The Homesteading RD
США
Добавлен 9 май 2022
We started homesteading in 2013 on 5 acres, but now we're starting our NEW homestead from scratch in the north woods of Minnesota on 240 acres. We're currently living in a 960 sq foot hunting cabin and are doing our best to live off our land - gardening, raising chickens, hunting, and foraging. We'll build our forever home, someday! We'll see :) Come along for the journey and learn some self-sufficiency tips along the way!

I used to be “normal.” I checked all these boxes and convinced myself that things were fine because these things were well, “normal.” 😣My anxiety was out of control. 😣I was dependent on caffeine during the day and sleeping pills at night. 😣My gut was a wreck. 😣I had night sweats. 😣I was agitated to my core. It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom that I finally decided that “normal” wasn’t working fo...

🫤That’s a part of my past that I don’t like to talk about much... But it’s a BIG part of my story and who I am today. I was a conventionally-trained dietitian who worked in large metro hospitals for 11 years. I enjoyed the fast-paced setting and working as a care team, but a major shift happened along the way. We started homesteading in 2013 and found a passion for self-sufficiency. Over the ye...

I used to work as a dietitian in large, metro hospitals ⬇️ …and this is a part of my story that I don’t talk about very often. I had a few nutritional interventions to offer my patients, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t much compared to the damage already done by our modern lifestyles and countless pharmaceuticals being pumped in. The final straw was when I was faced with my own health comp...

How I Move Our Meat Chicken Tractor Daily
Просмотров 517Месяц назад
Moving pastured meat birds to fresh grass daily is essential, however, the move can be challenging if the chicken tractor isn’t constructed with movement in mind! We built this tractor 9 years ago and it’s still working great! 💪🏼 We love our Salatin chicken tractor design because it’s lightweight (easy to move), yet sturdy 💫 (won’t blow away and is safe from predators). It’s a delicate balance!...
My mother told me that years ago granny boiled an egg for my grandad, he cracked it open and there was a chick in it 😭😭
Funny story. My sister in law was over and i gave her some eggs, dont know what way the conversation went but she asked will i get any chicks. I said no as i dont have a rooster. She asked "oh do you need a rooster"? I burst out laughing and said well does a woman need a man to have a baby 😂 oh how we laughed
Hey, someone closer to my zone in Northern WI. I am fighting with all the gardening this year. It's been a sloooow start. Last year, I was so much farther ahead. It has been nice not to have to water so much this year with all the rain, but the flooding and standing water is not helping with mosquitos. So much bug spay ans layers of cloths to try and ward them off.
Awesome tour!!!
did it work??
Bug free.
Great video. Thanks for all the tips. I have a question about the red rangers. I was advised to get Cornish cross meat chickens because they taste better than the red rangers. Have you noticed a big difference in taste?? I would like to get away from the Cornish cross.
Oh gosh - I couldn’t disagree with that more!! The rangers have far superior taste, texture, color and nutrition compared to the bland and lifeless Cornish cross. Definitely give them a try and enjoy chicken that actually tastes like chicken! 🫶🏼
@@thehomesteadingrd thanks for the response. I did get 3 red rangers this year to try out. Frankly the Cornish cross creep me out because of how fast they grow.
@@TheEssentialRanchersLife Totally agree - they freak me out, too. I've never raised them and don't plan to.
The purple peppers are so fun! That variety grows very well too!
Yay!! Can’t wait to try them!!

Hi
Where does anyone get grape or oak leaves?? I use bay leaves
Idk what I did wrong with this recipe… I followed all the directions. After four days in the cupboard I placed in the fridge. 24 hours later I tried tasting them and they were mushy and terribly salty.
💚👍lookin good!!
Thank you!!!!
Do you think it would be more advantageous to keep your garden, covered in a large greenhouse?
Every carnivore likes to eat chickens: foxes, coyotes , raccoons, wolves, bobcats and on and on!
The portable coop is great!
Thank you!
Yay! Garden looks great! Fellow Minnesotan here!! So glad i found your channel, helps me keep healthy expectations ( and hope) for my garden. Keep it coming, love the content..
Hey there neighbor!! I’m glad you found me 🫶🏼
Great job!
Thank you for sharing ❤
Hi, do you use the automatic sunrise/sunset setting on your ChickCozy opener or do you use the timer? I’m having trouble with automatic opening with a covered run, not enough light for the sensor. Thanks!
Great question! I don’t use the light sensor because, I agree, there’s not enough light because of the covered run. I use the manual time setting and just adjust it monthly based on daylight hours
@@thehomesteadingrd thank you very much! I will try setting the time manually.
Minnesota 4B here! I’m having nearly the same struggles and successes :) glad to know I’m not alone. Thank you for your videos! Keep them coming ❤
Hang in there!! ❤️❤️
Love your video 🥰... thanks for sharing! New subbie here 😊
Yay! Welcome 🫶🏼!
I have 3 roosters that are just over 7 weeks old. Do I have to introduce them to the rest of my flock (1 roo and 7 hens) at night? Or can I put them together this afternoon so I can watch them? I also have an additional 7 chicks that are 3.5 weeks old. Should I wait a couple of weeks to throw them in with the rest? Currently everyone is outside in separate coops/runs but all can see each other. Thanks for a great video!
I’ve done it both ways, but I feel like dusk is best. that way you can supervise for 30 min or so and then everyone goes to bed. Then, run back out at sunrise. I would wait on the 3.5 week olds. Good luck!
I’m just curious what your reasoning is to prune the lower suckers. Will they not produce fruit? I usually plant indeterminate tomatoes and I planted a bunch of romas this year so I’m just trying to figure it out 😊
Good morning from Forest lake Minnesota! Great episode Katie!!
Good morning!! Thank you!!
If I do chicken soup does it still count as a bone broth ?
You could have maybe moved the few new breed buff layer chicks in with one of the broody hens to have them raise them up the rest of the way. Just a thought, always love seeing chicks with a mama teaching them!
That would have worked when they were a day old, but they were 2-3 weeks old here so the broody hens wouldn’t have taken them 😕. If these hens were broody 2-3 weeks ago, I absolutely would have done it!
We just purchased the predator deterrent eyes! So far so good!
Hooray!! They are awesome!!
Thanks for the reminder. I keep forgetting to pull out my mesh. Those black flies take chunks and leave welts! 🙄
They are awful this year!!
Great video!!! Question....if you have more than 1 hen hatch chicks, do you keep them together? I had a hen hatch 2 chicks. 3 weeks later, another hen hatched 3 chicks. The 1st hen & 2 chicks are now with the rest of the flock. But when I try to let the last hen with her 3 chicks out with the flock, the 1st momma goes after and pecks on the 2nd momma. I don't know why?! They are in the same run, separated by an enclosure, so they always see each other.. I'd like to slowly get them all together, but maybe it's still too soon. The 1st chicks are 5 weeks old and the 2nd ones are 2 weeks old. Hopefully they all get use to each other eventually. So much easier when they all live together!
The mamas can be pretty protective of their chicks. I’ve been able to keep them together, but only if there’s plenty of space and each mama has her own dedicated feeder and waterer. They definitely keep to their own “area.”
Great video I learned something every time I watch you.
Glad to hear it! ☺️
Thanks for this! Are you worried about condensation from the metal roof in the winter?
It hasn’t been an issue! We had the same roof at the poultry palace too
Total newbie question, but do you need roosters for chickens to produce eggs? We want eggs, but hate being woken up by rooster throughout the night, lol.
Great question! Nope, a hen will lay eggs without a rooster. The only difference is the eggs won’t be fertilized, so you won’t be able to hatch chicks from them.
@@thehomesteadingrd Ah, I see. So, food, but no future generations. Got it. Thanks!
So beautiful. God’s creation is beautiful
❤️❤️❤️
Northeast Minnesotan here, glad I found another gardener to 'compare notes' with. Garden is looking good!

Gardens are looking awesome, especially with the weather we have been having this year!

What a beautiful garden!
Thank you so much!!
Before i clicked on this video, i have seen like a survey from youtube asking me what i think about it. I clicked on the informative and useful spots.
That's great, my friend. New subscriber for you ♥️
A great companion/cover crop for your tomatoes is radish. They love the cool shade under the maters. Re-seed as you harvest.
I didn't know this...I'm going to try this 🙂
Hi neighbour! 👋 I'm just across the boarder in Ontario. Nice to find a channel that's relatable with my zone 3b.
