oh this is just a very small slice into my aspect of the production. The whole thing is actually quite impressive because each boat as it's own production crew, and then there's the ground crew, the helicopter crew, etc.... it's fascinating to watch/hear it all orchestrated

I lost a drone once.... fortunately it turned up later. It had fallen down the back of the sofa. Found some loose change at the same time! Woohoo!
I lost my brand new Alien build in some tall grass, and got it back later when I saw the guys mowing the field. By some miracle, they only destroyed my Circular Wireless 5.8 GHz antenna, which back in 2016 was like $96 haha!

It's great to see you guys out there making the magic of FPV known to a wider audience, you're paving the way & creating the niche. I think we all get a buzz when someone reacts like that because they're getting what drives our passion for flight.
good stuff Tommy! can't wait to see more and even catch the episode as well. i've only lost one quad (thankfully!) but it wasn't to water, tall grass, or even a car tire. no....it was to a SQUIRREL!! it was a little armattan tadpole i built out and was flying around my back yard. i crashed into a tree and hit the ground. i knew exactly where it SHOULD have been but after searching for a couple of hours, i gave up for the day. i looked at the DVR footage and saw a squirrel grab this little quad by the camera and that's when it cut off...i had to slow it WAY down to understand what happened...but yeah....can't make this shit up...lol

I love the montage of all the gear setup, batt charging, sd card file transferring, etc in the hotel room. I'm well aware of how much behind the scene work this would take and I'm glad you are showing it. Sometimes easy to forget you guys don't just turn on your TX plug in the lipo and go flying, bing bang boom done.
Lol, for sure. When everyone turns in for the night, we’re still up charging batts, dumping SD cards, making repairs, etc
"Thou who has never lost a drone has not flown long enough yet"... I believe this is one of the FPV commandments.

Have lost a drone twice on shoots, one in the very first CR shot of the day, failsafed due to military jammers. Picked up the pieces, laughed to put the AD's mind at ease, picked up second quad and kept shooting :D

Nice work. I used to travel as an industrial engineer. I know what it's like working out of a room, your checked bags without all your stuff you depend on. It requires ingenuity and professionalism. You nailed is despite the challenges. Sure is nice to have a customer that makes sure your needs are met as well, the people you worked with seem like a class act. They sure appreciate your flying skills, that's got to be rewarding. You have my respect (as you have had for many years now, doesn't seem possible how long I've been doing this).
Keep up the super work, I'll be looking for your footage on DC.

AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME job Tommy. Thanks for making these behind-the-scenes videos of your "Deadliest Catch" work. We wouldn't have known how much it took you to be able to do your job, excellent job at showing sooo much; in so little time too. I lost my first build that came out so amazing, that a lot of people didn't believe that it was my first build. I lost it on my very first flight using goggles. I lost signal, took off the goggles and spotted the props reflecting in the sunlight, tried bringing it back, but lost it in the sunlight. I'm not giving up on FPV though because that's what helps me keep going. I've got 2 types of cancer, so I can't work anymore, but people like you, Nurk, RCShim, and Stephane Couchoud, etc (and God); Helps me see a lot of the cool stuff around the world, but in the eyes of an FPV pilot, and behind the scenes. If I ever get to work again, I'll definitely be building another quad. Thank you so much for these videos.

Lost my old martian build in a corn field and my dog was playing with another dog. Went over to separate them after about two hours of searching and boom!! Right at my feet!! Extra treats for doggo that day. 🤓 🐕

Beautiful shots! Obvious question: Why not spend 20$ and 5g of additional weight on a GPS und hit rescue mode if video dies and configure it as failsafe? Especially since you don't only lose a quad and a GoPro but also that sweet footage. I tested rescue mode many times and for me it just works, even with a cheap Beitian BN-220T.
I've only really had 1 other job where GPS rescue would have saved me. That said, I've got those things ordered and going onto all of my drones moving forward. Even testing iNav
@@ummagawdFPV There is really not much of a downside, apart from having yet another component that needs mounting and configuring. I don't like having too many gadgets but the pain of losing a quad is something I can live without. For INav you'd want an FC with a baro and a GPS module with a built-in compass like the BN-880 which is kinda chunky.
@@Gosuminer There is also the fact that being on set means sometimes it's just go time and you got get the shot even if there isn't a good GPS lock. Still better than nothing though.
@@blazer5979 Vifly has the GPS-mate for specificly this niche application. It powers your GPS so it can get a fix before you plug in the lipo.
@@Gosuminer or just power your gps from 3v3 and then have usb plugged in powering the fc.

I lost a drone... was gutted, looked for the thing for days! Couldn't find it!
A year later me and my son were walking in the area and my son while playing discovered my lost drone! We couldn't believe it! Everything still worked and after unceasing the motors it still Flew! Sun burnt esc wires and all!
that's awesome. I lost one too wayyyy back when Betaflight was truly "beta". The kwad had a bug that sent it full throttle. Searched for the rest of the day without success. It showed up on my doorstep 3 days later (in pieces). Apparently the person who found it was savvy enough to watch the footage off the SD card and figured out where I lived (because I was test flying around my house the same day).

This is soooo amazing man. Ive been watching deadliest catch since the begininng of the show in 2003! And the idea that its gonna have FPV footage in it is absolutely freakin amazing! Keep em comin tommy!💯💯🤟

Luckily haven't lost one yet. Close a few times though. I had a long mountain ridge run down to a canyon that led to the ocean. The digital video froze twice and I just maintained throttle and waited it out. I believe the cause was another dji camera drone turning on during my flight. Also have had hundreds of birds dive bombing me at a bridge over a river. They were small but they would dive from about a hundred feet and attack and swarm the drone the whole flight. Also chasing waves and had them randomly splash off rocks and soak my quad real good over the ocean. I've been very lucky so far. Amazing work Tommy. Keep it coming it inspires us all.

I have lost some doing water proximity flying, then I put one small empty water bottle under the body. It floats enough to recover and flys fine

I lost drone in Hudson River. My drone with gps was giving me issues I wanted to film a lighthouse. So I sent other drone out and forgot I never fixed the antenna that was broke. So when I turned to the bad side failsafe into the river.

All good brother! I lost 2 drones (FPV) on my last trip ...I got a bit overly excited when I was flying the Oregon Coastline the other month. Actually, recovered 1 of them with footage.....it happens. Looked like little room for error when you were flying that low to the water. Not running Crossfire? Just DJI FPV system? Just curious......putting Crossfire on my new quads going forward.
always run crossfire. There's too much running on 5.8 in production that it would just be silly to not run crossfire

gosh ive been out of FPV for 6 months now! wanting to get back in but over the past 5 years i have lost 3 kwads, the most epic was when an egal, falcon or some massive bird (after watching DVR) took me down 2.6 miles out in the mountains in UT. never got it back! probably still in some nest at a top of a tree near skyline Ridge. i Know that feeling! luv ur content tommy!
dude that's what I was sketched about when I saw how many bald eagles there were! Hundreds of them! They outnumber all other birds out there.

Thats why i put gps even on my fs quad.. at some distance even we dont do long range something can happen. And the gps rescue can give time for the dji goggles to regain. This is my humble opinion.

made my day tommy, i hit directly the pause at ipa and take one for me too:) last lanzarote trip i lost my drone after a hard crash with a gull no chance to bring it back good vega frame, good thing second monngoat was rdy and was able to finish my trip with great epic footage, so all lanzarote vids are with MG done also long range stuff.. unbeliveable :) Enjoy your jobs and go flyin !

Amazing flying and what an incredible experience!! After 6 years of flying all kinds of quads I lost my first three weeks ago into the sea. 6" Catalyst Banggod with a Hero 9! Not a nice experience....
Fixed wing, but one time flying clouds I got further away than I realized and Failsafed, on a peninsula with the wind blowing towards the water. iNav took over in emer landging which is basically toilet bowl till it hits the ground. By some miracle it landed on land and while driving around looking for it I was able to pick up the telemetry signal and got the GPS on my radio, THANK YOU iNav LUA! Craziest part is that is landed exactly where I often park at another field that I fly at #oneinamillionodds
Guess I'm gonna have to try to catch some of the Deadliest Catch to see some of you shots now, sick gig!

I have lost SO many drones to the water. I JUST lost my first 5” and GoPro in a salt marsh. I crawled through the mud, up to waist-deep for 45 minutes…. Got the drone, but it was ruined. I was so upset. But then I saw your 1st in this series and bought a 2fiddy from RDQ!!!! I’ll be back!!!!!

Epic, I lost one in the Atlanking flying fomr a boat ona trip to Purto Rico, this was many years ago in 2016. Firs toen lost, not last but it was VERY SAD... but made me want to do it more.... Great series of videos man, really enjoing these.

Sorry you lost a drone. Hopefully, you were at least able to use a backup and get close to the same shots. I think it's time to develop a super compact flotation device that gets deployed with an AUX switch for moments like this.

I had a desync over the marshland in Charleston SC with a brand new session 5, that's the only one I couldn't recover.

wow, nice video!! not enough water in flyable SW US of A to come close to losing a drone but these "Ephedra nevadensis bushes make great catchers mits!! had to walk over half a mile one way to recover a 'Ti' when my eagle eye spotter lost contact; hit the switch...RSSi saved her as well as the bush so maybe not totally lost but she was my favorite; maybe I should upgrade her to 6S--
oh and bring back some crabs maiin!! do a fly n kook!!
