It’s not a disease it cause when all your muscles relax at the same time you feel like your falling because your nerves trick your brain and also in dreams sometimes when you fall in a dream you start to jolt
And sleep disorder is also a cause of it I’ve had trouble for like 2 weeks now it’s terrible I jus wanna sleep I gotta fix my sleeping schedule cause before I got these things I’ve been sleep like at 4 or 5 everyday and as soon as I started to notice I couldn’t be able to sleep normally anymore
They don't call it FALLING to sleep for nothing. When our body jerks we actually FELL to sleep too QUICKLY. Our relaxed mode did not get a chance to SWITCH ON. BUT Grandma always said sudden jerks are our guardian angels being JERKS. Touching us while were sleeping. They think its funny to see us JOLT WIDE AWAKE.
Muscles: “Alright, brain. How’s it going up there?” Brain: “Pretty good. I’ma fall asleep shortly, oh frick! She’s dying!” Muscles: “Oh no! We gotta get her attention!” Brain: “Oh just a false alarm.” Muscles: “Aight. We did it! We got her back up! Did you say something brain?” Me: *flinches*
I get these when I'm tired and i'm dozing off but i'm not laying down: like, if I'm falling asleep in a chair or something. Ill get these small ones that kind of stop me from properly falling asleep, but that don't really jolt me awake, usually in my legs. and then rarely i'll get these absolutely *MASSIVE* ones that effect my whole body, and I'll nearly jump out of my f***ing skin. I've read somewhere that it might have something to do with when we were monkeys and slept in the trees; If we weren't positioned properly then our bodies would wake us up to stop us from basically falling out of the tree.
My doctor told me something similar.. our brains have not evolved much through human evolution.. 1000s of years ago our primate predecessors hunted for food & were also hunted by other predators.. the brain taught itself to prepare for the perceived threat, that is “flight or fight” response to the threat, primates then either fled or fought the predators..! We evolved but the brain is pretty much the same & reacts to perceived threat, as it did 1000s of years ago.. except the threats now are different & aplenty.. any fear, is perceived as threat & the brain goes into panic mode, in order to prepare you to flee or fight it! Also our subconscious is like a registry, that records all our previous fears including the time that we went to panic mode.. that is why some people experience panic attacks & anxiety at a particular time everyday or they suddenly feel anxious, while watching or reading something which has triggers recorded in our subconscious mind!
I had a brain tumor removed from my right temporal lobe. After the surgery, I unfortunately experienced these over 100 times per night. It's called myoclonic seizures. Myo=muscle. Clonic=turmoil. A Stanford study showed that when the brain mistakenly believes the heart has stopped, it sends an uneeded jolt. They are very difficult to control. Lamical, Depakote and Benzo's are the pills of choice. Mine have been reduced greatly. My best advice is to work out. Myoclonus doesn't like endorphins or dopamine. Be well everyone!!!
I had this all night a couple days ago. I kept waking up every 10 minutes from what felt like I was falling and I always jolted awake. I barely got any sleep. It wasn’t a great experience 😫😫
I used to get the falling down feeling when I was a kid. Now it’s the high ringing in ears, the surrounding sounds becomes watery like a malfunctioned speaker and then the head jerks side to side. It’s scary, feels like a short seizure episode. And I never had a seizure while awake, ever.
I will share my experience, I suffered for days from Hypnic Jerk. Sometimes it happened 6 times in few hours while I try sleeping. I started searching in the internet. I stumbled over one comment in RUclips, saying that he/she tried iron supplements and this stopped the symptoms. Guess what I started to take iron+ vitamins complex Supplements and it worked as charm.
@@MG-oh1ew my vitamin and supplements complex consisted of B12 , magnesium chloride, iron (ferritin), vitamin D and C.. wish you best of luck 🤞 also I reduce caffeine intake, if I crave coffee I only drink it 3-5 hours before bed time
I had it for a few days except the last two nights. Seems like it reduced. Step outside in daylight for 45 minutes or more. You can be under shade if its too sunny. The other thing is, avoid/ignore the thought of the anticipation of not getting sleep. It gives anxiety and makes things bad. Try and go to sleep like you did before the jerks started. And do it everyday. It will reduce or even go away. I've posted this comment on a few videos so more people can be at ease.

With me, it's always I'm falling asleep, I start having a dream, I'll always be walking and trip or miss a step etc, which makes me kick my leg out and that wakes me. It's never scared me because I know it's related to the dream and my muscles aren't fully "shut off". Sleep paralysis however, that is indeed scary!

@@subh1510 ah, that's interesting. Thanks for sharing that. As it's pretty much ALWAYS tripping or missing a step for me, I've often wondered if it's common.
I’ve found that if I ever have this type of issue or the feeling of sleep paralysis, 90% of the time it’s when I am sleeping on my back. My own theory is that it is caused from your brain feeling like you are off balance as you drift into sleep or move in dreams. And trying to make sense of it causes these issues. Oddly enough too if I sleep on my back but on my couch, something about being in that banana shape with my head and my legs both raised, relieves this issue just like sleeping on my side or my front-side.
Dis happened to me sometimes.. i am so sleepy and tired and then when you fall asleep you suddenly wake up bcoz i feel lyk my heart stopped and cant breathe.
2:48 .. " But it's not dangerous, right?..No it's not dangerous". It's not dangerous if it only happens a few times. I get it every night, every couple minutes all night long for the past 2 years. I feel like I'm going to go crazy from lack of sleep. My mental health is suffering. My memory is suffering. My kids are suffering. All because of these hypnic jerks that wake me up ALL night long. I Started to get them after I had my third child September 23rd 2018. My baby and I suffered some complications during birth and she had to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the first 2 months of her life. I stayed with her the entire time and only went home to shower once a week and see my other kids. I slept on a cot in the tiny 6" by 8" room next to her hospital bassinette. The constant lights and noises and nurses barging in every 30 minutes to do her vitals or give her medication kept me up for what felt like the whole two months. Every time I thought I was about to get some sleep when my newborn finally fell asleep, something would wake me. When I got home after two months I was so relieved to be home and able to get some help from my husband so I could finally sleep in peace. That didn't end up happening. My mind and body was so exhausted, yet every time I drifted to sleep, I would awake with violent spasms. Ever since that day I have hypnic jerks every few minutes. I'm going on 24 straight months on virtually no sleep because of this. At the end of the day I have three children worth of parenting and hardly any rest. I've tried multiple sleep aids prescribed by my doctor and none seem to have any affect on the problem.
Seems like you’re stressing a lot and I think this is anxiety. Reduce your anxiety, try meditating and eat healthy. I also have anxiety and always get muscle twitches and I jerk in my sleep but it doesn’t wake me
I searched for this because a while ago this happened to me. And sometimes when i'm going to sleep I try to get relaxed. But a rigid movement causes me to get up wake all of a sudden, sometimes it's scary. I don't know if its the same thing but when I was younger this happened, but it was continuous and I couldn't stop it, it was like a seizure but I knew it wasn't exactly like it.
think this might be true, Whe they say the brain things your dying.. everytime I get those it feels like Im falling deeeeper and deeper and deeper in a dark sleep it really feels like im dying.. Im fully aware of whats going on but at the same time I feel like if I dont wake up now, theres no coming back.. like im slowly dying in my sleep.. thank God until now I was always able to fight it off and jump up always out of breath and always trying to realize where Im at and if Im alive at all.. everything including myself feels soo unrealistic like im literaly trying to realize if Im alive..
I'm experiencing it for 3 consecutive nights right now. Everytime i'm trying to sleep there's this weird quick twitch on random parts of my body and it's really annoying. Good thing is i still managed to get some sleep by drinking milk before bed, taking a hot bath, relaxing my whole body before sleeping and not using gadgets.
Idk what it was but I was just sleep and just started to get into a deep sleep and then my body just started shaking and it felt like I was floating upwards , never been so scared .
Mine doesn’t happen when I’m necessarily “falling”, it just feels like a massive surge of adrenaline because I’ve stopped breathing or something? Then I wake up with so much anxiety. Body trying to sleep, mind thinks I’m dying 🙄
I’m here because I googled my symptoms and I like that it’s not this and not some crazy neurological issue. Does it sometimes happen to you guys more than once in a night? Sometimes it’s over and over and I can’t sleep because of it.
I had this once before and also last night very scary. I regularly have ones when I’m dreaming and feels like im falling of a bridge or somthing then i wake up ,that happens a lot with me and I’m okay with those because I fall back asleep instantly as they happen mid sleep 5 hours in..so I’m in deep sleep to pay much attention to it..but the one I had last night was just when your falling asleep and all of a sudden your body jumps you shout loud and have serious heartburn, and happens continuously trying to fall asleep so then u freak out and get up and go get a drink.. and don’t sleep for a few hours any one relate to heart burn
Does anyone also experience this while listening to music if you’re sitting up. I experience it sleeping listening to great music and other times when something strikes me as beautiful
It's weird that I'm seeing in comments that people have been recently having it for the first time in their lives or like as if some people apparently don't even have it when I've been having it my entire 37 years I've lived pretty frequently and it's actually a good feeling as after it occurs my mind and legs feel super soothed and help me relax better. I told my father who's a doctor that I get these when I was like 11 and he told me that everyone has them and that it's natural.
While i close my eyes and trying to sleep my body shakes for a second is this related to this one. I am worried sometimes i am sitting and working had happened the same.
It only happens to me when I'm sitting at my desk and try to put my head down on it for a quick nap, or when I'm sitting watching TV and I begin to nod off, then it hits like lightning, that instant sense of panic like you'd feel if you were on the roof of a tall building looking over the edge and a sudden gust of wind nearly pushes you over. You feel like your soul is about to jump out of your body it's such a fright. But this NEVER happens to me when I lay down in bed for a proper sleep (as opposed to the napping while sitting)
It only happens when I workout, even if it is 12 hours before bed+. I have to either jump in a cold lake or have a freezing cold shower until I am shivering. It has progressively gotten worse over the years.
This why I'm scared of falling into deep sleep. Because of my sleeping issues and anxiety I get these weird jerks and tingles trough my body when I enter sleep and it scares me. My mom made me even more scared because she once tried to wake me up multiple times and I just didn't respond and it reminded her of my aunt who has epilepsy.
I remember a few years ago someone told me the brain does this because it thinks you are dying as you are moving through the stages too quickly so the brain picks up on a sudden lower breathing rate and less activity and sort of "jolts" you to make sure you aren't dead
Same, I've been having them all my life since I was a child where when I'm falling asleep I'm half dreaming that I'm walking forward or backwards somewhere and suddenly I step over the tip of an edge above a hundred feet up in the air and that feeling of loss of gravity occurs on my legs but the after feeling of it is so damn good that it helps me relax better.
It happened to me like 4 mins ago and like, I can’t breath or move, and to get out of this situation I have to either make a violent move or just try to breath, and if I fail to do so, I’m pretty much fucked
I get made fun of for the jerky movements. It happens when I wake up due to lack of sleep. For context, I don't get enough sleep and I have insomnia. If I manage to sleep, It's for 2-6 hours. I feel exhausted and my body tries to jump start me awake.
Mee too I think this might be true, when they say youre dying in your sleep.. everytime I get those it feels like Im falling deeeeper and deeper and deeper in a dark sleep it really feels like im dying.. I believe it happened to me, but not sure. I had a sleep paralysis. It seemed very strong. Had very much difficulty to open my eyes. And what was weird is when i slightly got them open i managed to move the part of my arms which is from hands to elbow. Then i started shaking. While i tried moving my arms it felt like my brain was having a shortcut. It felt like my brain was resisting to have my arms moved. And i heard a very strong uncomfortable sissing noise from out of my ears as it felt like i could hear my brain. This experience was just weird. In particular the noise i heard. Made no sense and made me paranoid.
I started having this over a year ago and now get them most nights. Does my head in as it ruins my sleep and i find it hard to drift off as i dont want it to happen again
Does anyone get these after drinking alcohol and trying to fall asleep? Like this feeling of being punched in the chest and then waking up in a massive panic attack?
Can these happen so severely that you literally halfway sit up in bed and the diaphragm muscles have contracted so suddenly that the air rushing out of the lungs causes a loud and deep vocalization? It happened to me like 2AM and was so loud a neighbor in the apartment across the hall opened his door as he was wondering what happened. Can hypnic jerks be that violent and loud and yet be normal?
I got it about 1 month ago. They started with slight movements. Now i have hurt my neck twice and my back as they've became violent jerks. My legs kick up in the air harder than ir i tried it on purpose. I'm sick of it
When I nap it happens to my arm and wakes me. But isn't that the point of a nap , not to fall into a deep sleep but to recharge? So isn't it helpfully in this instance?
Some people believes that the reason why you feel like falling is that the reaper is trying to take your soul out but your soul fell from him and you cameback to life and thats why you feel like falling.
The stress of not knowing what this is makes it even worse. What worked for me is Manuka Honey. A teaspoon everyday will help. You won't need to take it very long.
I dont think i feel like im falling, i would just shake up out of my bed or whereever i fall asleep, i used to think it was like a few minute nightmare
Can anyone tell me what this means. I was sleeping on my back, not on my arms or anything just to make that clear. So I was sleeping in my room for some reason with the light on, don't remember having a dream, if I had one at all. But I woke up for no reason and walked to my door, my right arm numb, my left, slightly numb. Started from my shoulders. I bolted up from sleep and started walking towards my door with relative ease, I was in a panicked state but hate no blurry vision or headaches no bodily pain, just numbness and my light was on. I went over this with my grandma. Thought it was a miniature stroke at first, but then realized that couldn't be the case. Or at least I hope not because I'm 16 hoping to become a boxer with a healthy diet weighing at least 155 pounds. We also said it could've been a symptom carried from the dream I just had. But it felt weird. Can someone help?

You need to wind down at the end of the day. No caffeine or looking at your phone, Tv
How’s it going up there?”
Brain: “Pretty good. I’ma fall asleep shortly, oh frick! She’s dying!”
Muscles: “Oh no! We gotta get her attention!”
Brain: “Oh just a false alarm.”
Muscles: “Aight. We did it! We got her back up! Did you say something brain?”
Me: *flinches*
That’s how it be fr 😭😭
I get the intense ones across my whole body constantly when trying to sleep it’s horrible Dk what to do

I like how this forum accomodates all sorts of wild theories
Monkeys and ancient humans are entirely different species
I had a brain tumor removed from my right temporal lobe. After the surgery, I unfortunately experienced these over 100 times per night. It's called myoclonic seizures. Myo=muscle. Clonic=turmoil. A Stanford study showed that when the brain mistakenly believes the heart has stopped, it sends an uneeded jolt. They are very difficult to control. Lamical, Depakote and Benzo's are the pills of choice. Mine have been reduced greatly. My best advice is to work out. Myoclonus doesn't like endorphins or dopamine. Be well everyone!!!
Yes this is what it felt like a massive jolt !!!
I had this all night a couple days ago. I kept waking up every 10 minutes from what felt like I was falling and I always jolted awake. I barely got any sleep. It wasn’t a great experience 😫😫
Anyway you fixed it?
What happened help
Imma try this. Wish me luck.

@@farazahmed9588 Hey faraz.. glad that u have overcome it. I started to have this like in December n let me tell you my life style I have been working from home n after my work hours, I go to play badminton like 9-10pm and sweat out a lot.. come back home have dinner and sleep.. I started facing this issue since last week n everytime I start feeling like I am entering deep sleep, this jerk happens n I wake up I am literally having no sleep but for almost 4 days I stopped playing badminton n went out for a walk in a cold breeze and day before yesterday I slept like 10 hours but again when I started playing badminton yesterday I didn't get sleep because of these jerks .. and as you told, I went to bed with a fear of not getting sleep. I am literally worried what do you suggest?
@@muraligo3339 @Murali Go Avoid any physical activity after sunset. Do it in the first half of the day.
Spend at least 30 minutes in sunlight every day.
Worrying is natural. But you have to train yourself to go to bed like you did before it started.
Remember what you used to do before sleep and do those things.
I also changed my pillow. Got an orthopedic one from The White Willow on Amazon (about Rs.1000).
Have slept well every night since then after 3 months of horror-nights.
It will pass Murali. Take care.
@@farazahmed9588 Thanks a lot Faraz . I will follow it and will see.. so nice of you that u r advising people unlike many others who might have overcome this situation.
Happens to me when I'm just sitting down and trying to relax. Annoying and sometimes very uncomfortable.
It's happened to me also but my hand jerk
It has happened to me my buttock will twinkle when am asleep as if someone is having sex with me..I will woke up and it will be very hard to control sexual feelings,,.I 0ray that it will not lead me to musterbation
Yea that's my fear sleep paralysis lol seems to happen more when I sleep on my back 😢
@@subh1510 ah, that's interesting.
This happens when I'm on a plane and trying to sleep. I've given up now..on long distance flights...I prepare. Snacks, netflix and a book.

Have you tried meditation? I hope you get better soon
Seems like you’re stressing a lot and I think this is anxiety. Reduce your anxiety, try meditating and eat healthy. I also have anxiety and always get muscle twitches and I jerk in my sleep but it doesn’t wake me
Thank you so much I got answer for my problem after long time 😲😳!!!! So I have to drink my coffee early and exercise early!!! God bless 💗 you!!!!
I feel like this is happening lately and it's due to my heart because that's where I feel like the jolt is coming from
So thankful this has been explained! This has happened for several weeks when my apartment got really cold and I could not fall asleep.
This happened to me last night about 2-3 times. I worked out later that night than usual (10:30 pm) so that’s probably why this happened.
He explained it like a champ
the thing that scares me about hypnic jerks is that i don't when it will happen, so the anticipation scares me
I searched for this because a while ago this happened to me.
I always get that.. It is really annoying and it always makes me really scared
think this might be true, Whe they say the brain things your dying.. everytime I get those it feels like Im falling deeeeper and deeper and deeper in a dark sleep it really feels like im dying..
Right from yesterday i got this prob 😢
Just happened to me last night. Thought I was having body tremors. Thank goodness it's nothing serious.
I find it comforting.
How r u now?
@@desimemes9351 I'm actually doing fine now. I'm taking some magnesium glycinate meds now.
It feels like I slip on something and my entire body gets dragged down. It doesn’t bother me, nor does it happen everyday it’s kinda like deja vu.
Yeah, you are not alone though,we overthink too much :D
I’m here because I googled my symptoms and I like that it’s not this and not some crazy neurological issue. Does it sometimes happen to you guys more than once in a night? Sometimes it’s over and over and I can’t sleep because of it.
Avery McKenna yeah happens to me
Happens repeatedly to me every night, find it terrifying.
I have bad anxiety apparently u need magnesium exercise and breathing exercises
Avery McKenna yes a lot of times , my husband complains that I wake him up. I think I need my own bed 🛌
Avery McKenna how are you now plz tell me
It feels like I'm losing my breathe and having a panic attack. Thought it was my heart
When I was trying to nap one time. I was like half asleep and I thought of me slipping and then I jumped and woke up in a cold sweat😬
Last night I literally imagined the house dog currently in my home jumped on my face then I jumped
LOL bruh I thought i was the only, I literally imagined some random stuff and it keep repeating everytime and I'm like omg let me sleep smhh
I am worried sometimes i am sitting and working had happened the same.
how are you now plz tell me
Yeah that just happened to me. I was about to sleep and then my body felt like it was shaking left and right and stopped once I woke up.
I have experience this jerk while sleeping. I think it anxiety or depression. One time, I almost jump off the bed. Oh my gosh..
I thought it's something danger, symptoms of any kina disease.👍.i felt it more than 2/3 times so i searched it up...…Thank God ! Really happy
I remember a few years ago someone told me the brain does this because it thinks you are dying as you are moving through the stages too quickly
so the brain picks up on a sudden lower breathing rate and less activity and sort of "jolts" you to make sure you aren't dead
Mmmmmm
My dr said I have sleep apnea my brain knows I don’t breath well in my sleep so it thinks your dying and possibly wakes you up
Man when I take a dump and go back to sleepy , not only feels cozy but damn I get some crazy deep dreams I could make movies out of it.
It really happens to me lot of time.
I don’t have this but I randomly get a „jump scare“ where I just flinch randomly and wake up
I have the same thing. I can't sleep at all because it's repetitive every time my body wants to fall asleep.
Sammee bruhh
I always do this but instead of falling think I’m having a heart attack or something
Mee too I think this might be true, when they say youre dying in your sleep.. everytime I get those it feels like Im falling deeeeper and deeper and deeper in a dark sleep it really feels like im dying.. I've never experienced this in my life, i felt weird when all my friends mentioned they've felt something like this
I believe it happened to me, but not sure.
It happens to me sometimes and I also have a faster heartbeat
I've had it many times its horrible, it feels like I'm dying if I can say that and I have to tense to stop myself from falling into it
I started having this over a year ago and now get them most nights. Does my head in as it ruins my sleep and i find it hard to drift off as i dont want it to happen again
This shit happens to me exactly
How r u now?
I only get ot when im in my own thoughts when i try to sleep and when i fall in my thoughts or something like that i get it
Does anyone get these after drinking alcohol and trying to fall asleep? Like this feeling of being punched in the chest and then waking up in a massive panic attack?
well, I’m not sure if it was cuz of the alcohol but i drank a beer last night and i got that shit three times in one night, and that was messed up.
I always get this 😂😂😭😭😭 sometimes I feel like I be falling then my body just twitch
Soon as i was about to sleep I get scared the shit outta me it felt like I was bout to fall
Same
I thought I was alone, I thought I was dying or possessed by an entity. I hate trucking so much!!
Sometimes when I’m dozing of going to sleep but still slightly awake I feel like I’m falling down a stair case
I'm barley experiencing this today I haven't got rid of it yet but I'm still trying right now
Not dangerious? It's dangerous if you're sleeping next to your wife and you keep accidentally kicking her while she is trying to fall asleep. 😅

Some people believes that the reason why you feel like falling is that the reaper is trying to take your soul out but your soul fell from him and you cameback to life and thats why you feel like falling.
That's I was thinking lol
That happens to me sometimes. Sometimes I feel like I'm tripping on a banana peel and I'm like "WOAH!!!!!" It's scary and annoying.
The stress of not knowing what this is makes it even worse. What worked for me is Manuka Honey. A teaspoon everyday will help. You won't need to take it very long.

This happened to me yesterday and today. Such a weird feeling.
this just happened while i was trying to fall asleep at 6:06am... is that normal?
I get these when I’m on a bad hangover… sucks can’t sleep for like 2-3 days
I dont think i feel like im falling, i would just shake up out of my bed or whereever i fall asleep, i used to think it was like a few minute nightmare
Instead of falling, I got kicked 😂
This happens to me all the time like everyday but I understand why now because I workout really late lol
