Tips on draining from the drain plug underneath. - This was an excellent video that got me started on changing the transmission fluid on my 2017 Countryman All 4 (F60) with 8-speed automatic. Thank YOU! I discovered some things along the way. 1) There was a wire bundle inside the trans fill port that prevented me from getting a suction tube into the fluid. Be careful (look with a flashlight). Forcing a tube may damage those wires. 2) You can drain the fluid underneath the car. First, remove the protective cover under the engine with 8mm socket (a cordless drill helps make this easy - about 10 fasteners). The drain plug is unique. There is a T40 Torx inside of a 17mm hex (Allen Wrench Fitting - Hex Key - This is a BIG hex fitting and you may need to go to the auto parts store to get it). First, remove the small inner Torx plug and some fluid will drain (this is the overflow plug) then use the 17mm Hex to pull out the plug. The overall plug is round. You can't miss it. I got 3 qts out on one drain. Put in exactly what you got out. Filled per the video. The torque for the overflow plug is 8 Nm. Torque for the big plug is 45 Nm. The torque for the Fill Plug is 45 Nm. 3) Finally, the recommended fluid for my transmission is BMW ATF 6. The Redline D6 fluid used in the video seems like an acceptable alternative. Although there are several warnings in the manual to use only the recommended fluid. 4) There are thin black O-ring gaskets on all the plugs (including the fill plug). Be careful and don't damage or lose those. If someone wants to try the official top-off technique, you should warm up the transmission fluid to 35-45 deg C. Do this by going from Drive to Reverse to park (several times w 2 second steps, foot on the brake, engine on). I assume you can use OBD2 to read temp. Or you could try a temp gun on the fluid pan. When at temp, w engine on, add fluid until it drains out the small overflow plug. Of course, the big plug should be in place. I have NOT tried this. Don't try this if you don't know what you are doing. There are 100 things that could go wrong like the car moving and coming off jack stands etc. Notes about the drain plug: It is about 1.5 feet (1/2 meter) to the back and 1.5 feet to the middle of the car from the fill port (looking from the top). Bottom of the transmission. Of course, you need to be under the car to get to it. On my transmission, the plug is oriented up-down (not sideways like the engine oil). There is only 0ne 17mm Hex with a Torx in the middle (in that area) so hopefully, that makes it easy. I learned the above from a mechanic system (which costs $) because this information was very difficult to find w searches. I hope this helps someone!
Hey dude, between the video and your expert instructions I am confident in tacking this job. You are right it is incredibly hard to get instructions on how to work on these German imports. Did you use the redline D6 ATF? Mini wants like $43 a quart for factory ATF which is crazy talk. Let me know if you can and thanks so much.
Hey man, many many thanks for posting this. It is super helpful as I have 2019 JCW which from the top anyway looks pretty much identical to yours. With your help I will start by making sure I can break loose the fill plug and from there see about either sucking out or draining as much fluid as I can. Some comments below are helpful in that regard but you made it all possible. The dealer wants $1500for a fluid change. Can you believe????Come on man! Dealers are always out to dry rape the public. Thanks again
Excellent video I changed my transmission fluid on my 2018 automatic F60 countryman SD ALL4 as it was lurching into gear and no reverse took it to a transmission specialist and he told me I needed a new auto box at £8000 I nearly fainted so decided to change the fluid It was jet black and yet Mini says it’s for life yeah right anyway I decided to change it until it came out red took 4 times now the car is running as it did when it was new 😀well happy for now …
Very very happy to hear that. I will try to post some more videos for the F60. I think soon i will replace the spark plugs and ignition coils as the car is about 50.000 mls. And maybe i will try to replace the transmission fluid from the bottom this time.
In my understanding in moderns cars, no one replace the filters, and i’m sure they are almost impossible to reach unless you remove or replace the bottom oil pan.
Hi does anyone know if you should be able to see the transmission fluid when you take out the T55 torx filler plug ( asking because I have looked and all I can see is gears and no fluid. Thank you
@@salvesed.o.c.4154 Thank You. I am currently running at 47,000kms/3yrs and my MINI F60 dealer says that they will check for the ATF at 100,000kms and change it if need be. My local mechanic says that it need be checked and changed at 60,000kms. What is the right thing to do?. Would it be a change of the ATF oil (or) flush of the ATF oil?. Thanks.
@@varmaTrini My wife car is about 40.000 miles i did not flush or change the fluid, I just removed 3qt and added 3 qt of fresh one...inside the gear box is mixed original ATF MINI with Red line D6 ATF... I will do same procedure in about 5000 miles to keep the fluid kind of new.
Basically, i did same procedure twice. I removed 1.5Q first time, and add 1.5Q. Driven around for like 10 min shifting gears so new and old fluid get mixed. And repeated the removal of 1.5Q and added 1.5Q fresh fluid
Dude, really really you couldn’t talk and explain how did you take the transmission fluid out? Did you go under the car? You couldn’t talk and say you know there’s people like me there we need an actual video that talks and explains what to do redo your video or explain with the boys on it honestly, please.
This is botched and has nothing to do with changing the oil. The oil is drained from the bottom of the oil pan - the oil pan also has to be removed to change the filter!

Thanks a lot Greg...i saw the wires that you mentioned and i was introducing the tube very very gently and not forcing if i feel any obstruction.
Thank you for the video. But i have some questions. What is diameter of a tube and how far is it go inside (20-30 cm) and what is direction?

The dealers are insane. They told me $1200 with a 9 month wait…
Can i just add from top without using the pump
Maybe with a funnel
How do you reprogram the error of changing the transmission fluid?
What would be the correct process to do the same to a regular hardtop

How is the car running today and how many km on it? Do you drive it with plenty of throttle?
When we change the transmission oil, is there anything called a ?transmission filter there that also need to filter?.Thanks.

Nice! I'll be doing the same procedure. "Lifetime Fluid" is a misnomer in my book.
