I’ve been living in Marathon my entire life and it’s a little weird having a RUclipsr you’ve watched for a couple years move into your town but here’s some pointers: The bagel place you pointed out is good but also very packed. I believe the Tom Thumb gas station in front of Kmart has the lowest gas prices. The school is indeed the hurricane shelter but as a school it’s pretty corrupt. Sombrero beach usually closes at sunset. There is a boat ramp by you behind the airport but finding a place to park there could be a little tough. I can’t wait to see your future videos in Marathon, it’s very interesting looking at it from a different perspective.
Thanks for the awesome video. My wife and I are headed to key colony from Pennsylvania a week at the end of this month and this really helped see what to expect. Thanks so much 👍👍
Hi Steve, I used to winter over at a place that an older sibling and I had built in the late 1980s, on Copa D Oro off of Sombrero Rd. Your tour back back memories, as I had been fishing there since the early 80s. I am glad to see that the Marathon Lady is still around, but saddened to see that Ed Boland's Sportfisherman's Tackle Shop is gone, as is Perry's (I used to give the chef there yellow tail fillets, and he'd treat me to a meal every now and then). The old BK on RT 1 was a fixture there since at least 1981. There was also a Pizza Hut near there that closed sometime around 1985. Another great place to eat was the Grassy Key Dairy bar, which I am sure is long gone by now. One thing, please don't try running your 'yak out to the Marathon Hump (AKA the Magic Mountain). The 'Stream's current hitting that lump creates some pretty nasty seas at time. Great AJ and blackfin tuna fishing out there, though! I once dropped a nice tarpon off at the foot of that small bridge just west of the Marathon Lady's berth. Went to beach it and the hook fell out of its mouth once its head hit the shore, so we'll call it a self release.
Everybody hangs out at the Brass Monkey around the corner from the Winn Dixie. Been a few years since I have been down there but the beer was always super cold and most nights have live music. Right by the party boat Marathon Lady you should watch the mates clean the fish. Lots of tarpon and 3 or 4 big Bull Sharks hanging around fighting for the scraps. That is a show all in it's self. Love the shirts.
We got married in Marathon. Used to stay at the Seashell Beach Resort (mom & pop motel) at the 57.5 MM. That's when Leticia & Bill owned it. Private dock, beach area and we could take our dogs. Went down every year until we moved to SC. Sure miss island life. Thanks for the video. If Keys Fisheries is open, good food.
Glad to see your move went pretty smoothly. My last trip before covid was to a place a few steps from Sombrero. I'm curious though, what's up with those condos on the bayside of Vaca? You can see them at about 16:30 in this video. I like that location but have never seen any work going on there. Looking forward to seeing you get out on the water there! Tight lines!
Feels a little odd watching this, seeing as how I live here too :) but I enjoyed it. Always nice to see hometown from someone else's perspective. BTW, Marathon Bagel is not only fabulous but is BUSY!
I caught my first and only bonefish (7 lbs) on the northern side of the 7 mile bridge by pigeon key. The Vaca Key Cut is a really good spot for tarpon fishing, and so is the key colony beach inlet. Theres a charter there who chums mahi carcasses and catches tons of tarpon. We were just there for 2 weeks so we got a little bit of experience
When we drove down to Key West from Islamorada, there was an accident on the 7-mile bridge, and the traffic got really bad. It was a weekday too, which surprised me. I've gone to Islamorada several times, and it would be cool if you could either go fishing or do something on Islamorada as well. I'm surprised by the fact that there's a Home Depot on Marathon. Another thing that might be of interest to you, is 'The Rod Shop' in Islamorada. It's in this little strip mall type thing, next to the Whistle Stop café. (82685 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada, FL 33036, United States) if you're interested. They make good rods, and if you ever have any repairs that need to be made, to rods, in particular, it's a good place to stop. In Islamorada there's also Mangrove Mike's, they make great key lime shakes. (The best ones imo). Then, on the way out, in case you need tackle or ice, you can stop at the Tackle Center of Islamorada (82661 Overseas Hwy, Islamorada, FL 33036, United States), they have everything you need, and offer 2lb bags of ice for a better price than the Islamorada Fish Company, next to the World Wide Sportsman. Cheers!
Thanks Steve for the tour, enjoyed it. Hadn’t been in the area since the storm, looking great, very glad about that. Looking forward to viewing your fishing videos. I bid you continued success! Regards,
Kinda hate you're not in Key West anymore. However I'm sure Marathon will give you more options and it's a great place! Looking forward to watching your channel and business grow. Thanks for all the content you put out.
I remember when I was in my early 20’s, I was looking for homes in So Florida. Of course they were way cheaper back then. But for some reason, Marathon Fl kept popping up. At this time, I had no idea what the Florida keys were about. Nor did I care. The house prices were ranging from 85k to 175k. I was like, screw that! I don’t wanna live on an island. Boy did I ever screw that up! I’m in my mid 40s now and regret that decision. Mind you, I didn’t get to the Florida keys for the first time till I was about 38. So sad no one told me what a gem those islands are. Then again, no one around me was ever in the Florida keys. North east in nj especially the urban areas people only know big cities.
You didn't screw up. The same time frame I saw 15K ski condos in Durango Colorado & in Kona HI i saw 45k beach view condos. Crap just goes up in certain places. 1500 dollars in dell computers in 1990 was worth 15 million 10 years later in 2000 and worth 7 million in 2001. Hind sight is a bitch.
That's where we plan on moving in the next 2 year's. Nice video. Congrats on the move!! Miss being in Marathon, last year we stayed there for 3.5 weeks. GOOD times!!
Love it. Sad that Key West is being purged from CoVid but excited to see your new adventures. Joe, my boyfriend and producer who use to see u at the post office in KW from time to time says Hello, and keep rockin it!!
Really enjoyed the video. I had the pleasure of living there on my boat in Boot Key Harbor for a couple of years. No car and biked everywhere. Hoped you would show Castaways and Burdines and City Marina. I plan to visit this winter if the political craziness settles down. Lots of fond memories. I am subscribing to see more. Great work !
I recognized Captain Hooks, my son has done a few dive trips with them and they used ti have a nice pond at the front of the building with nurse sharks, tarpon, tropical fish, eels, etc that they fed daily, fun to watch. They also have bait and tackle. There was a whale shark that showed up in Vaca Cut near Captain Hooks, I think it was in about June or July 2010.
Hello steve, congrats on your new home btw I love marathon my family & I go down there every year. We love it, but I personally believe that you’re going to miss those roosters 🐓 singing to you 😂 👍🙏🇨🇺
Man I love the Keys!! Last year I bought oats from that Dollar Tree,Went to that Post Office and Stayed at Siesta motel. I lived on Vaca Cut as a toddler. Thought you would show it but, Gotta Love the Captain Hooks SaltWater fish display ponds! Cant wait to see how you fish and Lobster the area, you know I will snag a few techniques.
I used to live on Marathon Key right next to the HS on Man O War drive! I would take our 16 foot bayliner over to sombrero beach and out fishing & snorkeling regularly. I was only 16 at the time so a lot has changed but the Marathon Lady party boat is highly recommended if you dont have your own boat. It used to be $20 half day and they will bait your hook, remove the fish (if you need that done for you) and keep whatever you want to keep (legally) and then clean them for a small fee once you return to shore. Definitely had a few amazing trips catching delicious yellow snapper and even caught an almost record size red grouper that we ate that night and it was the best fish I ever had hands down. The wooden spoon is a must go breakfast spot. I am not sure who owns it now but my grandpas good friend owned it before he passed away. I just checked recently and it is still open and still over 1k five star reviews. The air port is kind of an eye sore as the island is so small but it also comes in clutch if you need to get from Miami to Marathon ASAP. When I flew down to the keys I caught a little two seater flight from Miami international to Marathon airport and I sat right next to the pilot the whole flight which was absolutely amazing and slightly terrifying lol. I never thought anyone actually used the airport until I landed there that day. Was pretty damn cool to say the least especially seeing the keys from above the entire way from Miami. I was so used to driving it and the perspective is so unique. The water and islands are so beautiful. Marathon is an awesome place to live and I enjoyed the year of high school I spent down there. Definitely have been telling my G/F we need to make an RV trip down there and spend a good week exploring and checking out the places I once knew as a teenager. If I had the money/means I would definitely buy a house down there. Its a different style of living and an immensely beautiful place especially if you love the ocean as much as I do. I was pretty shy back then and wasnt good at making friends. I spent more time in the ocean exploring than I did hanging out with other kids. Awesome video my friend thank you for bringing back some memories. The high school looks SOOOOO different than what I remember. 16 years ago, man time flies!
Love the Florida Keys lived in South Florida most of my life growing up love fishing keys are the best place in America to fish wish I was living there again
Ex-Key West local now living on the main land in Palm Beach County. We still go to KW and Marathon but post Irma, Marathon is like a damn ghost town. So many empty businesses and run down locals. It's sad but the way of the world. Still nice to stay at Capt. Pips for boat rentals that allow access to both Atlantic and gulf sides. Lower Keyes will always be our home away from home no matter where we live. Best of luck Steve on the new HQ.
Big big fan of yours , my husband and I are big fishing people too so we love learning from you , we would love if you could show us some good fishing tips one day in person, it be amazing to charter with you , we live in north Florida
Great video. We usually make an interim stop in Islamorada for 2-3 nights on our annual trek to Key West, but your windshield tour of Marathon has me considering a stop there now instead.
Good tour...thanks for the trip; haven't seen Marathon like that for some time. Specialty Hardware was always the best. Kmart looks the same. Vaca Cut is still cool. Flew into the airport on DC-3 multiple times. Lived at Pelican trailer park in Grassy key. Walked across us1 thru the forest to the ocean flats and would spend hours fishing the flats. Or Toms harbor bridge. Or took the 24 Stamas to the ocean. The Keys will start "booming" after the plague goes away.
I want to move back to the keys SO badly. As I said, I lived in Tavernier, Islamorada and Tavernier. For a total of 5 years. I had a hot dog cart in front of Holiday Isle!🥰
@@randyellis3094 We stayed in one of their more expensive rooms right at dockside and it was very nice. They also have smaller, older units closer to the road.
Hello!! I just found your channel again, I watched a lot of your videos two years back. Your videos are still lovely, I am so happy I found your channel again! 😄 Hope you are well!
Hey Steve I'm Pete, nice tour video. I'll be going to the keys in July. Hey I just purchased a fishing hoodie from your store. Hopefully I'll get it soon I need it.
I love your videos! Didn't know you are in marathon. I'm in marathon for vacation right now. Wish I would have hit you up before we came down here. The place I'm staying has two sketchy pelican kayaks, and I didn't want to take them out to fish. Ended up fishing long key state park, and no name key. I thought there would be more flats to wander around and cast artificials. The cold front tonight seemed to shut em down!
Lots of Churches....Any POPEYE'S? HAHAHA You'll be getting lots of parking tickets, or even towed. Marathon is unfriendly to parking anywhere for fishing. Kayaking through Vaca, can be a whitewater experience. Pretty wierd to see a neighborhood I'm familiar with on a video tour. It's nice to see you getting up and running. Holding my breath for more videos.
Thank you so much ...I'm from Florida.....use to go to the keys all the time.... hoping to move back and this video shows me its a possibility. You know where those kids were riding bikes in that neighborhood right on the Atlantic? Can they just go swimming right there where the road ends? Again thank you for showing the back roads with no tourists! Lol How about a Key Largo one?!
funny i live right down the road lol Best bait shop is Marathon bait and tackle BTW JW is a great guy to talk to he will also give you a 15% discount everything since youre now a local i live right across from aviation blv boat ranp
There’s a great little marina my dad used to run years ago just south East of ya just past the Dolphin research center you could put in there and fish the Toms Harbour are we used to do well there with Tarpon
I have been there many if times it was my first place I stayed in the Keys. We have been going by here for 12 years now. Great place we will be there in September
Drove by the most important thing on the island. The new Baptist Fishermens Hospital. I'm helping build it. Myself and two of my coworkers are big fans and can't wait to see your future fishing videos in Marathon.
first time I visited the Keys I booked my hotel too late to get anything I could afford in Key West. I wound up staying in Key Colony Beach. Ate at that McDonalds for breakfast every morning on the way to Key West with my best girl at the time. Fun memories.
Thanks for the great drive around your new home key. Question from a viewer here in Australia: Do you require number plates to the front of your vehicles ( just that it seemed from you vlog that your vehicles over there only have them on the rear 👀) Cheers 👍
Oddly you said that is the Gulf side, but also said that is the Atlantic Ocean out there on the same side. I know it was probably just a slip of the tongue. I used to live in Key Largo and work Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West. I am familiar with most of it all. There used to be good fried chicken at the Mobil/Quick Chik on the Atlantic side upper end of the 7-Mile Bridge, when I used to stay at Knight's Key Campground with my boat, (which is no longer). They had their own Atlantic side boat ramp, straight access to Sombrero Reef Tower.
Great Vid ! ....... Had to get Google Earth out to trace your steps ! ...... Nice tour . Walking distance to that Cut is nice ! ...... Can't wait for you to get your Pole Wet ! Cheers !
you can fish from the bank. Not from the bridge. But good area to survive. Everything is within walking, biking distance. And Circle K has fresh ground coffee.
@@codyjones5280 it was absolutely amazing, and I can’t wait to go back! Stayed at a friends place right on the water and got to go deep sea fishing for the first time and caught some amazing fish. Looking forward to heading back down as soon as I can!
New Sub! Thank you for the video! My family and I are praying about potentially moving from South Arkansas to Marathon. This video is an incredible resource. I may reach out to you for more info! Blessings.
Steve, why not buy White Marlin Marina????Look it up. It's there north/east of you in Marathon. Awesome piece of property!!!! That's what I thought you were taking us at first:)....jv
If you haven't yet I recommend checking out Herbie's Bar and Chowder House, you pass by on the right hand side at 28:22 Best key lime pie I've found yet, and great sandwiches and specials. I'm not a big fan of chowder so I can't really speak for that, LOL!
Jackson Porterfield, bruh, he found that thing under the bridge and in the salt water. Everything is rusted and that probably what hold the bike together 🤣🤣.
Yes, I know right? It's best to avoid the keys early morning, and early evening, best time around lunchtime, if you need anything, and certainly weekends or any other national holiday, like the 4th of July, where everybody and their brother decide to come down.
Is Sombrero beach park still closed? Coming down in April for our yearly trip and bringing 4 granddaughters with me. We usually hit the park for an hour or so when they get tired of the pool and boat. Good luck in marathon
, I miss the keys bad when I was young we used to stay down there during the summer at Big Pine growing up Sunshine Key had some private rich guy charters but they were wimps couldn't fish the way I wanted to met a man from Rotunda Florida Jack Tapscott and he took care of me for 15 years spend three months a year at Knights key catching dolphin blue marlin grouper tilefish come in at night run to Herbie's for some good conch chowder breakfast in the morning at the stuffed pig and fishing gear and reports at The Tackle Box different owners now but the triple D offshore lures were awesome back then last time there was two years ago stayed at Coconut Cay Resort next to the airport very nice great crew working there
I'm loading up my Camper and taking a road trip from California to the Keys, hopefully in late October/November. If anyone has any tips on where to camp and beach fish I would appreciate it. Thanks for the tour!
ever meet Scotty who lives on his sailboat off of wisteria island aka christmas tree island? i had a houseboat there moored back in the early 90.s... (navy-scotty)
Sweet I stay like 1/2 mile away from you now I'm just going to come knock on your door when I need more paddle tails lol. Dont forget to hit up the 7mile boat launch at night tons of juvenile tarpon
Hey neighbor, I live on 27th st. See you soon night fishing at vaca (or @ the dollar tree) if you haven't checked out the pagoda park at 7mile, that's also a good night fishing spot for tarpon (incoming tide)

Sombrero is such a pretty place too...I cant wait to see him go between it and boot key
Usually? Sombrero at sunset involves asshole cops on bullhorns screaming you're going to go to jail if you don't leave. Total assholes.
i just visited the Keys a week before the hurricane and was told by a few that i was welcome but not to stay! lol True story
Fr I’m thinking the same I live in marathon to and it’s pretty cool😂
"... but as a school it's pretty corrupt." What do you mean by that? The school system? The students? In what way? Thanks!
Hey Steve, I’m a marathon local/kayak fisher as well, cool to see my island on video. You caught me in this video pumping gas at 35:11 !
Yup, It's so cool to be caught on a u-tubers video.
$2 a gallon , up here in canada its about $8 a gallon

Marathon Bagel Company is AMAZING. 🤤
The bagel shop is amazing. I live in marathon.
I hope to be there eventually trying to get on with the FWC down there how would you say living in marathon is I was told it can get expensive.
Been to the Keys many times and I love the Vibe

I was just there in June, stayed at Coconut Cay Motel. They have a boat ramp where you might launch if you sweet talk them.
Is that a decent Motel? I see they have good pricing.
I was in Marathon for 3 nights back in November, 2019. Thanks for the memories. We stayed at the Coconut Cay.
I used to live one street over about 10 years ago man has it changed .
Some good kayak fishing on the west side of boot key, look for the wheel ditch channel into the trap yards , kind of hidden in the mangroves......
Nice video! I didn't see my car at the home depot, you probably did this video on Tue or Wed when I'm off,
I love your videos!
HAHAHA
You'll be getting lots of parking tickets, or even towed. Marathon is unfriendly to parking anywhere for fishing. Kayaking through Vaca, can be a whitewater experience. Pretty wierd to see a neighborhood I'm familiar with on a video tour.
It's nice to see you getting up and running. Holding my breath for more videos.
Looks like a great new home!
I used to live in Marathon. I left right before hurricane Andrew. There is way to many buildings there now. Miss it and all the Keys.
Damn Steve your kayak engine sounds better than your bikes 😂
funny i live right down the road lol Best bait shop is Marathon bait and tackle BTW JW is a great guy to talk to he will also give you a 15% discount everything since youre now a local i live right across from aviation blv boat ranp
Very nice. Been looking forward to seeing the new locale. Tight lines mate.
We'll be down there this Thursday - Tuesday. Swordfish trip with Munster! Maybe see you around or on the water.
I bought a place on Marathon also , Royal plum Club. I love it
FYI. There is no Marathon Key. It's the City of Marathon on Vaca Key.
This is why nobody loves you.
@@OtakuRalliart RIGHT!!!??!! IVE stayed in Marathon a couple times. This would piss my aunt off who lived on Marathon for 14years
There’s a great little marina my dad used to run years ago just south East of ya just past the Dolphin research center you could put in there and fish the Toms Harbour are we used to do well there with Tarpon
Was that Tom's Cut? We used to fish with Capt. Ron (Trobis) on his boat, Desiré. Awesome captain.
I have been there many if times it was my first place I stayed in the Keys. We have been going by here for 12 years now. Great place we will be there in September
I’d already have my belongings packed to move back to Key West. I hope the fishing is as good!
Question from a viewer here in Australia: Do you require number plates to the front of your vehicles ( just that it seemed from you vlog that your vehicles over there only have them on the rear 👀)
Cheers 👍
Most states, especially Florida don't require a front plate.
Cheers !
No fishing from Vaca bridge! So I was told, by the man!
you can fish from the bank. Not from the bridge. But good area to survive. Everything is within walking, biking distance. And Circle K has fresh ground coffee.
Nice tour...looks like a quiet change from busy key west...but I'm lookin forward to your fishin explorations ..
The high school really grew, was one story when I went there, I wonder if it still includes the middle school & community college at night.
Correct me if I'm wrong, But I always thought Marathon was a city and it was located on Vaca Key.
I can't believe all the locals didn't correct this. There is no Marathon Key. Haha. It is Key Vaca.
@@SharonRD1 must've a lot of cows on the island at one point.
Heading down to Marathon on Monday for a week and I can’t wait!!
How was your trip?? I'm headed there at the end of the month for a week 👍
Blessings.
Great video. Thanks for all the info, Keep them coming. Take Care
We are hoping to get there soon and what a great way to see it thank you
Brings back memories! thx
Finally!!! Hope you got a lot done!!! 👊😎❤
Man that looks like a ghost town in a lot of places you toured. I wonder what the year round population is.
Off season and covid....but I like ghost town with no tourists lol
Thanks for the tour.
love Sombrero Breach and also eating at Porky"s Bayside
Steve, why not buy White Marlin Marina????Look it up. It's there north/east of you in Marathon. Awesome piece of property!!!! That's what I thought you were taking us at first:)....jv
This is cool like your catch and cook videos out in nature
They have Ethanol free Gas at the Valero Next to the Siesta Motel
If you haven't yet I recommend checking out Herbie's Bar and Chowder House, you pass by on the right hand side at 28:22 Best key lime pie I've found yet, and great sandwiches and specials. I'm not a big fan of chowder so I can't really speak for that, LOL!
Steve please tighten the spokes on your bike.
Thank you.
Jackson Porterfield, bruh, he found that thing under the bridge and in the salt water. Everything is rusted and that probably what hold the bike together 🤣🤣.
I miss when he used to do catch and cooks
That's a lot of Irma damage almost 3 years later! Also I've never seen the highway so free of cars in the middle of the day.
Yes, I know right? It's best to avoid the keys early morning, and early evening, best time around lunchtime, if you need anything, and certainly weekends or any other national holiday, like the 4th of July, where everybody and their brother decide to come down.
It's off season and covid
Miss you Marathon💖
ever meet Scotty who lives on his sailboat off of wisteria island aka christmas tree island? i had a houseboat there moored back in the early 90.s... (navy-scotty)
47:42 Yes, it is your hurricane shelter. Good guess.
My girlfriend and i where thinking to go do some bridge fishing tomorrow at key largo or marathon but we’re a lil bit far naples fl!
Great tour! Thanks!
