They are going to have to really improve battery life, and install a huge number of chargers if they think we are all going to be switching to electric vehicles. Also, a bus-stop like shelter for bikers at chargers would be nice.
I think if I was you, I'd have spent a night at that hotel at John O'Groats, before continuing on. I've driven tired before, and experienced little micro-sleeps, it's too bloody dangerous, and I refuse to do it anymore. Which makes the 2-hour time limit at service stations a bloody safety risk.
Well done on the effort, I couldn't put myself through that.

No different in that respect to Petrol, you have to go to the petrol station when you need fuel don’t you.
It’s just electric takes longer to refill at the moment. There are chargers everywhere - but yes at times there are issues with whether they are working or available at the time.
      It definitely has to improve/increase

    Hey Bruce,
Entertaining content as always. A note on the sometimes needing to plug in multiple times to start the station you showcased about 8 minutes into the video. These bikes have a fairly narrow 'timeout' window between attaching the cable and initiating charge from the station. Your first attempt, which failed, was likely because you waited too long to press the START button on the screen. In my experience you increase your chance for success exponentially if you initiate everything possible from the station BEFORE physically plugging in the bike. Even if the station says, "please plug in first" you can usually safely disregard that and initiate the sequence first. Plug in after everything is going and it'll be smooth sailing. As always, cheers from California.

I've been following marc travels on youtube who is also on an electric bike and his experience of using credit card/phone to pay in England is quite different to yours, he is often hit by needing to download apps for charging, however he is using more rural routes than you, so that's probably why. Shame to have such performance and having to hold back so often because of poor range. I'm not sure how it will change in the near future which is a real shame as I like electric bikes but tour a lot as well.

Wow, this is such an awesome video. My wife and I both watch in fascination (we both ride Ribelles) at the amazing roads and scenery you are discovering. It is amazing! The editing and flow of the video is top notch. Waiting for TeaPotOne BBC Documentaries next.
However, we both do cringe a little at how you are choosing to only use 60% of the battery in your rides. Stopping every 40-60 miles to recharge. That seems to make your ride so much longer. I get that a lot of the single chargers in your journey are not very reliable. But we'd hate to ride like that's. We ride until 10% down or so, and always charge back up to 95% even if it takes a little longer. Our Energica's may thermally slow down on repeat charges but the final ramp down doesn't happen until 90%+. So we typically map our legs at 120 miles each. Maybe 110 if doing highways. Usually leaving us enough reserve to ride conservatively to another charger 20ish miles away if the main charger wasn't working. If the break is longer (nap or long lunch) we definitely take advantage to let it hit 100%.
But that all that said, great video!

      Thanks Rick,
I went off of advise from the dealership regarding recharging, and from my own experience when riding EV’s. Personally I’d rather have the buffer and shorter recharge time from utilising the 20-80% charge margins, but absolutely understand what you’re saying and why you go your way 👍

This was fine if you ride on your own. I and thousands of others ride in groups, I’d like to see a group of riders of electric motorcycles try a 200 plus mile trip and see how long it takes. Say Birmingham to The Raven Cafe to Horeshoe pass to Cat and Fiddle.

We did this on motorbike TV last year, and it flopped. We had 3 of us on electric bikes and the charging network completely let us down.
We ended up not being able to do the ride we’d intended and cut everything short so we could continue the filming for the next day 🤦‍♂️

Really strange that Energica did not or could not sort you out with their most advanced E-Bike, as this has simply underlined to everyone (sceptics and non-sceptics alike) that any king of pleasure touring/trips on electric bikes (at the moment) are just not viable, or at least not going to be enjoyable. Kudos for taking this challenge on, but you were hamstrung from the start by not being given a bike that is at least able to cover 100-120 miles between charges.
One of the most interesting elements of this, for me is your revelation about the infrastructure just not being biker-friendly - ie no shelter - and the fact that the charging stations (out in the sticks) seem to be hidden away. Also, that the App/tech are not up-to-date with charging stations that are out of order, or that some are not even shown.
Really not the way to encourage the up-take of electric machines... big missed opportunity by Energica. It would not have made a night & day difference to your experience, but this has just put 99% of people off.

Got stop by a driver today saying I am going to Slow on a 20mph speed limit, my speed monitor says 20mph keep 19 18mph be safe, on Google Maps says going 15mph can't be right, get lot of drivers overtake 20 30 roads
    Just done cbt

Speed shown on your Speedo is always actually slower than you’re going - hence why google maps speed (based on gps) shows you going slower than your Speedo says.

Your moment in the cold when you couldn't remember where you were, or if you were alone is scary!
I walked home from a night out in Edinburgh one time in -6C. Fell asleep as I was quite "refreshed" from the pub and ended up sleeping for two hours, outdoors.
I woke up at 4am (no taxis) and I walked the 4 miles home and only stopped severely shaking with cold 1 mile from home! Stupid laddie! Never again.
I don't know how you function on such small snoozes! More power (literally) to you Bruce!

      Cheers Alan,
I’ve never needed much sleep since I was about 18 tbh, I started working on the doors whilst at Uni and then became a dad halfway through, so sleep wasn’t something I got a lot of! 🤣
Then working in the old bill I was always an overtime bandit so again I’d just function on about 1-3hrs sleep most nights.
Definitely find I sleep a lot more now I’m adjusting to ‘normal’ life though 🤣👍

OK I have a question for you regarding your rides and the cold.
Why do you not make use of those small petrol hand warmers they cost around 6 pounds and they are so good, you don't even need to use them for your hands. In winter I use them in my jacket, I light it, hang it around my neck so it lays on my chest and it keeps me warm while I ride.
You ride in Scotland and its cold anyway so using one of these would probably stop you freezing.
A small can of lighter fuel, the device comes with a little refiller can and a bag, it stays working for up to 12 hours on a thimble full of lighter fuel, they are fantastic little devices, the only thing you have to be aware of is the CO2 but so long as you use them out side that's not a problem, it's not a lot of CO2 but in a restricted space it could have an effect maybe.
But they are absolutely fantastic little devices that will keep you warm as you ride.
The one I use has a butterfly on it, and is polished aluminium.
You can use it on the motorcycle or bicycle or just walking, easy to refuel, not so easy to start, but once going will stay on for upto 12 hours.

@@teapotone Do you have to plug it into the bike to make it work? If so the warmer could be for while you are stopped charging.
For around 6 pounds it's something I would not be with put now.
