Hey Omar, I’ve followed your set up guidance for my Fuji xt-20 going back probably 4 yrs, and here I am still following your guidance as I contemplate upgrading to the Nikon Z6III . Entertaining and informative, as always!
I still shoot with my z6 II but I have set my buttons up for me. You can set the user modes up for specific types of photography so that when you switch the modes it will automatically set the way you want it for that mode. You may have to to settings for milky way or go to settings for sports. I'm glad the z6 III is similar to the z8 because I really have that one set up. I wish they had used banks with it instead of use modes but the access to the user modes on a dial might be faster than going into the i menu to charge modes. One thing you didn't mention about back button focus is that it combines the use of single auto focus and continuous focus. Just tap the button once for single and hold it down for continuous. Once again, good video.
I just got my z6iii and this helped me so much!!! I also shoot events and live music and so many of your suggestions make so much sense. Especially custom buttons for autofocus. Changed those immediately!
I do use back button focus on my Z7 II as well, especially with larger lenses like my 180-600. Just feels a lot more stable! But! I do focus with the shutter button as well. At the zoo where I volunteer as staff photographer a lot of our critters, like our ruffed lemurs who I know for about 11 years now, always get very close to me and they usually sit on the ground. So to get shots on eye level I take the camera low to the ground and compose through the display. And from my experience using the shutter button to focus is a lot more comfortable when I do that.
@@ogonzillahello, I looked at your website and I really like the way you edit. In which software do you edit the Nikon raws? Do you have any tutorials, actions... that you can share/sell
Omar, you are the master of defining what the function buttons do. On the ZF I have the one and only function button set for DX mode. How can I set one of the function buttons (FN 1) on the Z6 3 to the DX mode?
Thank you so much for this video Omar. Now that I can finally consider upgrading from my Z5 to the Z6111, this set up video is priceless. I too appreciate your sense of humor and very relevant tips and tricks for us to use our gear more effectively. I think you are an amazing person and photographer. Keep on doing what you are doing here. God bless!
Keep the z5. I sold mine and regret it a lot. It’s got much better dynamic range for landscape photography and when you sell it you won’t get that much for it anyway
Great tips, Omar. I made most of these changes on my Z6 II, but you can't transfer them to the Z6 III via a card, so thank you for showing how to make the changes. Yes, please do a video on how to set up the camera's video mode.
Omar, you are a great help in setting preferences for the Z6 III. You learned to like the Z6 II but now like the z8. I appreciate your effort to help others to use the camera they buy. Dan
I give you great credit to remember all this while working.. I use the mode dial. Or a Leica, 3 controls, shutter,f stop, ISO, and be done. The more stuff you have to remember , the less I like the camera.
Hi Omar! Saludos desde Quebradillas, Puerto Rico! I love your videos. I was wondering if you've ever thought about using the HLG mode on your Nikons and perhaps post a video for those of us struggling to understand how and when to use and process it. I recently purchased a Nikon ZF and sometimes I wish that I could get some amazing HDR photos that look as good or better than what I can get on my iphone 15 pro max. I have been searching around but I can't seem to be able to find any tutorials or videos of people explaining the workflow or anything about Nikon's HLG mode at all. Thanks!
My AF setup is a little different but same basic idea--different buttons for 3D tracking, auto-AF box, and single point as last ditch effort. I mapped another button to activate AF cycle and then I turn with the dial to change--similar to yours. I wish there was a way to change the subject detection modes with a button + dial.
I'm really hoping Nikon offers a way to quickly toggle 3D tracking's subject recognition on/off. Too many times I had the tiny box go to someone or something I didn't want it to, because it thought I wanted person X to focus on, while I wanted person Y. Or object X and not person X nor Y... with the Z8 & Z9 this was easy. It's just software, there is no mechanical or ergonomic limitation to implement this on the Z6III. Just make it a possible toggle with a Fn button. I'm currently using a comparable half baked solution, by using 3D tracking with human face/eye recognition on as the main AF mode and one of the front Fn buttons set as toggle AF-C single point mode, when pressing. It's not a comfortable button to press often, but it's a last resort. Again, ideally this would be a "face/eye recognition off - toggle" button. So I can focus on a mic or a ring close to face, without the 3D tracking box getting drawn to the face/eyes close by. Ironically, you could do it much easier with the Z6II: use full AUTO area or smaller area face or eye recognition and enable the subject tracking (without recognizing eyes or faces) box with a tap of a button. But not on the Z6III. Which makes no sense. But of course, Z6II 3D/subject tracking can't come close to the abilities of the Z6III. Three steps forward, one step back I guess.
@@ogonzilla Which button I assign is hardly the problem. Multiple options, they all don't solve the thing the Z6III can't do that the Z6II could do somewhat less reliable.
At 4:17 you talk about setting the Record button to Activate the focus. I thought you use the AF-On button on the back for that. Not sure what you are activating with the Record.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I’m interested in the way you setup your z8 when you took it to Costa Rica for hybrid use, the settings you used, and if you had any thoughts on doing it differently if you could go back in time. Thank you for all your work in educating the masses!
Thank you Omar - I did not realize that we could set A10 so that the AF box goes green in AF-C. I thought this was left off like it had been in the Z6II and that is a bummer when I am also shooting with the Z8 and am so used to the AF-C box turning green now. This has been a double find for me as I also have the Zf and thought it also lacked this feature only to find that it too has this disabled in A10 - so now all my Nikons are operating the same, which is great! Thank you again! -PD

Omar- great vid. Clear & useful info. I have a Z6lll question as I am considering jumping into Mirrorless and will for quite some time be mixing a mirrorless camera with my existing D850 and D810. I just purchased a Tamron 150 to 600 F 5-6.3 lens which is allowing me to get shots at events. That normally would not be possible, but needs a great sensor for high ISO. By the specs, it seems like the Z6lll would be the best choice. Do you agree? Or feel the Z8 is still a better choice? From the little I’ve been using it. I can see that I’ll be at 6400 ISO to 12,008 or above in practical use often. Mostly on a mono pod. One last question - what Speedlights are you using with the Z’s? Past 3 yrs I’ve moved to Flashpoint/Godox Speedlights both for value and because they can work with my studio strobes. Does he Z6 have a problem with HSS shooting and Godox type lights?

When I get any new camera I like to get a handle on how WB, picture style, and all the baked in jpeg features line up best with my edited raw style. After a while, I turn off jpg
I also shoot Raw+jpg and 90% of the time I trash the jpgs later- but some events need pics uploaded quickly during the job and if I’m firing on all cylinders quite often, the JPEG‘s are perfectly acceptable for the quickly needed photos and later when I do my edit at home and process all the raw I can replace those for the high-res finals.

I didn’t help me at all-I shoot with a Sony RX100vii-but it was entertaining, thanks.🍎
Frustrating to see the progress, Nikon has made in interface design. 😂
I do miss some of the functions and options mentioned on my Z 5.
I really don't understand why some options are missing...
Great video .. thanx !
Thx. For the algorithm
Wow, you are an entertaining guy, but the camera is lucky the shutter button kept its position in life 😂
Whenever big changes are in order, you just bought a lemon.
RUclips world...
Omar: This is how I set it due to my use case. Be free, feel, and experience photography = Human intelligence and sensibility.
Birdiers (even more the ones that use Canon): Use it this way or get get out of my planet = Photography complete opposite.
jim cary wannabe is so much true!!!!!!😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
why shoot RAW + JPEG and not just RAW?
When I get any new camera I like to get a handle on how WB, picture style, and all the baked in jpeg features line up best with my edited raw style. After a while, I turn off jpg
I also shoot Raw+jpg and 90% of the time I trash the jpgs later- but some events need pics uploaded quickly during the job and if I’m firing on all cylinders quite often, the JPEG‘s are perfectly acceptable for the quickly needed photos and later when I do my edit at home and process all the raw I can replace those for the high-res finals.
Watched though I don’t have and don’t plan to get the camera :-)
Lots of information. Please slice it down to separate videos.
Dear Omar, too fast try to make it quit slow
You can slow down the video and also watch it multiple times and pause
Av Tv??? That's Canon... isn't it? Why Nikon??
Nikon has it right
