What Happened to College Football's LAST CINDERELLA Story... (The Rise of BYU Football)

- BYU football is an interesting team to watch. Over the past few decades, they have seemingly been able to punch above their weight class and achieve great things. They are considered to be college football's last Cinderella story after winning the 1984 National championship. They have always fought for the respect of the media and will finally get to prove themselves in a Power 5 conference this year when they join the Big 12. In this video, I go over the rise of BYU football and what makes their program so different.

How will BYU do in the Big 12 this year?
I predict they will finish with a 6-6 record.
4-8 or 5-7. It'll take a few years to get the depth. Your starters are good, but playing week in and week out will wear down players. Utah came in to the Pac and struggled for 4-5 years until they built the depth. BYU will likely go through the same struggles.
I predict that BYU will do its best to win as many games as possible!
3-9. Injuries are already piling up in fall camp and will only get worse when they meet 10 consecutive power 5 teams. A fully healthy team could win 10 games but depth will sink them.
@rjjohnson2402 every team in the Big 12 is beatable, except for Texas and Oklahoma, and even they aren't completely invincible.
As an Arkansas fan I'm looking forward to playing yall this year in Fayetteville. I went up there last year for the game. And B.Y.U. we're very gracious host. Even after the game. I have nothing but respect for the program after the game. Wishing you the best of luck this year.
It was fun to have the HOGS visit Provo last year! I enjoyed the fun banter and the good nature of the HOG fans! Thank you for your good wishes and Go Cougs and Hogs!!
Thanks for the well wishes!! It's always been a treat for BYU fans to have the Cougars plat power 5 opponents in the past...Now it will be an honor to line up against storied programs every week. Playing tough challenges against top competition as an underdog has always been the engine that has driven BYU to "Rise and Shout" in the past...can't wait for the next few years to that trend continue!!
That was a brutal game to watch. It was a well managed attack by your Arkansas squad. Glad you enjoyed your visit.
Everything had to go perfectly wrong at the very wrongest time for the hogs to lose. We (I'm a BYU fan) may not see you again for many years so kick some SEC tail my friends. Wooooo pig sui!
you lost
The other thing a lot of people forget to mention is not only did the huskies decline the bowl invite. They also came to provo the next season with 86% returning production, and were blown out by 30 points in then cougar stadium now lavelle edwards stadium.
Washington is 7-4 and possibly maybe even 8-4 over Brigham Young (they almost played in 2020). Coastal Carolina defeated Brigham Young. That might be Washington because Brigham Young substituted Coastal Carolina for Washington. F.W.I.W. that's 2/1. Oklahoma lost to Washington in the Orange Bowl.
BYU will improve in both defense and offense. They will shock the Big 12 and finish 8 - 4 for the season.
8-4 would be awesome. 4-8 is what will actually happen though.
@@bbqheavynuts That’s why you play the game. We shall see.
I'm thinking 6-6 - trying to stay realistic with expectations. Anything above that will be gravy from my standpoint. It'll be an adjustment for sure, year 1.
@@Paysoncougarfan.7885 actually we're realistic : not indoctrinated Mormon fan boys.
You R up in the big leagues now: no more Dixie state teams to pad the wins.
That's really not an unrealistic expectation, but it won't be easy. I see 5 games they should win, 3 games that are winnable, and 3 they shouldn't win. Just based on the law of averages in the Big12, they probably lose 1 they should win, lose 1 that is winnable, and win 1 they shouldn't win. So, a 7 - 4 regular season is possible. Then if they win their bowl game, they'll finish 8 - 4 in that scenario.
Following the Big12 (Big 8 before that) my entire life, one thing has become very clear over the last 10 to 15 years. At least one school that is expected to be at the bottom half will finish in the top half and at least one school expected to finish in the top half will finish in the bottom half. The Big12 really is wide open year to year and it's best to just expect the unexpected haha. This year is going to be fun and exciting for Big12 fans.
One note about the Sunday championships. The "BYU rule" was ratified, for the second time, by 150 schools in the early '90's. The rule is that if BYU or other religious schools who don't want to participate in sports on their sabbath qualify for a playoff or a championship game scheduled for that day, the NCAA will change the day.
The only time it was been put in effect with BYU was the women's soccer championship that was moved to Monday a couple of years ago ('21), and the BYU men's golf team plays an early round before other schools if they qualify for the championship--which always kills their chances, for some reason.
Anyway, championships on Sundays with other schools are not affected.
BYU rule is no play on Sundays period. That needs to be respected by all sports teams.
Nice recap, but it is BRIGHAM Young, not Bingham. I'm setting expectations for a 7-5 record in year 1 in the BIG12, but I am hoping for 8-9 wins.
And it is not BYA?
And Jason Buck's name was totally mispronounced. To the narrator..... Get things right before moving forward, geez!!!
@@daveb3904 back then (from 1875-1903) it used to be called BYA (Brigham Young Academy) until it reached university status.
@@daveb3904The school began as Brigham Young Academy, and was probably known as such in the Era the narrative was talking about.
Super excited to see BYU in Big12. Great move for both parties.
You gotta stop saying Bingham young 😂
The sheer volume of mispronunciations in this vid was astounding!
No , it's very accurate!
They’ll mess around and win some ridiculous game against ou, Texas, tcu or another team they have no business beating. Then they’ll follow it up by losing to the last place team 😂 its what we do
❤
Sure they will???
No offense, but LaVell Edwards didn't "implement" the west coast offense, he created it!
He devised the offense as a way for his team of smaller players to be able to compete against "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offenses of that era.
Once he showed the success of that offense, everyone else jumped on it.
Really grateful u r shining a light on the fact that Az St & BYU were the orig. 'Boise States.' And, for shallow Xenniels, Bobby Bowden modeled his then-nascent 1977 FSU fb progrum after Kush's ASU prog. - which had a very high win percentage.
As a BYU fan, I think a 6-6 record is a realistic expectation. Wins over: Sam houston, SUU, Iowa state, cincy, WV and Kansas. Hopefully they can push it to 7-5 with a win over Texas, but that’s my biased opinion bc I’ll be traveling to Austin for the game and want to see the cougars steal a win. In true BYU fashion however, they’ll probably lose 1-2 games they’re favored in and have 1-2 underdog wins. So perhaps a win over texas or Oklahoma isn’t a pipe dream. If it’s worth anything, Vegas has BYU’s win total at 5.5, so going 6-6 isn’t a stretch of the imagination
I believe BYU wins the home game against TT, so maybe 7 wins???
No way BYU beats the Jayhawks on the road.
😂😂
At what point does a "perennial" long time "Cinderella team" become a good enough team to not be a "Cinderella"?
Wow, you did a very nice and thorough analysis of BYU. Thank you!
Totally monotone voice! Put some energy into it for crying out loud. Same voice, with no real expression on every video you narrated, ever!
I'm from the future. BYU beats Sam Houston St 34-17, beats Southern Utah 41-7, loses to Arkansas 24-21, beats Kansas 33-21, beats Cincinnati 29-24, loses to TCU 38-20, loses to Texas Tech 45-16, loses to Texas 26-24, beats West Virginia 45-6, beats Iowa St 33-31 on a hail mary, beats Oklahoma 40-17, and loses to Oklahoma St 34-26. They then go to the Independence Bowl and beat Arizona St 26-17. When you all see this happen, you'll know that time travel is real.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Now that the bowl game prediction is wrong, do you want to travel back through time to see who byu might be playing?
😂😂😂😂
@@elche1976 Arizona St lifts their own bowl ban because the Big 12 threatens to cut their media rights share if they don't. (Duh.)
Well, this aged well.
Oklahoma Fan since 1956, you guys beat OU @ Norman and that takes some doing. Good luck
Actually, BYU has never played in Norman. They beat OU 31-6 in 1994 in the Copper Bowl in Tucson, then again in 2009 14-13 in the first college football game to be played in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
@@elwinjackson1818 when you were born in 1947 your memory plays tricks on a fellow. LOL THE point is BYU beat the Sooners and shocked folks that were not expecting it. I kept warning hem that BYU was no slouch. They beat my Sooners hands down
BYU will win 6 games in the regular season, barely becoming bowl eligable. They will then win their bowl game, and take the momentum into the following year, going 8-4.
No, with the great young men BYU has "MAGIC HAPPENS" and they do better then that! LOL
NICE TRY! 8-4 AT WORST!
@@TheKingSource😂😂😂.
@@TheKingSourcethis aged well.
The Ys defense will be better, The offensive will be good but needs new QB to rest of team coordination and plenty of practice. Both 1st and backup QBs are new to the system. I hope it will be a good to great season. Only time will tell. Can Klovis or Ratzlaff get the job done? Only time and practice will tell.
They will do better than projected.
Depth will be an issue, still. In the big12, there really is no letdown or easier games like sometimes was the case with scheduling as an independent.
1996 - Went 14-1 and finished with THE best record in all college football that year and STILL did not make any of the big bowl games. What they achieved that year was amazing. I believe 14 wins in a season still stands as a record.
Right, and I will never forgive Tostitos for their statement " We didnt think BYU brought enough to the table."
Great summary.
Not shade: Ty 4 bumping important WAC cfb history: As 1 who lived thru that time, tho, L. Edwards was elevated only AFTER Kush dipped out.💯
All day, this. 💯
Last year our defense was awful. We brought in Weber State DC Jay Hill, who lead a top 5 FCS defense. He brought along with him All-American CB Eddie Heckard and CB Kamden Garrett both from Weber. Tyler Batty returns as our best D Lineman, then Jay Hill also successfully brought in Boise State DTs Jackson Cravens and Isaiah Bagnah, Southern Utah DT Wyatt Dawe, and Snow College DT David Latu. We also brought in a safety from Utah State in Crew Wakley, and Southern Utah CB Dylan Flowers, and a JUCO corner Jayden Dunlap. Linebacker core still needed fixing becuase only Max Tooley and Ben Bywater were returning (both are really good just need depth) so he went out and got Utah States leading Tackler AJ Vongpachang and Oregon LB Harrison Taggert. The offense also improves. The OL gaps were filled with Utah Center Paul Maile, Utah State Guard Weylin Lupuaho, Missouri State OT Ian Fitzgerald, Oklahoma State OT Caleb Etienne, Weber State Guard Jake Eichorn, and Utah OT Simi Moala. The Runningback depth was fixed with the UNLV transfer Aiddan Robbins and Colorado back Deion Smith, We brought in Kedon Slovis from Pitt to play QB, and added reciever depth with Uconns Keelan Marrion and Eastern Michigans Darrius Lassiter. We also added Boise State kicker Will Ferrin to replace Jake Oldroyd. We return a bunch of key offensive pieces as well, like running backs Hinckey Rupati and Miles Davis, Wide Recievers Kody Epps, Keanu Hill, Chase Roberts, and Parker Kingston, Tight End Isaac Rex, and some offensive lineman including connor pay and Kingsley Suamataia. We could actually end being more than half decent this year.
Jay Hill was the HEAD Coach for FCS powerhouse Weber State, not their DC.
How was Steve Young not mentioned in this whole video?
He was!
I am sooooo freaking happy BYU is in the BIG 12! And happy the holy war has meaning again, more than ever actually!! PLEASE let us return to the McBride/ Edwards flavor of the rivalry. Competitive with playfully rude comments back and forth but not with the extremely toxic very personal attacks. This can and SHOULD be so much fun again! And here’s hoping the Utes actually win the national championship before entering the BIG 12 and engaging with the Cougars again in a meaningful way :)
“Brigham” is NOT spelled or pronounced “Bigham”. Where in the heck did that come from? That made the narration sound like a bot. Also, you got mixed up on a couple of dates toward the end but, overall, this summary is great! I have the BYU student newspapers reporting the football seasons of the late 1890’s to which you were spot on. Great job overall. Just correct the mispronunciation of “Brigham” and correct the date mistakes toward the end then this will be a collector’s video!
Good video 👍
"bingham young"
Cincinnati is the most recent Cinderella imo. First G5 to make the playoffs and at 4 teams even. Likely over now that fickell is gone, but man we’re those 2021 games a blast
They lost 21 starters off t hat team though. Tons and tons of roster turnover.
Noise State also comes to mind
Bro Cinderellas are teams that have won championships though. You made the have but didn't win. We did. That's why we're the last ones. After then the BCS was formed to keep mid majors out of the conversation entirely unless in a p5 conference. The pastor changed this one again and gave us all a break thinking teams like Cincinnati, BYU, Houston, boise, etc couldnt get in, but did.
I think they will have a winning season
Good job but be careful. Sounds like you are saying Bingham Young and the guys name is Jason Buck.
Hope to be proven wrong however BYU has played the cushy section of their schedule. Now it becomes brutal. 2-10 is a real possibility. Hope they can pull off a surprise or four of them. Cincy and Iowa St seemed like probable wins several weeks ago now I’m not sure. WVU? In. Morgantown. Don’t think so.
I look for a 9 win season.
BYu's going to surprise some teams. My prediction is also 8-4 with a decent bowl for once.
You shouldn't worry about how "decent" a bowl is if you end up losing them anways.
That's the same exact holier than thou attitude that USC had last year when they played Tulane.
They lose to Tulane and what does Caleb Williams say? "Meh, we didn't want to be there anyways."
@@77thNYSV Bowls are overrated. There are more bowls than not that feel more like participation trophies than anything else. I'd rather it got back to the 80's, where being in ANY bowl felt like a real accomplishment.
Oh they surprised teams. By laying down. Playing great tonight on their way to losing the last 5 to end the season.
@@elche1976 I had no idea that they would suck this badly. I was being optimistic
Jason Bike from Bingham Young?
TCU was a Cinderella last year nice video on BYU though
I have BYU going 8-4 AT WORST due to what games are in Provo. OU IS NOT WINNING IN PROVE WHERE THEY HAVE NEVER PLAYED and with how bad they have been recently.
At worst. 🙄 Bookmarked.
😂😂
@TheKingSource looking like 5-7 to me.
@TheKingSource this is entertaining. 5-7 is a bullseye.
2017 was the last college football Cinderella story. UCF
This dude saying 'Bingham Young' lol
Bingham Young?
Go Cougs!
Also, the LAST GREAT season of college football.
It all comes down to injuries for BYU. BYU has never been able to field a deep team. If the first string stays healthy 8-9 wins is believable, but a few key injuries and it could be a rough season
Eldon “40”, really?
Sounds like he doesn't really know the history at all. Probably just reading what someone else wrote for him!
Is this video AI-created? It is confusing video of Jim McMahon in the early 1980s while being told BYA played the YMCA in 1900.
*1984 National Champs
How does Buck become bike? The words you're mispronouncing are not brain teasers.
I could undrrstand if they were any of the storied Polynesians that have played at BYU, but c'mon!
I predict they'll go 5-7 with wins over SUU, Sam Houston, Cinci, WV, and either Kansas or Iowa State, but I don't think they'll get both. In true BYU fashion, I could see them getting a win over a team they have 0 business beating like Texas Tech or OKST but then they'll lose to a team they're supposed to beat
No, that's not how it will go at all. Stop being so pessimistic!!! Geez!!
@@darantibbetts84975-7 was spot on. Getting crushed tonight vs Iowa st and will lose vs Oklahoma and OKSt.

They haven't played good football since lavell
byu will be a perennial bottom feeder in the Big 12.
If not, give them at least 10 years to get their recruiting up to par because recruiting is horrendous.
Why do I say this?
Because no matter how much Big 12 money BYU gets, the LDS Church is not going to spend what they should spend to get better coaches. It's just not what the LDS Church is prioritizing.
They're not going to pay millions more dollars to get a HC and staff, so SItake is as good as it's going to get.
BYU is garbage, they won’t win a game in the new BIG 12
Go Utes !!!😂😂😂😂
💪Content: Wrong, tho, re 1970s WAC: The 2 Az schools dominated WAC cfb. BYU's late 70s-to-80s dynastic run started when? Right AFTER Frank Kush/ASU left. Look up the record, 1970-1977, BYU vs both Az schools: Not hypey 😂.
Times have changed! BYU dominates both Arizona schools.! And even if the Arizona's would have stayed in the wac, the outcomes would not have changed much.! BYU was a really good football team in the 80s and 90s.!!
@EmbracetheGrind Why are you so monotone when you do and narrating. You always make some mispronunciation multiple times. Your explanation of different things always are run together and seem like a rush to get the reading finished. Slow down a bit and make a real story out of things with every name pronounced 💯% correctly! I've noticed this in previous commentary articles. It shows that you haven't done your research before putting it together. If you want to grow, you have to be critiqued, otherwise things stay the same. Don't rush through things, just to get it finished. It really makes it boring and unlistenable. Be more creative in the story telling..... Please!
Oof 😂
Lmao
Please stop it. They will be lucky to finish 6-6.
I wouldn't say lucky. I would say most likely they finish 6-7/7-6. If you're not a casual football fan, then you know BYU has put together a good roster. They definitely have potential to do better.
@@grasm03 BYU
very quietly put together the #20 ranked transfer class in college football. Who knows if it will translate, but they have the potential to really turn some heads
They would have been 6-6 if they had held on to beat Oklahoma. Which they nearly did. Only losing in the closing minutes. Probably should have won.
You failed to mention how, Oklahoma won their Bowl game and ended up #2. Why did Oklahoma only reach #2, with a far superior schedule, a Bowl win against a far superior team than byu played?
Well...a year or two before, byu become the last D-1 school to have a student-athlete of color on scholarship. That title was a gift. Yeah, you failed to mention that. Only showing the "feel good story". Not showing the truth why they were gifted a Natty.
"Well...a year or two before, byu become the last D-1 school to have a student-athlete of color on scholarship. That title was a gift."
Do you have a source for this claim?
Washington, the #2 team, could have played us but went for the money and got stuffed in their bowl game. BYU played Washington, still butthurt and claiming the national title, the following year, and smacked them right in the mouth.
In 1984? Oklahoma lost to Washington in the Orange Bowl, they did not finish #2.
Only a zoob would think their team was "the last Cinderella story" but completely forget about Utah "THE ORIGINAL BCS BUSTER", Boise State and TCU. Must be because they could break the BCS? Haha, they went 12-1 in 2020 and didn't get an invite to a NY6 bowl game.
No doubt they owned the WAC but they didn't own the MWC, their Independence era was a joke and we will have to wait and see how their Big XII history goes?
Zoobs, still living in the past because their ancient history from last century is all they have. Hilarious.
Let's see. BYU had 3 outright MWC championships and one shared championship. Utah had 3 outright MWC championships and 1 shared championship, and TCU had three outright MWC championships. It will be fun seeing them all compete in the same conference again next year.
BYU has never won anything. They were given a "National Championship" in 1984 but never had to play anyone for it. Honestly, when was the last time or anytime they won a game of any real significance? Never played a BCS game never made the playoffs, Never made NY6. They are just a mid-major team playing in a big conference just like Rutgers, Vanderbilt and Washington State. A joke!
Child, please. BYU beat #3 Pitt n the road in 1984.
