An absolute masterpiece from a truly amazing band. The bassline being played on piano is pretty unique and iconic, combined with that drumbeat. Mark Hollis had severe stage fright, hence the glasses. What an immense talent, rest in peace!
I was totally obsessed with this song back when I first heard it. I've been listening to it regularly for 30 years and I don't think I'll ever get bored of it. So many great elements alongside a killer riff. The lyrics read like poetry. Great job on a first listen. This is actually untypical of their work. They were very much an album/studio band and famously awkward after 86' in terms of not wanting to tour, do any album promotion or even make singles. A groundbreaking band who's influence is very much heard today in bands like Radiohead and Elbow. Check out 'Living in another World' and' I believe in you' two more great singles.
This was the first I ever heard of Talk Talk. I was completely nailed by the piano which can only be described as 'mesmeric'. It blew the mind of a 13 year old and still does it at 52. RIP Mark and thanks.
Me too. It fell off the radar and I forgot about it for years, then dragged back memories of the fantastic video and the piano beat, but I couldn't for the life of me remember who it was, or track it down somehow, for years and years. Then I got randomly assigned a Return to Eden track on RUclips, bought the album, and later wondered "what else have they done before this?" To my astonishment, it was the same band! Talk about a wild progression of styles from this to Eden to Laughing Stock.
This is a masterpiece. The album is a masterpiece. Talk Talk never missed and I LOVE Mark's voice, it's so suitable to that marvelous, beautiful, emotional and powerful music. One of my favorite band EVER. Love that music!!!
Once you get deeper into their entire discography it will change your life forever, especially albums like Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stalk. But for now, these are great intros to their sound. I’m 15 and this band has already changed the way I look at things. They’re absolute maestros. Keep it up!
You're only 15, and Talk Talk seem to mean as much to you as they do me. I say this because i'm 56, and followed their progress from the debut single to Mark Hollis's solo album. To be as appreciative of this remarkable band at such tender years speaks volumes of your overall character. I can honestly say that someone like you reignites my faith in the youth of today. I hereby proclaim you as "Wise before your years". Stay aware my friend! 👌
I really love this song. I love the refrain of 'everything's alright ' throughout as well. I love their passion. Excellent reaction video. You guys are brilliant. Your passion and interest in the songs you review are brilliant.
Talk Talk is a band that have perhaps a dozen or more equally superb tracks that are hard to order - Art Rock's greatest band. This whole album has many high points but their final two albums in a more spacious, less commercial style are genius' Laughing' 'Stock and Spirit of Eden' . Happiness is Easy I think is their next go to song..
It's that hypnotic drum beat for me on this tune. This one caught me right away and had me mesmerized. Thank you for reacting to one of the most underrated bands ever. Talk Talk is transcendentalism in musical form. Edited to add: Mark Hollis' voice is easily one of the better voices in the history of music. The emotions are deep. Definitely on my playlist!
Thanks Guys..... If you listen to 'Sunset' by Kate Bush, that track has a real Talk Talk feel to it. I think they were both inspired by each other. Cheers.
Thanks for this! The whole album is 'Fire' - it must be one of the most underrated albums by one of the most underrated bands ever. It's timeless and impossible to pick as an '80's' album.
Mark Hollis' voice totally fascinates me, kind of a cross between David Bowie & Anthony Newley (look him up). He was pretty well unique in his attitude to music; once he'd said all he wanted to say he simply stopped & led a normal family life until his untimely death. His last (solo) album is definitely one of a kind, it's as much about the spaces between the notes as the notes themselves (rather like Debussy). Personally I adore it, but you have to be in the right mood to appreciate it. This is my favourite track from the album ruclips.net/video/X9fiNS8tKHk/видео.html
This song is simply extraordinary. I can't quite believe we've lost *Mark Hollis* - an incredible loss to the music industry. Sadly only the chap in the middle really seemed to grasp the brilliance of what he was listening to. The other two look rather baffled in the face of something they didn't quite understand...
@@ajmmusic3961 I find that with so many reactors - particularly when watching female musicians or vocalists - all you get is _"She's cute"_ or something equally asinine. Or they watch a compositional masterpiece and say _"Yeah cool"_ as if that's the sum total of their music appreciation vocabulary. They certainly don't have to like everything they react to, but I want reactors who are really *into the music,* rather than perpetually chasing clicks, likes, and ad revenue... 😒
@@221b-Maker-Street Well said! .... For THOUSANDS of years music has been enjoyed 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 the visual aspect! .... I believe that for a TRUE recreation, the listener should listen to the music!, and the music alone. ... JMO.
@@ajmmusic3961 Totally. And for certain masterpieces - reclining, with a decent set of headphones, eyes closed, and just lose yourself for 50 minutes or so in a sonic cocoon... I think there's also something to be said for listening to the _journey_ of an album beginning to end. The artists have often spent hours - weeks even - just -arguing with their record company- considering the order tracks should appear in to create a dynamic listening journey. Kate Bush is a good example of someone who wouldn't be sat on by her record company over releases, and her masterpiece *The Hounds Of Love* is a perfect example of why it's important to listen to a body of work in the way the artist intended. Anyhoo, we are aligned! 😂
I saw Talk Talk many times in the 80's and 90s; and they were always incredible. Mark Hollis (R.I.P.) was a musical, and lyrical genius. His passing was far too soon, and a huge loss to music in general. A couple of other tracks you guys should check out are "Gotta Give It Up" and "Such A Shame"; both live versions are epic. All are from the Montreaux Concert.
I don't know for sure, but I think that Mark Hollis might have re-recorded his vocal live for the video - he was famously un-rockstar in his behaviour and outlook, and hated miming for videos etc. Bruce Springsteen did the same for the video for Streets Of Philadelphia. Also, a word about the percussion. Everything except the drum kit was played by Morris Pert, a bit of a cult figure in music circles, who played on a LOT of records in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Apparently he was quite the eccentric, and lived like a hermit in rural Scotland, presumably in a cottage filled with every type of percussion instrument imaginable.
"Yesterday's favourite" this is absolutely a song about being not being in control. "Everything's alright" is, to a British person, a mild cry for help, and it's awful how pretending to be okay is okay.
I grew up in the 80’s and I don’t remember ever hearing this song. Now, I do like their song.. It’s my life. If you guys haven’t done that one yet, definitely add it to your list for the future!
Thanks Nick. I haven't thought of the song "Green Onions" in ages. Getting to this song, when you commented about the animals in this video it made me wish you had reacted to the official video for "It's My Life" instead of the live version. There are even more animals in that video. And sorry Ty, but I like Mark Hollis's voice.
Funny, I remember back in the day this song was never really that big, it was simply too weird for 80's pop radio, but man I thought it was the shit. There was nothing like it. Nice choice boys
What a song, Talk Talk was so underrated as a band. Thank you guys and keep them coming.
I agree, they are so underrated. For such an incredible band!

Talk Talk: such a special place in my heart for that band.

Absolute classic song by a very underrated band , RIP Mark Hollis. One of my top ten songs of all time!
RIP, Mark Hollis. The man was an absolute genius!
This song is timeless ... it just really holds up over the years. Have love it since it came out in the 80's. Thanks for reacting to it!
British music, best in the world.
As an American I agree 100%!
Colour of spring is incredible
I've loved this since it came out. One of those songs that just never get dull. Simple, tight, punchy, and soulful.

Love the drummer of Talk Talk. He was really workin' it.
Talk Talk will ALWAYS be on my playlist. Try listening to Tomorrow Started. Mark Hollis was a genius!!🎶🎵🎧👄
one of the best songs to come out the 80s,only a few songs i can listen to on repeat and this is one of them.absolute masterpiece
Did you know Steve Winwood played Hammond organ on this one.
Love that you found Talk Talk! They influenced so many others you'll, NO DOUBT, discover. Great tune! Thanks for bringing me back!
Takes me back to the 80's. Love this band. "Happiness is Easy"
is another great track.

Those 2 albums are astonishing. Taphead may be the most perfect pop/rock song ever written.
@@iaincook5835 100% agreed. After the Flood is one of my top 10 songs of all time and Taphead is how I found the band

40 years 😱
David Rhodes (Peter Gabriel) on guitar - superb.
They don't make music like this anymore, this song is so great, it's an uplifter when you're feeling down, it's one of my faves by Talk Talk
How did Mark know when to come in with his lyrics.😊.His timing is immaculate.
This album is unbelievable. Steve Winwood played on a bunch of the songs.
The tone of Mark's voice is reminiscent of a Sax.
The Brits had the best bands in the 80s.....That said The Smithereens A Girl Like You has to be on your show!
Absolutely amazing tune!

Great song from Talk Talk!
I own this album in vinyl from when I bought it at Rose Records in Chicago. My youngest son is guitarist and bassist. He loves this album
RIP Mark Hollis and Thank you.
❤️ TALK TALK!!!
Rowland S Howard also does an amazing cover of this (the guitar especially)
Thank you for your reactions!
Really engaging stuff. And the combination of personalities is extremely enjoyable. Now that's a team.
This is their best song even though i love its my life alot.
Colour of Spring is brilliant but Spirit of Eden is off the scale. Listen to it in one go it will blow your mind.
RIP Mark

That piano! I remember when this video came out - creepy yet so intriguing! Such a cool song.
Maybe mistaken but i think that was a Hedgehog as we don't have porcupines here in the UK.'Life's what you make it',Great song and message.
