i thought it was a 59 at first, then i saw the tuning keys on it. the bottom of the tulips, it has 2 little rings coming off of the bottom, the 59 only has one. but, it also has 59 knobs on it, so i guess there is no way of really telling haha
I think Gary was constantly buying guitars and then modifying them himself - he probably bought his one as a '59 and added the extra knob to give him more control I suppose....
