You guys were struggling with some bad luck for sure. I hope things turned around. At least you knew there were a couple of bucks in the area. I always take a backup rifle to camp. Marty, like I had told some people at the office, if it could go wrong, it went wrong. We had a good time, but there were ups and downs the whole week. We always take a backup rifle ourselves, but to save room I told Jerod a week before we left, I wasn't going to take one. So, he didn't take on either. We have had situations like you mentioned before, someone else had an issue with their rifle and they used one of ours. I learned from this year, take a backup rifle, make room for it. Things may have been different for Jerod if the rifles we have now would have had iron sites and he had a set of see-thru mounts. After knowing he missed that first buck, and knowing his scope is off, the second buck he could have dropped down to his iron sites and most likely gotten it. I know there is a lot of controversy over see-thru mounts, but I am old school and if my rifle has iron sites, I am going to have see-thru mounts on them. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie

Brain, it probably wouldn't have, if we would have had back up rifles with us. But I had told Jerod the weekend before that I wasn't taking a backup rifle. I wanted to save room, so he didn't take one either. Here is another reason that these manufactures have upset me when making rifles, the manufactures are putting iron sites on rifles anymore. It is hard to find a bolt action rifle with iron sites. Now days it is all about scopes, don't need iron sites. I am old school, and I believe all firearms should have iron sites on them. Of course, I have taken some flak on that issue as well. Some have posted on my review of my 700 BDL about having the see thru mounts on my rifle. I know many hunters who have rifles with see thru mounts, and I understood their reasoning for it. If these rifles would have had iron sites on them, and we would have had see thru mounts, once Jerod discovered he didn't hit the first buck, and when he saw the second, he could have dropped down to the iron sites and maybe gotten the second one. Oh well, that is a total different story, Brain. Oh, we did check that evening, and he got his scope back in and I even shot mine to check, it had moved and I had set it back, and mine was good. @@JnJTrueOutdoorAdventures every rifle I have has see thru mounts. Won't hunt without them. Did one time and had a buck go by that I couldn't see through the scope because the sun was shining on it too much. It has see thru mounts on it now too.
Man..I am kind of in shock! Misses happen to us all..deducing why the miss is the hard part and honesty with it hurts..BUT it drives home the lesson/bad memory of never doing it again. Hope things turn around for you guys as i am aggravated but still cheering!
Rondy, it's tough, but that is part of hunting. Since all this, I have already removed that Nikko Sterling scope that came with the rifle when it was bought new. I have ordered, received, and mounted a new scope. It is the same one I have on my 700 BDL 30-06. Now to hit the range and get it zero'd. The one lesson also learned is no matter what happens in camp, at least shoot the rifle before starting your hunt. If we would have just taken 30 minutes to setup a target on Sunday, and shot things may have been different on Tuesday. Thank you for watching and commenting. Juddie

If you find you need to replace the scope, make sure you get Lockable, or Resetable turrets.. Also, if you have a place to check your zero, don’t hesitate to check your zero before every hunt.. Lord knows that is the one most important factor when you are hunting big game.. I’m sure you will take all of this into consideration when you replace the scope. David, I have already ordered and received my new scope. I made sure that it had turret covers. I believe the Nikko Sterling scope that came with the rifle when we bought them was a scope for target/range shooting, not a hunting scope. Generally, every year we go to camp, we do shoot the rifles to make sure they are zero'd. But with the issues we had the first two days with Jerod's camper we just didn't do it. We should have taken the time just to setup a can, a box or something and shot the rifles. We did get his set back that evening when we came off the mountain. I even checked mine as well. We learned some hard lessons this year for sure. One of them is to have a backup rifle, which we always have done. But this year to safe room, I decided not to take mine, and Jerod decided since I wasn't taking one he wasn't either. Thank you for watching and your comment. Juddie

Thanks, Mark. Oh, I felt really bad for him. Especially know the issue with the turret on these scopes. We treated those rifles like expensive china making sure that we didn't shoulder them or cradle them to where the turret would rub up against everything. By next season these rifles will have different scopes on them. Heck, I did exactly what I said I was going to do, I got home that Saturday, ordered the scope I wanted, and it is already on the rifle. I know you do, Bill. As I have said, we as hunters, have all experienced this in one form or the other. We learn from it and move on. What we learned here is that scope, the Nikko Sterling, that came with the HOWA when we bought them, is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. I have done removed mine, replaced with one I ordered that Saturday night when we got home from camp. Now to go to the range or the farm and get it zero'd for next year. Also, a valuable lesson learned, is no matter the issues you have in setting up camp, like we did this year, take at least 30 minutes and check the rifle. Check the zero. Another valuable lesson, take a backup rifle. We always have taken a backup rifle, but this year to save room, I told Jerod I wasn't taken one and he decided not to take one. Big mistake there. Watched 2 bucks chase does all around the field ,out my dining room window, while having Thanksgiving dinner. Even with Thanksgiving being late. Bucks were still in the mood, even though none of the does seemed to be.
Nick, we honestly think the rut was way early this year. We didn't find much evidence up on the mountain of recent rutting activity. What scrapes we found were old. A lot of people I talked to think the rut came in like the first week of November instead of around the 17th. This year has been a strange year. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie
Such a coincidence..I'm in wv also..just started watching yall before buck season, had no idea you were shooting Howa. I bought the same gun in .270 before season and zerod it in dead on at 100. It wasn't until I cased the gun, brought it home from the range and uncased it that It dawned on me to take note of where I had adjusted the turret. I don't know if my son messed with it before then or if it had moved that significantly in the case but I missed 3 deer. I was blaming myself because I hadn't hunted or shot a rifle much since I was 18 but I was always a decent shot and couldn't convince myself that I was that bad. I went back to the range before hunting again and was 30 some clicks high! I hate that scope. If I had paid more attention to where it was set at the range I may have caught it but that thing moves so easy any time you move with the gun
Some of your content that I've seen indicates we live pretty close..in the same county at least..I'd almost bet we bought our rifles at the same place..store with the same name as a city a little while north of us? Lol
@@brandonjohnston875 sorry to hear you had the same issue as Jerod. When we first bought them we shot around 400 rounds each through them. Between the weeks of shooting is when we discovered the turret could move. That is when, after get them set again we took a picture of the turret. Of course, mine was easy to remember, the turret was at 1.5 and the horizontal line was 4. We bought our rifles at Park Center, but we live in Fayette County. Since this video I did what I said, either in this video or one of the next three videos, when I got home Saturday evening, I got online and ordered a new scope. I have already removed my Nikko Sterling and replaced it. That video will come out after I get the rest of the rifle season done. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie
@JnJTrueOutdoorAdventures thanks for your reply. I commented early before I saw Jerod tell the story from his perspective. With the look all over his face, I felt it all over again. I know he wanted to beat that rifle off the closest tree to him. I forgot you were in Fayette, for some reason I was thinking you said kanawha in another video. I live in kanawha. The guy at Bridgeport equipment told me about the turret but I guess I didn't realize how sensitive it was. I bought one of my o/u shotguns at park center it seemed like a really nice place. I quit hunting when I was 18 after years of hunting and not having shot opportunities. Trying to get back into it now and get the kids involved. I'll be more prepared next year, but I'll be saving up for another rifle or another scope. May look into a different rifle and put a different scope on the Howa later for the kids to use when they're ready.
@ I love the HOWA 308 I have. The features of that rifle are awesome compared to more expensive rifles like my 700 BDL Remington. The HOWA has aluminum pillar bedding and the action reminds me so much of my 8x57 Mauser and the 700 BDL. Good luck with whatever you do, good luck next season.

We have all been there and we all know how down you get from that experience, especially if it is a nice, racked buck. We did check his rifle that evening when we came down off the mountain. We got it back to where it was supposed to be. I even checked mine, especially since I had noticed after getting on top of the mountain mine had moved. I checked the picture I had taken last year of the turret and got mine back to where it was supposed to be. We had talked about changing those scopes last year after hunting season. We noticed the issue then, but we had taken pictures of the settings and kept them zero'd. Heck we both got 6 pointers last year using those scopes. The 6 pointer he got last year was at least over 175 yards away and he dropped him. Mine was closer, maybe only 30 yards from me when I shot him. So, we had the scopes set. All the frustration with the camper the first 2 days, it just had us all messed up. @ juddie you don’t know how much i enjoy watching your videos. With my health being like it is I haven’t got to go hunting much this year. But i feel like maybe i’ll get out this afternoon. Just looking to get a little more meat. Here in South Carolina we have a long rifle season. I hunt thick areas with my Henry 45-70. I had a bad hunt earlier this year. I was up in a tree about 20 ft had to pee so i stood up in the stand, unbuckled and unzipped whipped it out and it was cold so it was taking forever to get started so I’m standing there waiting to get started, and I think about all the stories I’ve heard about a buck catching people when using the bathroom and sure enough one walks right in, so when it stepped behind a tree i got the gun up. Now understand every other deer I’ve ever shot with that gun has just died right there. I shot this buck it flipped it over upside down and my drawers went to my knees. I sat the gun down to get my pants up then that buck started kicking and got up and slowly dropped over the ridge. I just knew it couldn’t go far. I looked for him for 2 1/2 hours ive got a bad heart and could tell I needed to stop so i called 2 friends of mine they looked for 4hours each. No deer no blood nothing. They can be tough sometimes. This is why I’ve always stuck with my old school scopes. For mountain deer hunting a basic 3x9 or even a straight 4x is all u need. All the new gimmicks are great for long range field and target shooting but let’s be honest how many times in the mountains is a shot over 150yds the norm?

Didn't help, so I am doing things like I used to, going back to my roots let's say. Forget all these fads and gimmicks, all you are doing is making someone or some company rich. @ don’t blame u. The new this and new that every year is over the top. Guys I work with get new bows & guns every year or at minimum every other. I still do 95% of my deer hunting with an old 336 30-30 with a 4x scope I’ve had for 32 years. Got it for Xmas when I was 12 years old. I’ve taken good care of it and it’s still in great shape and works like a charm. Killed some really good bucks with that old gun. The biggest was scored @ 146” & people honestly couldn’t believe I killed it with a 30-30. Which is absolutely hilarious 😆
Tough one to swallow for sure. Misses are part of what we do and definitely not what we want!!! That’s definitely a target style turret, sucks to find out that way after taking deer with it already. Man I feel naked if I go on overnight trips without backup guns and it might be a good thing to shoot as soon as camp is setup, not telling ya what to do but it’s burned a lot of us….me included. Most new scopes have a zero indicator now, a lower numbered ring that you zero once sighted and it’s an awesome indicator when you’re wondering if stuff moved around. True outdoor adventures in the title is earning its money on this trip!!!!
Yes, it was, Matt. If you hunt, you will have misses, either bow hunting, rifle hunting or muzzleloader hunting, it will happen eventually. Absolutely, Matt, that is what I have said, it is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. That was my fault about the backup rifles. I told Jerod to safe room, that I wasn't going to take one this year, so he didn't bother taking one. Won't happen again!! We had planned to shoot, but with the issues with the camper we had, well it threw things off for us. Jerod had even said that he wanted to shoot, but with everything going on we ran out of time. I know we should have made time. Our whole mood went from excitement to down in the dumps over the camper issue. That camper is only 2 years old, bought brand new and only used 4 times, including this trip, and have that issue with the slide. That is enough to depress anyone, as well as make them angry. These scopes have the vertical numbered marks, and it has the horizontal numbered marks, as mentioned last year we knew this could happen and we took pictures on our phones so we could reset them back. But walking with those rifles shouldered the turret could rub against your back, or your backpack, walking through the laurel or brush, the turret could be bumped and turned. Just so aggravating, that is why, already I have changed my scope. I did what I said that Saturday night when I got home, I ordered a new scope for my rifle. Yes, on our channel you will see both the good times when everything goes right and you will see the bad times, even if we get flak from it. You get the true outdoor adventures, and we keep it real. @@kevinlangford3275 last year we both got bucks with that rifle and scope combo. We discovered that issue with the turret last year and took pictures of the settings so if they moved we knew where to put them back too. Apparently, this year his turret turn more than what we thought they would turn and when he set it back, it was still off. If the Nikko Sterling company would have designed it to have a cap, like the windage turret, or put a locking ring on the turret these would be awesome scopes. Gotta disagree about the see thru sites. If you buy low power, high shelf scopes. Steel rings, not aluminum. Your scope shouldn’t move. I never ever had problems with any of our scopes. You said it’s hard to get back on game if you miss with a scope. There again you should not have any trouble if your scope, if it’s on a low sitting. On my granddaughters rifle I mounted a 1x5. She hasn’t missed yet. She generally has her scope on 2.5. She hasn’t had to shoot very far, but most shots in the woods are 50yds and under.
We've learned a lot since then and I have already switched to better scope, and sure Jerod will be doing the same after the holidays, but we're not trying to say that every scope is going to fail. It really wasn't a scope or ring failure; it was that stinking turret. I have come to realize that the Nikko Sterling scope is a target/range scope, and not a hunting scope. It is probably easier for people to get on game with a scope than it is for me. Hunting big timber, trying to follow a running deer, swinging the rifle for me it is hard. That is why my older rifles that have iron sites, mostly my Remington's, they all have see-thru mounts on them. Now the more modern bolt action rifles don't even come equipped with iron sites and I have to live with that. When I am hunting with a 3-9x40, I generally have mine set for 4, sometimes 6 power, never run it up to 9 power unless I am scoping way off looking at something that might be a deer. Of course, I don't take those real long shots, I wait for it to get closer. I guess I should maybe carry a pair of bino's with me instead of using my scope to check out the next hillside. Todd, it was great to get to hunt, but our mood had gone from a high to a low after the issue with the camper for two days. Trying to get that high again was hard. But it was nice being in the woods, and hoping a nice buck would come through. Yes, that scope is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. Hunting scopes would have covers over the turrets. This scope had the cover over the windage turret, but not on the elevation turret and no way to lock it in place once set. Todd, I should have cut off his shirt tail, but with all that had happened so far, didn't think it was wise!! LOL LOL Todd, if you're a hunter, it is going to happen at one time in your life, if not a few times in your life. So many things can go wrong that you're not aware of. We did check the rifle and mine that evening when we came down off the mountain. We got his set back, took a new picture just to make sure everything, the markings, showed up clearly as to where it was set. I shot my rifle, and it was good. Nice caliber, Darwin. I have already removed the scope and put on a scope that I like very much. I have the exact scope that I put on the 308 that I have on my Remington 700 BDL 30-06. Is it a high dollar scope that cost more than the rifle, nope, but it does the job, it is clear, and I really like it. I don't fall into that stuff that the scope has to cost as much as the rifle or twice as much as the rifle. It is a tool, and if it works like it is supposed to, then that is all I need. I wish Jerod and I would have changed them out after last deer season, but we didn't, and of course he paid the price for it. Melvin, that is a nice setup!! If you look at the videos of my Remingtons that I have, if I remember right, all of them, well except for the 700 BDL, have Tasco 3-9x40 scopes on them. Of course, they are the older Tasco's from the late 70's to late 80's. I have never had an issue out of them, well I had one that fogged internally, and I replaced it with another Tasco. This HOWA came with the Nikko Sterling scope, but as of now, that scope is off, and I have a new scope on it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie

Vortex Razor is where it’s at. They give you free turret set to your caliber and bullet. Everything we do during deer season and prep boils down to that shot. Fork out the 2k and live knowing your good to go 😅
Yes, those Razor scopes are very nice. I think those are just a little out of my price range, especially since this upcoming year I will be retiring. @@kevinlangford3275 nope, those Allen screws are for removing the turret once zero’d and setting the numerical value on the”0”. So if you zero at 100 yards, and the turret has Ben set to “0”, if you need to shoot further distance you can adjust, and then put it back to “0” and be back at 100 yard zero. We have checked, even last year when we discovered the issue and knew we had to be careful how we carried the rifle so the scope turret wasn't turned. Lee, as of now, the Nikko Sterling that came with the HOWA 308 is off of my rifle and a new scope has been mounted. Now to zero it in. I know a few times it has been mentioned about the ozonics. We just have never thought about doing that. More gear to have to take in the woods with us. I know we have been getting comments about us talking down the scope, and that should have shot the rifle before ever stepping in the woods. As I have mentioned in the video, and maybe in the next video coming, the scope came with the rifle when we bought it, we zero'd the rifle and after last year's hunt we saw that it didn't take much to move the turret. We checked our zero's and took pictures with our phones of where the scope was set but had talked about replacing them. Heck we both took deer last year with that rifle and scope. Jerod thought he had the scope set back to where it was in the picture, just didn't realize it had turned so much. Those scopes won't be on the rifle next season, I can guarantee that! Charles, you know, the time we put in is what makes the hunts so rewarding. It’s not all about the kill. It’s about the time we spend together in the woods. Well, honestly, I believe that scope is made for target/range shooting and not hunting. That is why there is no turret cover on the elevation turret. The windage turret has a turret cover. I believe you're right about PETA. LOL I know Jerod felt bad, but being his dad, I even felt bad for him. But as hunters we all know misses can and will happen during your lifetime of hunting. Carl, I am sure Jerod will see your comment. With his job and family, he doesn't get much time to get on here and reply much. Not sure the meaning of the "hot hands on the back of your neck" is meaning. At first, I thought it might be in regard to the issues I was having with my GoPro batteries and the cold. If that was it, I have been doing some searching here on RUclips and have seen where people were suggesting using the hot hands in a bag with the batteries to keep them warm, so you don't lose charge in the cold. So how many rotations did the scope turn on you,for it to shoot that high it would have to have turned a several times One click is only a 1/4 inch at a hundred yards, for it to shoot that high it must have had to really been turned to be that off. Definitely need to replace those scopes. Not to mention, the scopes that come on the vast majority of package guns are trash to begin with. Everyone can’t afford a Leupold or Nightforce , but they make very good affordable scopes. You definitely get what you pay for. That cheap scope just cost him the biggest deer in his life.
Mark, don't know how many times that turned, or if he went the wrong direction to bring it back to the marks that the picture on his phone showed. We knew this last year and took pictures of the settings. The scopes did good last year, even with that issue, and we both took bucks with them. The one he got was just over 175 yards and he dropped it. Mine was closer, at about 30 yards. I have already replaced mine; I did what I said I was going to do, I got home that Saturday, and that night I order a new scope for my rifle. I love the HOWA 308; I just don't care for the Nikko Sterling scope that came on it. That scope is a target/range scope, if it was for hunting, I am sure it would have had a turret cover or at least a way to lock it down to keep it from being easily turned. @ The rifle is a very good rifle. I know that you will be better off with a different scope on it. Companies like Howa,Remington,and Savage all make outstanding rifles, but the scopes the put on their package deals and the cheaper ones so the can make a profit on the rifle deal, and usually they use the cheaper scope mounts and rifles as well. With a quality scope,rings and mounts your Howa rifle will never let you down in any situation.
I wouldn't have even taken that gun in the woods if that turret moves that easily.Any doubt what's so ever in your mind,shoot the gun.Things happen and im glad you didn't wound any deer.
Adrian, the scope, in my mind is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. To have an exposed turret that can be turned just by shouldering the rifle behind you and it rubs along your jacket, or brush could move it is not a scope to have for hunting. That Nikko Sterling scope came with the rifles when we bought them. We knew the issue last year, we both took pictures of the turret settings just in case it would move, and we both took bucks last year with them. Jerod and I usually do shoot our rifles before we start the hunt that week, but with the issues we had with his camper, time just got away from us and we didn't even think. That day, after we came down from the mountain, I setup a target and we got his rifle set back, and I checked mine as well, it was good. We are glad that it was clean misses and there wasn't a wounded animal that we couldn't recover. Jerod did check for quite some time to see if he could find any evidence of a hit and found nothing. Sorry you missed, but if your hunting with a scope like that, I can't believe you would step foot into the woods hunting without taking a shot to make sure you're zeroed in. In my eyes, that's more of a priority than your camper
Thanks, Chip. We had this issue of the turret moving last year, we both took pictures of the settings when we zero'd the scopes, so we knew where to set them back if it turned. Last year during hunting season we both took 6 pointers with those rifles and scopes. Jerod thought his scope was back on the exact markings that were in his video, but apparently that turret had turned enough that the markings he put it back to were off and caused him to overshoot. You are right, that checking the rifle before going in should have been priority over the camper, but that camper is only 2 years old, he bought it brand new and this made the 4th time it had been used since he bought it. Knowing how much money he paid to buy that camper and to have an issue like that after only owning it for two years, it really gets you down, upset and angry all at the same time. If we hadn't had to spend literally 2 days trying to get that slide going, we would have taken the rifles out and shot them. The issue with the camper puts a whole different mood on the hunt. The one thing, as mentioned, next year there will be a different scope on these rifles. That scope is for range shooting and not hunting. If it would have been for hunting it would have had a turret cover over the adjustment or someway to lock it down once set. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie
Kevin, I am 64 years old, and if I shoot a buck and get it, I am like it was my very first deer excited. Also, if I were to shoot and miss, I am like that kid on his first deer hunt that misses a deer, I am all tore up inside. Gus, we learned how to use them. We actually was able to both take bucks with them last year. The issue is a scope with that type of turret that doesn’t have a cover to go over it or a locking ring to lock the turret in place when set. It doesn’t take much to turn the turret. Taking it in and out of a padded case, shouldering it and it rubs against your back or backpack if you are carrying one, not to mention twigs, laurel bushes, etc rubbing against it. Yes, the scope came with the rifle when purchased, it was a package deal from the company. To me this scope is okay if you’re just a target shooter, but for hunting I do believe it is a bad scope to use. We do appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie
I love your videos but as a hunter, never shoot at a second deer when you are tracking to see if you have wounded or killed a deer. You had buck fever and it will get the best of you.
Brandon, he had been checking to see if he had made contact. After searching and not finding any evidence is when he shot at the other buck. What seems like minutes on a RUclips video could be an hour or hours. We know the ethics of hunting, that you search for any sign, hair, small droplets of blood on the ground or along bushes or trees. We aren't first time hunters, I have been hunting for 40+ years and Jerod for at least 26+ years. We bow hunt, rifle hunt, muzzleloader hunt, and we know about checking evidence of a hit and tracking deer. Heck my one brother-in-law shot a deer with a bow and had given up tracking, I went to help, and he started calling me bloodhound. We found the deer even though he was ready to give up. Now, of course, he may have had buck fever, we all get that, especially when you see a real nice rack. The blood starts pumping, the breathing starts picking up due to the excitement, you have to learn to control it before making that shot. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie

Darwin, it was the scope. The turret had turned, and apparently enough that when he adjusted it back to the settings that he took a photo of when we zero'd the scope that he didn't get it exactly right and was shooting high. That scope should have not come with that rifle if they didn't provide a way to lock it or have a cap to cover the turret so that it didn't move. You can’t do that, if you do that the turret is still there just the numbered knob has been removed. If the company would have made a cap that screwed on, just like any other scope has, then that would been fine. Or if they had a locking ring to where once set you could lock it down. The windage turret has a cap that covers it, the elevation turret doesn’t. The scope I think is made for target shooting, not hunting. I do like it because once zero’d you could loosen 3 Allen head screws, lift up the numerical cap, turn it to “0” put it back down and adjust your elevation on the fly. Then you could turn it back to “0” and be zero’s again to the original zero. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie
It’s not bad luck when it an avoidable situation it’s hunter error it happens to everyone but most take responsibility and learn something not blame it on bad luck or do u give all the credit for good things to good luck rather than skill n preparation and successful achievement its a bad sportsman to blame the equipment for his mistakes those are decent scopes but they are tactical scopes not meant for hunting the right tool for the job is critical for success in any situation sounds like a lesson learned the hard way
Well Russ, I agree with you to some extent. It was our fault for not taking time to shoot our rifles before we started hunting. The issues we had when we first go there had really put us down. Then after getting those things resolved we ran out of time to get out and shoot the rifles. We ALWAYS shoot the rifles the day before we start our hunt. We still blame the scope or HOWA for putting those scopes with the rifle. The rifle is a fine rifle, shoots great, but as you already said, the scope is a target/range scope, NOT a hunting scope. Now last year when we got the rifles and zero'd the rifles we knew of this issue, we took pictures of the settings just in case they were to turn on us. We both took bucks last year using them, heck the buck Jerod took was just over 175 yards from him, mine was only 30 yards from me. We had talked about replacing the scopes, but we knew how to correct the issue, we had pictures, we knew we could set it back. Apparently, his turret must have made several turns, or he may have gone the wrong direction trying to get it set back. Who knows. But it was a lesson learned, and the scopes will be coming off our hunting rifles. We aren't target/range shooters we are hunters. At least they were clean and clear misses on the deer. He did all he could to very if he had hit them, no evidence whatsoever. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie
You guys were struggling with some bad luck for sure. I hope things turned around. At least you knew there were a couple of bucks in the area. I always take a backup rifle to camp. Marty, like I had told some people at the office, if it could go wrong, it went wrong. We had a good time, but there were ups and downs the whole week. We always take a backup rifle ourselves, but to save room I told Jerod a week before we left, I wasn't going to take one. So, he didn't take on either. We have had situations like you mentioned before, someone else had an issue with their rifle and they used one of ours. I learned from this year, take a backup rifle, make room for it. Things may have been different for Jerod if the rifles we have now would have had iron sites and he had a set of see-thru mounts. After knowing he missed that first buck, and knowing his scope is off, the second buck he could have dropped down to his iron sites and most likely gotten it. I know there is a lot of controversy over see-thru mounts, but I am old school and if my rifle has iron sites, I am going to have see-thru mounts on them. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie

Brain, it probably wouldn't have, if we would have had back up rifles with us. But I had told Jerod the weekend before that I wasn't taking a backup rifle. I wanted to save room, so he didn't take one either. Here is another reason that these manufactures have upset me when making rifles, the manufactures are putting iron sites on rifles anymore. It is hard to find a bolt action rifle with iron sites. Now days it is all about scopes, don't need iron sites. I am old school, and I believe all firearms should have iron sites on them. Of course, I have taken some flak on that issue as well. Some have posted on my review of my 700 BDL about having the see thru mounts on my rifle. I know many hunters who have rifles with see thru mounts, and I understood their reasoning for it. If these rifles would have had iron sites on them, and we would have had see thru mounts, once Jerod discovered he didn't hit the first buck, and when he saw the second, he could have dropped down to the iron sites and maybe gotten the second one. Oh well, that is a total different story, Brain. Oh, we did check that evening, and he got his scope back in and I even shot mine to check, it had moved and I had set it back, and mine was good. Man..I am kind of in shock! Misses happen to us all..deducing why the miss is the hard part and honesty with it hurts..BUT it drives home the lesson/bad memory of never doing it again. Hope things turn around for you guys as i am aggravated but still cheering!
Rondy, it's tough, but that is part of hunting. Since all this, I have already removed that Nikko Sterling scope that came with the rifle when it was bought new. I have ordered, received, and mounted a new scope. It is the same one I have on my 700 BDL 30-06. Now to hit the range and get it zero'd. The one lesson also learned is no matter what happens in camp, at least shoot the rifle before starting your hunt.

If you find you need to replace the scope, make sure you get Lockable, or Resetable turrets.. Also, if you have a place to check your zero, don’t hesitate to check your zero before every hunt.. Lord knows that is the one most important factor when you are hunting big game.. I’m sure you will take all of this into consideration when you replace the scope. David, I have already ordered and received my new scope. I made sure that it had turret covers. I believe the Nikko Sterling scope that came with the rifle when we bought them was a scope for target/range shooting, not a hunting scope. Generally, every year we go to camp, we do shoot the rifles to make sure they are zero'd. But with the issues we had the first two days with Jerod's camper we just didn't do it. We should have taken the time just to setup a can, a box or something and shot the rifles. We did get his set back that evening when we came off the mountain. I even checked mine as well. We learned some hard lessons this year for sure. One of them is to have a backup rifle, which we always have done. We treated those rifles like expensive china making sure that we didn't shoulder them or cradle them to where the turret would rub up against everything. By next season these rifles will have different scopes on them. Heck, I did exactly what I said I was going to do, I got home that Saturday, ordered the scope I wanted, and it is already on the rifle. I know you do, Bill. As I have said, we as hunters, have all experienced this in one form or the other. We learn from it and move on. What we learned here is that scope, the Nikko Sterling, that came with the HOWA when we bought them, is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. I have done removed mine, replaced with one I ordered that Saturday night when we got home from camp. Now to go to the range or the farm and get it zero'd for next year. Also, a valuable lesson learned, is no matter the issues you have in setting up camp, like we did this year, take at least 30 minutes and check the rifle. Check the zero. Another valuable lesson, take a backup rifle. We always have taken a backup rifle, but this year to save room, I told Jerod I wasn't taken one and he decided not to take one. Big mistake there. I could feel your pain right through the screen . That is a tough break for sure. However if you are going to miss best to miss very well . Better than tracking a wounded deer that may not get recovered. All you can do is try and put it behind you and go forward.

Watched 2 bucks chase does all around the field ,out my dining room window, while having Thanksgiving dinner. Even with Thanksgiving being late. Bucks were still in the mood, even though none of the does seemed to be.
Nick, we honestly think the rut was way early this year. We didn't find much evidence up on the mountain of recent rutting activity. What scrapes we found were old. A lot of people I talked to think the rut came in like the first week of November instead of around the 17th. This year has been a strange year. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie
Such a coincidence..I'm in wv also..just started watching yall before buck season, had no idea you were shooting Howa. I bought the same gun in .270 before season and zerod it in dead on at 100. It wasn't until I cased the gun, brought it home from the range and uncased it that It dawned on me to take note of where I had adjusted the turret. I don't know if my son messed with it before then or if it had moved that significantly in the case but I missed 3 deer. I was blaming myself because I hadn't hunted or shot a rifle much since I was 18 but I was always a decent shot and couldn't convince myself that I was that bad. I went back to the range before hunting again and was 30 some clicks high! I hate that scope. If I had paid more attention to where it was set at the range I may have caught it but that thing moves so easy any time you move with the gun
Some of your content that I've seen indicates we live pretty close..in the same county at least..I'd almost bet we bought our rifles at the same place..store with the same name as a city a little while north of us? Lol
@@brandonjohnston875 sorry to hear you had the same issue as Jerod. When we first bought them we shot around 400 rounds each through them. Between the weeks of shooting is when we discovered the turret could move. That is when, after get them set again we took a picture of the turret. Of course, mine was easy to remember, the turret was at 1.5 and the horizontal line was 4.
We bought our rifles at Park Center, but we live in Fayette County.
Since this video I did what I said, either in this video or one of the next three videos, when I got home Saturday evening, I got online and ordered a new scope. I have already removed my Nikko Sterling and replaced it. That video will come out after I get the rest of the rifle season done.

@JnJTrueOutdoorAdventures thanks for your reply. I commented early before I saw Jerod tell the story from his perspective. With the look all over his face, I felt it all over again. I know he wanted to beat that rifle off the closest tree to him. I forgot you were in Fayette, for some reason I was thinking you said kanawha in another video. I live in kanawha. The guy at Bridgeport equipment told me about the turret but I guess I didn't realize how sensitive it was. I bought one of my o/u shotguns at park center it seemed like a really nice place. I quit hunting when I was 18 after years of hunting and not having shot opportunities. Trying to get back into it now and get the kids involved. I'll be more prepared next year, but I'll be saving up for another rifle or another scope. May look into a different rifle and put a different scope on the Howa later for the kids to use when they're ready.
@ I love the HOWA 308 I have. The features of that rifle are awesome compared to more expensive rifles like my 700 BDL Remington. The HOWA has aluminum pillar bedding and the action reminds me so much of my 8x57 Mauser and the 700 BDL. Good luck with whatever you do, good luck next season.

We have all been there and we all know how down you get from that experience, especially if it is a nice, racked buck. We did check his rifle that evening when we came down off the mountain. We got it back to where it was supposed to be. I even checked mine, especially since I had noticed after getting on top of the mountain mine had moved. I checked the picture I had taken last year of the turret and got mine back to where it was supposed to be. But I did do what I said in the video, or maybe it is the next video, as soon as I got home, I ordered me a new scope and it has now been changed. Jerod will probably get him one after the holidays. John, I am sure Jerod has read your comment. With his job and family, he doesn't get a lot of time to reply to everyone like I can. I am just glad for him that it was clean misses. We had talked about changing those scopes last year after hunting season. We noticed the issue then, but we had taken pictures of the settings and kept them zero'd. Heck we both got 6 pointers last year using those scopes. The 6 pointer he got last year was at least over 175 yards away and he dropped him. Mine was closer, maybe only 30 yards from me when I shot him. So, we had the scopes set. All the frustration with the camper the first 2 days, it just had us all messed up. @ juddie you don’t know how much i enjoy watching your videos. With my health being like it is I haven’t got to go hunting much this year. But i feel like maybe i’ll get out this afternoon. Just looking to get a little more meat. Here in South Carolina we have a long rifle season. I hunt thick areas with my Henry 45-70. I had a bad hunt earlier this year. I was up in a tree about 20 ft had to pee so i stood up in the stand, unbuckled and unzipped whipped it out and it was cold so it was taking forever to get started so I’m standing there waiting to get started, and I think about all the stories I’ve heard about a buck catching people when using the bathroom and sure enough one walks right in, so when it stepped behind a tree i got the gun up. Now understand every other deer I’ve ever shot with that gun has just died right there. I shot this buck it flipped it over upside down and my drawers went to my knees. I sat the gun down to get my pants up then that buck started kicking and got up and slowly dropped over the ridge. I just knew it couldn’t go far. I looked for him for 2 1/2 hours ive got a bad heart and could tell I needed to stop so i called 2 friends of mine they looked for 4hours each. No deer no blood nothing. They can be tough sometimes. This is why I’ve always stuck with my old school scopes. For mountain deer hunting a basic 3x9 or even a straight 4x is all u need. All the new gimmicks are great for long range field and target shooting but let’s be honest how many times in the mountains is a shot over 150yds the norm?
I totally agree with you!! I have come to the conclusion these Nikko Sterlings scopes that came with the rifle were for target/range shooting, not hunting. As I mentioned in this video or maybe the next few, as soon as I got home, I ordered a new scope, the one I have on my 700 BDL 30-06, and I have already changed it. Jerod, I am sure will be getting him a new one after the holidays. Honestly, I have had it with all the gimmicks. I didn't use anything back in my early years, then started watching Outdoor Channel with Jerod when I was getting Jerod ready for going hunting, we started using some of those gimmicks they would show. Didn't help, so I am doing things like I used to, going back to my roots let's say. Forget all these fads and gimmicks, all you are doing is making someone or some company rich. @ don’t blame u. The new this and new that every year is over the top. Guys I work with get new bows & guns every year or at minimum every other. I still do 95% of my deer hunting with an old 336 30-30 with a 4x scope I’ve had for 32 years. Got it for Xmas when I was 12 years old. I’ve taken good care of it and it’s still in great shape and works like a charm. Killed some really good bucks with that old gun. The biggest was scored @ 146” & people honestly couldn’t believe I killed it with a 30-30. Which is absolutely hilarious 😆
Tough one to swallow for sure. Misses are part of what we do and definitely not what we want!!! That’s definitely a target style turret, sucks to find out that way after taking deer with it already. Man I feel naked if I go on overnight trips without backup guns and it might be a good thing to shoot as soon as camp is setup, not telling ya what to do but it’s burned a lot of us….me included. Most new scopes have a zero indicator now, a lower numbered ring that you zero once sighted and it’s an awesome indicator when you’re wondering if stuff moved around.

Yes, it was, Matt. If you hunt, you will have misses, either bow hunting, rifle hunting or muzzleloader hunting, it will happen eventually. Absolutely, Matt, that is what I have said, it is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. That was my fault about the backup rifles. I told Jerod to safe room, that I wasn't going to take one this year, so he didn't bother taking one. Won't happen again!! We had planned to shoot, but with the issues with the camper we had, well it threw things off for us. Jerod had even said that he wanted to shoot, but with everything going on we ran out of time. I know we should have made time. Our whole mood went from excitement to down in the dumps over the camper issue. That camper is only 2 years old, bought brand new and only used 4 times, including this trip, and have that issue with the slide. That is enough to depress anyone, as well as make them angry. These scopes have the vertical numbered marks, and it has the horizontal numbered marks, as mentioned last year we knew this could happen and we took pictures on our phones so we could reset them back. But walking with those rifles shouldered the turret could rub against your back, or your backpack, walking through the laurel or brush, the turret could be bumped and turned. Just so aggravating, that is why, already I have changed my scope. I did what I said that Saturday night when I got home, I ordered a new scope for my rifle. Yes, on our channel you will see both the good times when everything goes right and you will see the bad times, even if we get flak from it. You get the true outdoor adventures, and we keep it real. Lesson learned....I would have never left a crap scope like that on my rifle...the time to have fixed that was long before you hit the woods...I'm really sorry that happened...yall don't get many chances like that.
@@kevinlangford3275 last year we both got bucks with that rifle and scope combo. We discovered that issue with the turret last year and took pictures of the settings so if they moved we knew where to put them back too. Apparently, this year his turret turn more than what we thought they would turn and when he set it back, it was still off. If the Nikko Sterling company would have designed it to have a cap, like the windage turret, or put a locking ring on the turret these would be awesome scopes. Gotta disagree about the see thru sites. If you buy low power, high shelf scopes. Steel rings, not aluminum. Your scope shouldn’t move. I never ever had problems with any of our scopes. You said it’s hard to get back on game if you miss with a scope. There again you should not have any trouble if your scope, if it’s on a low sitting. On my granddaughters rifle I mounted a 1x5. She hasn’t missed yet. She generally has her scope on 2.5. She hasn’t had to shoot very far, but most shots in the woods are 50yds and under.
We've learned a lot since then and I have already switched to better scope, and sure Jerod will be doing the same after the holidays, but we're not trying to say that every scope is going to fail. It really wasn't a scope or ring failure; it was that stinking turret. I have come to realize that the Nikko Sterling scope is a target/range scope, and not a hunting scope. It is probably easier for people to get on game with a scope than it is for me. Hunting big timber, trying to follow a running deer, swinging the rifle for me it is hard. That is why my older rifles that have iron sites, mostly my Remington's, they all have see-thru mounts on them. Now the more modern bolt action rifles don't even come equipped with iron sites and I have to live with that. When I am hunting with a 3-9x40, I generally have mine set for 4, sometimes 6 power, never run it up to 9 power unless I am scoping way off looking at something that might be a deer. Of course, I don't take those real long shots, I wait for it to get closer. I guess I should maybe carry a pair of bino's with me instead of using my scope to check out the next hillside. Oh, yes, we have, Charles. We were prepared, we knew this last year, and we both took pictures of those turrets so we could set them back. Heck last year we both got bucks that week with those rifles and scopes. I have determined that these scopes that came with the rifles were target/range scopes, not hunting scopes. I have already removed mine and as I said in the video, as soon as I got home, I ordered a new scope, and it is already on my rifle. You know Charles, every year we go hunting we always have a backup rifle, except for this year. I had told Jerod that I wasn't taking a backup to save on room. That scope great for target shooting but for hunting up on the mountain and in the woods just to many ways you could bump or move it without even knowing!! Todd, it was great to get to hunt, but our mood had gone from a high to a low after the issue with the camper for two days. Trying to get that high again was hard. But it was nice being in the woods, and hoping a nice buck would come through. Yes, that scope is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. Hunting scopes would have covers over the turrets. This scope had the cover over the windage turret, but not on the elevation turret and no way to lock it in place once set. Todd, I should have cut off his shirt tail, but with all that had happened so far, didn't think it was wise!! LOL LOL Todd, if you're a hunter, it is going to happen at one time in your life, if not a few times in your life. So many things can go wrong that you're not aware of. We did check the rifle and mine that evening when we came down off the mountain. We got his set back, took a new picture just to make sure everything, the markings, showed up clearly as to where it was set. I shot my rifle, and it was good. Todd, that is why we call it "True Outdoor Adventures" and "We Keep It Real", you see the good times and the bad times. This year at camp it was some bad times for sure. I have that same rifle in 270 and that turret moved on me once and I took it off and put a regular cap back on and never had a problem again.
Nice caliber, Darwin. I have already removed the scope and put on a scope that I like very much. I have the exact scope that I put on the 308 that I have on my Remington 700 BDL 30-06. Is it a high dollar scope that cost more than the rifle, nope, but it does the job, it is clear, and I really like it. I don't fall into that stuff that the scope has to cost as much as the rifle or twice as much as the rifle. It is a tool, and if it works like it is supposed to, then that is all I need. I wish Jerod and I would have changed them out after last deer season, but we didn't, and of course he paid the price for it. Melvin, that is a nice setup!! If you look at the videos of my Remingtons that I have, if I remember right, all of them, well except for the 700 BDL, have Tasco 3-9x40 scopes on them. Of course, they are the older Tasco's from the late 70's to late 80's. I have never had an issue out of them, well I had one that fogged internally, and I replaced it with another Tasco. This HOWA came with the Nikko Sterling scope, but as of now, that scope is off, and I have a new scope on it. Thanks for watching and commenting. Juddie
I have the same scope on a weatherby 30-06 did it to me once I now put a piece of electrical tape around it to keep it in place it has been working fine so far

Vortex Razor is where it’s at. They give you free turret set to your caliber and bullet. Everything we do during deer season and prep boils down to that shot. Fork out the 2k and live knowing your good to go 😅
Yes, those Razor scopes are very nice. I think those are just a little out of my price range, especially since this upcoming year I will be retiring. @@kevinlangford3275 nope, those Allen screws are for removing the turret once zero’d and setting the numerical value on the”0”. So if you zero at 100 yards, and the turret has Ben set to “0”, if you need to shoot further distance you can adjust, and then put it back to “0” and be back at 100 yard zero. Just a thought men but check to see if your turrets have a zero stop. It’s almost a necessity with cap less turrets.
We have checked, even last year when we discovered the issue and knew we had to be careful how we carried the rifle so the scope turret wasn't turned. I know a few times it has been mentioned about the ozonics. We just have never thought about doing that. More gear to have to take in the woods with us. I know we have been getting comments about us talking down the scope, and that should have shot the rifle before ever stepping in the woods. As I have mentioned in the video, and maybe in the next video coming, the scope came with the rifle when we bought it, we zero'd the rifle and after last year's hunt we saw that it didn't take much to move the turret. We checked our zero's and took pictures with our phones of where the scope was set but had talked about replacing them. Heck we both took deer last year with that rifle and scope. Jerod thought he had the scope set back to where it was in the picture, just didn't realize it had turned so much. Those scopes won't be on the rifle next season, I can guarantee that! Charles, you know, the time we put in is what makes the hunts so rewarding. It’s not all about the kill. It’s about the time we spend together in the woods. As for the ozonics, if I was 30 years younger, I might spend the money to get that, but at my age, I will just keep hunting like I have for 42 years. Appreciate you watching and commenting, Charles. Well, honestly, I believe that scope is made for target/range shooting and not hunting. That is why there is no turret cover on the elevation turret. The windage turret has a turret cover. I believe you're right about PETA. LOL I know Jerod felt bad, but being his dad, I even felt bad for him. But as hunters we all know misses can and will happen during your lifetime of hunting. Not sure the meaning of the "hot hands on the back of your neck" is meaning. At first, I thought it might be in regard to the issues I was having with my GoPro batteries and the cold. If that was it, I have been doing some searching here on RUclips and have seen where people were suggesting using the hot hands in a bag with the batteries to keep them warm, so you don't lose charge in the cold. So how many rotations did the scope turn on you,for it to shoot that high it would have to have turned a several times One click is only a 1/4 inch at a hundred yards, for it to shoot that high it must have had to really been turned to be that off.
Definitely need to replace those scopes. Not to mention, the scopes that come on the vast majority of package guns are trash to begin with. Everyone can’t afford a Leupold or Nightforce , but they make very good affordable scopes. You definitely get what you pay for. That cheap scope just cost him the biggest deer in his life.

@ The rifle is a very good rifle. I know that you will be better off with a different scope on it. Companies like Howa,Remington,and Savage all make outstanding rifles, but the scopes the put on their package deals and the cheaper ones so the can make a profit on the rifle deal, and usually they use the cheaper scope mounts and rifles as well. With a quality scope,rings and mounts your Howa rifle will never let you down in any situation.
I wouldn't have even taken that gun in the woods if that turret moves that easily.Any doubt what's so ever in your mind,shoot the gun.Things happen and im glad you didn't wound any deer.
Adrian, the scope, in my mind is a target/range scope, not a hunting scope. To have an exposed turret that can be turned just by shouldering the rifle behind you and it rubs along your jacket, or brush could move it is not a scope to have for hunting. That Nikko Sterling scope came with the rifles when we bought them. We knew the issue last year, we both took pictures of the turret settings just in case it would move, and we both took bucks last year with them. Jerod and I usually do shoot our rifles before we start the hunt that week, but with the issues we had with his camper, time just got away from us and we didn't even think. That day, after we came down from the mountain, I setup a target and we got his rifle set back, and I checked mine as well, it was good. We are glad that it was clean misses and there wasn't a wounded animal that we couldn't recover. Jerod did check for quite some time to see if he could find any evidence of a hit and found nothing. Sorry you missed, but if your hunting with a scope like that, I can't believe you would step foot into the woods hunting without taking a shot to make sure you're zeroed in. In my eyes, that's more of a priority than your camper
Thanks, Chip. We had this issue of the turret moving last year, we both took pictures of the settings when we zero'd the scopes, so we knew where to set them back if it turned. Last year during hunting season we both took 6 pointers with those rifles and scopes. Jerod thought his scope was back on the exact markings that were in his video, but apparently that turret had turned enough that the markings he put it back to were off and caused him to overshoot. You are right, that checking the rifle before going in should have been priority over the camper, but that camper is only 2 years old, he bought it brand new and this made the 4th time it had been used since he bought it. Knowing how much money he paid to buy that camper and to have an issue like that after only owning it for two years, it really gets you down, upset and angry all at the same time. If we hadn't had to spend literally 2 days trying to get that slide going, we would have taken the rifles out and shot them. The issue with the camper puts a whole different mood on the hunt. The one thing, as mentioned, next year there will be a different scope on these rifles. That scope is for range shooting and not hunting. If it would have been for hunting it would have had a turret cover over the adjustment or someway to lock it down once set. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie

Kevin, I am 64 years old, and if I shoot a buck and get it, I am like it was my very first deer excited. Also, if I were to shoot and miss, I am like that kid on his first deer hunt that misses a deer, I am all tore up inside. Gus, we learned how to use them. We actually was able to both take bucks with them last year. The issue is a scope with that type of turret that doesn’t have a cover to go over it or a locking ring to lock the turret in place when set. It doesn’t take much to turn the turret. Taking it in and out of a padded case, shouldering it and it rubs against your back or backpack if you are carrying one, not to mention twigs, laurel bushes, etc rubbing against it. Yes, the scope came with the rifle when purchased, it was a package deal from the company. To me this scope is okay if you’re just a target shooter, but for hunting I do believe it is a bad scope to use. We do appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie

I love your videos but as a hunter, never shoot at a second deer when you are tracking to see if you have wounded or killed a deer. You had buck fever and it will get the best of you.
Brandon, he had been checking to see if he had made contact. After searching and not finding any evidence is when he shot at the other buck. What seems like minutes on a RUclips video could be an hour or hours. We know the ethics of hunting, that you search for any sign, hair, small droplets of blood on the ground or along bushes or trees. We aren't first time hunters, I have been hunting for 40+ years and Jerod for at least 26+ years. We bow hunt, rifle hunt, muzzleloader hunt, and we know about checking evidence of a hit and tracking deer. Heck my one brother-in-law shot a deer with a bow and had given up tracking, I went to help, and he started calling me bloodhound. We found the deer even though he was ready to give up. Now, of course, he may have had buck fever, we all get that, especially when you see a real nice rack. The blood starts pumping, the breathing starts picking up due to the excitement, you have to learn to control it before making that shot. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie

Darwin, it was the scope. The turret had turned, and apparently enough that when he adjusted it back to the settings that he took a photo of when we zero'd the scope that he didn't get it exactly right and was shooting high. That scope should have not come with that rifle if they didn't provide a way to lock it or have a cap to cover the turret so that it didn't move. It's not the scope just take the turret off
You can’t do that, if you do that the turret is still there just the numbered knob has been removed. If the company would have made a cap that screwed on, just like any other scope has, then that would been fine. Or if they had a locking ring to where once set you could lock it down. The windage turret has a cap that covers it, the elevation turret doesn’t. The scope I think is made for target shooting, not hunting. I do like it because once zero’d you could loosen 3 Allen head screws, lift up the numerical cap, turn it to “0” put it back down and adjust your elevation on the fly. It’s not bad luck when it an avoidable situation it’s hunter error it happens to everyone but most take responsibility and learn something not blame it on bad luck or do u give all the credit for good things to good luck rather than skill n preparation and successful achievement its a bad sportsman to blame the equipment for his mistakes those are decent scopes but they are tactical scopes not meant for hunting the right tool for the job is critical for success in any situation sounds like a lesson learned the hard way
Well Russ, I agree with you to some extent. It was our fault for not taking time to shoot our rifles before we started hunting. The issues we had when we first go there had really put us down. Then after getting those things resolved we ran out of time to get out and shoot the rifles. We ALWAYS shoot the rifles the day before we start our hunt. We still blame the scope or HOWA for putting those scopes with the rifle. The rifle is a fine rifle, shoots great, but as you already said, the scope is a target/range scope, NOT a hunting scope. Now last year when we got the rifles and zero'd the rifles we knew of this issue, we took pictures of the settings just in case they were to turn on us. We both took bucks last year using them, heck the buck Jerod took was just over 175 yards from him, mine was only 30 yards from me. We had talked about replacing the scopes, but we knew how to correct the issue, we had pictures, we knew we could set it back. Apparently, his turret must have made several turns, or he may have gone the wrong direction trying to get it set back. Who knows. But it was a lesson learned, and the scopes will be coming off our hunting rifles. We aren't target/range shooters we are hunters. At least they were clean and clear misses on the deer. He did all he could to very if he had hit them, no evidence whatsoever. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Juddie
