Garry, remote travel is not a place to be r& d on new suspension unless of course you have skin in the game and plenty of time. I’d be building an off road trailer with leafs! Yours game man wanting to do the gunbarrel in Sept taking into account the sudden temp increase …. Better choice to head south and onto the coast I feel! If you do head west there is a track that runs parallel to the Nullarbor along the coast - awesome track and more fun and interesting than bitumen !
Thanks for you comment Tony and for watching our channel 😀 We got rid of the leafs because corrugations break leafs springs, centre bolts and Ubolts. The R&D can't be done in the factory. As we said on the video we were planning to do the Gunbarrel in August but were held up in Alice Springs for almost 3 weeks waiting for replacement parts for the trailer. We then broke the tail shaft in Palm Valley so we lost our 4x4 capability and the window of opportunity to head west because of the heat. We are now heading south!👍
So sorry to hear of your misfortune today as usual Garry is managing the situation like an general, I wish you both well and will send good energy to your MAN + trailer to continue with a safe and comfortable journey. 😃
Quite an unpleasant surprise, costly as well with tyres scrubbing out. Fortunately you were able to do repairs in the safety and comfort of a modern day roadhouse place. I have vivid memories and some pictures of repairs being done in the late sixties and seventies at Marla Bore. We usually camped about 500m away from the bore, so stock could access the water unhindered by us. Interesting, but not abnormal for a German manufacturer to replace the front propellor shaft completely. I assume they firstly would like to assess the what and why, and secondly, with such a long propellor shaft, balance may be an issue if it isn't spot on. Wet sand has a habit of destroying universal joints, mud to a lesser extent does the same. I think your assessment of the proximity of the exhaust could well be a factor; a heat shield coming up?
Thanks for your comments and sharing your experiences Allan. Marla Bore in the 60's and 70's would have been quite an experience. Re the shaft, a heat shield or move the exhaust is definitely a possibility!
I dunno but it seems to me that the suspension on that “prototype” trailer is a dead loss if the wheels are constantly “out of alignment” and scrubbing that badly that tyres are destroyed in short distances. Maybe go back to something more “tried & true”. Bad luck with uni joint & prop shaft as well. A new uni joint could have come air mail in an envelope overnight, but a new prop shaft will take weeks most likely. Couldn’t they have posted you a new uni joint to fit locally to get you down to Adelaide & while the replacement new prop shaft was being freighted? 🤷♂️ Just seems to me like you have a lot of $ invested in expensive equipment that continually fails.
Appreciate your comments 😀 I suppose the key word here is prototype. We're testing the torsion bars for the manufacturer with a view to getting an enclosed trailer so we can tow our 4x4. I'm a sucker for punishment! A few problems are showing up which is the whole idea of a prototype unfortunately 😩 Re the uni joint and prop shaft. If it wasn't under warranty I'd most definitely have done what you suggested!!
35K It's a premature failure which I believe is due to the position of the exhaust from where it exits ie straight onto the universal joint which failed.
@@teamd-tour That's good to know, but bad luck for you, good that MAN/Penske have covered the warranty on this occasion. Done 50k+ and the exhaust is in the same area as you describe, so will keep an eye on the rear universal joint.
Garry, I realise the trailer affords you more flexibility to carry 'stuff' that you can't carry in the truck, but is it really worth it? This has been my argument for some time - too many vehicles towing caravans = too many axles and wheels that fail at the wrong time and place.
Thanks for your comment. We try to avoid click bait and are very mindful of that. I guess you 'really needed' to see it to believe the hassles and frustrations we're having with the trailer 😩 That was our thinking behind the title.
@@teamd-tour fair enough, no nasty stuff intended, as I mentioned good job there are a lot of vanners out there who couldn't change a tyre, you are definitely NOT one of those, cheers and happy travels 👍
Normally would agree but the torsion bars are prototypes. We're testing them for the manufacturer. A few adjustments will definitely need to be made!!! 😂
@teamd-tour I'm well aware that it is a prototype but something as basic as wheel alignment should have been checked. I assume that it was built in a jig so alignment should be guaranteed unless the supporting structures are out of alignment.
@@garypriddin9949 Yes, it was built in a jig but welding components like this can move once released from the jig. It only takes a very small deflection to make a great difference once the wheels are on. Some of the upgrades from this will be to make future units adjustable for wheel alignment. Thanks for your comment!
Great little caravan park. Great spot Alice Springs. Interesting times ahead.
Yes it was!
Not an adventure with out some drama ..safe travels
Yes, you're right!! hahahah.

@teamd-tour asked a question about leafs in another video. Answered.
Any options for coils with trailing arms?

Thanks, we could do with some 'good energy' 😀😀

Garry on the front tail shaft universal joint failure, be interested to know how many km on your MAN?
35K It's a premature failure which I believe is due to the position of the exhaust from where it exits ie straight onto the universal joint which failed.

To many vehicles towing caravans, what else do you use, a horse
Heather would definitely agree with you there, Peter! But I love my toys 😀 And they give us more flexibility on our travels

You would think quality control would have picked up the issue before it was shipped to you. Very poor on the companies behalf.
