- The show that allowed Disney to be dark on TV. After so many years does it still take flight? Let's take a look at the hit series, Gargoyles.
Gargoyles is an American animated television series produced by Walt Disney Television and distributed by Buena Vista Television, and originally aired from October 24, 1994, to February 15, 1997. The series features a species of nocturnal creatures known as gargoyles that turn to stone during the day. After spending a thousand years in an enchanted petrified state, the gargoyles (who have been transported from medieval Scotland) are reawakened in modern-day New York City, and take on roles as the city's secret night-time protectors.

I'm still annoyed Patrick Stewart never joined the Trekie cast of voice actors on this show. He actually had a Shakespearian background so it would have been perfect.
Ben Wasserman He might’ve been busy or too expensive. Or maybe they didn’t have a fitting character for him. Imagine if they brought him in as Merlin.
@@ztslovebird Their Star Trek and Gargoyles-Character doesn't have to be similar. I mean, compare Deanna Troi with Demona. They are literally polar opposites. The same goes for Walter Koenig from The ORiginal Series: In TOS, he was basically a comic relief-character. In Babylon 5, he was a Psi Cop with a really strong SS-Attitude.
@@ztslovebird Merlin or King Arthur would have been my preference for Picard.
He was considered for a few roles. He was the first choice for Goliath, King Oberon and MacBeth.
Schlock Jocks glad they got David as Goliath instead. I can’t imagine ANYONE else being able to pull that character off like he did
The creators, from what I've heard, are trying to revive the series.
Please be true! Hope it's not live action (though I don't mind if it was, but they would need a LOT of money for the effects, casting, script and so forth f they do that, but hope not tho.)
Oh boy😒😒😒😒😒
As long as they get all the voice actors as they possibly can back. Especially Keith David as Goliath.
Yep yep. Everyone got it on trending because of Disney+ and it was amazing Gargoyles was trending worldwide i think for over 24 hours. It was impressive. I really think with Disney+ bringing so many people to older good shows like Gargoyles we could see it return.
They can try a trilogy of movies live-action but i really hope not, Gargoyles is that type of movie that or you make perfect or you don't make.
since Disney is right now in the middle of the "Cartoons Wars" again CN and Netflix, maybe a new Reboot animated show or maybe a Continuation Animated show, something like Gargoyles Next generation, but they need to keep dark, and i don't know if Disney can pull that, you have a reason why Gargoyles is remembered as "that one disney dark cartoon"
Aside from Darkwing Duck
This was my favorite Disney show
I wish NC sees this.
Could you do a WB month also? Heck, maybe other studios also. Love your channel!

I still love Xanatos’ ability to create these perfect schemes where he always comes out ahead, making him a Lex Luthor’s Lex Luthor. Hell, he’s even the trope namer for creating a no-lose scenario.
Xanatos was also the last name of my junior high principal, which was trippy AF.
Out of all the Disney tv shows, I would love to see this one brought back.

I used to watch this show on channel 7 after school, and now I’m watching this on Disney+, it holds up really well!
There are 2 versions of the 90s:
The "Everything Sucks" 90s with Grunge music rampant, and everything just being downer and serious
Then there's the "Everything is cool and extreme" 90s which harvests the kind of movies that Nostalgia Critic reviews and everything has to be literally cool. in the worst way possible
Gargoyles and Batman: The Animated Series was one of the only 2 good things to come out of the latter
I added this show to my watch list on Disney+.
Me too, Matt R.
Me too, Claude Kiringa.
@The Colorization Channel it’s ironic that Gargoyles aired on the same time afternoon as Batman the animated series during Gargoyles first season.
Gargoyles started airing when I was in high school, but I didn't care. I loved it.
InJeffable same i was able to catch it before the bus got me in the morning
it started airing prior to my birth, but I remember when I was really young I had seen a single episode while staying in a hotel with my grandma and so I ended up looking it up on youtube (like 2008 youtube, so there were tons of episodes of it at the time) definitely in my top 5 favorite series, it means a lot to have a single episode of a show enthrall someone like that. (I should note I was like 4 when I saw the episode and youtube didn't exist then, but it stayed in my memories for years and when I found out about youtube and was looking for cartoons to watch the memory of that episode was strong enough for me to look it up)
Hell, I was a full blown adult when I first saw it, and I still binged the first two seasons.
I was in middle school when it started and in high school when it ended. Although watching animated
cartoons is my hobby. Never outgrew it. I see animation as an art form.
I was a year old when it came out
"Who do we cast for this Gargoyles show?" "........What's the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation doing?"
Far as I know, they are all still alive. Bring 'em back for a reboot.
@@Tanyableu Demona's voice actress is DEFINITELY still alive AND she did another kind of voice role in the form of Cosma from OK KO. When you hear Cosma, you can clearly sense Marina Sirtis channeling Demona's anger through her.
On the topic of rebooting the show; considering how well Ducktales is doing, I say...MAKE IT HAPPEN. Just make sure to do the following things.
1. Get Greg Weisman to write it
2. Get the original voice cast (many of whom are still alive today) to do the main characters. True, the likes of Tim Curry and Tony Jay (the voices of Dr. Savarius and Anubis) are no longer with us, you could still get good replacements.
Corey Burton and the original voice of Kratos, Terrence C. Carson could work well with those characters.
3. Find good actors for characters they haven't used yet; like Thor, Loki, Zeus and of course, Merlin
4. Do not use ANY of the story elements from Goliath Chronicles
5. Explore other mythologies like Hinduism or Shintoism
Gargoyles is one of my all time favorite shows to this day! I'd say this and X-Men Evolution are the two best cartoons ever made!
Once I get Disney+ This will Definitely be on my Watch List
It’s free for a year if your Verizon customer like me.
Don't forget Mighty Ducks and TaleSpin too!
I remember this. At one point they revive King Arthur on the island of Avolon. Together with Goliath's daughter he fights against Macbeth and Demona who were magically controlled by... and then you had Goliath and his daughter time-traveling... Oberon and Titania... Xanatos marrying that actress who... and the butler secretly being...
There was SO MUCH going on in that show!
The show was knowed for his Shakesperian influences.
Like you said, MacBeth and Oberon & Titania.
Its funny to considere that a lot of kids back then, became later interested in Shakespear's work CAUSE of this show.
I loved gargoyles when I was a kid. This was MY Saturday morning cartoon and now thanks to the age of digital streaming, I can relive some of the nostalgia I loved 20 years ago.
I hope Disney+ funds a new season and lets Greg Wiseman do it the way he wants to do it.

Honestly, if Gargoyles came back as it's own Netflix show I'd be down for that 100%
And as a continuation from the comics. And from the animation studio behind Castlevania
I think it would he hard to be a continuation of the comics, because fewer people have seen them. I think they'd more have to adapt important parts from the comics into the show. Or at least do a long first episode where they get everyone up to speed.
I'd be all for it. America needs good animated series again last great one was still avatar
We loved this show at my school, my HIGH SCHOOL! This show had rather mature and at times complex story arcs. They did storytelling in long arcs where as most shows were 22 minutes in a bow and no surprise that fans of this show embraced anime when it crossed the pond.
The last season was definitely phoning it in and there was a whiff of trying to cash in on a toy line before the gravy train derailed, but this is a series that stands up to re-watching even as the original audience has grown up.
Adamant Forge The last season lost much of the creative force behind the first two. Greg Wiseman was only a story consultant, and they hardly used him. They pretty much ignored much of what he’d set up in “The Journey” and did their own thing. It is inferior to what came before in every way, in animation, plotting, sophistication, character arcs, everything.
@@MrCUTigerB Which never made sense to me because he's one of the shows creators.
A highly underrated, forgotten timeless classic!
It’s always funny to see how the quality in animation and art diminished as the series went along..... season 1 is beautiful to look at
Season 2 still looks pretty amazing. I can cut them some slack seeing as they made a lot more episodes of this than any of the other Disney Afternoon shows.
@@fireriffs and you still had the occasional episode with very fluid and dynamic animation as well.
The 2nd season was created in a rush, as far as I know. For this season Disney gave the creators the same amount of time as for the 1st one. And there was 52 episodes, not 13 so the quality was influenced inevitably.

Jordan Peele, director of, “Get Out” and “Us,” is interested to do a live-action, 🎞, based on the show.
My god that would be amazing.
Get Idris Elba to portray Goliath too. I'd kill to see that.
@@AoAD no. You have to keep Keith David. Just like they got Peter Cullin for Optimes in the transformers movies.
Difference being Optimus is an autobot while Goliath is a gargoyle, with a Gargoyle erring more on the human expression side of things with facial animations. Love Keith David , buuuut I was thinking in the realm of live action with both practical and cg working their magic. If it were an animated or if he were a full cg rendering, hands down Keith David.
But I think Idris Elba could pull off a great Goliath in a live action version.
At the end of the day, what Disney needs to do is use their science labs to splice Idris Elba with Keith David's voice. *hit*

With all the Trekkie actors in this show, my sister and I always joke that Gargoyles was just a long, elaborate Holodeck simulation they were all doing together.
OMG YESSSSS
That would be an awesome Easter egg for Star Trek but I don't think Disney and Paramount would cooperate
They were just playing DnD.
Really, this is the kind of thing that really must be watched to truly understand the hype - it is amazing
I screamed when this was in my recommended, I’ve been waiting for this video for years. I’m so glad Gargoyles is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
Same here! I was too obsessed with them, and still am. Heck, I've started playing Ultima online, because they have playable gargoyle race. I would like to see more people remembering this show.
I couldn't get enough of this show when I was a kid! I had everything from Gargoyle themed clothes, coloring books, the old style hand held games, even bed sheets! Sadly all that stuff faded over time, but I never stopped loving the show and if the intro music doesn't send chills up your spine, I don't know what will! :D
Wow, what coincidental timing! I just started re-watching this series last night because it's one of my favourites from that era of Disney.

I can easily admit Demona was one of my biggest childhood crushes.
But still she is a murderhobo.
Eliza maza and demona were my crush too.
This is my favorite Disney show of all time. None of the others can beat the story and the character development that went into this. I watched it again a couple of years ago and enjoyed it just as much, maybe even more so, as when I was a kid watching it in the 90s. There's so much mythology and Shakespearean lore woven into it so skillfully, and every character is so fleshed out. I will always recommend this show to anyone that hasn't seen it, and I hope Disney can make another awesome series like it in the future.
This came out when I was 9. This and batman was my obsession. I would really be cool with a reboot of this. Disney has been doing really well with their shows lately.
From the bottom of my heart, thanks for defending season 3.

Same. Literally all I remember of season 3 is the episode where the clones were dying
It was moved to ABC as a Saturday morning cartoon under different writers and broadcast standards(aimed at younger kids). Goliath Chronicles wasn't horrible but it wasn't as good and memorable as the first 2 seasons shown on weekday afternoons.
It's funny how season 3 really is okay for a cartoon show, but because it's from a series with a phenomenal 1st and 2nd season, it's considered pretty bad.

Oml I miss vhs lol
I just did a rewatch of seasons 1 and 2, and the show really does hold up. I’d also add that the budding relationship between Goliath and Elisa is done beautifully. Gargoyles and Batman: TAS were and remain two of my favorite shows. And with Gargoyles… where else are you going to hear Michael Dorn and Keith David together? It’s glorious!
So glad you went into more detail of Gargoyles. This was a huge favorite of mine when I was a kid and recently rewatched the first two seasons and they for sure hold up.
This was my favorite show as a child. Even to the point that my mother let me name my baby sister Alisa after the detective. ( Also, I was six and didn't realize the character is spelled Elisa.)
First two seasons, amazing, the gold standard of what a show for kids and adults can be. I love the use of shakespeare, mythology, and drama.
Favorite episodes: the one with Puck, Fox turning into the monster, and the ones about Macbeth and Demona's past. Macbeth is a prime example of how you write I think, a great anti-hero. I mean you look at the episode King Arthur comes to New York to find excalibur and after fighting Macbeth, Arthur still treats him as the noble king he once was.
Funny, I was literally thinking about this show and wrote a note reminded myself towatch it again and then doug uploads this a few seconds after .

Fun tidbit: Greg Weisman, the creator of Gargoyles, actually has a continuation of the series in comic form. It gets even more deep and dark, but you need to keep in mind that all of the tv episodes after S3E1 are not canon.
This was one of the many things that made the 90s cool. Could easily fit in this day and age, too.
Gargoyles was my show when I was a kid. I stayed up to watch it late at night because I wasn't able to when it was on earlier in the day. It was so good. Seeing Gargoyles and Darkwing Duck on Disney Plus just took me back to my early childhood like nothing has before.
Just announce Gargoyles live action on Disney+
But really I love this show and I've started to rewatch it.
Those trumpets in the intro is absolutely perfect.
Hell yes. This was the absolute best show in the 90s. Got all my nieces and nephews watching it now.
I didn't even know there WAS a 3rd season, but if it was after moving to another network then that could explain why I just didn't know at the time.
This will forever be a top tier cartoon
Greg Weisman who worked on this show went on to develop Young Justice, a really awesome show that focuses on the DC comics sidekicks, years later on. Surprisingly, Weisman was able to get a lot of the voice actors from Gargoyles to come back and voice a few awesome characters, especially the villains, in Young Justice. My favorites include Keith David (Goliath in Gargoyles) returning as Mongul; Thom Adcox (Lexington in Gargoyles) returning as Klarion; and Marina Sirtis (Demona in Gargoyles) as Queen Bee.
Sadly, there is nothing more I can add. Gargoyles is great. If you haven't seen it. Watch it. If you have enjoy watching it again.
One of my favorite scenes was in Gathering Part 4. Goliath turns to stone and Elisa has to take on a team of mercs to protect him. The whole scene was intense and afterward you know Elisa is a perfect match for Goliath and crew. She can throw down with the best of them. She's no April O'Neill, she'll bust you up.
Rahsaan Footman I love that scene too (its actually “Awakening” part 4, if you’re describing the scene I think you are). Very tense and well animated by Walt Disney Japan animation studios.
Disney's most epic cartoon yet .
My brother was Rob's same age when the show came on and he didn't deny watching it. He liked intelligent shows, hell, he even watched the Gummi Bears and said it was more intelligent than many cartoons on at that time. He watched Gargoyles more than I did and he followed the storylines as they appeared, just as you mentioned. I watched some, but he certainly told me about the episodes I didn't see. He was the first to notice that there were a lot of Trek stars (even Colm Meany and Kate Mulgrew) on the show. And, he agreed that they used those talents in an intelligent way. Even tho, he was a teenager and didn't care for the kind of thing, he still liked how well they had Goliath and Elisa dance around each other. He liked how Odin and Puck were the same person, but you didn't know that until later. Even the fact that MacBeth was a real person. Not forgeting character interaction between Demona and Angela. The fact that Goliath still sorta cared for Demona, but has no choice but to be the protagonist to her antagonist (while still having budding feelings for Elisa). And how Angela is in the middle of that, later.
Anyway, if by the third season, you mean the Goliath Chronicles, I didn't watch it because the story had already started getting complicated with the stories of the past, like the appearance of MacBeth, the existence of Avalon, and such. But, my brother was going to continue to watch it since he was already a big fan. Until he saw that it had changed completely - and got worse because of it. In the previous season finale, Elisa had kissed Goliath as he was turning to stone, causing him to freeze in a surprised pose. It was an awesome ending to the season making you want to see the season premiere. For somebody he who had (and still has) no interest in romance and relationships, even he was disappointed by that the fact that It Was Never Mentioned, Again. Even I thought that didn't make sense. He said somebody else took over the show and changed it to their way. Anyway, after a few episodes my brother stopped watching it because of the changes. But, he to this day, he still says that Gargoyles was an excellent addition to Disney Afternoon and that he was glad to watch it every week (I think it was only on Fridays). Then he gladly told us all about it afterward - if he didn't manage to get me to watch it with him. If he did, he would update me on anything I missed before the episode was over. We do love to talk, after all!
I really need to watch this show. I missed it when it came out and never came around to watching it since.
The plot of the show reminds me a lot like Highlander.

I agree with you Doug Walker because people made fun of other people when they found out those people playing video games, reading comic books and watching cartoons, but now it’s completely normal ever since I started cosplaying at 0:30.
I loved the show. It aired when I was an early teenager, just the right time to watch it. Watching this video, I realize that the animation and the art style have aged really well.
As much as new seasons would be awesome, season 3, and all the recent remakes of 90's stuff make me think that it is best to leave this show in Nostlagia Land.

I keep hearing about this show from time-to-time, I was born on 2000 so I couldn't of experienced what was great in the 90s, all I know it was over the top. But this show was pretty vague, until I decided to watch it and I got hooked, and I'm still watching it.

I just watched all three seasons because I never got to finish it as a child. And oh my god I loved it, will always stand as one if my favorite childhood shows, I kind of hope they get a movie or something in the future
This came out 2 years before I graduated high school and I loved it.
Same. Just when I had started to move on from afternoon/Saturday morning cartoons, along came this classic gem. I thought I was getting "too old" for Saturday morning cartoons but I discovered this show and Exo-Squad (and Anime films being released on VHS, like Akira) and that carried me through the middle of the 90's.
There are times where I think Gargoyles needs more coverage and recognition, something that I think Disney+ will bring. I know that space is limited, but it'd be exciting to see a Gargoyles based world in Kingdom Hearts.
Favorite show. Of all times.
I really used to enjoy this. I’ll have to rewatch it.

Wolfwalkers is still first but I think this is either second or third to the best animated films of 2020, see you all next year.
As soon as I got Disney+ I watched Gargoyles. Absolute favourite.
Amazed by the Star Trek connection. Also, putting an ancient castle on top of a skyscraper violates a butt-ton of zoning regulations.
a classic must watch for all lovers of animation
I’ve fallen in love with this series and I have been binge watching it on Disney plus UGHHH such a slept on
Of all the Disney shows that could be remade, THIS is the one I want the most. I got D+ almost specifically for Gargoyles. Everything else is just a bonus.
Ive seen this show at least twice in my years. I need to again
I never watched Gargoyles growing up. So it was the first thing I watched when I got Disney+. LOVED IT
I watched it back then, then got Disney+ after and started BINGE WATCHING!
When I was a young kid, I didn't cared for this show, but before my teen years, I managed to see a re-run on TV. And I was like, "Wow, this show isn't actually too bad."
Loved the Gargoyles
Gargoyles was my shit when I was younger, hell I still go back and watch it every now and then
absolutely loved it as a kid and as an adult
