- In this interview we meet Michael Cardo, an MP for the Democratic Alliance, and a quite superb biographer. His first book was about the far-sighted politician Peter Brown, whose Liberal Party called for a universal franchise in Apartheid South Africa in the 1960s - and was banned for its trouble. This one, on Harry Oppenheimer, focuses on another inspirational South African who's in addition to being a global mogul also spent a decade on the green benches of the country’s Parliament. Born into a mining dynasty, Harry Oppenheimer lived a full life - massively expanding the family business, breaking break with the world’s rich and powerful, and for decades serving as the most effective counter to the Apartheid regime. Cardo’s superb writing skills, access to Oppenheimer’s private documents (including an unfinished memoir) and the six years he invested into the project combine to make this into a world-class production.

Well done, most surprising and throughly ❤enjoyable interview
Excellent topic. Harry Oppemheimer is like a South African version of 'Mayer Amschel Rothschild'.
Thanks. Next on my list.
I am reading Karel Schoeman's history of SA between the Anglo Boer War and the Union, called "Imperiale Somer" (Imperial Summer), and got to understand a lot of where we come from.
I expect the same from Michael Cardo's biography.
Harry Oppenheimer's famous words: people like gold money because they are "too stupid to think of any other monetary system that will work".
I respect Oppenheimer family it's their intellectual property, they discovered goal and diamond, I was listening to a guy in the newsroom 405 that the gold and other mineral resources will be refined here in South Africa, that depends on how the Oppenheimer family suggest and think together with their people with expertise and specialized skills, president Cyril Ramaphosa must not waste his breath and energy talking and listening to these people, he must agree with Oppenheimer family about that, that is a fact, besinyathela kwezi mineral resources wazi notice the ancestors of Oppenheimer
Historians shouldn't speak condescendingly about historical figures' interests and political ideologies. It brings to question their own impartiality
There are NO excuses for his backing of the ANC!
Impressive interviewer and interviewee.
I wonder what the EFF would say about this book.... brilliant interview.
He and Rupert only backed the money🤬
Sounds to me he was very naive and not very smart!
Harry O. A Hero inn the back room
Ag wake up! He just had sooo much money he was immune and …
And who according to you can make any change in the life of the poor? The poor themselves or the rich? Just think about it.
@@rohanasmith106 F the poor!
Agree with the necessary biography of Harry O. I hope Biznews will also promote my biography of Neville Alexander. If not then Biznews promotes a one-sided view of History. Dankie!
Don't ask us. Ask them. Eish.
Who was Neville Alexander again? Asking for a friend 😉
@@gysgijsbers4202 I was about to ask the same thing
