When I first started prospecting. I used to pan so slow I was scared of losing gold it would take 20 min to do a pan. Bit I watched your older videos on panning and after that I can run through a Garrett super sluice in 3 minutes or less. You are a great teacher and we as prospectors owe you a big THANK YOU. .. AND YEA YOUR GONNA GET WET. but you just keep them pants on

It’s good to have a refresher and learn some new tricks. Keep it up Jeff.
The secret to black sand is classification. It’s closer in density to gold so it is harder to separate if the masses of the particles are similar (small gold = larger black sand). If they are all the same size, the difference in mass is more apparent and it is easier to separate using gravity methods.
If you are test panning, prospecting, do what Jeff does and quickly pan it out so you can get an ESTIMATE of the gold in your sample. It doesn’t have to be exact. Suck up all the black sand and gold and move on.
If you’re dealing with a large amount of concentrates, classify, classify, classify and then separate.
An elutriation column works great for separating materials by density but outside of commercial applications they are rarely used.
Hes right about Gravity. But fill a see through tube. Sift the rock and black sand around and watch the gold go throu other screens. Gravity, water, bottles.
Great tips! I especially like the magnet & washer tip. Grabs the magnetics and gets them right out of the way. 👍

I have a few commercial gold claims that we are working now in NE Nevada & near Wickenburg, AZ. One is hard rock, the other placer. A friend said to me; “since you do this commercially, do you need to pan?”.
My response; “abso-damn lutly”. With hard rock we do core samples (test holes), those are then crushed and sampled to determine gold content. With our placer mines, I am constantly doing ‘test pans’ in various locations to determine Au content.
I did the prospecting recreational for 50 years before advancing to gaining mine leases. It is a business.
I so appreciate you Jeff and the comedic way you instruct. So many geologists have no sense of humor. It is great to have instruction that is fun. In a mining-world that is make-or-break, sometimes humor is all we have left.

That’s a great tip with the hard hat and prospecting in stealth mode haha.
One tip I heard was in California I think you need a permit to carry a weapon or something or maybe concealed carry, but if you’ve got a fishing license and a fishing pole with you you can carry a weapon without worrying about the concealed carry or another law. I can’t remember but might be worth looking at. Just carry a fishing pole and you might be able to defend yourself easier. Which really should be easy. When I was a teen I saw a cougar take down a fawn and literally was worried about my dog as we were on the mountain and I had no gun or nothing. Thankfully the lion just took the fawn and left my dog alone.

I really like that black sand tip. I had a buddy who used a magnet _over_ the pan to just pick up the black sand, but that with washer and magnet is smart. My improvement to my friend's trick was a magnet in a zip-lock sandwich bag. It saved cleaning the magnet.

I sometimes pan swirling around while dipping it to fill the pan with water like your doing with your hat if I want to do a pan in under a minute. I've shown I can do a full pan in about 45 seconds and still catch really small flour gold 👍❤️💛💚

There are only so many ways to skin a cat in all things,
With gold if you have no help no knowledge and start going at it blind you’ll find out all the ways to do each process.
The biggest thing is to not treat it all like it’s a glass your trying not to break.
When I first started panning I would fill buckets then dump the buckets into a stone grading pan and drip some on the ground then pick it up worried it was full of gold and it was fragile a precious earth,
Then it dawned on me that I only dropped dirt back on the ground it came from,
Lol I would worry about the spilled soul that fell back on to soil it was so stupid I could only laugh when I thought of it.
After that I got mean with it all and use large pans I break and then use super glue until that stops working,from there I’ll melt by broken pans back togother the best I can then apply super glue or JB weld,
I don’t always sand the rough seam down unless it’s a massive ridge from to much glue or JB weld.
Even with a pronounced seam down the middle of my pan where I fix the cracks, I can still pan with it and sometimes that middle seam can coke in handy and stops the gold in the repaired crack and will hold the gold while everything else can go past.
Also you must come to terms with running material threw a 2nd wash if not even a 3rd wash if your a penny pincher.
Gold is a love hate relationship.
Here in Vermont I don’t see much of any big gold,it’s all small stuff and I can find gold all over and ever since the flood we got this summer it’s all over but it adds up so slow.
I could do 40 hours and not get a whole lot.
It can be very hard work for very little but I love it.

Stratify a half a five gallon bucket by having half gravels or cons in a full bucket of water, stir and shake it, then you can scrape out everything but the bottom layer when you tilt the bucket over. Saves untold amounts of time. It also helps to have a pan with more shallow riffles To pan your sands.
Me down here in Tennessee the little that is here when you can find it which I never have other than in a rock. I'd be terrified especially when wet that gold would get trapped in the magnet with the sand

Jeff, there’s a video that shows 1/3rd of panned gold washes out. Can you check your pile of dirt for that much lost gold? I need confirmation that it’s true. Use a Desert Fox! It works. Once it’s adjusted properly, every spoon of black sand gets held back by the water and the chips of gold shoot right into the cup behind in the center hole. It works.

It's the blueberry bounce yo and Alabama ain't got gold!!!!!! But GPAA does and they said it 29 years ago on their show I was watching when I was 10
I do a similar thing with the magnet with my river sluice. I put a clip under the mouth of my sluice. My magnet is long enough to go all the way across the sluice. Material dumped into the sluice passes over my magnetic field on its way down to the riffles. The magnetics get stuck instead of clogging up the sluice

yes you can on BLM land but check claim status first , we made many vids on how to do that....you betcha you have a few places in UT to do that

I mean the stuff you do is pretty sound, no offense, but, in the past i heard that you could sound prospect which will bring the focused on thing up to the surface, i have never researched it, but just a moment ago you said we can all help each others out with new ideas, so... this poped into mind, now im wondering. I like the Neodymian Magnet idea but could you get a thin magnet, the thickness of the washer, drill a hole in the middle of it, and screw/bolt it to the bottom of the pan and then process your sample? That way the black sands would stick to the magnet and the gold would float to the front riffles. Maybe epoxy the magnet to the center of the pan.
What about gold that is light flake for type ,wouldldn't gold still in dirt you are discarding,in my experience with type of flakes I've been getting only jet dry will make it sink 2 bottom & then it's with black sand .WHAT A PAIN!

Great tips and more gold coming from the backyard😳 lol. Since I couldn’t afford a Miller table and some of lynx creek gold is super fine I developed the 48th state shake. It’s kinda hard to explain but by using a little water in your pan and using the smooth side you v can tilt your pan (to a degree I never measured ) and gently and quickly shake your pan back and forth keeping the center of the water in your pan barely moving and the super fine gold stays at the corner of your pan but the action of the water draws the black sands up and away from the gold into a little pile in the center of the water about an inch or so above the corner of the pan leaving the clean gold behind once you get a little pile you just wash it out by panning or tip your pan under the surface of the water and wipe it away with your finger and repeat at the end you may have a couple small iron stones but they easily separate from the gold with your finger. Keep an eye on the black sand in the middle of the water if your to aggressive it will take the gold as well but with a little practice it’s extremely fast. (Way Faster than a blue bowl or Miller table) I reckon it’s my OCD that caused me to do this I just can’t take seeing tiny bits of black sand in the weigh up cup lol clean gold is happy gold.

One of your videos that I can't find asks my favorite place to find gold and emergency prospecting stuff...well I'm in a city so I love finding garbage clothing. Clothing traps microfine gold. And I know most people are not going near that garbage. A snuffer might be a water tube that needle users use. I take a pen ink that has no ink and push it into the tube
I have so many ideas with magnets. Im new to the Gold Community. And looking the ins and outs and flaws. Ever charge the ground to get earthworms? While its raining? While the charge is on. Hover a fishing magnet over the mud. Let me know how it goes please.
I saw a short vid some guy made where he was prospecting with a metal detector and he pulled out a large vug of gold bear minerals. He did not say where he was but I recognized the cinder cone in the background as being on Ft. Huachuca AZ military reservation and within a dud zone. I think I need to go out there for a look about.

People who know where to find gold and know how to do things like this will be some of the most fortunate people in the near future. You can expect to see gold at over $1k a gram before the year is out and pulling out this much gold in a day would change your life.

Could you not just get to the part where you need to do the alabama shake and save time and just keep the whole dirty solution and just dissolve the gold out with cyninde? Should save more time and you could turn turn a bunch of that into bars.
I try to give some pay dirt away and you're wright, you can't do it. I have to say Sam Walton was wright when he said " people will buy anything, it doesn't need to be in the wright place!

I am still watching.
