  • Join me today as I share great tips on caring for the Schefflera Arboricola Plant. The Schefflera is a great plant for any home or office. It's leaves have the appearance of an umbrella shape giving it the nickname, umbrella plant. Just follow my simple instructions and you will have a thriving and beautiful plant for many years. One correction: This plant outdoors can reach 10-15 feet tall or more. Pruning indoors will keep your plant at the size you desire. Thanks for watching! Donna Joshi

    I have well over 10 now. They like what we like temp wise. In the winter time I water maybe once a month and run a humidifier or mist them daily. They propagate so easily I give them away like most people do with spider plants.
    They have been my favorite since I was a kid and watched the show "Under the Umbrella Tree".😊

    I had one years ago. I just got a new one. It is so root bound. I’m trying to wait a few weeks before repotting because this is the fall...I really don’t think I can wait until next Spring. Wish me good fortune😀

    My advice to anyone with these plants is to keep the soil dry. They're pretty indestructible but soggy soil will kill them. I let the soil dry out and then give them a light watering once every few weeks. If you see the leaves are sagging a bit, add water.

    Hi dear how to propagate this plant ? please advice and why my plant isn't growing tall or shouting new leaves at the top ? And what lengths to prune to make it busy look ? Please make a video on this all topics thank you

    • @DonnaJoshi
      @DonnaJoshi  6 лет назад +9

      Aisha Begum to propagate cut off the growing tip of one of the branches, then strip off all but the top two leaves. Dip the cut end in Miracle-Gro® FastRoot1® Dry Powder Rooting Hormone and stick it 1 to 2 inches down in a small container filled with moist Miracle-Gro® Indoor Potting Mix. Be sure to keep the soil consistently moist as the cutting grows. To help your plant bloom you need to prune just a little. 😊

    I live in a cool temperate zone (Melbourne Australia) and have planted one of these ("Madame de Smet" variety) in our rainforest garden today, as it is mid-spring. I am hoping to keep it going in the garden bed in spring, summer and early autumn then lift it from the garden and containerise it for the winter in a greenhouse. What do you think of this plan? I love the look of it in the garden.

    I live in PA. I have had my umbrella for decades but it never really looked healthy. I just kept trying because it never actually died. It is the healthiest ever now that I have it squished in a corner of my kitchen at my big picture window. My Mom never covered that window and I don't want to either. We like the view. So it gets full and bright morning sun. Also, I put it into a large, deep pot a couple years back. I don't remember why I did that unless I knew it was getting root bound. So it is on wheels to clean around it. But I have had no leaf loss and it has gotten even fuller and lusher. This is the first ever for those conditions.

    Mine started out well in late Summer but then Winter hit, and the room is dark and cold. Many leaves went almost black and dropped off. I relocated it into a warmer spot, in the bathroom next to a window. It's hanging on but a lot of leaves are still blackening and dropping. Hope it recovers in Spring, or I'll salvage some healthy tips for propogation.

      "While they make fantastic indoor trees, schefflera plants develop calcium oxalate crystals. These crystals tend to be a major irritant both to people and to animals.
      Most people have limited issues with skin irritation. On rare occasions, it may cause an itchy rash, but most people seem to be unharmed. For safety’s sake, I still recommend using a quality pair of work gloves when you’re pruning. Wash thoroughly if you get any sap on you."

    • @DonnaJoshi
      @DonnaJoshi  Год назад +1

      If it's dropping leaves it's most likely been over watered. Don't worry. Let it dry approximately a week especially if it is still wet. I don't know what size plant you have but, I would water approximately 1/2 cup water weekly if you have a 6 to 8 inch pot. If smaller 1/4 to 1/3 cup weekly and if bigger than 8 inches approximately 3/4 to 1 cup weekly. I hope this is helpful to you. They really don't like too much water. :)

    I forgot to mention that I have lived in three houses over these years. All in the NE. But different light conditions. Though I would summer this on my front porch in the summer. But that never made much change. I should have the original pathos plants, but I did not know how to move with them. I should have my spiders, too. But I got tired of them and let them die. I am trying again with pathos and aloe. Pathos is doing well. Aloe wasn't doing well all winter, so I planted it outside under a tree. It did not do well all summer until I started giving it acidic water for 11 days. Now ten babies are growing up. I will have to bring it in and pot it for the winter. I bought some plants in gallon size containers yesterday. Can I use a gallon size pot for that when I bring it in> Or is it too deep?

      Affected leaves develop small, water-soaked areas that quickly grow and blacken. Infected leaves may drop. Removing affected leaves or entire, severely-affected plants and keeping healthy, uninfected leaves dry will limit further problems. Hope this helps. 😊

    • @DonnaJoshi
      @DonnaJoshi  4 года назад +2

      This could be a number of things. First check your plant location. It prefers a sunny window with indirect light. Too much water can cause bacteria so be sure not to overwater. I have a 6inch pot in which I water 3/4 cup weekly. If you have a 4 inch water only 1/2 cup weekly and if you have an 8 inch pot water one cup weekly. Make sure there are no drafts. You also can trim the black spots. Possibly this can stop what could be fungus. Sometimes repotting will help. I use Miracle Gro twice as fast potting soil from Lowes. Hope this was helpful. :)

      @@DonnaJoshi I appreciate you sharing the info but nobody should follow your watering instructions EXACTLY. We have to pay attention to the plants ourselves and observe. And most importantly, we need to LEARN how to water. We all have different growing conditions, and following someone else's guidance without question can be dangerous. Not here to bash you, i do appreciate your time sharing all this info. Just want people to know that they must put in their due diligence to understand what is happening and why.

      I always cringe when persons give specific directions on any aspect of plant care. We live in different places, different home environments( dry , moist) .Just because a plant lets for example say likes moist soil in its natural habitat, doesnt mean it likes that same environment in a home environment. Hope that makes sense.
      not bashing here either.

    I have had my dwarf umbrella tree for about 2 years now, maybe more. It is only 10-14” tall. It used to have 3 plants in the pot. But one died. I am down to 2 and those 2 look to be in good conditon. Problem is they haven’t gotten any bigger. Someone told me I bonzai’ed it by transplanting it before the roots outgrew the original plant so I repotted into the original size pot about 2 months ago. I bottom water every 7 days or so and only a little (1/3 - 1/2 cup). Based on your video I am thinking it needs more light and more frequent fertilization. Any other tips?

    • @DonnaJoshi
      @DonnaJoshi  3 года назад +1

      By repotting a couple of times I would just give it a good rest to recoup. Sit it in a nice indirect sunny place and it should be fine. Don't fertilize till spring. It is also going in its dormant stage so you probably won't see growth till spring. :)
