This is a TAS of Dig Dug played on the GBA game "Namco Museum - 50th Anniversary". I don't know why it does this, but the sprites alternate between two similar images rapidly.
well this is a TAS but using rocks is also the proper way to play the game at high levels. in addition to vegetable spawns being directly tied to them (a vegetable is guaranteed to spawn after the second rock is dropped in a round), it's just the most efficient way to clear the enemies and score points
@@matthewbertrand4139 Also, after about level 28 the game gets insane, where they instantly start phasing through the dirt towards you, and when they start SPEEDING UP, at that point, you wanna clear as many of them out as quickly as possible
I bet with libtas someone could get TAS' of arcade games running. Imagine a TAS of some shooter like Terminator, just instantly destroying every enemy as soon as they show up lmao
i once owned the demo for a ps3 game that was essentially just a rip of this with 3d graphics. took me this long to realize. this is the first dig dug gameplay i've ever seen. i'm questioning a lot of things right now
@@NeutralOfficial they had DK, I'm not entirely sure which space game you're refering too, but they had a seperate arcade machine that had a dinosaur fighting game on it.
Looks like the TASer was setting up a pentakill at the end, but didn't pull it off. In a regular speedrun, I'd understand, but I don't see why you'd let it fail like this in a TAS.
Would have been cool, but I don’t think they were trying for the maximum efficiency and was content how the TAS turned out. I don’t know how much work it takes, but I bet it takes a good handful of hours for a short speedrun like this
My favorite Namco arcade title. Also, these are my favorite kinds of TAS. Glitches are funny, but it’s so much more satisfying for me to watch a game be played at a fair pro level.
The GBA only has 1 channel dedicated to playing wavetables (out of the 6 it has), so they had to use the 2 pulse wave channels to get any other sounds playing at once. They could've fixed this issue by emulating the NAMCO WSG in software, but I bet there wasn't really enough CPU time on the GBA to do it.
@@TheBeeshSpweesh I figured that might've been the case. I was confused since the GBA's two DACs have done so much more before than 1 sample at a time, and it wouldn't make sense for a simplistic game like Dig-Dug to eat at its memory.
@@TheRealHedgehogSonic I'm not sure if this is an emulation or a straight port. I assume its the former, so using the hardware PSG was certainly beneficial.
This is fantastic, used to play it on the PS2 Namco Museum with my mom when i was little...but you ever think about how fucked up the concept of this game is?
You can pump an enemy to death WAY faster by moving after hitting them. You basically cancel the initial attack and immediately do another one. This also (sorta) let's you kill an enemy while moving.
When you walk it goes deedeedeededede deedeedeededede dededededededee deee deedeedeededede deedeedeededede dededededededee deee When you don't walk it goes ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
? There's dirt around the stage, your guy can dig through the dirt but he takes a speed penalty. The enemies can't dig through dirt but they can enter a "ghost" mode where they phase through the dirt. The goal of each level to kill all the enemies. Normally you do this by sending out a projectile that prevents both you and the enemy from moving. You finish off the enemies by then bashing the action button causing them to explode. All the pick ups are just for points.
the original gba was zoomed in and scrolling. so to fit the resolution to best possible, they have property interlaced the graphics. Remember GBA has a slow screen, so you wont would see that flicker on the original. Some games take a uses of that. Im havent tested the game, but interlacing looks awfull on emulators today.
Love how the music starts when you walk, and then it just stops immediately when YOU stop. Always thought that was hilarious as a fetus

all you need is MAME
I don't remember the gameboy version of this game's music being so raw ngl
there was 2 namco collections with this game, one with ms pacman and this one, the other one had better music
*on gba
the flickery sprites are because the GBA had a smaller screen resolution, so they had to do that in order to sort of squish it down
no
Namco Museum DS does the same thing

was it about a drill or something? i think i actually played it once and deleted it instantly lol
If you're talking about Mr Driller, both are made by the same company (Namco)
dig dug arrangement is the game, I think it was part of the namco museum collection, hope that rings a few bells for ya
@Marco Zepeda My mistake. I meant to say Mr Driller
this soundtrack goes hard
Used to play this game on a retro arcade machine at my dentist.
holy shit, i used to play dig dug at my dentist too! though it wasnt an arcade machine, they just had like 4 gamecubes with namco museum set up

Tbh I love the awkward silence mixed with the enemies moving when the music abruptly stops. It still makes me laugh.
I remember this on the Nintendo 64.
Good times. Though, I thought there were many more stages in Dig Dug?
This is the gba version lol
I loved playing this game back when I was a kid.
Always found it odd how the music keeps playing when you kill an enemy but the sound effect for killing takes over some parts of the song.
hardware limitations. same thing with super Mario on the NES, when collecting coins and jumping and stuff certain music sounds don't play

I had no idea this was on GBA 😳
There was a namco arcade thing that had this, Galaga, Galaxia, I think Pacman, and a few others
