- Yakuza 0, the game that single-handedly skyrocketed the declining popularity of the franchise in the west to the level that it's at today, which finally allowed for things like simultaneous worldwide releases, rather than having to wait the usual 1-3 years. I also played a lot of Warzone 1 Resurgence.

If it wasn’t for Yakuza 0, I wouldn’t have played Yakuza 1 through 7.
And for that it will forever be my favorite Yakuza game.
Same
yakuza 0's biggest flaw is that it's better than the next 7 (soon to be 8) yakuza games.
That and no akiyama.
The irony is that there would be no playing "1 through 7" without 0. I heard 0 was an "aww fuck it" game for RGG / SEGA. The series was in a weird in a weird spot after the meh 3 and 4 and their "GTA San Andreas" project 5 (2012) and the Kenzan (2008) and Ishin (2014) spin-offs. Kenzan is important because its battle system chances ruined Y3 with enemies blocking everything and / or having tons hyper armor moves you cannot do much against. They fixed it significantly for 4 (2010), though it still had plenty of the issues remaining. 0 still had the issue of having no way to break a block, a thing that was eventually solved by adding a chargeable block-breaker move. OT: the particularly annoying part of 4's fighting is the dedicated grabbing enemies. They will keep grabbing you to the point you cannot get a jab in before they are already re-grabbing you.
@@harrylane4 EDIT: The hours - 350 to Y Zero (100%, took six weeks), sub-200 on Y1 Kiwami (perfected), a little over 100 on Y2K and almost 100 on Y3 and Y4 each.
The funny thing about 0 is that is a lot like Y3 in its environment design - no underground, rooftops or in-building spaces that Y4 (2010) added even though it uses the tinkered Y5's engine. In many ways 0 was a step back feature-wise. Luckily they relented on the trashy political nonsense plots that ruined the premises of Y3 and Y4. Y4 is basically a collection of plot holes. So considering the steep downhill plot-wise the series was going, I don't know how they managed to make up a plot that was decent for a change. The last time they had a great plot was Yakuza 2. 3 and 4 have terrible plots and character portrayals.
How many hours did you put into all these games? It’s so daunting for me to even think about it 😅
Yakuza 0 is like the gateway drug for the Yakuza series
It is because of Majima-chan :)
The more I played the "previous" games the more zero made sense and felt unique.
Did you play 0 first or did you play it after 5?
Shouldn't you say the "later" games?
@@frenchfriesfan2005no as OP is probably referring to yakuza 1-5 which released before yakuza 0, ie they were previous to yakuza 0

The worst thing about y0 is it sets your expectations for the rest of the series really high. A masterpiece
i mean the rest of the series is still spectacular
Newer games meet those expectations. It's just 1-5 that are consistently mid

I really liked the story of Yakuza 2 though. @@amitojsingh7583

Glad the soundtrack got some recognition here, it really is just that good.
Koi No Disco Queen is a personal favorite for me.
yooo a fellow disco queen enjoyer. I know people know Friday Night the most (it's still a good bop) but Koi no Disco Queen is my personal favourite.
Like I said on the 10-minute upload: Bold of RGG to expect I'd be scrambling to find music CDs in Y7 when they left the best one on the piano for free.
Koi no Disco Queen is upbeat from start to finish. It rules. I mean what is the point of a 90-second disco song if only the last 20 seconds have anything going for it (I’m Gonna Make Her Mine) or has super brief upbeat segments (Queen of the Passion).
like so many others, 0 was the game that got me into the series in 2018 and I will forever appreciate the story and how it's expanse of Nishiki broke my heart during Kiwami. Majima's and Makoto's story especially is one of my favorite storylines ever

Dragon Engine is pretty cool and all, but man I just love how the graphics look in Yakuza 0, Kiwami 1 and the original Ishin.
i always found that kiryu's hair looked really weird in kiwami 1
Yakuza 0 aka the definitive way to get into the series.
I hope you never complained about anything in any other Yakuza game.

The minigames are some of the best in the series. Especially the hostess club. I am not a game designer but that minigame is so perfectly balanced. Doing well enough to invoke Fever Time does happy things to my brain.
yakuza 0 was my first
My first was a woman but I suppose it's okay to love whoever you want to love :)

The hours of my life lost to the hostess mini game was time well spent tbh. “I wanna be your girlllll ohhhmmmhmmm” was my ringtone for years.
This is easily one of my most favourite games of all time. I've already spent over 130 hours on this.

i love the focus on the localization team and how much love and work they pour into it. so grateful for this series and the legendary teams behind it! ♡
yakuza 0 was my entry point just a little over a year ago, now I own the games from 0-7, judgment on steam, and played kurohyou 1, this franchise is fucking amazing and it has a special place in my heart.
In 2020, I saw the Baki Mitai meme, then Ray started playing it on Twitch. Since then I've 100% every game in the series(Completion and Achievements). available on Xbox This game unironically changed my life.
Yakuza 0 was the game that made me fall back in love with playing video games. The soundtrack is flawless. A true testament to the composers skills when some of the best tracks are found in the mini games.
This video lo key making me regret flogging my ps4 away for drugs lol
Yakuza 0 was the start of a whole... 'era' for me. From blowing through all the games to even going on multiple trips to Japan because of the series (mainly 5 making me want to go back to see every irl counterpart of the cities in game lol) and it was all because of the video Dunkey uploaded on 0 way back in 2017...
Okay, but that "KIRYU-CHAN" at the end is iconic and perfectly placed
Y0 waa the first game that got me hooked into the series. I think it was a combo of everyone posting Nugget on twitter and having seen Kiryu and Majima in Project X-Zone 2 (oddly enough lol) to have me buy it. Still one of my favorites in the series as well.
Love yakuza 0. Only real problem is all of your abilities being hidden behind the fairly tedious business management side stories. I don’t even dislike the business management, it’s just not what I’m playing the game for. It would be like if you had to complete Saejima’s hunting missions to unlock all of his abilities. Otherwise a top 3 yakuza game.
Exactly why the game was a 1 and done for me
I don't think i can say it any better than that exactly how i felt
Dude, being thrown into a multi-hour hunting side game out of nowhere after playing 0-4 was quite a trip.
All the background music contains a zero in it, cool!
god that’s so cool
I played Kiwami first before 0, and 0 made me replay Kiwami all over again. Then I played 2 and after playing Majima’s side story, I immediately rushed back to replay 0. The trilogy feeds itself.
Man this dudes editing and mic quality gets better and better this man is peak!
Yakuza 0 really did flip this franchise on its head - particularly during COVID in early 2020 when all the memes hit and people were locked up, and RGG should be very thankful for those unfortunate circumstances because it perfectly culminated with the dedication the English team put into bringing this game to the west, and subsequently how much it exploded in popularity. Yakuza 0 is amazing, and genuinely the hype surrounding upcoming games like Gaiden and 8 would NOT have at all been possible had it not been for 0. Based. Great video, King.
Side note, this game has more emotions then most triple A game studios would give stoic characters like Kiryu or Majima. Most of them are kept either entirely silent or just mumble whatever they need to say to make then more... cool. But the Yakuza series actually shows all the emotions of a person even without actual voice lines but with facial expressions. Hell, even Yakuza PS2 had such good expressions for the time being. They show all the little details even though they are such a small studio. Good for RGG Studios, tho
Kiwami was my first game with the series, but then I went back to play 0.
I eventually played everything else that got released. So thank you Yakuza 0, without you I would never have played Lost Judgment (which is easily within my top 5 most favorite games of all time now)
Reading comments like yours sincerely makes me feel " weird " as i have tried Judgment Games but could not like them as much as the Yakuza Titles and much less " Love them " as everyone seem to 😅
I have just never been a fan of the Detective genre bur gave the First Judgment a try because after all I am not a Fan of Japanese Culture but Yakuza 0 was also a " Try " i viewed as an experience to know if i would like those titles or not ( and it is one of the very best game i have ever played in my life ).
I gave up the original Judgment after 2 Chapters, As i did not connected to Yagami ; i recently bought Lost Judgment because i kept reading and hearing statement as strong as yours and , i did like it better from Story to Gameplay but again i am still not into the Judgment as much as i was a Fan of Yakuza 0 or Like a Dragon 🐉.. i played those Games More than any other vidéo games in my life ( 140 hours for 0 and 7 ) and it took me since August of 2020 and March of 2021 ahah 😅😜
It is very rare i find someone like me who prefere the Yakuza titles over the Judgment ones or just do not enjoy the latter as much as in my case ...
Since August of 2020 i only Finished 2 Yakuza titles i mentionned above, like a dragon Ishin ( although similarly to Judgment Games, i was not à Fan of the Era but i never played a Game set in that Era and i ended playing it more than Judgment but not as much as the Yakuza 0 and 7 titles ).
I also feel weird because i found à lot of people not liking Yakuza 7 for its story and mainly for its combat but i loved it as mentionned previsouly, it made me fell in love with turn based combat so much i bought Dragon Quest 11 last year ( just could not really start it yet because i have many games to finish but i dont play very much , not every day or week ).
But i read a comment about someone who enjoyed the Kaito Files Dlc more than the Lost Judgment main story , so i wondered if i could give it à try since i am more into Yakuzas than detectives ( Well , the strange thing is that i enjoyed LA Noire 😜 for example and one detective movie but yes it is definitely not my Genre 🙂 ).
Sorry for my very long comment, i just wanted to share my opinion and feelings 🤪
Johnathan Riesenbach's surname is probably pronounced "Ree-sen-back" - it's a name so one can never be 100% sure, but that would be what I would expect.
Damn son you're really upping the production quality. Excited to see the coverage of JE/LJ.
Also despite what the haters say there's no doubt Yakuza 0 is one of the biggest of the series and most influential for global audiances. Such a good game.
I’m really happy that i got to come across this wonderful channel, i do love your bold approach to the series, you can tell it comes from a place of genuine passion
The GOAT!!
Yes there are games like Lost Judgment and Kiwami 2 that are more technologically advanced but this game just hits different. Yakuza 0 has a special place in my heart tho for being my FIRST Yakuza Game
A long ass time ago I had a Yakuza Without Context twitter account and it hit 10k followers and that will forever be my least important yet biggest fun fact
Wasn't expecting to hear Zero here. Very good video once again.
10 years in the joint
I'm replaying 0 right after I played 7 and I had to tell my brain that Nishki pulled a reverse Aoki Ryo and became Ichiban after Kiwami.
It wasn’t that bad the first playthrough because there are five games between Niskhi and Ichiban, but next to each other it's really distracting.
Probably the most iconic Yakuza game and also the best. The combat is excellent, being a billionaire is always fun, and there is ton of variety, cool items, minigames and stuff to do. It can get a tedious at places with the broken ingame economy and repetitive substories (did anyone ask for 7 telephone club substories?) but it still keeps going even after 50 hours and rewards you at the right places (like the Real Estate Royale side activity is boring on it's own but there are so much good stuff around it that it's probably my favorite side activity for the whole series).
It's also an excellent starting point for the series that you'll enjoy even more if replaying after the first 5 games. I like the later titles but this is where the series truly peaked for me.
9:33 transition clean
this game made me fall in love with the series. started here, then played through all the remasters and remakes, judgement and now will be playing gaiden and infinite wealth
yakuza 0’s story is truly a cut above the rest and I wish it was in the conversation more often when it comes to some of the best stories in gaming alongside god of war 4 or the last of us or something. obv those games have wider appeal but it’s a shame they’re missing out on this
Really, excellent breakdown of this game and the process of Yakuza becoming popular in the west. This was the first game I played, and I've played every game since. Most, multiple times, and will always play every game in the future.
Funny story, this was actually the 3rd Yakuza game I played. I played Yakuza Like a Dragon first then I started Kiryu's story with Kiwami 1, and after that I finally played 0
But yeah this game was pretty great, definitely one of my favorites in the series although I do agree the heat system was annoying at times, but mostly with Kiryu maybe it was just me but Majima didn't feel as affected as much by it
How is that a fun fact?!?
Loved the F-Zero GX music throughout the video. Hidenori Shoji is the goat
I’m a heavy gamer, just got on the yakuza series through Like A Dragon Gaiden: so fire. Playing Yakuza 0 then the next game in the series chronologically
Just as I got off work, what a treat!
Shoutout to SBFP for showing me this game/series. Yakuza has had an almost embarrassingly large impact on my life
I remember when i played 0 during early 2019 and slowly even my FB friendlist started to play the game seeing how many good meme material it got and seeing how I and some other people kept hyping the series
I already owned 3 and 4 and never got into them because I didnt really understand how to play them right but this one got me into the series and made me finish 3 and 4
I’m playing this series starting from 0 wish me luck boyz , liking it so far
I wonder if we’d still have the “Yakuza” title if some localizers were still there, but even then I’m kinda glad they stopped using that title.
The title definitely threw me for a loop when I played the game only to actually be a yakuza for like 3 minutes and then for 99% onward just a civilian lol, I kind of wish they changed it sooner because it definitely made me a bit disappointed when I would've never been if they called it "like a dragon"
@@JimMilton-ej6zi Not sure why but they changed the name to “Yakuza” to try and market it better to the west.
even after playing all of the yakuza series games. 0 is still my favorite and it made me want to 100% complete it, which i did, which i hated. but it was well worth it
the climax battles had me going into fits of rage constantly but completed them all eventually lol
I love playing yakuza 0 a lot it’s very good and fun the boss fights are very simple and easy
Love theses retrospectives !
Currently playing it, and It's fricking awesome🔥👍🏻
I think one other aspect that really helped it take off in the west compared to earlier games is the brutality of the heat actions. I started with 0, then have gone up the list through 4 and am starting 5. The thing that felt most lacking when I got to 3 remaster was the heat actions felt like they lacked impact. I am not sure exactly why, since while I was writing this, I went and looked at compilations of heat actions for 3, 4, and 0, and it's clear a lot of the heat actions use the same animations, but somehow the ones in 0 feel ten times more brutal. More added slow-mo to the attacks? Maybe a better impact sound effect? Different camera work? Maybe it's just the higher fidelity graphics, or how the enemies' jaws doesn't flop around like they're made of rubber like they do in 4. I'm not sure what it is, but there's a significant difference compared to the old games. And I think that difference mattered.
I have a lot of time on my hands right now, so I have watched a lot of playthroughs of 0 by first-time players. You can watch almost every time how their estimation of the game skyrockets when the player gets to the heat action tutorial and sees their first heat actions. A lot of exclamations of "holy shit!" and "oh my god!" and the like, as well. And that kind of awe sticks around all game. I just don't think that you would see that level of reaction with the older ones.
This is my favorite game ever 💥
Awesome job using Shotgun Kiss from F-Zero. Such a good song
That tidbit on the localization was interesting.

i will never forgive nor forget this mistake. this transgression shall haunt you until the end of time.
I remember when this game was coming out and Gravity Rush 2 was coming out at almost the same time, so I basically had to choose between them which was pretty difficult. But in the end, I got this game and I loved it and I've gotten every RGG release after it since.
I am pretty sad that Gravity Rush 2 ended up not being very successful though
Yakuza deserved popularity earlier and gravity rush deserved a chance
Still my favorite. I gotta admit, there's a bit of a bias considering I played this first. But seeing Zero's DNA through playing Y3-5 and even getting my hands on the OG Y2 after playing both Kiwami games only made me appreciate this more.
Deez nuts
I started with 1 on Ps2, got Kiwami from Humble Choice, so I continued the story there.
To be honest, I only got 0 for the arcade minigames (Space Harrier FTW), and couldn't believe how amazing the actual game was.

13:13 - Technically the new one is Ishin Kiwami. The marketing took the usual mad gamble about assuming that the audience would not come in contact with the 2014 version. SPOILER: It never works out and they never learn.

I genuinely don't remember what it was that made 0 popular, that it's a prequel so an easy gateway ?
The story was great.
Unlike MGR, I don't remember the memes causing a surge in players.
Then again it's been so long.
For me it was because every single aspect of the game looped into each other. You wanna do main missions? You can get stronger beforehand, to get stronger you need money, to get money you can do the real estate, and to get better at the real estate you can do side stuff that either gives you armor/good weapons or helps you in real estate which then gets you stronger. Every single thing you do in the game is working towards something, and even the other games can't seem to top that.
Yakuza Zero’s soundtrack is SO GOOOD
Wait, did you really pick Pixy's theme from Ace Combat Zero as the background music for the video?
My maaan
That feels so odd playing licensed version of Y0 after pirate one, where you can read some manga in stores but npc textures are bad
It was absolutely the last chance of the yakuza serie in the west, and they pretty much nailed it. Now we can see that with the increased interest in the series and sales the PC market got all games (besides those not remade or remastered), we got remakes and remasters of those ye olde games, and with the start being Y7 we also got english dub. If not for this game, the serie would most likely quietly die out with the Y6.
I just hope they don't pander too hard to the west due to the increase in fans from there, I'm all for games that have stuff made in the west in them, my profile pic is even from a literal western game, but the charm yakuza has comes from its japanese roots, so hopefully those roots will stay in japan.

This is game is definitive reason why you should not only multi platform a video game instead of locking it behind an exclusivity deal
but also properly localize it instead of region lock it.
It really pisses me off when so many corporate companies complains, feeling salty and then blame the hard working devs for not getting enough sales on said niche games when they could have gotten millions had they just simply localize and release on other platforms which yes requires extra work but it will pay them off handsome if they got it right.

Every other open world games minus a specific few feels like a typical ubisoft open world game.
Why aren't there any single player story driven open world games that are like this ?
Strange how cutscenes weren't mentioned in the video or even comments. One of the reasons I (really) don't like 0 is lack of proper cutscenes, I think I can finger count all of them compared to basically any Yakuza game. To elaborate, first you have cutscenes which are fully voiced and fully motion captured that are few and far in between, then these weird "in-game" cutscenes easily recognised by black borders and stiff uncanny animations where you have to constantly press X to advance to the next line, then you have these strange visual novel-like scenes which are just voices over slideshows and finally regular in game text without voices. It feels so mish mashed and really breaks the mood, at least for me, as if the developers didn't have enough time or resources to properly mocap and just did whatever's the quickest. And before anyone debates me with "more cutscenes = less fun and breaks the pacing" obviously didn't play earlier installments. I really want to love this game but it's such a mixed bag. Not calling it a bad game though.

the localization made me forget that yakuza isnt an american game, which is basically a weird way of saying english word very good i read easy thank you

Yakuza 0 is the best game because it has a disco minigame 😊
Yakuza 0 is pretty good, but man the upgrade system is unfair with its billion dollar abilities for Kiryu. I swear I spent around 10-20 hours on my first playthrough standing motionless in the real estate business getting money to unlock all the abilities and Legend style only for it to be worse than Yakuza 5 Kiryu because of the gear system
@@GugureSux Of Course its a me problem that's why I mentioned it lol. But to be honest I view Yakuza games side content as a distraction rather than a fun aside.chapter
As for the masters I think that's a cop out as Y0 dropkick puts Kiryu back on his feet which was only present in Y5 not to mention everyone in 5 getting extreme heat which in lore should be an evolution of red heat in Y3 and Y4. Not to mention Tiger Drop is a thing in Y0 and Y6 despite no master teaching Kiryu
Like Devil May Cry 3 I feel gameplay comes first before lore for action titles.
To answer the gear problem question it is that all games pre and post 0 give the player a permanent attack speed boost which allows players to fully internalize Kiryu's attack speed. But giving them a changing attack speed makes combat feel awkward when you reach a new threshold. You'll never consistently have the timing memorized which hurt my Brawler, Legend, and Thug timings even after a second playthrough on Legend. Not to mention Rush and Breaker are the best style in Gear 3, but are almost completely unusable in gear 1 (unless you want to slowly combo the air in breaker to get to rush 3, but then it feels really awkward as the enemies are not that aggressive even in legend difficultly). To me Yakuza has always been consistent with attacks as it took 6 games for Kiryu's attacks to change in 0, and then change again soon after for the worse in 6.
I hope I made my views of the Yakuza series clear. I love the series but hate how the combat I fell in love with in 5 instantly fell flat when it came to the prequel.
P.S. MAN!!!!!!!!!! I hated the Amon fight for Kiryu; I was buried under exploding balls for minutes and bored in the finaly stage! Better than 6, but I'm curious to see how he ranks if you've faced any other ?
I found out yakuza due to this game, tho after playing the other games i gotta say yakuza 5 is the funniest one
