Got stuck with one of, if not the worst, coach in franchise history with Mike NoWin. Then the franchise doubled down and hired Dingleberry..who was still miles ahead of NoWin, as pathetic as that sounds. Had good coaches with Harbaugh and Reid and showed what he was capable of.

He is the ultimate under dog story: Started as a backup QB at a small school. One of the first on the run passers, leads them to a bowl game win! Gets drafted to a horrible team w/ multiple coaching & coordinator changes every year. Finally gets a competent HC, barely misses the SB, gets a concussion the next season & Harbaugh doesn’t let him finish his SB playoff run, gets traded to the Chiefs which was a horrible franchise, creates a winning culture & makes them contenders, including their 1st playoff win since the 1960s. Then, has his best year so far, leads the league in passer rating & almost every statistical category (including deep balls which haters thought he couldn’t do.) & Again, right when the pieces are there & everything is coming together, he gets traded to another bad team WFT. He creates a winning culture (again) at WFT, starts a playoff run, & turns around the franchise. Then he has a life threatening injury, comes back & leads WFT to the playoffs. As for stats: Lead the league in passer rating & QBR many seasons, 19th all time in rushing yards, best TD-INT ratio, top 25 all time in passing yards (right above HOF QB Jim Kelly), top 5 winning percentage in the last decade, top 25 all time for career completion %, the list goes on! This man was never set up to win & always made it happen! That’s the most impressive to me. No one likes to talk about situations, but the great QBs of his generation were set up for success & Alex never was, he had to really fight for it at every step.

Most underrated/underappreciated QB I've seen. Niners did him dirty and KC I would say to a degree. People always get lost in the flashy aspects of the game and think of that as the end-all-be all. Dude was solid in fundamentals and was better than most and even the flashy mindset of today from fans and media.

Alex Smith was the bridge between my father and I, a rather shaky relationship.
But he was the catalyst between us in bonding a great father-son relationship. The great times we had together watching Alex play every Sunday is unbeatable.
Alex has been a staple in our family for over a decade now. We have Alex themed everything all over the house; signed Utah helmet, Alex decal on the mirror for some reason, Alex calendar month from 2017, KC and Washington banners (I’m still kinda pissed at SF) , and some other miscellaneous items.
We followed his career since Utah, as we lived in Orem, Utah while he played college, and I can’t believe it’s been 16 years since. I will surely miss watching him and it’s a pretty damn sad day for me.
    Thank you, Alex.

I think the cool thing about Smith is how much he took Mahomes under his wing as a rookie and got him up to speed. Patrick Mahomes has talked about how much Alex Smith helped him out in that first year and it probably set the tone for him to step up as a leader when it was his time. Smith wasn't going to teach him to throw the long ball, be athletic, or read a play book, but he did show him how much time and effort it takes to succeed as an NFL QB

Smith retired through force. No one wanted him on the field again. He was there because of contract obligations and Redskin quarterback injury and ineptitude, along with NFC ineptitude. And despite everything, he still managed to be the best QB on the roster. It was the perfect storm for a miracle comeback story and Smith and circumstances made it possible. I promise you that he wanted to get back on the field again. If he's retiring, then it's because no more than half the league told him that he has no chance to see the field again.

This man can walk into retirement with his head held high. He is a perfect example of determination and dedication. Name one other person who would come back from what he did and prove he can still play in the NFL.
Edit after a couple of years you'll see him back in football in some capacity. He'd make a great coach IMO think about what he went through in SF. How many coaches and systems did he go through there?
