With the exception of Money Game 3, most of Ren’s videos were done with barely any budget using seedy hidden spots that Ren says he loves to scout. They didn’t technically have permission to use this space and had to come back a couple nights before they got the final shot. This one took well over 100 takes. It was beautifully choreographed and filmed. Ren and Samuel Perry-Falvey are a dynamic duo!
And they usually just used existing lighting with tape to redirect / filter / block. MG3 was the first video where they had more of a budget for location, lighting, and better sound equipment. Samuel Perry-Falvey did a great in-depth interview with Joe E. Sparks where they went through all of the videos he shot.
Ren has said he would love to play a villain. He would make a brilliant Joker! I definitely think acting and directing are in Ren’s future!
I figured as much with the practical lighting and location ...this is just the nature of Gorilla style filming but honestly I love the dedication to getting the shot.
I'll have to check out the interviews when I get a free moment! And I agree, he has a bright future ahead of him. I can't wait to see him succeed ❤️🎬

Yeah he said in a recent interview but this one took 183 takes over 3 days. Here's a tidbit that may blow your mind... In an interview Ren said that Hi Ren was a one take, the third take they did. They didn't have permission to be in the basement they were in, and they had 4 cameras and two mics. As they were finishing the second take, the building manager walked in and asked them to leave. They begged for another 30 minutes and that was the take they used. However, the very end part when he turns from putting down the guitar and starts talking is a separate take. They were allowed to go back when the building manager helped them submit the correct paperwork. Post production was them just taking footage from the various cameras they had set up to auto record.
Money Game 2 and then 3! 3 is a masterpiece that will amaze you!

For "Money Game 2", definitely do the lyric video. It's not a live continuous shot, but it's the most powerful version and you may have some commentary on the video style.
Money Game 1 and Money Game 3 were with Samuel Perry-Falvey. From what I've seen, Ren and Samuel bring out the best in each other - they're both great on their own, but when they collaborate, they just hit a different level. I'm sure Ren has a visual eye and contributes to the final vision.
The guitarist is Ren's friend and bandmate from The Big Push, Romain Axisa. Every time I see this, I know Samuel said in the comments there were 183 attempts and I have to wonder how many times Romain got smacked with the gloves and kneed in the gut.🥴

This was the first one shot they did and it took them going back a second day because of maintenence work going on, thereby losing 500 pounds. Lot of money to those boys back then. Think they said 183 attempts because of all the moving parts. Ren learned a lot about directing in this one. He directs himsrlf now along with Sam sonetimes. They both got a independent video award in Jan. For Money Game 3.
And i LOVED the opening!

YAY another videographer point of view reactor! Renegade here. Have subscribed, loved this reaction. And yes if you love one takes then Ren is the king. From memory i believe this took around 180 takes and they used gaffer tape around each light to direct and dim it, and that they were meant to film it the night before but couldnt cause of construction noise nearby. And yes, again, after the brilliant song of MG2 you are going to have a blast with MG3!

As far as being run out of places they used for filming: in an interview Ren said Hi Ren was filmed in a basement they didn't have permission to use and after the first one take the super came down yelling for them to get out. They begged for more time and the super gave them 30 minutes to get out. They got 4 one takes and Ren was sure they didn't get it done but they were able to edit together the final video from those 4 one takes. He said he knew they did well when he showed it to his friends and they were like "whoa..."❤
Money Game pt 1 took several nights and something like 138 takes (I've seen 180+ takes in some comments but in the BTS of money Game pt 3 by Wolf Johnson Ren is heard saying to Knox Hill that it was 138 takes for mg1. He also comments on how awful olive oil is in the eyes)
The BTS for mg3 by Wolf Johnson is highly recommended. There are 2: one shorter than the other. Not a good video for a reaction video as the short one is just under an hour and the longer video (put out by popular demand of us Renegade types) is somewhere between 2 and 3 hours. But if you want to see how a video like money Game pt 3 is made in just one take (truly just one take) then you should watch it ❤
Its funny because I tried to think what substance they used inside that gas can...now I know 🤯
That's always been the issue with Gorilla filming on location....it's like a 50/50 chance you are going to get caught, called out but I feel some times we get lucky enough to get the shot and move on. I know exactly what they went through...but at that point, it's anything for the shot! 🎬

No worries on the pausing. I appreciate what you bring. Ren has so many musical and film influences. Different listeners hear different ones except for the Reggae that most people hear. You're not the 1st person to compare to the Joker. Ren represents a couple of characters here. He's the oppressor and one that's looking in the mirror to my understanding.

Loved this! Ren said in an interview, it took them 187 takes to get this right. That's the level of dedication this guy has for his craft.
My interpretation of this video (after watching it more times than I care to mention) is that we are the hostage as a society, hostage to the Money Game but unable to see it for what it is. Blindly reacting to stimuli with mortgages, loans and bills tied like a noose around our necks. Ren is judging us for our sins and trying to pass the punishment, which he tries to do a couple of times (the rope and the bat) but we don't react so in desperation he figuratively 'opens our eyes' by drawing them on and low and behold we try to stop him pouring the petrol over us. Then he has a moment of realisation, that all this time our sins weren't our own. We were blindly reacting. If we had been given a chance to 'see' we might've not comitted them. So Ren realises it's him to blame as he was the one directing us in the first place...he looked in the mirror and saw he was part of the Money Game himself and so proceeds to dish out the punishment. That's my take on it. I could be totally wrong mind u! 😅
Really looking forward to Money Game 2. Now a word of advice, do not do the live version first. I know instinctively that would make sense, but trust me the Lyric Video is what you should see first because the live is incomplete plus the lyric video is no ordinary lyric video, it's a Ren Lyric Video. Please trust me on this 🙏 Can't wait for MG3 though! You are going to loooove that one, cinematically it is delicious!

I've really appreciated your Ren reactions. It's nice to see a point-of-view we don't get very often.
You might enjoy Ren's interview with Elizabeth of the Charismatic Voice. The whole thing is worth watching, in my opinion, but specifically for you, he gets into some of his cinematic philosophy. I'd suggest starting at min35 sec20 (edited so it doesn't show as a link), where he talks about Hi Ren being "such a juxtaposition to what should work" and "it's almost like an antidote to fast food entertainment."
When talking about the Money Game series, he mentions learning from the director that "there's so much lyricism to be written in the visuals that aren't lyrical" and "the most important thing you've got to do in cinematography is always ask a question [and] answer it with another question."
It's an interesting 10-minute conversation. That said, maybe wait until after you've watched MG3 because she includes a clip, which doesn't seem like a spoiler to me, but it might to you.

People run up on Ren all the time😂 Check out Blind Eyed- angry car park attendant! When filming Screech's part in The Tales people were yelling STFU out their window(kinda wish they woulda used that take😂) . Also at the end of Murderer you see a guy walk down the street when Ren attacks and throws a dude in the trunk of his car. Cops were called and they told the caller It's just Ren again!🤘

Oh, Ren gets interrupted when he's filming! He prefers to ask forgiveness rather than permission. For instance, they had to shoot "Hi Ren" in half an hour because the building manager discovered them in the basement without permission just after they had set up all the lighting and cameras. They begged him to let them stay so he gave them 30 minutes. I don't remember the details for this video, but I think Ren said they broke into a waterworks late at night to film this. They didn't get caught, which is good since it took them a ridiculous number of takes to get it right.
Someone once said "fortune favors the bold" REN saw opportunity and he went for it! I respect that very much 💯 Gorilla shooting is frowned upon but sometimes you have that vision and you just have to go for it!

You made the comment that Ren was going to burn the guy, but there's a really deep meaning behind all of that, more than just, Ren burning a hostage. The entire thing is a metaphor for a system. Ren represents corporate elite who pulls the strings and really calls the shots, while The hostage in the mask represents the common people, blindly following along to what "Ren" commands. The smack with the gloves, no hesitation to continue playing, the "stop" Ren commands and immediately getting that result from the captive. This dynamic changes when ren draws eyes on the captive, meaning the captive is more aware to the system than before, they can see, but only through a small lense, ultimately controlled by the system, as it was the system, or Ren who drew on the eyes to begin with. Now, that the captive can see, the captor, Ren decides to destroy that which has seen too much, (representing perhaps MLK Jr. in a way or Malcom X or someone similar) but this is the FIRST time the captive gives any resistance to the actions of Ren, he raises the gasoline jug, the captive sees this and tries to block Ren's actions with the guitar, all of a sudden, the subject isn't following along like the system wants it to. And because the system is made up of human beings just like you, me, he, and she, without the support from the captive, his plans fall upon themselves, Ren, realizes the error of his ways, and the system sets itself ablaze. Deeply meaningful.

Samuel was the DP on this. I think there were 3 people on the shoot, Sam as DP, a steady cam operator, and a focus puller. I think he explained how he did it in the interview on Joe E. Sparks channel. All of the lighting was using the existing lighting in the space only, they set up cardboard around the lights to direct the lights and that's it.
Yeah I figured as much! I was gonna say pulling focus in such a low lit area, grabbing sound, trying to bend that light to work how you need is alot of work but with a small team, time and dedication is all you need. My hats off to REN and his team for pulling off this Cinematic Storytelling Masterpiece. I cannot wait to see more...thanks again for watching/information ℹ️ 🎬

I love the way you frame and conduct these reactions. You put extra effort into making them a brilliant watch on their own; plus the commentary is excellent.
Samuel has discussed the making of this in an interview. Ren noted that it took three separate tries of filming to get everything right: a combination of the first round not capturing the feel, construction work ongoing one night and this final night it took over 130 tries.

I appreciate your insight and observations. Be forewarned, this isn't really a cliffhanger as he doesn't follow up that particular dtory. Insofar as Money Game 2, everyone will recommend the lyric video as i is not only excellently made, but has more lyrics than the live one. But, you're a filmmaker and the live version is beautifully simple and I think well worth your time.

I always thought that this video was to wake people up from APATHY.
