I live in Western New York state about 55 miles east of Buffalo, 15 miles from Lake Ontario, our weather is much like yours. I've found that if you use a black, fabric on the garden especially for peppers and tomatoes, it keeps the roots warm and protected allowing you to get larger produce and plants. Make sure that you put compost on your garden in the fall, then in the spring till it in before you lay the black fabric down again
The first year I grew Amish paste they were an instant favorite for flavor and meatyness and I just have not been able to grow them the same since. Horrible mess every year. You’ve officially convinced me to switch to determinate next season! Especially since I have limited space.
Growing Bell Peppers in food-grade 5-gallon drilled drain pails (Menards) worked very well for me this year. Planted January indoors produced spring, summer, and now fall. NW Wisconsin. I controlled the soil temperature at 60f. Bring them indoors when it is below 50f outdoor temperature.
I live in Alaska, zone 4b, and i found your channel a couple weeks ago while searching for other zone 4 gardeners to follow and I love your videos! I'm going to plant garlic for the first time this year, and I marathoned all your garlic videos to learn everything I can! Thank you so much for making these fantastic videos! ❤
I'm new to your site. We live in northern Colorado and our garden was finished a month ago. I love all that you have grown and how much you harvested! Where do you buy your garden seeds? I haven't heard of some of the peppers you raised. Will continue to follow you!
You are doing quite well adapting to a cooler zone than you had. I’m up to my neck in peppers this year WI, Z5a. The one pepper that I’m trying a second time is Tabasco. They are here, but tiny and taking Forever Again to ripen. I cleared the freezer and found out that we don’t need so much 😅 and will probably cut back, but the chickens are happy. We don’t have a basement either and we created an above ground root cellar last year. It worked pretty good with our warm winter. Couple issues were the temp transmitter had intermittent connection because of metal on the refrigerator building panels and we only had one vent and the humidity was high. Not sure if it can retain above freezing temp if I added a second vent. Mainly I need to store potatoes and onions. It’s been so hot the last two weeks and signs of maybe gopher damage so couldn’t store them in ground because of the weather so it’s a spare room for now. I would definitely hill them as even in our sandy soil they pop up. I do let the carrots grow on and dig in the winter for the most part. And the Trionfo Violetto pole beans and green stringless bush have wore me out picking them😂. I had to let them go as I was like the gardener with zucchini 😂😂 I use cattle panels for tomatoes because they get so tall, but may rethink the varieties that are shorter. I’m still getting use to determinates and a cage with stake would be easy and I think for better healthier plants. I remember leaving the plants sprawl and seems the plants were healthier and no sunburn. Determinate tomatoes could make short work for preserving. Thanks for letting us know what varieties you found great and will make note of them. Nothing worse than finding out a new variety doesn’t work. My suggestion for a cauliflower to try is Fujiyama and it’s only 45 days. I grew in low tunnel starting 4/15 and they were great! 😂I forgot it was only 45 days and raced out to harvest. Trying for fall, but the weather is throwing things off. Had something chewing on them while netted and suspect slugs. Many survived and used shade fabric. Frodo bell peppers from Johnnys was also Great-large . 😂😂😂OMG, my husband just said MN Gophers attacked your potatoes 😂😂😂 Another funny thing-we got a used wood chipper and then we were blessed with mountains of woodchips from arborists😂. We use them in between 3’ wide beds that I shore up with reclaimed boards to keep chips in place.
It is highly important to use organic straw as we had farmers in our local area use straw purchased from Lowes, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply and their crops failed due to chemicals that were used on the straw. There's lots of good information about the chemicals used on straw as well as great resources to finding true organic (not treated with chemicals) straw online. Just have to do your homework for your local area and talk to your local straw providers.
I feel you on the bittersweet end of the season. Your garden looks amazing despite the challenges! That huge cabbage is a county fair winner for sure! 🏅🥬
That's too bad the Amish Paste Tomatoes did not workout for you. I'm in SW Minnesota and they do well for me. That's my tomato of choice for sauces. Thank you for showing your scotch bonnet peppers. I'm going to try them next year. 😊
Thanks for sharing a bit of personal information through your sponsor! 🙂Know that your videos bring a smile and make others happy. Look forward to many more videos from you as you enspire us. Just saying.
Plum Regal is a determinate tomato (as you know)...its expected the foliage won't look greatest at this point of the year. Corn Is a heavy Nitrogen feeder...definitely feed a few times during the season...10-10-10 is all you need, and pellets are easy to spread by hand within your companion planted garden space. Brussel sprouts are also heavy Nitrogen feeders...that is the trick. Had the same issue for years and nearly gave up
Have you ever tried suncherry tomatoes? They work great as a sugar substitute in sauces that I make ( I liquify them in a food processor) they grow great in Minnesota in every part of the season and are a beautiful plant on their own.
Zone 4 in WI here. I’m hoping to get at least one chocolate stripe tomato 😂 My garden ducks broke it off so it’s late! Otherwise my Amish Paste didn’t get any blight until recently
Hi. I'm new to your channel and haven't been able to watch many of your videos yet so I may be telling you something you already know. Be careful about believing soil tests. Most places use too strong of an acid, plants use carbon dioxide(a weak acid). The test shows what's in the soil but not necessarily what's available to the plants. I'm not sure about all clay soils but the one I have chemically locks up the phosphorus so mixing it the soil doesn't work well. Put a handful of rock phosphate or bone meal in the hole and plant directly on top of it. I'm in Texas zone 9b.
I love the garden tour! Don’t ever stop! 🙋♀️I have a question about your Brussels sprouts: will you still be able to harvest those little ones? Or is it a loss? Mine are tiny too and I have the purple stems too
I'm gonna try the plum regal next year. I had blight on my tomatoes, peppers and even green beans! I didn't know that was even possible! I might also try the cherry tomato you're growing. My red cherry tomato splits like crazy. I'm growing chocolate cherry and purple bumblebee and they have done fantastic! No splitting and very productive. They are a bit bigger than a typical cherry. We used electric net fencing this year and I was so worried the deer would jump it but they haven't.
Me too! My Romas are going to be picked blush and I’m trying plum regal next year. Wow. Your garden is still lush! Mine too! I think all of the rain helped. Soil never dried out. Thanks for showing us that we can grow in our northern climate. I’m making a hoop house for my pepper garden next year.
How do you manage pests? I have weeds and pests sooooo bad. They ruined my carrots, brassicas, squash, and more. I don't want to use chemicals but don't have time to keep up with all the weeds and hand pick pests so I need some tips! I have mulched but must be full of weed seeds or not thick enough.

I'm also in Minnesota zone 4B . (southwest) what a season we had. I'm still harvesting tomatoes and peppers like crazy.

Once tomatoes start turning you can let them ripe on your counter and let the plant focus on the left green tomatoes. 😊
You might consider waiting until spring to fertilize because the soil will use the most of the nutrients while nothing is growing in it.

That is awesome!!! I’m so glad you found me 🫶🏼
If you're expecting frost pick all of your tomatoes and bring inside, place a couple apples in with them, cover with a sheet, they'll ripen nicely
Really enjoying your channel! Greetings from WI!
Hi mad city! I’m in Wisconsin too! Northwoods
Hi there!!!!

Good morning from Forest Lake! Great episode! I see you and Ryan got the solar panels up on the shop! Hope there's an episode in the future 😊
Good eyes and YES! Coming soon! Waiting on a replacement part and then we can turn it on :)
It is my first time on your channel and I have just subscribed. Thank you so much for sharing. Keep up the good work. All the best on this journey😊🙏
Awesome! Thank you!
The leaves of the celery freeze dry and grind it up for celery salt or powder.

I haven’t, but they sound great!
@@thehomesteadingrd Bright orange sugar bombs when you bite into them. Really hope you give them a try.
Fantastic tour!! Thank you ❤️😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
Look pretty good Garden maybe Fertilize mid grown Season. You need to pull that cabin's pretty quick because if it rains on it. It will split
What about planting dried beans with your corn to add nitrogen? Classic 3 sisters.
Wow !!! I want to do that too
Join me! 👏🏼👏🏼
I really like your pepper/mulch experiment. I'd love to see your kitties sometime. 🐈 🐈⬛️
I’d love to see them too! 😂 They are busy hunting all night so they hide and sleep all day. We’ll see them more this winter

Curious about the timing of planting the corn and squash, I have had difficulty planting the 3 sisters. The only thing that thrives is the corn.
Try soaking an H-19 cuc in ice water they get super crisp! I do that before I make refrigerator dills 🎉
Oooo that’s a great idea!
Beautiful video ❤❤❤ 🕊️

Yep! I’ll still harvest them, they are edible but we just won’t be able to get as many meals out of them that’s for sure

What variety of corn do you grow, and when do you plant it. I live in South East Alaska and think we have similar growing conditions. Thanks.
I am watching from Africa

Are you able to try ducks? They are messy and naughty but so fun and I had no squash vine borers and barely any aphids
I do have ducks and chickens but they don't really get in the garden because of a fence between their usual free range area and my garden.
Where’d you get your broadfork, and do you like it? I’d like to get one.
