This is the best cosplay armor tutorial I've ever seen! It's exactly what I need, but I'm afraid it's too difficult for me to make it,but...Let's give it a try! Thank you for such amazing tutorial!
This guy is awesome...I watched this very vid and started with a chest plate...it was for my 7 yr old son...I studied this video along with the other parts...worked well and I'm humble...thanks a million Mr. Smith
Really great Tutorial Ted, it's great to see an In-depth look at how to create some really realistic looking armor from EVA foam. And I also loved your platform boots tutorial, that's something I've never seen before. Hope to see more
Dear Evil Ted. Thank's SO MUCH for making these AWESOME videos and tutorials!! I'm and old costume maker from a few decades ago, who had a very small business, making mostly Halloween costumes for people (at ridiculously low prices). I'm kind of embarrassed when I think about the materials I used to use: Real hammered copper, bronze, and steel parts. Huge hides of thick leather, animal fur, leather straps, buckles, grommets, laces and real animal horns. I made Viking / Barbarian/ Roman/ Greek/ Medieval armor that you could "probably" actually wear into battle! I never went to a comicon or cosplay type event, but I bet we wouldn't even be allowed inside with the kind of stuff I made! How I wish I knew about the wondrous applications for FOAM when it comes to making cool costume armor! Your videos, along with those of other "Makers" , have inspired me to get back into making some costumes again, for me and one friend (so far)! His niece is getting married and she loves costuming and make up and Halloween so much, she planned her wedding to be a COSTUME BALL/ WEDDING!! How much fun does THAT sound like?? She specifically ASKED for us to make something cool, just like the stuff we made when she was just a little kid, and was actually inspired by our costumes! I cannot possibly let her down on her Wedding Day so I'm pulling out all the stops (as they say) to make something GORGEOUS! We're dressing up as Guardians from the video game Destiny! The Bride's husband to be, is a big fan of that game! Thanks again for ALL your tutorials and helpful hints, when working with this unbelievably versatile material! If I had one (and ONLY one) critique, about ANYTHING concerning your videos, it would be THE 45 DEGREE ANGLES! The angles you often show and describe as 45 degrees, are actually NOWHERE NEAR 45 degrees. To my eye (and I'm a machinist and a carpenter) (I know my angles!) They look more like 70/ 30 or 65/ 35 (depending on how you look at it) angles. Just sayin'! I'm kind of a stickler for details. (I'm SURE YOU of ALL people can understand!) Thanks again for all you do! It is a dream of mine, to actually meet you someday, and show you MY work! If that actually DOES EVER HAPPEN, I hope you will like and appreciate the kind of stuff I can make! Happy Making/ Happy Building Ted! and thanks AGAIN for all you do!!!
Thank you Mike. Yeah I don't say 45 degrees anymore. I say a slight bevel when cutting. Like you I started working in sculpting casting things in hard plastics of fiber glass. Once i found the wonders of foam, I'm not going back. So easy and fun to work with plus you can make a large project without breaking the bank. Thank you for your support and for subscribing.
Dear Evil Ted, Thanks SO MUCH for the personal reply!! That really meant a lot to me!! I'm a big fan of your channel and your work, and to receive a personal reply from you, is kinda like a teenager receiving a personal reply from their favorite Rock Star!! I told all my buddies at work and my costume making buddy, and they all got a kick out of it too! Thanks man!! You're truly one of the good guys! Keep up the great work and I'll try my best to do the same! I'm really looking forward to creating some really cool looking, costume armor, with this new found discovery (E V A Foam), and I have YOU, most of all, and a few other makers, to thank for my new found inspiration!!
What you did for us is simply unbelievable !!! Thank you so much ! You're videos are really helpfull and gave us an incredible motivation for working harder ! Thank you Ted !
You're so kool. I thought it would be way harder to do something like this but you made it look doable and even explained it in an easy to understand way. Thank!!
Ted I can’t thank you enough for making this easy step by step video. Iv watch a bunch of different videos trying to pick up the technique but this video put all the pieces together on what I was doing wrong. Cheers!
Excellent video. The improved sound and especially the editing make it very, very watchable and easy to understand what you're doing! Great job. Thanks.
i followed the link for the barge cement and amazon presented me with 20 items commonly purchased together (all clearly for building cosplay armour!) Brilliant
If you do a lot of paper pattern drafting, I highly recommend a pattern maker's hole punch tool. It's cut the exact shape of those registration marks. It saves a bunch of time if you have to make a lot of them and saves your knife blade from getting dull too. Great video, very useful! P.S. those sanding sticks are a Fantastic idea!
This may be a stretch due to resources and materials, but Ted would you consider doing specific cosplay types for a multitude of genres. Making something sleek for a cyberpunk cosplay with thinner materials or a ridiculously over the top fantasy style costume for people who wanna go balls to the walls in those regards. I think it would be awesome to watch in creation.
Do you think a robocop chest plate could be made using this method? & would it require a lot of individual pieces joined together ? (robocop's chest plate measures 53")
@@scorpionwins6378 NOT so easy even with cardboard patterns/templates, packed with, clay in between (the approach that I used, like how they used to sculpt car body chassis) & in 1/6 scale, but ive suceeded after MANY years. and it's all made of fibreglass inpregnated with bronze powder. I.m currently working on a 1/4 scale 18" version. when I first started I didnt know about- Pepekura method, and gluing foam portions together plus 3d printing didnt exist yet. with anything machine like the challenge is always symmetry I find. do you like the ROBOCOP design? @@nigeldonaldson1647 yeah I was a huge fan of those movies growing up. Loved the aesthetic of the body armor. Sounds like you've been very busy, I'd love to see some of your work. You should upload videos.
@@scorpionwins6378 easy NO! I wish it were, there are big problems with symmetry, angles of curve (especially trying to get each breas to align) & the rib cage type portion making it the same height on both sides, & then we come to marking the precision detail, & thats just the chest plate, its really a job for a car body designer at Ferrari or Lamborgini
thank you this was helpful. as a chef here's one tip for sharpning. since you're pulling your blade to cut, it would be best to sharpen your blade forward and not back. this will give you a longer lasting sharpness
Thanks! I watched all your videos from the very beginning like 2 months ago, now i bought the tools even X-ACTO and heat gun also the barge cement, now I'm working on my project, the armor of Lighting in final fantasy XIII-2 and so far so good! credits all to you, Angel Ted lol.
Evil ted ! Just want to say you are awesome! Im a first time cosplayer but have experience with everything you use. Im working on my first suit marvel cosplay and am using all your help !!! Thanks so much man !! You rock
Ted, I love your videos and this one was very well edited and informative. For some reason however your audio is only coming in through the left channel. I don't know if you need to adjust your mic settings or video editing or what but it's making it a little jarring to listen to.
Man, you are so talented. Not only in techniques, but also in creativity. I'm going to make the Madara Uchiha's "armour", and your videos are fantastic for it.
My friend showed me your channel and decided to take a look and thank you very much for this tutorial! I am new to making cosplay armor and i am going to make one armor cosplay for the first time and this video is very helpful! keep it up man!
Great video but your mic seems really off centre. It's so extreme it feels like I'm deaf. Worst of all its not even mono so the right sound comes in occasionally which worsens the effect.
This is an awesome tutorial! Thank you for also leaving links to everything you use!! After watching this at least 5 times, I am ready to give my first foam armor a go!
I'm researching how to make a Dr Doom outfit. but haven't a clue where to begin. I need to make chest armour, legs, boots, gauntlets, battleaxe and a gun. Any tips?
Videos are long, and necessarily so!!! Despite this you do an excellent job cutting out the bits of video where we can tell what you're doing to save time. You've earned a new sub, keep up the awesome work.
I noticed the same thing like the balance is off, heavily favored left. I checked my settings and a second set of headphones. Maybe a loose or bad contact on the mic plug. Or selecting a stereo input for your video but only recording a mono source.
Wow, this is really cool! I've always been interested in trying to make stuff like this but I always thought I'd need a lot of expensive materials and equipment. I'm surprised to see that something as cheap and pliable as floor mat foam can be used to make some pretty cool things. Evil Ted Smith Thanks for posting! Definitely worth they wait. I'm learning a lot and want to make my first piece of foam armor this summer when school's over and I can save up my money :)
Evil Ted Smith Dude you are my new god I have never built armor before thats NOT made out of paper so this is a effing huge help. Having to make 3 full armor sets before the con is going to kill me >
Follow the directions of the male one, fit it to your form, and mess around with the chest area until you get something you like. that's what I've found to be the best
Your amazing! in 3 months I have an expo I'm going to and this is very helpful! thank you so much. I'm cosplaying mettaton from undertale and this is a great outlook for it! thank you very much.
In the instance of making a wearable chestpiece, would it make more sense to create 2 separate pieces (front and back) that attach with buckles or something, or one solid piece all the way around the form?
I bet Ted gets paid BIG for this kind of stuff! Or else I'd ask him to do the armor for my archangel from my books I write. Amazing job, and great talent man!
Thanks for that part with the chest piece and how to angle it. It creates a nice 3d effect (gonna make a male armor, although I am female). Your videos are always fun to watch! :)
Hi Ted. My Name is Dan, i come all the way from Denmark, I was searching youtube for guides to make my own armor parts and found your totureals. you really inspired me alot to give it a try as well. I just need to found out if we got the stuff needed here in Denmark as well. i mostly thinking about the form mats. but a big thanks for posting these totureal, its really awsome. i did make a little myself, like my own battle damaged Terminator 2 chest part, molded in clay, took a cast af the molding and covered it with latex and so on, but i most deffently gonna try this as well. again, a huge thanks. from me.
Probably been asked before, but would a hair dryer make a decent substitute for the heat gun? Great video, btw. This will help me with my SAO II Kirito Cosplay.
Evil Ted, you're a great teacher; thanks a lot for your lessons (I hope you post much more in the future =D ). Your videos are very educative, they show real thing step by step (we feel like we're making all those things with you =D).
can you PLEASE make a video on how to build cool shin and boot armor? I'm building a titan suit from destiny and I only have the knees down left to do but I'm stumped
My left ear enjoyed this video.
Use Audio Channel chrome plugin to playback left channel in mono in both ears.
No he meant that he can here the video with his one ear because the speakers for the phones are at the bottom/right/left/ or up if your an alien
I thought my headphones were broken

In the instance of making a wearable chestpiece, would it make more sense to create 2 separate pieces (front and back) that attach with buckles or something, or one solid piece all the way around the form?
These videos are always a delight!
I bet Ted gets paid BIG for this kind of stuff! Or else I'd ask him to do the armor for my archangel from my books I write. Amazing job, and great talent man!
Thanks for all the links they're perfect for a beginner like me to jump right in! Subbed.
Dude, I cant thank you enough. Your videos are the best.
Shani Alleyne Thank you for watching.
Thanks for that part with the chest piece and how to angle it. It creates a nice 3d effect (gonna make a male armor, although I am female). Your videos are always fun to watch! :)

Do you have any templates for this? And the tutorial is fantastic, the way you lay it out and go through every step makes it so simple.
