everyone loved this guy because he was the first wrestler not packed with muscles using "his head" to win matches. THAT is why everyone loved him
Well I know what your saying but you're wrong as many other wrestlers before him in the 70s where not body beautiful and had talent , dusty Rhodes for one.
I'm sure there were those who loved him for other reasons...
He was one of the first antiheroes. That's always attractive to people.
@@ferox965 i personally thought he was a better anti hero than steve austin. jake was the king of grit in my opinion.
@@jpbart1390 I wasnt born yet to watch him wrestle but after watching some of his work he does remind me a lot of steve austin he was a badass
My brother and I actually met Jake the Snake in Newark Airport the day after a show at the Meadowlands. I spotted his snakeskin boots, but my brother didn't believe it was him. Amyhow, our dad came over and told us he was there. We told a lot of airport personnel. My brother and I spoke to him for a few minutes.Cool guy.
a cool guy who had a worse childhood than i have. as a person, i find him quite relatable. wish i could meet him, but i'm in australia.
It sucked that Jake was never given the opportunity to be the WWF Champion. But at same time, he's been one of the few wrestlers in history to not need a title to get over with the fans. The fans loved the guy. To me, Jake was what Steve Austin became in the late 90s. He never sought to be a face but became one because he was awesome.
i personally would've liked jake to at least have the i.c. title. maybe they should've had him beat warrior for the world title instead of sgt slaughter. (no disrespect to slaughter, he was a good heel champion)
Not only was he never WWF Champion, but Jake never even had a run as intercontinental champion. That is a crime.
Jake would have gotten over in the same way Stone Cold did with Bret.
@Kev Dawg Also, Jake had a lot of issues for the entire company to ride on him. Just look at Kerry Von Erich...
Jake was right about the Ultimate Warrior. Almost everyone he worked for said he had a great gimmick but okce he ran to the ring and shaked the ropes that was the end if the match.
true that. re-watching warrior's match against hulk hogan, he looked tuckered out half way through. he almost collapsed gorilla press slamming him. it's pretty sad to see a dude so buff lacking stamina.
good to see Jake doing a lot better.
So sad his demons caught up to him
He had and probably still has a great mind for the business.
+Brittany 3:16 and father time.
yaa thats jake hes got shit for brains
jake's fucked up childhood was his main reason for his addiction. his fucked up childhood makes mine look good & i'm sure his ptsd is worse than mine.
@@garyenwards1608 if you ever meet jake, i dare you to say that to him!
Jake was one of the very best wrestlers ever
Better than Greg Valentine?
Better than Macho Man?
Always a sense of mystery about Jake Roberts...clever promo to sell the match, the look of him walking to the ring with that snake bag, the slow simmer of his matches leading to the short-arm clothesline then DDT...
Legendary.
@@terminat1 yes! Lol but I like Greg the Hammer!
@@HiNRGboy I wonder how Jake would respond if Greg tried to put the figure-four leg lock on Damien.
If Jake Roberts had been 15-20 years younger, making his debut in the late 90's, I think he might have ended up in Hollywood for legit.
Maybe ? But, really he was at the right time. He started in the 80's in the regionals and was with the Road Warriors in the Legion of Doom. Then he got into WWF at the time (late 80's) when wrestling just exploded. He's a legit legend.
A potentially legendary feud that never happened. Jake's comments here show just how paralyzed Vince and the WWF could be by money and marketing concerns. A promotion like the NWA would have taken this angle and run with it.
It's crazy how when I was young Hogan was the man. But now I'm grown and I see a bunch of politics that pisses me off about this dude Terry.
TheRuffington until he didn’t and let pretty much EVERYTHING go to his head and led to the absolute hated ending to Bret Hart title match at Wrestlemania
And then from their tried to do his gimmick at WCW which largely failed until he went Heel and his nWo reign just got tired and terrible after both his loss to Goldberg and Sting
I actually met Jake the Snake Roberts when I was about 10 years old..
My dad was a local jobber that took me backstage when the WWF was in the Bay Area..
Jake the Snake tried to show me his snake, not knowing I'm deathly afraid of snakes..
He laughed when I panicked, and I wouldn't let him take that snake outta the bag
Listen to what George Steele says in another interview. Vince wants to force his ideas down people's throats. He does not want fans telling him what they want.
Until the fans stop turning up for shows, Vince will sell you any bullshit.
at this point he wont ever listen to fans because the fans from out of market like UK and India still watch, he doenst give a fuck what fans in the doemstic market want anymore, even if NBC/universal and fox decide to drop WE of their channels he will jsuty air "tHundErDomE" from the WWE network. and cater to those indian, saudi, australlian and british smarks
@@greenkidd529 i'm australian & i ain't no fucking smark!
I think this interview was conducted around the time Jake was here in Ottawa for his standup tour. Got to have a short chat with him, very cool. When Covid lifts, if he comes to your town GO SEE HIM. You'll laugh ass off and hear awesome wrestling stories.
jake Roberts wasn't small, yet still looked like the everyday guy with a personality.fans over twenty got him.the kids didn't.the wwf could make more money with Hogan.
The ddt footage is the next holy grail of wrestling
listning to Jake talk is hypnotic
Of course the WWE wont ever put those matches on any of their DVDs . We're stuck with Hulk vs. Piper, Savage and Orndorff over and over and over again,
RIP WWE DVDs.
I loved Jake The Snake's heel music theme, "Trust me".
They should do wrestlers interview segments like the Snakepit today. Its a great way to sell a character and its a good way to build feuds with other guys. I love the Snake pit. I'd say that and the Kings Court were my two favourites.
Y2J's Highlight Reel Miz TV?
As a fan Vince made the wrong choice, but from a business perspective. He did make more money with Hogan than ever realistically could have made with The Snake.
agreed, but he could've made even more money with wendi richter & women's wrestling had he listened to cyndi lauper instead of the fabulous bitch moolah.
let's talk when you're Jake The Snake and Hulk Hogan Feud would have been perfect
1burnman Would have been awesome fued between these 2 guys
1burnman, I don't think so. Vince gave everything to Hogan, Sheik could have killed hogan as could have Snake but I think Sheik would have been the better Hogan Feud. I guess it comes down to what looks good for the business. Hogan may have had the look they wanted but he did not have the talent.
Bullshit hogan couldve killed both of them plus hogan had more talent than your never will be fucker
Richard Taylor watch “The Shiek” on Amazon Prime if you have it. The Iron Sheik” was a legitimate bad ass. I always viewed him as a pot bellied stereotype but he was a legitimate Iranian hero and bodyguard to the Shah. I always thought it was a wrestling work in the 80’s and he was just Sam from Detroit or something.
If he had wanted he could have destroyed Hulkamania before it was born at MSG, taken the WWF belt to Minneapolis and the AWA and pocketed $100,000.
He didn’t and the rest is history.
@@richardtaylor5461 The sheik could have very easily hurt Hogan if he wanted to . The owner from the AWA Verne tried to pay the Iron Sheik to break Hogan leg . But instead Sheik decided to put Hogan over like Vince wanted him to . Hogan even said so in his book . So knock off the crap about Hogan being a better Wrestler than Sheik . Who by the way was in the Olympics as part or team Iran in amateur wrestling
Can't say whether it was a good or bad call by Vince. But I wish he would have given Jake a solid push and maybe even a belt. I'd have loved a feud with Hogan but he was much better and would soil Vince's golden ticket. But could you imagine an IC feud with Mr. Perfect? That shit is what wet dreams are made of.
I think one of the biggest dream matches you can have is Jake The Snake vs Hulk Hogan and to this day they missed out on that match
Just imagine if they went with the Roberts/Hogan rivalry things would of changed
unfortunately, vince thought jake was too slim. if jake were his old man's size, (grizzly smith at 6'8" & 350lbs) i think vince would've continued that angle, but jake was only 6'6" & 249lbs, so he looked too thin next to the 6'7" 302lb hulkster. it might've worked out better earlier in the '80s when hogan was the young cocky heel, though.
Jake should've been champ
No, at least not at that time. Hogan deserved to be top dog and Macho Man would have been next in line.
He would have made an awesome champion..... Another screw up by Vince....
I know Vince don't listen to the fans
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot. THANK YOU!!!! Finally someone here that makes actual fucking sense. Stupid wrestling internet smarks that really believe they know better that the man that made BILLIONS over the years off of it. Sorry but it’s true, Jake wouldn’t have brought in even one tenth of the money as Hogan. Funny thing is Jake himself KNOWS THAT...That’s why he knows he would have been better off jobbing out to Hogan than being turned baby face.
@@Musiclover19 Yeah and people like you are too blind to see that wrestling is a business and in business you sometimes have to take a chance .
Snake is a Legend - I was about 8 years old and was at the Civic Center in Providence When Snake Faced Hogan. What was interesting was the match was on after the intermission which was RARE because Hogan was always LAST - Hogan Won by count-out after throwing powder in Jakes Face. At the end of the night - they announced another event next month and when the announcer was done talking - some suit ran up the aisle and handed a card to the announcer and the announcer said and YES there will be a RETURN bout between Hulk Hogan and Jake the Snake Roberts. The Crowd went Nuts. At the return bout Hogan Pinned the snake!
I always wondered why we never got that fued that’s like the only fued we didn’t get from that era
I didnt know that they taped a WWF tv taping in Montreal? I always thought that it was only house show in those days in Montreal!
Jake is such a good person
Should've had Hogan and Jake work together after Jake's 1991 heel turn. Would've made sense, given Hogan was feuding with Taker and Jake was aligned with Taker.
They had 1 match that I know of. WWF @ Springfield, MA - Civic Center - January 17, 1992 Hulk Hogan (sub. for Randy Savage) pinned Jake Roberts at 6:30 with a roll up. The Mountie also beat Bret Hart for the IC belt that same car.
of course we can't have Jake being more over than Hogan
Vince had a lot of money invested in Hogan, Hogan needed to be and was the most over man in the company.
+MrKing8050 Vince made the right call. Split crowds aren't good business. Back then he could manipulate the crowd most of the time with this being an obvious exception.
Everything I ever heard about Jake vs. Hogan came back to one thing. They were doing a dark main event during a SuperStars taping and when Jake DDT’d Hogan the place went nucking futs with Jake getting a face reaction. They squashed the angle immediately,.
Release the FOOTAGE Vince!
Always enjoyed Jake the 🐍
I would love to see the match Jake had with Hogan. We may never get it, but who knows what would have happened.
Jake The Snake is top five slick villains in wrestling.
Hulk was always stay in Character
I'm sorry Jake and I meet him I hope I get the chance to meet him again I would say this we are sorry but we love you to much you are awesome
was it snowing outside?...camera dude get that falling snow to really shine in the background!!
Jake was 10 times the wrestler Hogan ever was!
+Brett Moth This is the 1st case (not really) that Vince didn't go with what the crowd wanted. This put back the attitude era years. They were ready for it then. Hulk the star DDT' and everyone chanted the name of the heel in the story.
+Brett Moth Hogan made more money in a day than Jake will ever see in his life. He got more over and drew more than any wrestler in history. Since it's entertainment and not a legit sport that's all that matters.
He is like 98 now, if I am counting correctly. Leave the man alone.
The only wrestler that would bring a snake to the ring and use it.
Hogan got 1 look at how over Jake was & shit it
Funny how on the WWE DVD, Jake shies away from speaking specifically of this alleged Piper's Pit. And of course, WWE, with the potential to sell thousands upon thousands of more DVDs, with this never before seen, sought after footage, does not show anything of the alleged the Piper's Pit. Good chance it never happened, or at least not the way Jake remembers it. If Jake was really getting cheered over Hogan in 86, in the ultimate height of Hulkamania, he wouldn't have just gone on to have a decent to upper card face run, which he did, he would have went on to become the most popular wrestler ever by a landslide, regardless of who the bookers were.
as an unapologetic hulkamaniac, i honestly think that would've been interesting. jake turning face & hulk turning heel simultaneously. just like bret hart & stone cold (jake's brainchild) steve austin. btw, i think you mean the snake pit back in '86 when they faced off big noting themselves. it was on dailymotion, but i think they wiped it. it's on facebook though.
Jake had...problems that made him unreliable so they couldn't bank on his popularity even if they wanted to
That's crazy I remember this
They had a match in Providence RI in December 1986 which is also on you tube. Jake was still a heel and was getting more cheers than Hogan so Vince scrapped it.
Revisionist history.
imo
The Snake was always a kick-ass performer.
imo
in other words it was like how fans chant cm punk now
This actually would not have split the audience/marketing. If anything you would have had two marketable athletes. There were TONS of Hot Rod shirts everywhere and that only made Hogan that much bigger/better. You can’t have a great hero without a great heel. I understand the 80’s were a much different mindset from kayfabe and clear lines between heels and faces so I can see Vince pulling the plug. Today? He’d give up a testicle for a feud that would draw this much media attention, gates and network subscriptions.
Jake the snake Roberts.legend
those 35 cents Vince invested in Jake is probably the best ROI he ever got out of anyone...
Always said jake should have been champion
Had Jake not led the life he did outside the ring and devoted the time and effort that Hulk did to wrestling then maybe Jake would have got the push
Or at least a writing gig as mentioned by Vince, what a waste
yea if ever a case of wasted talent, this is up there with the greatest
+hallnoats4ever Well I believe it was being refused a writing or production gig that led to Jake leaving the WWF in 92 and going on to have that feud with Sting in WCW which went really sour, and produced one of the cheesiest pieces of wrestlecrap ever seen.
Then of course he came back in 96 in much worse shape than when he'd left the WWF 4 years prior, with his backstage lifestyle dragging him down hard.
I think he was then given the writing or production role in the WWF in 97 but because he still loved to wrestle, he didn't transition very well and his alcoholism and drug addiction only got worse, so he got fired for it shortly thereafter.
+Obi-Juan I heard that WWE had a strict no drug policy and Jake called up one day and said if someone didn't bring him some crack he would not show up for that nights gig.
Jake also admitted to holding Vince up for more money minutes before going out and wrestling Undertaker
Vince said if Jake simply stayed away from drugs he would still be writing for WWE
+hallnoats4ever actually wasn't for money that he was gonna refuse to wrestle Taker, as a result of being told he wasn't going to be a writer, he wanted release from his contract to go to WCW, Vince refused initially so that's when Jake pulled that one, in honesty I feel he was right too, I think it is just wrong for a human to blatantly lie to another, very low
Jake was way before his time awesome guy minus the drug addiction
No....The time back then was THE time....THe time today is shit
+lazerbeak2125 your right about that but he had a great gift
Hogan feared Jake especially when it came to money!
I didn't hear Hogan's name being part of that decision, did you? Jake was pretty explicit that it was Vince who nixed the plan.
By that time hulkamania was dying and fans were starting to hate Hogan who would hear Hogan sucks the only time I like Hogan was when he was hollywood
fans costing a wrestler a push...the irony
Jake should be Wwe champion before retire
They should have went along with the fans instead of pandering to hogan
C’mon Jake! Don’t blame us for costing you money. Vince did it!
Hulks "pythons" was a gimmick so this is like him saying Haku didn't have a hard head, or Mr Perfect wasn't perfect, or Beefcake wasn't actually a barber. So much salt.
He looks like jack Nicholson
By the way king cobras do have fangs lol
Lol Yes they do
It seems like everyone had a problem with Hogan. I haven't heard one good story yet. 🤔
I like Jake but i dont get why he says "not really" when talkin about Hogan havin bigger "pythons" thn him...he did...unless Jake was talkin about an actual Python then it was quite apparent to see hahaa
Yes he means the snake
Interestingly I hated Hogan as kid growing up.
Crazy business your not going to Main event Mainia because you are too over and the fans chant your name so your push is off were pulling the plug and going in another direction
“His pythons were larger…. Not really “. I’m no fan of hulk, but he was much larger than Jake.
DDT.
Yet rock and Austin were 2 faces when they fought
Can Jake ever tell a story where he's not working? None of this ever happened.
Okay I always love Jake The Snake as a kid but he is delusional when he says Hogan's arms weren't bigger than his they were clearly several inches bigger, come on Jake. Lol
He's referring to his actual snake(s) (Damien, etc.) when he refers to HIS pythons, not his arms, the way Hogan did.
@@jetuber oh ok, I guess I misunderstood... I was like clearly Hogan's arms are bigger than Jake's lol

I like jake but he has been known to make shit up especially when it comes to this
Subject. Maybe a little jealous of hogan. I have e seen one of these in which he says he also body slammed andre for hulk did. I call bull shit in that
Lmao blame the fans for him losing Millions yeah millions of dollars of cocaine went up this guy's nose he was never supposed to be the champion he wasn't responsible enough he wasn't good enough to be the champion everybody says that he's got some of the best promos no way...
Jake the Snake is a true wrestler!!! Seriously love Hogan as a wrestler but personal he such two face sell out!
Jake "the snake" Plummer
i heard it through a inmate if you think youre the baddest theres allways a badder dog i wasent in jail or prison i have a clean record jake hulkster was at the top do youre thing take the vitamin king out
I'm sorry. it's nothing against Jake but I don't believe the Snake Pit incident ever happened. Forget how you feel about Hogan today. This was 1986. The height of Hulkamania. I dont care who you are. if you attacked Hulk Hogan you are getting booed. yes Jake was a cool heel but Hogan was THE BABYFACE, the biggest name in wresting. it just doesn't make sense. now maybe it did happen and there were a few cheers and Jake's exaggerating. but then where's the video. this was supposedly a TV taping
Fuck Hulk Hogan
2:25......coke residue
🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍
1:17 not really lol.
He's clearly delusional, love the snake, but it's so clear to see Hogan's arms were several inches larger than Jake's ever were
Thanks a lot fans you ruined a feud. by chanting for the wrong guy.
Jake had the absolute worst luck!!
He would have wasted all that cash on drugs, booze and women/hookers. No reason to look back and frown when he probably would have died way back when from that lifestyle.
+John Jones "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars, the rest I just squandered" George Best
very true
oloughlj 81...You honestly believe the ONLY reason Jake “the Snake” Roberts became a drug addict and alcoholic was because one of that one shot from the Hokey Tonk Man? BS...the fact is Jake comes a very troubled past with a horrible human being for a father and frankly he’s just a bottom line addict. If he was making the big money that he could have been making with Hogan, he definitely would have done the exact same thing he did with the, still pretty good money, he made when they turned him face. He WOULD have blown it on drugs and booze.
Fuck Hulk Hogan
