    The whole album, "The Colour of Spring", is perhaps the best album of 1986. Talk Talk at their best.

    The Colour of Spring was Talk Talk's transitional album away from their earlier synth-pop to their masterpieces, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. IMHO, some of the finest music ever created.

    That album is a masterpiece. Give it a few more listens. “Time It’s Time” is a perfect outro. They weren’t main stream. We liked that.

      Those of us who had been into prog in the 70's but still made the leap to "new music" in the 80s tended to like Talk Talk because they were more musically adventurous than a lot of the standard synth acts of that period. That's even evident on their earlier stuff.

    Love you guys. I mean that when I say that anyone from the 80’s would never describe Talk Talk as not of the time - they were 100% of the 80’s which looked back to Motown across multiple bands and added the synths and current percussion and guitars. Hall and Oates is another prime example but there are dozens if not 100’s of others from this era. Understand why you see verses as awkward but this is what we always loved about T2 and Holis. Then there are songs like Its My Life and Talk Talk (yes there is a song called Talk Talk by T2) were quintessential post-punk 80’s.

    • @filifolia
      @filifolia 9 месяцев назад +5

      Yes, 80s was a LOT of different things, very unlike and divergent. That was the joy of the decade, you could have a great listen across a wide range of musical genres.

      @PanarchyInTheUK 9 месяцев назад +3

      I guess also what happens as time is telescoped, for those who look back who weren't around at the time and listening to the sheer breadth and depth of different kinds of music being made, you see the 80s music scene through a specific lens. It gets categorised into pop synth or poodle rock etc. But there was so much more going on. And it's all 80s :)

    By the way, that is Stevie Windwood guesting on the organ. Tim Friese-Greene on the weird synth - works for me!.

    • @mightyV444
      @mightyV444 9 месяцев назад +3

      Sorry, but that's not correct; Ian Curnow plays the lead synth that sounds like a guitar, and it's Tim Friese-Greene on the organ.
      Steve Winwood plays on 3 other songs on the album, though 🙂

    For what it's worth, Talk Talk is a British band and the Brits spell a lot of words with that extra "u". At some point, Americans simply stopped using it and just went with "or". Canadian English still officially uses the British spelling, but no one bats an eye when the American spelling is employed. It's pretty much interchangeable for anyone outside of government.

    • @mightyV444
      @mightyV444 9 месяцев назад +4

      Yes, it's just British English as opposed to American English.

    Loved that you keep getting back to Talk Talk, great reaction!
    I would love to see a reaction to "Living in Another World" live performance from Montreux 1986 (same show as you reacted to Its My Life), Im sure you would think its fire! Album version (also from Colour of the Spring) is great, but this live performance is just next level, one of my favourite live performances all-time!

    I saw Talk Talk multiple times in the late 80s - mid 90s. Their live shows were awesome. Mark Hollis (R.I.P.) was a musical genius. If you get a chance, check out the live version of Give It Up; if you really wanna see Mark "popp'in off".

      You couldn't have seen them in the late 80s/early 90s, as they gave up touring in 1986. Why lie about such a thing?

  • @smbake
    @smbake 8 месяцев назад +3

    Mark Hollis was an amazing musician and I'm sad to say I wasn't more into them in the early 80's, even though I was still a little young. Just wish I would have been able to experience them live. They're Live at Montreux show you can find on here shows how truly great he and the band were.

  • @robgrano6814
    @robgrano6814 9 месяцев назад +4

    You're right about this being a little atypical of the 80's. I remember when it came out some Talk Talk fans, and 80s synth-pop fans in general, were disappointed somewhat by how retro and organic it sounded. A lot of people seemed to be expecting 'It's My Life Part 2,' whereas this album has a lot more guitar and piano/organ as opposed to synth.
    Interesting what you said about the "whispery" vocals. Hadn't thought of it till now, but with that in mind you could almost hear Bryan Ferry doing this song. Some of his post-Roxy Music solo work has a similar vibe.

    That's precisely how it was! [re. 8:20 on] If you liked Talk Talk you'd rather be found dead than listen to, for example, Stock Aitken Waterman productions 🤣. I definitely was a musical snob. Nowadays it's all good, nostalgia kicks in.

    Here in the deep reaches of the 606, I wound up listening to "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock" this past summer for the first time. Someone described Mark Hollis' voice as "Pete Townshend on Dramamine." If you think his voice is shaky here, listen to "Laughing Stock" or his only solo album. Also, if you think they didn't care about changing with the times, just try those two albums. Those two albums are considered progenitors of post rock. Mark Hollis didn't give a damn what anyone thought about the last albums--especially their record company.

    Not familiar with the band. His voice is pretty good but he just does some odd things with it. I really liked the music though. Very soothing. That black square in the middle of the bottom part of the screen is distracting. Your hands and arms keep disappearing behind it. Is it a patch job?

  • @cocksya

    A lot of their songs are spiritual. “If I’m so wrong where does love come from” is about God. I’ve heard their music called white gospal.
