And it is in most cases. My mostly recast army plays at a GW store for years and the store managers and other players cannot tell. I do have some authentic pieces as well and they're not distinguishable. It's sad how much Forge World charges and they cannot provide a product that's less jacked up than a recast product.

I was the owner of a guard army that was almost 90% recasts.
You couldn't tell until you picked up what should have been a white metal guardsman and realised it was actually resin.
I played several official GW tournaments without detention apart from one very old school gw staff guy who picked up a guardsman from my dead pile, the look of suprise on his face was priceless, he just closely examined the model, complimented me on the paint job and put my guy down and walked off laughing to himself and never said a word..

I'd have to get 50% off a GW product to even consider it. Cost of patrols and HQs now just make me sick. GW created all their problems; large and small on their own. They created recasting, they create more and more 3D print hobbyists every single day. They created the demand, and they created their own vitriol against the actual fan base. They set the pricing, they want a rotational live service, they want fewer customers, and they want to sell fewer products at as high a cost they can manage to as few consumers as possible. I better buy some popcorn futures for the next ten years.

@@deejayxcrypt I personally have no problem with the idea, even with GW's tweet, its the reason behind it I dislike. Its disingenuous and they're changing things to suit what's hip in 2024; there is no narrative or creative drive that has spawned this change and others like it, it is purely a business decision.
Personally I've taken the decision to erase all current lore from my mind. I am an isolated hobbyist so there's only me to dictate what 40K is, and so with that in mind I'm taking things back to 2nd edition, back to the dark age of GW Wholesomeness.

  • @Synaesthesie12
    @Synaesthesie12 5 месяцев назад +15

I was a die hard 40K fan. Started with the hobby 24 years ago and absolutely loved it. I had enough time to kill at the doctors and in the hospital due to my health and 40k was always there, the perfect distraction. GW already screwed up enough back then, but at least with the design team you still had the feeling that hobbyists were writing for hobbyists and were really making an effort.
Andy Chambers, Alessio Cavatore, Paul Sawyer, even good old Gav and many more. I would never have thought of getting 3D printed minis or Recast. I even bought all the codices, regardless of whether I already had them as a .pdf. But since the 8th edition and now at the latest, GW can kiss my arse. It's not the 40K it used to be, the rules are largely rubbish and some of the background is infinitely badly written. I have dozens of armies and no real desire to play it at the moment. The only thing that still really excites me is 30K. Fortunately, the books are now finished. GW should just leave it alone and not change any more of the fluff there and not tarnish Alan Bligh legacy. Here, too, I will try to only use recasts.
Long story short, fuck GW and what they did to 40K.
    Signed, an old fan.

The funny part, to me, about 3D printing vs molding is that molding will always be cheaper. The initial investment of the mold might be a lot higher, but the materials are comparable to UV resin. The biggest difference there is speed. A mold can churn out significantly more models per hour than any resin printer I've seen, which means the costs of running the mold are lower and the mold will last longer than a 3D printer, because it's significantly easier to replace components and do upkeep on the mold.
But GW has chosen to charge $65 for maybe $.50 of plastic and cardboard. The ink on the box is the most expensive part of the kit.
For an individual, it's cheaper to buy a 3D printer, buy the STL's for your army, run off your army, and throw the printer away.
As far as recasts, a lot of the places that you buy them from, you're actually getting better quality from them for the most part, because they want you to keep giving them money. In fact, for the most part, they're not recasts. Those are actual molds they were commissioned to make, but instead of just making the one like they were supposed to, they made a few of them, so they could do their own thing on the side.
And I don't blame them one bit. In fact my Horus Heresy army is all recast and 3D printed. What do I care? I don't go to events or play in their stupid tournaments.

A few years back they added a feature ti the website that showed examples of the model you were looking at from Instagram. GW would comment on a post asking for permission to show your image on their site. The feature got pulled when obvious 3D prints were being spotted on their own website and used to mock GW online.

The sad part is, they could’ve found a way to make the Female Custodes work in a more lore friendly way without trying to gaslight the community.
What they could’ve done (that would still probably have not been received well) was hit us with:
“In the ashes of Terra at the end of the Horus Heresy, the once noble 10,000 of the Emperor’s body guards were reduced to mere hundreds. Desperate to replenish their numbers, they took to the stars, and in the shadow of the Scouring, they found candidates amongst the sons and daughters of mankind that could ascended to demi-godhood.”
Still not perfect, but INFINITELY better than trying to tell us “they’ve always existed since the beginning.”

They could in theory reproduce to create more Primarchs. Marines however are not, they simply have genetics implanted into them to help encourage the growth and acceptance of their new organs. Anytime you implant an organ into a human youre implanting genetics into them, but those implanted genetics wont be passed on. In order for a Marine to be able to produce more Marines his sperm production would have had to be modified specifically, and if the Emperor didnt want them to reproduce he wouldnt have done that.
The creation of a Custodes is completely unknown. Its known that the Emperor personally hand crafted the first 10,000, but beyond that its unlikely the Imperium can duplicate his results and so its likely very similar to how Marines are created. In either case its the same deal, if the Emperor didnt want them to reproduce he wouldnt modify their reproductive system to pass on their modified genetics.

The business model fo GW for a long time has not been to carter to longtime fans and players.
Their target audience are 14 year old boys who buy one or two full armies, anything after that is bonus.
Thats the reason to rewrite core rule books every few years, release new army books, that often invalidate big parts of former armies, so "used" armies are not desireable on the secondhand market as models can not be used in newer versions.
Also the reason why apart from the two core games, many other good games they made were either shoved off to the Specialist Games division or just outright canceled after a few years.

Big difference between recasts and 3d prints. After a recast is cleaned up and painted it's going to be more difficult to detect it since it has all detail of official works. 3D printing shows print lines and people will not sand their entire models to insure all lines are gone. Way easier to detect.

Since that Ultra army pic was in 2015 I'm not sure 3d prints were anywhere near as good as they are now, but recast is almost certainly as those have been around forever and, when you get into resin kits, are often better than Forgeworld resin.
Big thing with GW is they have had market dominance for so long because they provided everything, and 40k was ubiquitous. But they were reaching the limit even before this femstodes crap with ridiculous prices. I remember when a box of 10 marines was like $30, and even that was expensive. Now that same box is $50, and some boxes of 5 are inexplicably $60. For the price of a GW combat patrol you can get a full-size army for most other games, or at least a good chunk of one, not just the bare minimum needed to start playing the game in a simplified format.

I don’t doubt there were quite a few in there as we were fallible as the next guy and missed stuff all the time. But all and I mean all on the eavy metal minis are essentially casts or 3d prints. Whereas the army painter armies (ones done by Peachy or Duncan) were usually plastic as they were quicker and needed less lead time. Aside from 3D printing, another problem for GW is people buying vehicles and figures second hand from places like Ebay. Also, you have other manufacturers making great figures that could be used as Imperial Guard in 40K. When I got started in this thirty years ago these options did not exist. I'm not sure GW "owe" fans anything. Ultimately, they're a business that makes toy soldiers. Their purpose is to make money and, at the end of the day, they can do whatever they like with the lore or the products. They are just products in reality, and businesses will always try to protect their IP. While 3D printing and other unofficial means of getting miniatures has added a huge amount of additional depth to the hobby, it doesn't mean that GW is no longer necessary. The unofficial stuff is great for established hobbyists but, for newcomers, GW has the largest reach and biggest market presence, so there's a good chance that that's how they will find their way into the hobby. Many people will happily buy, paint and play exclusively with GW products, because they're (generally) good quality and widely available. There's nothing wrong with that, and it requires no psychosis. It's a hobby and people can enjoy it in a multitude of different ways.
