  • England to Sicily Road Trip Day One.
1,700 miles down south from Ipswich in the UK, to Sicily, Italy. The little Fiat 500 has 195,000 miles on the clock and is towing a trailer with my Triumph Bonneville attached- the entire way.
For day one, our aim was to get through France, Belgium, Luxembourg and into Germany for the night.

Those cheap 1" straps stretch like crazy especially when they're new. Use 2" straps and keep an eye on them when they're new and you'll never have to worry about that. Safe travels!

You'll be better putting the front straps on the handlebars. When you ratchet them down it'll compress the fork springs and keep the straps tight as the forks try to rise again. All the best. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I think you should strap the bike from the handlebars and the rear grab rail to compress the suspension so it can't move. You seem to have it strapped too low down.

I strap mine like Norrie recommends, but last month when I was traveling thieves stole my trailer with the two bikes. On the bright side I know the bikes got there safely and it took the thieves a bit of time to get them off the trailer.

Gypsies man Gypsies. Also strap the bike down where the suspension is compressed down about 1/3 rear and 1/2 front. So I would strap the front around the top of the bottom crown and rear around the grab bars just above the rear shocks

Your Tenerife trip inspired me and a friend to do a roadtrip in the summer!
So we did a 10 country, 4000 mile trip through Europe, headed through the Swiss alps, and visited Monaco the day after the Grand Prix, and hit the autobahns in Germany, visited random little places all over, and did the whole south coast of France and Spain and ended up in gibraltar…….in a 22 year old Peugeot 206!
Watching that video led me onto carrying out a bucket list item I’ve always wanted to do but never had the confidence to, and it was the best thing I’ve ever done!
So much so, I’m currently planning next years trip to Italy!
So I’m looking forwards to this series of videos!👌🏼

I've always had large cars, Jaguar XJR, Mercedes but the most recent, my BMW 325 I sold 5 years ago and bought a Fiat 500 Cult. This was largely as I was driving everywhere for work, and let's face with fuel prices going up there is only so long you can live with 20-25 MPG. So I bought the Fiat with 20,000 miles on, 3 years old. It was a stop gap measure while I got the business going (we had not long started our own business). Problem is, it was so damn good, park it anywhere, 50-60MPG, it's got leather, climate control. I flippin fell in love with it! It's now got 117,000 miles on, and, dare I say it, so reliable. You will have to prise the keys out of my cold dead hands. It still looks like new, and still looks modern, and it's not just another box on wheels. We found a lovely Fiat specialist locally who deals with all the services and the odd repairs. So far the biggest thing to go wrong was the gear selector cable. Love it, Fiat really did themselves proud with the 500.

Screws not zip ties. Drill holes and put screws in. Zip ties are easy to snap with a bit of torque with that number plate holder flapping in the wind. Even easier with sharp edges.
Put straps from handle bar and compress the front suspension, that way it is under constant tension and won’t loosen as it bounces around going down the road. You can put some on the rear grab handle for extra security, also compressing the rear suspension (but not necessary if the front buttoned down tight)

On the theft side, in my experience, you are more likely to lose your Bonneville in London than Palermo however the old mantra of 'lock it or lose it' is a good one that applies anywhere, a bit of towing advice is when in transit buy a rain cover and cover your 'bonnie' up , keeps the weather off (and any prying eyes) it will also prevent the loss of items like side panels !! Bon Voyage and stay safe.

Hi Freddie and Monica, great start to your adventure. As I mentioned before we are in Sicily touring in our MoHo, we have an electric ride on scooter on the back which has been great for exploring the narrow hill towns. There are always a lot of doom mongers, but touch wood, we have only found the Sicilians helpful and friendly ( don't call them Italians though...) With normal precautions like good locks we have not had any thefts or other concerns at all. It feels much safer to us than say Tottenham. Enjoy the rest of your travels. Malcolm

Freddie, when you rely on cable ties alone to secure something in a "dynamic" environment, like on your light board, if possible always use two or even 3 cables ties, it will be far more secure. When you use tie down straps to secure your bike on the trailer, first lean the bike over at 10 degrees off the vertical and remove any slack on the straps on side the bike is leaning towards. Then pull the bike against the straps on the leaning side until the bike is vertical. The suspension will compress as the bike become vertical. This will keep it more secure as the suspension will "push" against the straps holding the bike down tighter and more securely.

I’m so excited for you guys to go to Sicily. I’ve been there with my family in June and it’s amazing. We rented a car and did a big tour of the island for a week.
Make sure you visit Favara (Farm Cultural Park), probably one of a kind art project/ accommodation area 👌 Also Cefalú and Taromina are must see places

Love your tours, and the way you are exited for your setup and I have to say it’s great! Loving to travel with my VW California and about to buy the Speedmaster in November 😊 Will definitely go for a trailer, to take it with me! We are having our Caravan parked permanently in Sardegna so with a trailer would be the perfect setup… Looking forward for the upcoming days of your journey! Stay safe and have fun and don‘t worry to much getting robbed in Sicily!

Hi Freddie and Monica, didn’t even know Irish Ferries were working out of Dover. Just back from England with them. Best of luck with your travels and thanks for giving the Irish a thumbs up on everything. Go n’éiri go gheall - good luck

Thanks Richard! I had no idea Irish Ferries had added the Dover route until I booked the ferry on Friday (a very nice surprise!)🙂

Hi Freddie and Monica hopefully you have discovered the left hand indicator light on the trailer board had stopped working? All 4 flashing on the car but only the right hand on the trailer board probably the globe due to the impact with the road. Large hose clamp would be an improvement on the cable ties if you are unable to drill through the metal of the trailer. Safe travels

Trailer lights zip tied to the back will be lost along the way, I’ve got no doubt!
