  • Amidst the pantheon of Greek gods, few are more revered than Artemis, Goddess of the hunt, chastity, and the Moon; Mistress of Animals, Daughter of Zeus and twin sister to Apollo. Famed for her pledge to never marry Artemis has stood as a feminist icon for millenia. It seems only fitting then that NASA has named after her a trailblazing mission that will see both the first woman and first PoC set foot on the Moon.
The Artemis program is split between the SLS missions, which will eventually bring the human crew to the Moon, and the support missions, which will bring everything else. That includes robotic rovers, the Human Landing System, as well as moonbase and Gateway components along with all of the logistical support and infrastructure that they will require.

This video makes me think of the book “Artemis”. It’s written by the same guy who wrote The Martian. I’m currently reading Artemis and it’s about a colony on the Moon. They get aluminum from the soil and a byproduct of them mining aluminum from the soil, they get oxygen. So they have more oxygen than ever needed, and everything is made out of aluminum

Good although hasty summary - thanks!
Mixing standard and retro units is always confusing, so we'd be happy if you stick with int'l standard. (After all, the future is here)

I wonder if there would be a way to right the Artemis lander in the event it falls over on landing. The feet for the lander are not very far apart and lander is tall making it more easy to tip over .Maybe some kind of winch or jack might be considered . Maybe feet that can adapt themselves to an inclined surface or open to larger diameter

The landing site will not be inclined hopefully. Though I'm assuming there is a contingency plan for it falling over.

@3:40 "The SLS is the single most powerful rocket humanity has ever built...", yes, lets ignore the SpaceX Super Heavy/Starship combo which has twice the power and twice the payload of SLS.

60s Apollo program cost 1.8 billion and took 9 years. It is 6 years into the Artemis program and already cost NASA more than 8 billion without a working spacecraft.

a few things to consider. First, the apollo program did not cost 1.8 billion dollars. It cost 25.8 billion dollars. Adjust this for inflation, it would be, at least 10x that (so 258 billion dollars). Second, the artemis program is a MASSIVE program. It's not just about going to the moon, its a multi-decadal program intended to put a base on the moon, go to mars and eventually beyond.

How are we expecting to go to mars in the mid 2030s if the early Artemis missions are early 2030s?

Artemis 1 is already complete and the artemis 2 is scheduled in 2026.

Its an international collaboration. Also, NASA is very open minded when it comes to private companies (national or international) and other agencies to solve the challenges they face.
