so much for all your great ideas!! You are a blessing!

I feel like I am in a catch 22. I have a newborn and a toddler. I finally have the energy to do tasks at home since I am not so tired from pregnancy but now my free time is gone. I have found myself doing more things while waiting for the bottle to warm up or cleaning the shower while in it. I think the post it notes will give me the reminder that I actually accomplished something besides getting everyone dressed for the day. Thanks for all the tips.

Ha, I totally know your struggle. Our oldest just turned 4, and we have a 2-year-old and a 5-month-old. I stay home with them normally, so it's always a difficult task to get those tasks done. With the thoughts of all that's going on, it's even more difficult! Getting up before the kids wake up helps me a TON on those days I do. Even if it's just 15 minutes. :D Going to try this for those little things, like switch the kids clothes to new sizes, water the garden, etc! And yes! ^ LOTS and LOTS of grace. The dishes can wait, sometimes your kids can, too. But the dishes can wait longer. haha.

Great vid Dawn 👍🏼 Love your hair colour/cut too 🙂
I am REALLY liking the idea of putting estimated timeframes on tasks as that gives a fresh perspective that a bunch of tasks that may equate to an hour isn’t as daunting as just seeing a bunch of tasks that you may feel is just too much! An hour out of an entire day is manageable.
Great suggestion on how not to be steered away from achieving the task completion goal by saying either ‘I need to get this done so would you like to help me’ or ‘ I have so much time left to finish what I am doing then I would love to help you’

The leader and team members puts up the post it notes. When a team member finishes a task, they go and pick out another one to do. Works great! We use post it notes just like this!
A set for the kids could be good while they are waiting for you to help them!

Update :: After watching this video I did do the post it notes. It works! I have 2 on the back of my bedroom door, one on my master bath mirror, one on the walk in closet and one on one of my monitors in my office. I'm also utilizing the Sticky Notes on Windows 10 and have even more on my desktop screen. I've also implemented a new Tasks list. I have quite a few to-do items and have put them in my tasks list and choose 3 each night to do the next day. Thank you for the awesome tip. It works perfectly for me.

You did this video April 2020. It’s now September 2021. This summer has been so unproductive, especially the past few weeks. Today was the worst. My day was eat breakfast, then lots of nothing. Screen time, TV, eat, nap and repeat. I use to make a to do list & it was satisfying to cross it off. Not so much now. Like the idea of filling an area of completed tasks. Even though I like this, the older I get, the more difficulty I have with just getting started. To many days, getting out of bed is a reason to put on display with a post it note. Smile😊

I've watched a lot of different decluttering videos trying to get motivated to start working on my messy project. Finally this system totally works for me ,I watched this video last night and jumped into action right away I was able to accomplish so much in 2 hours. Waking up in a clean house this morning has encouraged me to do more today Its only 8.30 am right now but I already done my exercise and ate a healthy breakfast which I haven't done in a while, and also took care of my 18 months old toddler. What a difference it makes to get stuff done I feel mentally healthy and I already know its gonna be a good day. Thank you so much for sharing this great idea and by the way I love your beautiful kitchen I'm encouraged to update mine as well

Great idea! A friend of mine uses a similar concept....But, they have a board that is divided into 3 sections...To Do...Doing...Done.... The first section includes short and long term goals that they have planned together and 'wish list' ideas, such as large home improvement projects/remodeling, may be on the board on a different color post-it note so they see it as something they are working toward - planning, saving, etc. The board is there for everyone to see, so, anyone that has some spare time can grab a post-it and knock out a project. They move it to the 'doing' column when they start on it...and then to 'done' when it is finished. They also keep the notes up so they can see all they have accomplished.

I do make a list for myself every single day. I find that’s what keeps me in action. I’m retired and it is easy to waste time when you have the whole day to do whatever you wish! So the night before I sit down and think about what needs to be done. I try to only put down 3 things that need my attention. Then the next morning I don’t have to talk myself into anything....I just consult my list and get busy. It’s really helped me to be productive! And I NEVER ask myself if I’m in the mood to accomplish that list or not.....I know better than that!!! I feel great gratification when each day is over and that list is completed! Funny how we need to use physiology on ourselves, isn’t it?

  • @carolsailer1395

I am a list maker...a friend & I were just talking about all our notes...only I need to keep them in one area...
I need to keep them so I can show them to my husband...he’s also visual & so if I do something & he can’t see it unless I point it out...this way I keep the post it note & show him...say even at the end of the week all the things I accomplished...then throw them away!!! Love it!!! Thanks for the great idea!!!

  • @RobinDeeter

This is very similar to the Kanban board that I use. You have task listed on sticky notes that need to be done. You move them down to the "in progress" section and then down to the "Finished" section once they're completed. It's a visual way to see what needs done, what's being worked on and all the things you've accomplished. I'm also a visual person, and this works great for me. You can also use Trello, which is basically an online Kanban board or task tracker. It's so great to look back and see everything we've gotten done, especially like you said, on days when we're feeling down on ourselves and unmotivated to get things done. It can be a great way to get us in the mood to tackle at least a few things that day so we can see that sticky note moved to the "done" section. Thanks for another great video.

Instead of putting plans in my planner (because we hardly have any), I am tracking what I am doing each day to be productive. I also like your "frog" reference from your video with Diana. This past Saturday, I tackled a "frog" item of cleaning our ceiling fans. I wrote a couple of other things on a list and plan to pick one of those a week to do during quarantine (and maybe after, who knows?). I feel like we do need to remind ourselves of what we are accomplishing when all our days are running together.

I love this video. I used to use a very similar post-it method. I upgraded it to a more permanent method. I listed common tasks I needed to get done (15 minutes decluttering, clean bathroom, take out trash, etc.) cut them out, laminated them, and put Velcro on the back. Then I took card stock and put the opposite side of the Velcro on it. I put it all in a binder so I have a page for each day (one side labeled with the day and “to do”, the other with “completed.” Every night I set up the next day’s tasks. As I completed each task I moved it to the completed side. At the end of the day any uncompleted tasks moved on to the next day. I don’t know if it makes sense to others but it is a system that was easy to set up, is visual, and works for me.

I am also a visual person and I think this is a great idea. (Did you come up with it yourself? If so, you have a great mind for creativity and efficiency!) This idea reminds me of what I heard many years ago about a homemaker "'feeling' done at the end of the day." I never seem to run out of projects to do and I could work day and night for weeks. But if I have my three things to do, then I am "done for the day" when those projects are finished. Also, homemakers don't always get a lot of positive feedback for their work. This is a good way for a homemaker to see how much they have accomplished! I like to put papers on the inside of my kitchen cabinets. The papers are easily accessible, but are out of sight. I might put my sticky notes there.
I have read of a simple work planning system that was taught by Ivy Lee to Charles Schwab, one of the presidents of Bethlehem Steel Company:
    - Write down the six most important tasks you need to do. (I have written as many as ten.)
    - Number them in the order of their importance.
    - Work on project #1 until it is done.
    - Work on project #2 until it is done and continue working in the same way.
    - You don't have to be concerned if you get only one or two projects done because you are working on the most important ones.
I love your blouse. It looks really good on you. =) I also like the bar stools in your kitchen painted black. The red ones were really cute, but your kitchen seems really peaceful now. There isn't any one particular thing that stands out. Your kitchen seems really cohesive with pretty details in the shelving, cabinets, tile, etc. Beautifully simple and simply beautiful!

So happy to try this out this week. I put four post it notes onto a page of my to do book so I can see them and so can other people. Two jobs per post it so two notes for the morning and two for the afternoon. These are essential to get done allowing 30 mins per task. Yes! I love this! I'm going to add this to what I am doing. Each night in my planner I write three tasks that I want to complete the next day. If I complete those three tasks I feel good about myself and treat myself with something fun!

Hi Dawn, we started homeschooling last May (2020) because I needed a schedule I could count on and that didn't make more work for me. That said, I have a chalk board in the kitchen where I put appointments and tasks for the day. I use my day-timer to record what I actually DID, so I can look back and feel successful. I also use it for notes about the day.

I use a similar post-it note system when I am at work! Most of the time I am working on 3 to 10 projects so I put a bright post-it on each project with the company name, due date and time due! I place it in my work area in order of due time! This has worked really well because if co-workers or managers need to know what I am working on or can help, also when I leave people can see what I have, and also when I start each day I can see my priorities! I only just started watching this channel but loving it so far!

You just motivated me to sew up the hole in my glove I had sitting on my couch all day, to remind me to do it! After forgetting to take it out of my jacket pocket for weeks (meanwhile the hole kept getting bigger every time I wore it!) I finally remembered to get it out of my pocket, then just left it sitting there in plain sight! SInce I finally began to sew it, it took maybe 3 minutes!

I am in counseling for depression, anxiety, ADHD and other issues. I decided to retire early to focus on my health and give myself opportunities to enjoy life.
What works for me is your 3 items on the To Do List Idea. If I can accomplish 2 daily tasks of wash dishes, make bed [ taking out trash is as needed chore and yes someday it counts as 1 of the 3 ] then I really have only one chore to make my total 3. Anything over and above that # is extra. This elevates some of the guilt of " not getting things done". It allows me to see progress, keep up and yet it removes guilt. Is there more to be accomplished YES but right now I am working toward a system that works for me

I use the same technique with a personal Kanban board. On a whiteboard or a wall create a sections for Pending, To Do, Work In Progress (WIP), & Done. Having all tasks in front of you makes it easier to prioritize what to work on. Limit your WIP to no more than four items at a time. Really helps if you’re someone who starts things and doesn’t finish them. You can’t start something new until you close an item you’ve started on your WIP.

I do something similar but I write things to do in my planner. That way when it is crossed off I can look at the previous weeks and see how much I got done. Also, if I have no more space on writing down things to do for the current day then I write it down for the following day. Gotta love it!

Your tips are SOOOO helpful!!! The VISUAL aspect of seeing all your COMPLETED TASKS, on those Post-Its, sounds very encouraging. I might even suggest assembling a
Photo Album of your "Greatest Hits" Post It's,
of completed tasks, to browse through, on a day
when encouragement or motivation runs low.
Then you can SEE / REVISIT your past accomplishments,
    to help keep you going
(And maybe occasionally remind your family of what Mama does, to keep the household running)!

Wow, when you see it in black and white (and pink), you really understand the mind drain small tasks become. I’m going to try this method. Thanks. I have a similar system for selling on EBay. I use an acrylic 36x36 board with a calendar on it. I post “sold”, “list” and “photograph” on separate colored stickies that I perform each day. I can see how productive I am (and my family members) at a glance. At the end of the month I take the stickies and put them all at the bottom and reuse them.

Many teachers (myself included) spend alot of time talking to students about not putting off tasks especially the ones they dislike the most. So often and again today I think about how often I talk the talk to students but don't walk the walk myself. This was a well timed video for me especially reading the comments from other folk who are also feeling unmotivated right now; I can stop beating myself up for not being a super productive dynomo.

Thank you for the reminder. I have a “digital vision board” and a “wins board”. Basically a Pages document with photos of our goals and another for our successes. I just updated them both. I also like this idea of post-it tasks. My planner has fallen to the wayside since the “lockdown”. I do something very similar at work! I keep an inexpensive tablet on the corner of my desk - on the cover I put stickies for things I need to accomplish or make progress on. The top half are to accomplish TODAY and the bottom half are for making progress on - or to remind me when they are due. Inside the tablet, I make an entry with that day's date then when I complete a task (and I only create sticky notes for the major things), I move the sticky to that day's page. Then with just a quick glance I know when I completed a project, signed the contract, etc. without having to go pull a file to refer to it. At the end of the day, if there is something I want to remember that happened that day (i.e. the phones or internet went down for 3 hours), I write it across the bottom of the page for that day.

I love post-it notes or just to-do lists. I haven’t tried them with times before, but my challenge in general with time is that I think that everything takes less time than it actually does. I call it “Alexandra time”. So I try to be more realistic on how long tasks will take, but sometimes I see one thing and then when I’m doing that one thing I see another thing so I do that so I do end up getting more done, but it also takes more time.
