    I think Sega/RGG Studios has some weird lack of confidence in their newer beat'em up-titles. Yokoyama stated in an interview with Automaton that he wasn't confident in Gaiden's sales when it was coming out, cause of story-length and comparisons to IW. But then, Gaiden apparently doubled the team's sales expectations.

      It's peak RGG brawler gameplay. By miles. It's not even a contest, really. But otherwise? Eh, it's up there but not the very best of RGG. The story has good elements, as all Yakuza games do, but it's sort of all over the place and in the end fails to make it's point effectively, as all the Kuwana did nothing wrong memes prove. The music is obviously fantastic, and if it's anyone's favourite I won't argue but honestly I couldn't pick a best Yakuza soundtrack. It's definetely top 5 though.The open world is I guess up to preference, I like the minigames but I think in terms of Yakuza open worlds, after a certain point, less is more, y'know? Yokohama is way too big, I much prererred the smaller but way more dense worlds of previous games, and sure, for 7 it fit because it's an RPG, but LJ isn't. And honestly my biggest problem with it is just that it's too long. That might sound like a weird complaint but I really think density is one of the most important aspects of a piece of art, and Lost Judgment very much feels like it's spread thin. If the whole game was >10 hours shorter I'd probably love it way more than I do now. Sure, bad pacing is probably the second most consistent RGG trait right behind being inconsistent, but it's especially bad in LJ. Though this is all coming from a person who plays games for the 'narrative' (sort of the wrong word because a game can be a rich aesthetic and emotional experienfe without a detailed narrative but I also didn't want to say I don't play games for the gameplay because the gameplay is an important part of a game as a complete art piece) hence my hung-uppedness over pacing and bloat which someone who's there to beat up dudes might rightfully not give much of a shit about. And if you do play games primarily just for the gameplay then yeah, LJ is probably the best.

    I've once come across someone who was mad about Gaiden's combat because he claimed you couldn't juggle enemies.. @Badshah044 4 месяца назад +9

      while not a huge issue for me, gaiden having a 6 second juggle limit was definite a sour point for the hardcore combat fans, and understandably esp after the crazy bar LJ set in terms of combo potential.. that said, gaiden's mob/crowd fighting was definitely a high point in the series thanks to aggressive enemies and huge mobs you fight

      My biggest issue is that Agent is pretty crap, especially against bosses. You can tell considering the relief once Kiryu regains the Oryu style from 6 fighting against Shishido.
      On top of that, only 2 of the 4 gadgets have any use to them (i.e. Spider and Serpent). It is only useful for the limited juggles that only lasts 6 seconds. I would rather have a damage dropoff if that means I can hit the boss longer, as opposed to only allowing 6 seconds of juggling with a constant damage value.
      Most people would just use the Yakuza style (even if the style is way too slow).

    In case anyone watching this video thinks that Judgment and Lost Judgment are actually frequently mentioned (youtube works in mysterious ways) then you don't need to go any further than to try and find kaito dlc stuff on the internet.
    For example, there is an upgrade called "Cross Strike", that allows you to charge 3rd attack in rush combo in Tank style (I don't remember whether Kiryu had this move in 0 or Kiwami 1, but Saejima definitely had it in 5). The button combination says "Hold light attack after light attack". Well that obviously isnt input for 3rd attack, so I thought it was just a notion that you can now charge attacks. You can't.
    I spent around 15 minutes trying to figure out how to proc it or at least find how it looks on the internet. There wasn't a single mention of this attack except in text guide on all kaito upgrades on gamespot. In the end, I found someone executing this attack in a kaito juggle combo video, where someone in the comments asked how to do this charged attack. And it was indeed "Hold light attack after light attack". So you ever press light attack twice to do three attacks. That's quite dumb imo but the point is if not for that random juggle video and that comment I would probably never figure out how to execute it, simply because there is literally no one talking about it.

    Gaiden and Infinite Wealth's release window was insane for me because Gaiden released THE DAY I was set to travel to another state for a couple days, and Infinite Wealth released two days before I had to go to a Wrestling show a couple hours away. Only played like the first hour or two of both. It's no big deal but hilarious each game released in the time frame I was traveling somewhere lol.

    Man I am so glad you made this video. Judgment and Lost Judgment constantly get thrown out of the conversation when talking about the LAD franchise generally, and then Gaiden… man. Gaiden is constantly treated as this 4 hour long mediocre game even though it is basically as long as Yakuza 6 AND is better in literally every single way - soundtrack, side content, story, graphics, gameplay, EVERYTHING.
    Glad to see you informing the community how good these games are and how massively Sega and RGG fumbled the bag marketing them.

      @Luhyn 4 месяца назад +3

      Kiryu started as an edgy hard-boiled character in the first game, only later RGG really embraced his goofy side. strength-wise, he's pretty much a Gary Stu. he's super powerful for no reason. Yagami, on the other hand, has a bunch of emotional moments in JE that characterize him a lot more than Kiryu is in multiple games, and Yagami also gets beaten up all the time though the story. him not being an untouchable master like Kiryu makes his battles a lot more compelling.

    I was one of those who started the series with Like a Dragon. The next one was Gaiden. I'm a Game Pass subscriber, so the cost was a non issue for me. But it also it made me buy Infinite Wealth, so if RGG saw this game as a Zone of the Enders-style, just buy it for a peek at the next big thing, it sure as hell worked.
    And, even though I hadn't played all the Kiryu centric games beforehand, the ending made me cry as if I had actually played them. Color me impressed.

    Gaiden is very competent in some ways, especially in gameplay and side content, but even with its brief story there's still a decent amount of padding in the main story. Akame kinda felt tacked on, as if they didn't really exist within the same space as the game's other characters. I enjoyed many of the other characters. I greatly enjoyed the story otherwise, when the story was actually moving along, but I deliberately waited to play the game until two weeks before Yakuza 8 released. Incidentally that was also because I imported a physical, English language edition through PlayAsia that ended up heavily delayed. The issue is that in playing Yakuza 8 shortly after Gaiden, I quickly realized just how little of an influence Gaiden had on Yakuza 8 given their development cycles. Yakuza 8's story (namely Hanawa and the Daidoji) felt like a major rug-pull for Gaiden in that regard, with Gaiden's story still being worthwhile in its finale but otherwise doomed to remain inconsequential. Gaiden teases out some interesting ideas and threads that got cut off by 8.
    I know they probably aren't going to stop doing this, but the other nail to Gaiden and perhaps one day Judgment is their reliance on likeness characters. When they insist upon using likenesses of real people for characters, that constrains their ability to have those characters persist and grow across multiple games. Case in point, Hamura in Judgment and Tanimura in Yakuza 4. Getting Kimura back from Judgment 3 is probably the main hangup there. I'm sort of primed now to suspect that whenever a real person's likeness is used in this franchise, they'll probably only be around for one game so I shouldn't get too invested.
    Edit: Also my exercise playlist is jokingly called "Sex Playlist" and its entirely songs from RGG games so i feel called out

    Gaiden's story was better than infinite wealth, i think it's a shame infinite wealth treats it like it never happened, even the friendship kiryu and hanawa developed during gaiden wasn't present as i expected it would be.
    I'm aware gaiden was made after infinite wealth therefore they probably didn't consider it when writing infinite wealth, but i wish they had put more thought into it during its development.

  • @X_Lord_of_the_Night
    @X_Lord_of_the_Night 3 месяца назад

    I cannot express how much i appreciate Gaiden, the heavy focus in the story, Kiryu's character and emotions are probably one of the best on the series, personally i think he is better worked here than in Infinite wealth. Then you add the brawler formula, plus style switching and you have one of the best games of the franchise (in my opinion), the only shame is that is not much lenghty, but otherwise it's an incredible experience.

    The Judgement games are the only brawler Yakuza games I've fully replayed through multiple times. They definitely hit different in the best possible way. I think the 0-6 storyline has a bigger impact IMO simply due to its breadth and size, but I still to this day think Judgement is the best standalone story RGG has ever done. After that, you get into the standard affair of Lost Judgement being the best brawler gameplay has been, and you get Gaiden basically being an honorary Judgement game with the obvious Yagami reuse.

    Honestly my only real complaint with Gaiden (which didn’t even occur while playing, some guy mentioned it and then it clicked for me) is the fact that Akiyama would’ve totally been working with the Omi to find Kiryu, especially since Akiyama’s part of the Yakuza 5 finale has the entire Omi (including Watase) bowing to Akiyama (haven’t gotten around to IW yet so if this gets contradicted and I look like a bumbling oaf don’t get too specific with it)
