  • Moving pastured meat birds to fresh grass daily is essential, however, the move can be challenging if the chicken tractor isn’t constructed with movement in mind!
We built this tractor 9 years ago and it’s still working great! 💪🏼
We love our Salatin chicken tractor design because it’s lightweight (easy to move), yet sturdy 💫 (won’t blow away and is safe from predators). It’s a delicate balance!
We used fiberglass corrugated paneling for the partial walls and roof, and treated 2x2’s for the structure. Strong but light!
The wheels on the back create a pivot point and a strap in front allows me to lift and pull. I’ve seen people use a dolly as well, but this is simple and works well for me.
It takes a week or so for the chicks to get used to it, but after a few moves they figure out that fresh greens are coming and they pretty much run to it 🌱.
The no-dig skirts are a feature we added a couple of years ago after a sneaky fox dug underneath the tractor and took ALL 23 of our chicks. Such a sad day😭! Since adding the skirts, we’ve had zero issues.
Raising pastured meat birds is SUCH an awesome opportunity to become more self-sufficient, and take control your food source (no mystery meat over here! 🙅🏻‍♀️).
Plus, they take very little time! I only spend 10 minutes a day moving the chicken tractor and topping off their feed/water. Who doesn’t have 10 minutes?!
If raising meat chickens seems a bit overwhelming, comment “homegrown” and I’ll send more information your way! I’d love to help you!
