So this activity of the marching performing arts is called Drum Corps International (DCI), marching music major league! Yes participants in various organizations come from all over the world to push their musical journey while traveling all over the U.S.A, Canada, etc during summer months competing at adjudicated events that conclude at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana (Lucas Oil Stadium home of the NFL Indianapolis Colts). Members from each corps range from ages 14-21 (22 depending on birthday). DCI is divided into 2 divisions World Class which is the video you watched of the very accomplished Blue Devils also primarily a division with more college performers and Open Class which has more high school performers. These participants work extremely hard too perfect their show day-night with an average of 16-18 hrs day busting their butts outside no matter the weather but the work is soooooo worth it when you see the crowds reaction while feeling like a rock star performing with your brothers & sisters on the field. DCI teaches each of its participants so many incredible values about life, music, character, integrity, compassion, empathy, fight/drive, accountability, etc. More importantly, shine a bright light on some of the most amazing musical talents this planet has too offer! I am an extremely proud 9-year veteran of DCI which saved my life from suicide when I was a young teen. That is how much this activity means to me, I'm living proof of how the activity can turn your life around!
The words right out of my mouth. DCI is awesome. My personal favorites are Santa Clara Vanguard as I have a friend who performed with them back in the 1980's. All these kids work so very hard. They are not only in these bands, but also their own high school or college bands. Amazing shows, countless hours.
@@billboth6572 I had the incredible honor of marching in DCI for 9 years with various corps mostly as a Drum Major starting when it was Division 1-3 to currently Open & World Class. DCI literally saved my life as a foster child so I owe it everything to the man I am today!
Soooo glad you've finally discovered Drum Corps. And as impressive as it is to see these corps online or on RUclips, nothing compares to seeing it live. You will feel the sound wash over you. Seriously, if you ever visit the states, endeavor to seek out a stadium hosting a show. My first was the semifinals and finals in 2002 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. It was life changing. The season starts in June and ends in early August. I go usually to the Eastern Classic in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Every corps performs over 2 days. The Finals have been held lately at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. See it live. You'll never go back!
As someone who has been involved in the drum and bugle corps activity for over 35 years, it is so refreshing to see the reaction of someone who is a complete newby to what we do. You enuinely looked moved in a few places (that was a world championship show btw). I loved your descriptions of what we do and I now feel vindicated.. for over thirty five years I have described us as "marching band with serious dance and a touch of circus added in for good measure"!
They're having so much fun because everyone auditioned and they want to be there. They were this fun in the finals performance and had even more fun in their encore show. Which you just watched since you can see them wearing their first place medals and people have headcams.
Welcome to Drum Corps! This is the closest thing to professional marching band! This group is The Blue Devils from Concord, California. They are kinda like the "Yankees" of Drum Corps. They have 19 DCI championships under their belt
Courtney, there's nothing like being in drum corps. The shows, weather high school or DCI is an a AMAZING feeling, to pour your heart and soul into every show. I can't describe in words .
What you probably dont realize is the dynamic range they can play. Hearing a corps in the lot during thier warmup is the loudest thing I think I have ever heard, and its such a wall of sound too.
I was lujcky enough to be trained by some of the staff of the Concord Blue Devils. This is months and months of work that these kids put into a 14 minute show. They are the elite of the elite, and this event is what determines is the World Champion. You witnessed a bunch of bandmates 21 years or younger, fulfilling a dream in musical performance. Prior to this event, there is a long lead up of practice to get the show ready, then months of travel and competing to determine what needs tweaking. Finals week determines who goes onto the last night of Finals. That moment when you started clutching your heart, is exactly what this art is meant to do. These kids spend sometimes 16+ hours a day perfecting their show for the audience. They are perfectionists, and fianls week almost always involves last minute changes to get more flare and energy into the end of the show. My wife and I were lucky enough to attend the DCI Finals in Pasadena, California, back in 2007. The Blue Devils won, and I ran into so many old friends from my Community College Band as they were getting to do their encore performance. It is a magical experience, indeed. I hope you get to go some day, and I'd love to see your reaction.
I have to add, the "Spartacus" show is about 14min long since it includes a prelude showing the relationships between the "commanders, soldiers, and slaves". I just love how fitting the music is for the story they're telling. I'm just gonna assume you know the whole Spartacus story lol.
I was lucky to be a part of this group and this performance. It was an emotional, beautiful summer. You’re right, band is serious, but we broke that mold and just had so much fun. We obviously never saw our own show in person from the audience side, but hearing people talk about seeing our show is always emotional. Thank you for helping me re live that summer a bit and giving a few tears seeing someone enjoy what we did 3 years later. We did it for people to enjoy and react just as you did.
Thanks for giving Jerry Seawright his first win as a performing member! A shame Brandon Olander didn't march this show...he'd be a member of the VERY exclusive 4-ring club.
Davis I left a long response to the TheBlueDevils response if you want to take the time to read it, but congratulations! IMO there is no other DCI show that sniffs Metamorph. My absolute favorite DCI show ever! What a thrill to have been in such an amazing ensemble.
Definitely look up more Drum Corps International videos. And YES, it's even more amazing sitting in the stands watching a competition. And LOUD!!! These competitions last all day long, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a lot of videos from the past. DCI got started in the mid-1970s, if I'm remembering right. By the time I got into high school marching band in the early 1980s, DCI competitions were already a really big deal for "band people." Glad to see you enjoyed the video!
There were a number of callbacks in the show...the solo guys in the very beginning were playing clips from earlier winning programs. The marching at the very beginning...how many people notices that their HEELS hit the yard lines, not the toes? VERY old school. And i can tell you that when they added the Pegasus Wings closer to the end of the season, all us 80s alums freaked out (maybe the 07 alums as well). I remember actually yelling 'WE HAVE WINGS!" the first time I saw it and could not really explain to my wife the significance. Those kinds of callbacks always get me, whether it's the Ode to Joy quote at the end of 07 BD, the Send in the Clowns quote from the end of 17 Santa Clara Vanguard, the Conquest stabc every year from Boston Crusaders, etc. You have to love it when a corps honors it's history in performance.
I usually don't comment on videos, but I was very impressed with how perceptive you were about what you were seeing. So glad that someone from outside the activity can recognize and appreciate it for what it is. There are currently 45 of these groups active within the sanctioning body Drum Corps International (DCI). Shows are held all across the US and Canada each summer with the World Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana in early August every year. Unfortunately this summer's tour has been cancelled but keep your eyes out for the 2021 tour. This is currently my favorite show of all time because it's a love letter to the activity and a celebration of how it has developed over the last several decades. Glad you enjoyed it!
Not just playing it, but playing it well while pulling off the incredible marching they do in corps. I had the horn chops for DCI, but I sure as hell didn't have the marching chops. Mad respect for those guys!!
Courtney, welcome to an activity called Drum & Bugle Corps. This has existed in the US and Canada for many decades. I am a Blue Devil, but not one that you watched. I marched with the Concord Blue Devils for four of my teen years, 1974 - 1977. I am now 62. This activity existed for many decades even before I did this. The Blue Devils have won more Drum Corps International Championships than any other corps. You stated that you would like to attend a competition like this, and you can, but not this year. DCI has shut down all drum corps activity during 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic. For future years you can find the calendar for DCI shows on the DCI web page dci.org, and select the schedule & tickets tab. I strongly suggest you attend the international championship which is held in Indianapolis in mid August. This is the stadium you saw in the above video. You can also obtain a great many videos of past championships, and can even find many of them online. If you have any questions, please PM me, and I will be happy to assist.
I've been following the Devils since 1977. I was lucky to live in Concord and was fortunate to go to several competitions. As in the title, this was the encore. the actual performance to win the world championship was earlier and better. It is very different to go and see the performance, when the wall of sound hits you you get a tingle down your back. The Blue Devil drum section is one of the best in the world. Their is a video of the Top Secret Drum Corps from Switzerland versus the Blue Devil drum line. It's awesome
If you like it by just watching it through a video, you NEED to see it live someday! It’s truly something unlike anything else and the amount of sound coming at you all at once with Singh crispness and clarity is astounding. I’m grateful have both been an audience member and a corps member in the past 4 years and hope I can march a few more years but yeah you need to see this live! I’m glad you enjoyed watching an activity that is special to so many people for a variety of reasons :)
For those of you who don’t know, DCI, or Drum Corp international, is a competition in which the main feature is the drum line and front Ensemble or Pit with some wind features. They’re extremely fun but are mainly for college competition. They are exciting to watch live or at home on TV.
I've watched a few of your reactions now, but since this is the first time you saw DCI I'll put this here. I would venture a guess to say about 60% of us who were band geeks have it in our heads that we join marching band as a precursor to join a professional band. For brass and drumline, DCI is like the gold standard of Competitive Marching. They used to set a block of time aside on Public Channels to show them, but I haven't seen them shown lately. I was mainly a Trumpet player, and had it in my head to join DCI (particularly the Blue Devils) when I was like 19-20. I ended up joining the military instead at 19 and it all fell through. I ended up in the Navy Band for a year while going through training, and still hold DCI skills in high regard. I'm glad you are so into this, it's a long standing tradition in America to have Drum and Bugle Corps. Congrats on your good tastes :) I have seen one DCI band live (Blue Devils) and performed in multiple marching band competitions from middle school to college and it is a completely overwhelming experience to have the wall of sound (The Wall) hit you when you are just 100 ft away. It goes through your whole body when brass wails and drums kick. But in my opinion, the best feeling comes from when everyone cuts off a note at the same time and you get that echo/reverb that bounces off the stadium.
Hey Courtney. So glad you discovered and actually enjoyed this. I'm from Maryland and live in Christchurch now. I used to do this activity way back when. I played snare drum and tenor drums. My ex is from Christchurch and never heard of drum corps until we met. I took her to DCI Finals in Denver in 2004. It was her first live performance. She was absolutely blown away by it. You need to experience this LIVE. There are no videos that really bring you the total experience......if you have the opportunity, definitely go to a world championship!
My participation in a DCI corps and my all brass and percussion college marching band experience are why I'm a high school band director today. I absolutely love this activity, and the people involved in it.
I went to the World Championships this past season, 2019. You mentioned the energy, and how that must feel. It's nothing you could ever imagine. I definitely wasn't moved to tears a couple times. Please do try to come to America to watch one of these competitions. You won't regret it.
I marched in the Blue Devils in the mid 80's and taught there in the mid 90's. This show was an amazing tribute to the corps' legacy in the activity. It tugs at my heart strings every time I watch it. I'm so thrilled you were able to view it and share your impressions with all of us!
A few years ago, I was at a DCI show that went into a rain delay. Ended up talking to some of the members from BD. Some of the nicest people- so appreciative of me being there and willing to answer all of my questions. Gave me even more respect for this corps than I already had. Class act!
As a long time drum corps fan I LOVE seeing new people getting into the activity. Just seeing the happiness on your face makes me so glad to be a part of the drum corps community. I’d love to see some more reactions on this sort of content just because I love seeing commentary on shows
"Wow! They look so proud!" CLASSIC! Of course, they SHOULD be proud: They are in the Drum Corps International 2017 Championship and (btw) they are performing in the (fricking) BLUE DEVILS. What's not to have pride in???? LMAO!!!!!
i LOVE that she's BEAMING the whole time!!! they're so happy cause they just won a world championship! the blue devils are incredible, some of the best movers and players out there. i'm /so/ glad she likes band as much as we do. maybe somehow we can help fund a trip for her to 2021 dci finals!!
When I was in high school in the 90s, our band director was actually the Blue Devils B Corps director back in late 80s very early 90s. My senior year we actually borrowed I believe the 86 Blue Devils Championship show, Channel One Suite. Unfortunately it didn't quite look or sound as good as the DCI show lol
Speaking as the one who's comment on another of her vids probably led her to do THIS one....awesome! *Also speaking as an alum of the 1984 Blue Devils!*
I also commented on one of her other reaction videos to the college bands about looking into Drum Corps videos. She definitely picked a great one, but can you really go wrong with DCI lol.

As a DCI fan this was really fun to watch. This was the first DCI show I had ever seen and it was so great to get a little bit of that experience back.
I joined drum corp 1988. I loved it. It was intense and brought so much joy and pride to my life. I Marched in a smaller corp, but we placed in the finals that year. My favorite big corps at the time was the Chicago Cavaliers.
This brought back so many memories from when I was a kid, having 3 older siblings that were in marching band/color guard, I’ve been to MANY competitions and it was always fun and cool to see different schools compete with their different styles
Welcome to the power of Drum Corp my friend! This brought me so much joy to watch. As a first time observer, you got it! You got everything from that performance that the kids intended to give you! I've been following drum corp since I was a teen so I know what to expect (although they amaze me each year). But it was so much fun to witness it from your perspective as a first timer. I hope one day you can make it to The States to watch a live performance. We'd love to have you as part of the Drum Corp International (DCI) family!
I watched them almost 10 years ago in an international competition shortly after I graduated high school in NJ of the states. They were so good, they gave me goose bumps.
I’m in marching band and I live in America, and we take it VERY seriously. We’re the highest achieving and awarded marching band in our county & we’re huge.
Having been to a few DCI competitions in the last few years, it's amazing watching what they put on the field. I saw the Bluecoats, a group from Ohio, premiere their show in Detroit last season and their raw power was enough to push me back in my seat.
With your nascar videos and marching band videos and now your DCI videos... you've definitely earned my sub! I highly recommend you continue looking into more shows. Videos do not do the impacts and energy justice. In person this stuff is breath taking
Please do more Drum Corps!! As a performer I am so proud to watch people enjoy the art I’ve put to much effort into. I love it please keep watching DCI!
I'm definitely in agreement with several others on here. Check out some of the older Drum Corps International videos. In recent years (last 5-7 years), DCI has gotten to be all about how weird, "modern", and complex it can get. In years past, it was all about marching and musical precision and skill.
Might’ve been mentioned before, but also the most of the people right on the sideline cheering on the drum corps are staff members that taught and built lifelong bond with the members pouring their hearts out that year. With the exception of dci media staff, judges on the sideline where they’re stationed, and some official, that’s the corps volunteers and staff clapping 3 feet from them and what a feeling that must be.
Sadly the drum corps season was canceled this year but we'd love to see you at a champs in 2021! It's super cool seeing your genuine reaction to a different art form, it warms our whole communities hearts
This video made me so damn happy. Seeing someone react to an activity that I participate in and am in love with who has never heard of or seen it before and loving it makes me happy. In the states, there isn't much love or attention brought to drum corps from mainstream media, so seeing this just brought a smile to my face. You should watch more drum corps because it is such a cool activity with some amazing shows.
When I played in Drum Corp in 1968 to 1972 my Soprano Bugle had 1 valve and a slide for accidentals, when I left drum Corp my horn had 1 valve and a rotor. You can catch an old 1972 DCI championship, still considered one of the best performances ever..
I’ve marched for the Spartans, Open Class drum corps and 2019 Open Class Champions, as a tuba for the past two years and DCI is honestly the most fun and the biggest challenge I’ve ever attempted. What you see here is the result of 12-14 hour days all summer starting in mid-May. I’ve played in that stadium 5 times now and the energy in there is insane. If you ever get a chance to go, then you gotta go
I was there for the past couple of years. DCI will be there till 2028 I believe. This is held in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is spectacular to watch and see the hard work the musicians put in for the whole summer.
This honestly makes me so happy. If you're looking for other shows, I'd highly recommend Carolina Crown's "Relentless", Santa Clara Vanguard's "Babylon", and Phantom Regiment's "Spartacus" 💚
I never competed at this level or anything, just did marching & concert band in high school. But it was also the time when I was the MOST fit of my entire life. I remember years ago watching a short documentary around the drum corp marching competitions and part of it was about some people pushing to get it considered an actual sport like any other for school credits and the like. So they had one of the drummers (because could really do it with anyone using any of the other instruments) wear sort of a portable stress test kit: mask measuring breathing and oxygen usage, heart monitor, etc. The results were around the same as those of a competition marathon runner. Only he wasn't just running in a straight line so to speak. Remembering and performing the choreography and music on top of the physical workout... Mad respect for everyone who's ever done this!
I've always described DCI as a marching corps that would perform for NFL, like a marching band would for a university. I promise that you'd tear up if you saw any of these corps live; they evoke so much emotion that you couldn't help but to shed a tear, or just go full on sour cry face.
You mentioned them looking proud; this was their "victory run" right after winning the world championship! I love watching DCI, and this is a great place to start!
I did this in highschool and we were pretty good. So good that we gave away the awards we won to students every year. It is incredibly fun but also incredibly physically demanding. One of my friends in the band played baseball and basketball and said marching band was harder than both.
Thanks for all the kind words and we're glad you enjoyed it!

Yankees, haha. More like the Patriots of Drum Corps
@@diminuendo61 Haha the Patriots were trash from the beginning until Bill and Tom teamed up.
If you want to keep on this topic, 2008 Phantom Regiment's show of Spartacus was absolutely magnificent.
The Donhaile and that’s on killing the drum major
@@elijahcrosby786 having marched Blue Devils in 08 I hate that show LOL
Its to die for
BDCG 08 here and def agree
The Beat My Heart Skipped
Try watching the video “Carolina Crown’s Hornline drops the hammer.” That video highlights the feeling of the sound created from just the horns.
She might go deaf
@@Yoshi-uz2oe that's what makes it awesome
Yes do this!!!!! Best vid ever!! Crown Brass is insane!!
2008 phantom regiment "Spartacus" is definitely an all time great. Also from 2008, The Cavaliers "Samurai" show is one of my favs.
I have to add, the "Spartacus" show is about 14min long since it includes a prelude showing the relationships between the "commanders, soldiers, and slaves". I just love how fitting the music is for the story they're telling. I'm just gonna assume you know the whole Spartacus story lol.
i completely forgot about Samurai
DCI Started in 1972 first Championship
Please watch the Blue Devils 2019 show, titled "Ghostlight"
Ryatt Price I like the way you think
I saw it live in seattle
Trumpet Videos I saw it in wake forest North Carolina! If only I appreciated drum corps the way I do now. Man.
I see you’ve discovered Drum Corps International. These bands are Professional and the real deal.
It good to see people who dont really have background in this stuff but still have such great appreciation for the time this stuff take
As a trumpet player, I know for a fact that people don't realise HOW DIFFICULT it is to play any of those...
Amen
Our sections tried to learn it for our season in 2018. For fun and sectionals. As a first I must say, My asshole hasn’t recovered.
i tried to play trumpet once... my lungs still are pissed.
Not just playing it, but playing it well while pulling off the incredible marching they do in corps. I had the horn chops for DCI, but I sure as hell didn't have the marching chops. Mad respect for those guys!!
@@Mr.Potato420 i can play it! its not much air and lungs its just ur embouchure
I'm proud to be part of Concord, a small town who has one of the best DCI bands :)
What instrument did you play?
BDTrooper76 brass or percussion?
Now this is a true DCI Campion to the core. 👍😎 My respect
“it reminds me kinda of the circus” i know she meant well and all but i have to say i did laugh
If you want a circus, watch their 2014 program “Felliniesque” winning them the world championship title and the highest score in DCI history of 99.650
My front tech marched 14, and he never let us forget it
Captain kiwi i wouldn’t either lol
Or 2012. 😅 I heard that the vis techs literally studied animal scatter patterns to write some of the drill that year
I've been following the Devils since 1977.
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone react to drum corps stuff on RUclips. You are the first I’ve seen. Watch some more please, it’s awesome!
For those of you who don’t know, DCI, or Drum Corp international, is a competition in which the main feature is the drum line and front Ensemble or Pit with some wind features. They’re extremely fun but are mainly for college competition. They are exciting to watch live or at home on TV.
Every year I go back just to listen to this, by far my favorite show ever. I love blue devils.
RIP to Dave Dugan, the original drum major for Blue Devils (1970-1976)....massive stroke yesterday and passed earlier today, 5/23/20.
“Major circus vibes” *laughs in Felliniesque*
Ghostlight has entered the chat
Congrats on your good tastes :)
I have seen one DCI band live (Blue Devils) and performed in multiple marching band competitions from middle school to college and it is a completely overwhelming experience to have the wall of sound (The Wall) hit you when you are just 100 ft away.
There are no videos that really bring you the total experience......if you have the opportunity, definitely go to a world championship!
that's what's up. where'd you march?
LMAO!!!!!
1989 Santa Clara Vanguard Phantom of the Opera !
Our band director had us watch that when I was in high school in the 90s. That was such a cool show
Came here to say this.
The next one you should 100% watch is 1977-1978 Bridgeman. Jim Brady is insane
Your genuine response is EVERYTHING! I’m sure the Drum Corp community is super appreciative of your kind words!
My entire family were big drum corps fans. Can't even count how many DCI competitions we went to. Thanks for the memories.
Blue Devils have been creating high quality shows for decades. Always a pleasure to watch their shows!
This is great! Now try any Carolina Crown show 2007--2019! They have a completely different style!

Nate Gonz they really are P.S I’m a trumpet player
When I was in high school in the 90s, our band director was actually the Blue Devils B Corps director back in late 80s very early 90s. My senior year we actually borrowed I believe the 86 Blue Devils Championship show, Channel One Suite. Unfortunately it didn't quite look or sound as good as the DCI show lol
Daniel Dunlap wow i didn’t realize blue devils B has been around that long
@@elijahcrosby786 Blue Devils B has been around since the late 70's. I taught their color guard in 1980 after I aged out of the A corps.

As someone who’s marched many years, DCI was one of the most incredible things I have ever had the privilege to be apart of!
I ain’t in a drum core, I was in a Highschool marching band but all I can say is we watched these guys all the time, they’re awesome!
Y’all picked the best show to show her that’s for sure!
I love watching these videos of you reacting to dci. I went to high school with some of the guys in this video and they were role models.
Girl if you loved the video just wait until you see it in person your jaw just drops you get chills .
Thank you for loving us Blue Devils!!! We come from all over the world!!
“Circus swinging things“ IM DEAD 😂
The ending of metamorph gives me chills every single time I hear it. Absolute banger of a show!
I love watching people react to drum corps who have never experienced or marched it before, so happy that word is getting out there
Having been to a few DCI competitions in the last few years, it's amazing watching what they put on the field.
Normally reaction videos are super cringe, but your positive energy is actually contagious 😷😂
Going to a DCI event is like no other....you don't just hear the sound, you actually feel it. with the visuals.
With the exception of dci media staff, judges on the sideline where they’re stationed, and some official, that’s the corps volunteers and staff clapping 3 feet from them and what a feeling that must be.
watching somebody experience drum corps for the first time is one of the best things
BLUE DEVILS OOOOOH AHHHHH SEND IT SON! BEST DCI CORPS EVER!!!!
Sadly the drum corps season was canceled this year but we'd love to see you at a champs in 2021! It's super cool seeing your genuine reaction to a different art form, it warms our whole communities hearts
Just listening to the trumpets for the first time on metamorph almost made me cry. That halfway point had so much impact.
I absolutely LOVE seeing people's first reactions to DCI! Heartwarming video! :)
OH! And a fan favorite one to watch would be "Drum Corpse Bride" from The Academy! 👻
It is great to see a person who enjoys Drum Corpse. I'm going to binge watch DCI from the late 90s till now, now.
Enjoyed this very much.
The fact that Drum Corps is getting out there is amazing
Also on your own time you gotta watch the Marimba cam for this show
I did this in highschool and we were pretty good. So good that we gave away the awards we won to students every year. It is incredibly fun but also incredibly physically demanding. One of my friends in the band played baseball and basketball and said marching band was harder than both.
I'm glad youtube recommended this video to me. Made me smile seeing someone new enjoy DCI
You seriously need to continue watching these type of DCI videos. I love when people first discover DCI.
This is how it all begins. A sweet, innocent soul falls down the DCI rabbit hole.
