Redshift & Cinema 4D with After Effects - Create Z Depth pass for DOF and Fog
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 июл 2024
- In this tutorial I'll walk through the steps of how to properly export a Depth pass out of Redshift using Cinema 4D. Then I will bring the depth pass into After Effects to show how to create a DOF camera blur and also use the depth pass to add fog or mist to your scene.

crazy how you give us this amazing knowledge thank you so much !! never stop teaching. you’re one of the best out there!
Thank you dreams. I learned from working along side amazing artist so its only right I share my knowledge as well 🤙🏾
That was a lot of really useful info only 11mins. I love how consise and to the point your tutorials are.
Thank you friend I try to get right to the point 🤙🏾
thank you winbush- saving the day and allowing me to hit the render button so I can get some shuteye at the end of a long day
This is one of the best video tutorials I have seen. Excellent work. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you!! 🤙🏾
Thanks, that full white depth pass drove me crazy, and smart fog trick !
Yea man its the little things like that once you see how its done it's like oh that simple huh lol
Thank you man this is really really helpful, I’m looking forward to having an easier time with my work flow.
Glad I could help brother 👊🏾
You give us information that nobody else wants to give out of the fear of competition. Respect it man, keep up the good work
Yea man I have no problem sharing what I know we all in this together.
For real this saved me! I always tried to figure out how to get Depth Matte on Real Life footage but couldn't! Thanks a lot!
Your welcome!
Brilliant, thanks dude for the tutorial!
Absolutely no problem 🤙🏿🤙🏿
Really helpful and good clear explanation! Thnx
Thank you man 🤙🏾 appreciate it
Thank you!
Very helpfull. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
thank you
No problem 🤙🏾
Great explanation thank you
Thanks! Make sure to check out my latest video on using Sapphire ZBlur for even better DOF in AE ruclips.net/video/cj3iZSx3miM/видео.html
You just save my life, thanks man
Happy to help! 🤙🏿
this video rules. thank you!
Thank you Brandon appreciate you 👊🏾
Thanks! Got that Z Pass now :)
👊🏾👊🏾
this really helps a lot, thank you!
Your welcome
Thanks buddy! That default white render for the z-depth made me go mad until I found your tutorial... lost 4 hours on that...
I know right it had me going nuts as well for awhile. I'm not sure it's like that by default but glad i was able to help.
Thank you, sir!
Your welcome
Hello from Russia btw! And Biggest thanks :)
Thank you bro glad you've been watching hope my videos have been helping out 💪🏿
You awsome! Big man
Thank you!
thanks !
You're welcome 🤙🏾
Good Video!
Thank you 👊🏾
Hey Jon. How do you prevent depth blur from baking into your image? Is there a box I need to uncheck so that it only goes into my beauty pass? Redshift has changed somewhat since the last time I used it.
Yea I've been using unreal engine it's rare I touch redshift at all these days I'm unsure
@@JonathanWinbush no worries. Turns out my graphics card required an update and it was bugging out. Turns out all I had to do was put the depth pass on in the render, switch off bokah on the camera and boom sorted.
Hey Maaaan! I love your tutorials! you saved my life several times haha. So thanks for that
Thank you so much María. Yes so i usually put a soft blur on the depth pass in after effects just like a fast blur and that should help soften those edges 🤙🏿
@@JonathanWinbush lots of love to you man! thank u
Of course thank you 🙏🏾
You actually want to go to the AOV settings for Depth and choose "Center Sample" instead of "Full." This will make the Depth pass not aliased, so you should get much less halo around your foreground objects!
@@natevplas Thank u Nate!
Thanks for the tutorial! Super helpful. Does anyone know why my DOF is still be applied to my RGB when I render out my AOVs? Thanks!
Hmm it shouldn't have the color files embedded. Did you add DOF to you render maybe by turning it on with your camera?
@@JonathanWinbush Dude, Winbush, you are the man! That was the issue. I did not realize you had to disable the DOF on the camera and just let the Z-Depth AOV do all the talking in post. I can't thank you enough for the quick reply on this, I have a deadline today! Really appreciate it.
No problem at all glad I could help 👊🏾
Easy and clear. Thanks man
Thank you bro 💪🏾👊🏾
You're cool!
Thanks 🤙🏾
Saver you are.. Sub for that💕
Appreciate you 🤙🏿
😍😍😍💙💙💙💙
Thanks!
I'm a little confused about the use of the Z Depth pass to add fog (the layer you blended as screen)... I would do that in Redshift with an environment shader. Why did you choose to do it that way instead of natively in the renderer itself? (It's just easier and faster? I'm about a week in Redshift from Octane.)
If it's just a "almost good as" effect instead of "wasting" processing power, and if so, are there other fast and dirty (and easy effects) you do that you could show us as well?
Sometimes I go this route if I need more control in post. I do a lot of work for tv shows so I try to do as much in post as possible incase of client notes. Native Redshift fog looks better but if a client is like " hey dial back on the fog or can you remove it all together " its faster to turn off the layer in AE than to re-render the entire scenr in RS. Sapphire by Boris FX has included an add fog feature that uses your Z depth layer to pull info from as well i believe i use it in my campfire tutorial if you want to check that one out.
Hopefully this can help ruclips.net/video/TyzR27rYRMY/видео.html
@@JonathanWinbush, k, ty for the input. For some reason I installed the update to Sapphire and it's crashing Ae on me, or it's taking way longer than I expect, idk...I don't usually connect my workstation to the internet for obvious reasons, but it looks like it's time to see what updates it's expecting with Adobe Suite...and maybe even win10. I have enough nuisance killing the background telemetry process (that reinstalled itself, when I removed it by Power Shell in admin mode!) every time I hear my hdd grinding, cause it's not smart enough to use my SSD.
Just saw you posted a Sapphire fog tut...now you got me motivated!
What color space do you render your Redshift output? Idr if exr's force linear space or not. Should I just untick the sRGB in the render settings?
Do you give your clients a specific number of revisions they're allowed on a job? I only have myself as my my worst client, so I'd like to restrict the revisions to industry standard 😊
@@jeffreyspinner5437 All good. I hadn't updated my sapphire suite yet I'm still on 19 so maybe try that version see if it works out for ya. As for the color space I render Linear at least I believe I am since I usually use OpenEXR and like you said I believe it forces it to Linear whenever your using 32bit channels but for multipass I usually just use 16bit png since those don't matter as much.
As for revisions it really various from client to client but I would say negotiate that stuff before you even start a job I've made the mistake of not doing that before and the client went wild changing little stuff every render. I like to keep it to about 3 that way all the parties involved will take a good look at what they want changed since theres a set limit. The client is welcomed to go over 3 but then I have to charge for additional revision past our agreed number.

@@JonathanWinbush, cool thanks for the info and direction.
would you please make tutorial about normal pass?????
Sorry I no longer use Redshift Ive been using Unreal Engine
В моей версии Redshift 2.5.48 нет AOV Manager .его засунули в настройки рендера
Not sure I understand
Is there a way I can only render the depth pass ?
I don't think I think you have to render the whole thing plus the depth
@@JonathanWinbush Yea i realised that. Thank you for the help !!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
👍🏾😁
i have just a black screen for the depth channel i don't understand
what version are you using?
@@JonathanWinbush the last one but the black screen dissapear when i desactivate the progressive render
Hmm yea its been awhile since ive used redshift in this way ive been using unreal engine these days but Ive always followed my steps in this video before and never had a black screen. Maybe its a bug in the more recent versions?
@@JonathanWinbush It's not a bug. When progressive render is enabled the AOV gets disabled. Therefore, you need to have progressive render disabled to make the AOV export without being a completely black image.
Still all white for me. Haven't been able to get a depth pass work in redshift....ever
I'm not sure what to say this is how it always worked for me
@@JonathanWinbush No worries, it's just my bad luck I guess. Still a nice clear tutorial. This kind of thing seems to always happen though. I'll keep working through it
@@ryansaper are you using a more recent version of RS? I havent used the update versions but maybe it's changed the way it works now. I'd maybe hit up the RS team on their discord.
your z channel is wrong. it's seen on 10:33, when you made too much blur and some artifacts and halo around branches appears. it's because of incorrect premultiplying this channel in redshift.
oh ok thanks
Hey Maria, Could you explain further what you mean by this and how to resolve? Thanks!
@@Joerdodd the easiest way is to render depth path 32 bit and 4k
