EP. 5 - Installing Radial Airplane Motor in Volkswagen | Custom Motor Mounts.

  • On this episode we add on to the recessed boxing plates and create a pair of motor mounts to tie everything together. A major milestone in any build is getting the motor and transmission fitted and it was a great feeling to see if all mounted under is own weight. Really gave us a visual on how great this motor looks sitting in the back. Enjoy!

Geez hope you’re ok mate, that was a little scary watching you, I get back twinges every once in a while and can relate, not a fun thing to go through.
Nice work on those mounts, I like it when you’re done they look pretty much factory, well done!
I watch Karl all the time too, I come his home town up in Canada, very talented young man as you are, enjoy watching your videos! Have a great weekend Jordan!

That’s why I enjoy watching you two, you both explain how and why you do things plus you build a lot of cool things. I bought my first Model A sedan when I was 16 living in Winnipeg, unfortunately I had to part with it in a divorce and always miss it and on the hunt for another. Take care and enjoy your time back in BC

Bro, if that was a stinger in your back, don’t ignore it! Spent years as a paratrooper having lots of little back injures. I would get them randomly holding stuff just like you were and the imbalance would trigger them. Didn’t address it for years and one day that pinch caused my left leg to go to shit. Several surgeries later and never got 100%. Hope it’s not that and you just whacked your shin but your reaction made me think of mine instantly.

Yeah definitely, I’ve been in and out of physio, dad had the same thing left leg is basically numb

      I know the pain...been there.
One disc was ruptured, the core was out and pressed on the nerves, so my leg got numb to the toe.
First of all, raise your workbenches and every spot you work in.
My workbenches range from 1,05m to 1,30m height, since I learned about my back issues.
Because every time you bend over, you'll make it worse.
      The next thing is...
Our bodys are made for long distance running (more jogging).
If we don't do that -none of us does- we lose the muscles in the back that keep us upright and take alot of strain from our spline.
I took long walks in the evening to rectify that problem, it worked surprisingly well.
The third thing I did was putting a cushion to the seatrest in all of my cars. As lumbar support.
That's all I did, never did physio, no surgery done...none of all the things everyone keeps telling.
Only time I feel pain nowadays is the day after I bent ever to lift a transmission....if I lift upright by using the knees, no pain.
      Good luck with your's!!

You should look into the Arcdroid CNC plasma cutter it would be very useful for you and isn’t nearly as expensive as a traditional CNC plasma table.

10:42 a strip of flat material along the edge turning the flat insets into something that could have been pressed industrially would make sense, would stop the flexing back and forth (not that these thicknesses would flex a lot anyway)

Wow, I just noticed you have 192k subs. Congrats Jordan. I don't think I've seen a custom fab channel grow as fast as yours. I think it has to do with your skill set and the production quality of the channel. Well done! The bus is SICK.

I ran a Subi 1800 in my Kombi and tried the radiator up under the center with a big scoop but found it was no good in the hot Queensland conditions as it was picking up the road heat, I mounted the radiator at the rear opening and the air coming down through the side ducts were better but I really needed to put a belly panel under the engine to seal up the cavity so all the ducted air would be forced through the radiator in the rear door way, as I found going up long steep hills the temp would climb to boiling. I can't wait to hear the sound of this triple, it should be wicked, and your fab skills are top noch, awesome job mate. Just noticed that your model Kombi doesn't have the side scoops like the later models.

Heck, that moment at 9:22, was that a slipped disc at number 3-5.
Boy I could feel it as well, and actually ended up making custom tool to get the disc back in,
after spending a couple years at Chiropractor, when the first day of attack,
it took two kitchen chairs to cripple my butt out to the car.
If this sounds familiar, I better make you one too. And I'm never getting my spine fused period..
My Xwife did, and when she showed me the scar ten years later,, and how she's now limited movement, hell, no way.
Now seventy, I still fix my blown out disc at will, or it's Massive Pain for a Week.
I don't like pain meds, as they fake me out if disc is actually in place.
    Cheers

Amazing fabrications! With the $30k price for the engine kit, it's worth every penny to get it right. Looking forward to the full build. Ditto's on the cautions for the pain you experienced. 74twistedshovel was speaking from experience. (You mentioned the drivers side. That's the drinkers side here in the US. lol!)
