How To Surf From Scratch | Learn To Surf *switchfoot experiment*

  • Learning to surf has to be the easiest idea on paper, but the hardest one in practice. How to surf the switchfoot experiment came about because I’ve been surfing for 18 years and am, honestly, a natural footer, but today I'm going goofy.
I’ve been teaching for a long time now and I want to know if intellectually understanding the techniques that I talk about can be helpful in learning the sport.
Working with a total beginner won’t work because transferring those principles without actual kinaesthetic experience will take weeks or months to achieve. I’m going to try and shorten, hack the system by re-learning surfing in one day switch foot.

You should do a whole series like this. It'd be awesome to see your progression from beginner to intermediate.
Given how good you get in an hour it probs wouldn't take that long...🏄‍♂️🏄‍♀️🏄‍♂️

This is such a good idea. I feel like this is something I will benefit from. I've been catching waves, boogie boarding, body surfing and sucking at surfing my whole life. It will be good to see an expert go through the pain of learning the basics all over again.

It was so difficult!! Totally felt like a beginner again but even worse because of my strength ratios (being so much stronger and more comfortable doing the OPPOSITE thing). Thanks Jason!!

I love these videos. Greetings from Rockaway Beach, Queens, NYC. I'm a "rebeginner", and I was standing next to another beginner on the beach as we both moped about how hard our sessions were that day, and as we talked about some videos we both watch about surfing, we almost said in unison, "Kale Brock, right?" and laughed. As a squash player and coach, I've often tried to teach racquet technique by playing wrong handed, so I appreciate this video, as it shows what an advanced surfer does to compensate for lacking technique when there's a self-imposed handicap. You often ask what we'd like to see, so here's a request, albeit maybe difficult to satisfy since your wave conditions are so good there: do a video in which the waves are choppy, they come in at too frequent intervals, they have bad shape, the break seems to be in a different place each time, etc. In sum, how to make the best of shitty, choppy waves? You might say just don't go out on those occasions, and I don't know if I'm just reading the waves wrong, but Rockaway Beach doesn't seem to have the smooth waves I see in your videos. Yet, I know advanced surfers could obviously surf them. If you've already made such a video or know of a good one, please let me know. Thanks!

This is such a great way to get into the mind of a beginner. It's the same as writing with your non-dominant hand, or doing something as simple as brushing your teeth with the "wrong" hand; these things are learned skills and aren't as easy and straight forward to a beginner as they are to more experienced people! Great video.
PS. Goofy-footer here. Glad you joined the dark side for a day ;)

Thanks for this! This is something I've been forced into trying too. Question if I may - if you had left hip degeneration, so advanced that regular stance pop ups are painful (despite rehab and treatment) would you carry on learning goofy as it's your only option to surf? Or would you learn SUP instead?
PS- riding a Carver switch in a future vid?!

Funny how difficult it is, even for someone who teaches surfing. Way to put some fear into those groms you almost took out. I'm goofy footed and will occasionally turn around switch on my longboard but haven't tried popping up switch on my shortboard. Now I think I'll try it.

It‘s interesting to see how you are too far back on the board on your first popups, just like every beginner I‘ve ever seen. Despite the fact that your brain knows of course that the front leg has to swing through all the way, your butt comes up too high and your popup is short. That‘s crazy, I wouldn‘t have expected that. Great video, thanks!

Rach Grigg I kick a ball with left, throw with my right hand snowboard both ways, skate natural, surf natural but occasionally I just accidentally pop up into goofy for some brain haze reason.

Timely video!! I've been doing this for last season as a new project to keep my surfing exciting after 30 years in the water...except I'm going from Goofy to Regular. Liked that part where you explained how you already got the paddling and ocean knowledge but it's just the body mechanics needed to switch. Supposing you can ride a green wave switch on a longboard, what progression of boards do you suggest when transitioning to the ultimate goal of a shortboard?? Should one go with an Mid length Egg shape for more waves or an Oversized Shortboard to skip a step or two since you already know how to surf and have a level of fitness??
