Hello here! I'm a psychologist and I would like to point out that the two researchers that have been quoted in the video at 15:57 seem to be a little biased, if I may say so.
The reason it seems to be so is because of the interpretation of the results that they concluded on. Some more recent studies suggest that the main reason people become "Hikikomori" has far more to do with the insanely intense pressure the educational system puts on the youth of Japan. Not everyone is capable of adapting well to such social pressures, and even less so when said pressures are allowing for less leisure and require more work.
A shrinking social circle means less social support, as well as a figurative nose-dive in ambition and self-confidence. I do believe that the 'Hikikomori' phenomenon is entirely reversible, if only less intesive alternatives to higher education and being a 'good student' where to be implemented. Regardless, I do not believe that 'Individualism' has anything to do with this for the most part. Intense pressure in any enviroment is hard to resist and resignation is the most common, although obviously not the best, conclusion that most people arrive in.
Thank you! That "individualism" explanation was so ridiculous. "This is America's fault somehow!" Thanks for saying this.
Japan: puts their youth under extreme societal pressures that are pretty much impossible for any human to meet in order to make them conform.
*Japan’s youth collapses under the pressure*
Japan: This is America’s fault.
I'm also a psychologist, and I think the individualism argument is quite valid. Eastern cultures were always far more collectivist than Western cultures (especially USA). In a collectivist culture, your self-esteem does not stem from your personal accomplishments relative to the rest of society, but to the extent that you fit in the societal script. For example, if your parents worked at a grocery store, you would naturally follow the same line of work and feel accomplished by the fact that you fit in as a piece of the collective. In individualist cultures, you are always competing to come out on top, and if you don't, your self-esteem and motivation will be gravely affected. This is also arguably why consumerism is so high in the USA, the people who did not manage to get to a position of prestige, would feel unhappy and look for escapism through media and other pleasures (like food and alcohol etc.).
And what started the societal pressure?
It was the industrialization
And what startet the industrialization?
It was the industrial revolution
And what started the industrial revolution?
It was britain
And what else did britain start?
The USA
Thus America is guilty
Checkmate if I do say so myself
...and I do
(This comment is purely meant as a joke. Don't take anything I said seriosly)
I don't claim to be an expert on psychology or culture. But as an outsider looking in, one major flaw I see with the salaryman system is that it doesn't seem to take into account those who would probably have a much happier employment if they were given the option to do jobs that involved working with their hands, moving around and/or physical labor in general.
Speaking from experience, I personally prefer physical labor (such as janitorial shit (no pun intended) for example) over sitting in a cubicle all day. Mainly because the schedule tends to have a clearer beginning, middle and end compared to the never ending tide of paperwork.
Now I'm not sure if any of those programs for hikikomori focus on alternative careers to the salaryman occupation, but I feel job programs/trade schools would help some of these young men lead more fulfilling lives if they were able to explore options for employment that best suited their lifestyles.
Kind of wished youd talk more about the 80s anime boom where anime was being shown ocasionally on western TV(animondays) and 80s conventions sharing the media more and more. And mention toonami's and adult swims huge influence on the american anime fanbase but other than that a great video
Great video series Fredrik. Becoming a patron this month.
Blame the USA for individualism? Oh I suppose forcing your kids to stress over their grades and to work their whole lives to either 'have honour' or be 'a failure' on 1 very narrow path has nothing to do.
Where is part one?
Yeah where did it go?
As an American who can identify as an Hikiomori, I can tell you crippling depression, extreme anxiety, and a looming sense of dread that never goes away is constant and all play a big part in why it's so hard to just... Do anything.
I know many people can simply say "shrug it off" or "too bad that's life" I cannot really begin to describe just how truly hard it is to do just that.
I try to take medications, talk to doctors and get better, but the only thing they've succeeded in is helping me not put a gun to my head when the sense of doom is too much.
I can only say that I feel for these people. I can relate to them, and it makes me sad that there are so many others who are stuck in the situation I am.
This series is just so awesome and informative.
@1:21 as was getting into the right High School, High School was not mandatory before, during, and still is not mandatory in Japan. But the majority of Japanese get High School Educations to get great jobs.
In Japan you go to College to become a professional, like a Doctor, Lawyer, Historian. etc.

There are still few people making those, but ussually with songs from said anime. Pretty tame stuff.
People still make them unironically and while most the 00's ones are pretty bad, a lot of them are like really really good! But if you haven't seen whatever anime they're about you can't really appreciate them. Imo the best AMV channel is @Obitosdespair

The concept of the 'Weeaboo' is particulary fascinating. Media which was produced as escapism convinced westerners that it was an accurate representation of the japanese 'mainstream' and has led them to glorify a country they know almost nothing about.
Royal 97 I think it's due to us getting limited media from Japan. I'm sure when the Chinese martial arts videos got localised I'm sure people though everyone did martial arts. Personally as a kid I really liked the old architecture,in geography as a teen we studied their steel making, building structures and how they built them to survive, their changing of their landscapes ect. Personally I find those interesting. But with a limited view you do get people thinking life in Japan is just like anime,I've seen people saying it.....
Infelious Kazkari Yup my aunt was obsessed with “Chinese things” and has a tattoo she doesn’t know the meaning of because she got so into martial arts and then anything that claimed to be Chinese she would get. Worst part is she never educated herself and still does it.
That might be true for US people (as usual), labeling things and making memes out of sheer ignorance and stereotypes.
The enthusiasts of certain art forms of Japan have also taken the work of studying deeper into Japan's roots.
Surely it must be related to the stupid ways USA censors everything they fail to understand or don't fit in to make an extra profit (e.g. Robotech).
Also the term "Weeaboo" is just a nonsense word made by 4Chan to get past a word filter that banned "wapanese" (white+Japanese)

I really think the stigma of mental health issues in Japan should be mentioned when the topic of hikikomori is brought up.
It's not so much the parents being taken advantage of by a lazy kid. I think it's more they'll enable the child to avoid the shame of having a child with a mental health issue.
Wouldn't you kind of figure it out anyway if the child didn't do the normal things, wasn't spoken about? Silly to think you can curtail being ashamed by allowing shameful idleness and defeatism to be perpetuated
Like I know people whose son is basically hikikomori but somehow holds a job, they try to help him and have him engage with people nornally but it's just so futile its sad, and obviously everyone knows
Not really something I expect a japanese parent to be indulging- although obviously some hikikomori are still obviously cleaning their rooms and contributing to the house, I think it might be allowing mental illness to fester that allows them to put up with an extremely sedentary lifestyle to the maximum, clutter and filth. After all what would stop an adult beyond kicking out that you should actually be allowed to do?
Which I would find alarming, even if my culture did not give you the boot as you come of age. Giving up on everything, on trying to be healthy.
I get that stuff is cool. You should also have a life and take out your trash, and store your cool fun stuff properly.
@@xSwordLilyx It's kinda a type of social issue which won't have an easy remedy. Japanese schools and their family/public culture is known to be very strict/obedient/submissive in instances, although yes Hikkis could definitely clean their rooms, but I don't think they have that much of a will to live, apart from few hobbies.
I can kinda understand the pain hikikomori go through. I have asthma and I live in California. We have terrible air quality, so I can not go outside without a bit of coughing and congestion. Sometimes though, I don’t want to go outside or even outside my room because socializing just didn’t seem important. My family makes fun of me for being a hermit, and those comments make me feel even worse. In the words of a wise skeleton, “getting to the surface doesn’t really appeal to me anymore.”
@@xSwordLilyx The thing there is, if it's not spoken about by the parents, other people try not to talk about it either. Gossip and rumors, sure, but nothing out in the open, which would be way worse.
@@aliasmcgames I have ADHD, guess I was lucky I wasn't born in Japan.
A good example of the Western world 'Shrugging off' Japanese animation as childish is one I personally was in the middle of when I was a child.
And that was the show called Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, Alternatively known as 'SIlver Fang' which is about a pack of dogs who travel all over Japan to recruit more dogs to fight against a giant bear known as 'Akakabuto'.(Red Helmet)
The show was extremely popular in the Northern Countries, such as FInland and Norway, and that's perhaps where it's popularity was highest, if it being dubbed to Norwegian and Finnish but not English is any indicator.
That show was very, VERY violent and quite dark, and showed very macabre and graphic content, including laceration, decapitation, drowning, suicide attacks, impaling, eye-gouging, skull-crushing, clawing, biting, tearing out throats etc, all with very visible displays of blood and gore.
And know what the Northern countries said?
'We don't see any harm in showing this to our children. This is fine.'

Their viking blood is still somewhere in there huh.
Wow, a lot of the criticisms that millenials receive nowadays seem earily similar to the criticisms otaku received in the 80's in japan.
I was thinking the same thing when I saw that. Especially after our market crash and with the age increase in young adults leaving home increasing. As well as the rising depression rates in our younger generation. I think the view on individualism he mentioned, that they claim hurt Japan is also having an effect here. I see a lot of parallels.
In many ways its the older generation forcing blame on the next gen to make them think its their responsibility to fix the mess the prev gen made (market crashes) and to avoid getting fingers pointed at them
Honestly, the Boomers heard much the same BS. They were an idealistic, "SJW" generation that entered maturity just to get smacked in the face with debt, recession and a war -- one that none of them were old enough to vote on, but they were old enough to be shipped out to fight it. They took over from a more polluting, racist, and brutal generation, and were blamed for ills they hadn't been around for.
If it sounds familiar, it's probably because it's a pretty common pattern.
On the upside, the new generations do benefit from vastly improved technology, science, and cultural comprehension. So hey, silver lining.
@@irresponsiblyblue1411 This is late, but Boomers came after the Depression and WWII.
At least milennials arent serial rapists like otakus
I hate the notion that animation seems to be known as "children's medium" its jus odd to think a style or media type can't be used with other genres
It’s especially weird considering it’s never been true too. When animation was first made, it was just a medium, like film. When people act like “cartoons for adults” are new, it does explain a lot of the stuff I watched in the 90s though because looking back some of those definitely weren’t written for kids lol
Animation started out as a thing for all ages but I can see why adults would have thought that it was only for kids by the 90's after the cheap and for the most part not very good Hannah Barbara cartoons from the 60's and 70's (they had some good stuff but they had dozens of shows that have been forgotten from not being very good) and 80's cartoons that were literally toy commercials. That said, the Simpsons existed the 90's and South Park came out in the late 90's so it was a dying argument then. There was so many western adult cartoons by the early 2000's that you would look stupid saying that all cartoons were for kids. Maybe some people didn't find shows like Family Guy deep enough though. If they had known about anime, they at least couldn't argue that animation couldn't be deep though.
Hentai is totally for kids. lol
@@mattwolf7698 Actually a lot of the oldest cartoons are actually specifically for adults, and weren't meant for kids. But the baby boomers watched them growing up and just assumed cartoons were for kids. There are a lot of old cartoons today that are often marketed and sold as kids' entertainment that anyone with two brain cells to fire a synapse between would know isn't.
Animation was meant for everybody it wasn't until hanna barbera came along is when animation started being perceived and marketed towards kids
A little disappointed that you didn't really cover the fan club and tape trading era of western fandom beyond a couple of photos from early cons. The way you wrote the fansub segment makes it sound like fansubs were invented in or just before the internet era, rather than the truth of the practice going back to at least the early-to-mid 80's. Also surprised you didn't mention "the other Miyazaki" when you were discussing negative connotations of the word "otaku", since the murders of Tsutomu Miyazaki also contributed strongly to said negative connotations for a long time in Japan.
That said, I get that these videos are a very broad overview only and that some stuff is bound to be left out. That being considered, I think you did a great job! I'm especially glad that you made sure to continue mentioning female anime fans and otaku, as the entire history of female anime fandom (both in Japan and abroad) is super fascinating and could fill entire videos by itself. Too often I've seen people diminish the role women have played in anime fandom history, and continue to play in supporting the industry today (like, there was a great interview with Yoshiyuki Tomino where he talked about how female fans were the ones who really supported Gundam a lot in the early days and got that ball rolling, which was great to hear). So I definitely appreciated the multiple points of focus in both parts on female-targeted works and fans.
Oh yeah, I had to truncate the section on western otaku culture because the video was already 40 minutes long and I had spent so much time talking about Japan that cutting portions of America's interaction with anime seemed like the smartest choice, if not a painful one. I also hesitated to talk about the otaku murderer for the same reason.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video nonetheless! Women who are fans and producers of manga and anime are such an interesting topic that I could do a whole video on them alone, I think. For example, the woman whose picture I used when talking about shojo had a lesbian lover for 50 years! How badass is that!
I'm not old enough to have been part of the tape trading days, but my first anime purchases were on VHS. I did read me some terrible, practically unintelligible fansubs back in the day though. We've come a long way in terms of quality and convenience.
Deleted scenes? And I really respect the fansub community. If I ever understand Japanese, I'd like to join in. Some of my favorite translations are unofficial subs that had way more effort put into the wordplay.
Maxfield Stanton Yeah, I remember watching most of DBZ on shitty VHS tapes with nonsensical Chinese-to-English subs. How quickly we forget! :D
I was borrowing tapes in the late 90's from a friend who introduced me to anime, and one of them was of the original Jojo OVA (from 1993). Even though I haven't seen the new series, I still get many Jojo references thrown around on the internet lol.

15:55 , "We're pretty sure it's the West's fault for all the nervous people who are afraid of dying a miserable salary man, and just want to be left alone."
Japan has a problem, and it's not Hikikomori. It's so much deeper. Even their Anime tries half-heartedly to address it only for it to come full circle and back to "It's just that you aren't motivated enough to work for everyone else around you", because of course it would. The anime industry is populated by salarymen, not NEETs. They refuse to acknowledge the fact that the only way for someone to get ahead in their culture is to throw yourself head first at a company and break your back while doing it. ' Karoshii ' is an actual word for them, that roughly translates to ' Death by Work ' . the fact that it needs to be a coined term to describe a yearly phenomena for them should be enough warning, but here we are at 15:55, and their leading experts say "Nah man, fucking west telling these kids they don't have to put up with that elsewhere. Gaijin do it because it's a part of their culture, but we're *Different*." We've got problems in the west, but at least we recognize them when we see them.
The denial of any failing is as integral to Japanes culture as the collectivism. Read the fucking adress by Hirohito announcing the surrender.
"We have recognized that the situation has not necessearly developed to our advantage..."
Its something that will boil over sooner rather than later, as it always does.
Japan has too much pride, and won't apologise or acknowledge when they fuck up, and that is counterintuitive once you remember their values in honor and such.
I think pretty much every culture has a problem where they ignore realities and just double down on whatever they have previously done. Pretty much everyone rationalizes everything so that righteousness to them takes the appearance of whatever will benefit themselves. They use boogeymen and platitudes to avoid having to truly address things.
A.K.A: Hikikomori are just lazy millennials who aren't willing to work, find any interesting hobbies and rely on escaping reality.
@Kyle Towe Good for you.
surprised you didn't also mention that gundam became popular due to the fact it was really a story about the horrors of war and nuclear energy as the mobile suit system runs off a fusion reactor (albeit a cold one)
Good video, although the lines between shonen, shoujo etc. being considered genres is a bit weird when transitioning to anime. They are technically demographics based off of which magazine they're specialized in but the word loses meaning in categorizing anime despite not being genres (case in point, Yotsuba is a shonen manga yet is under the slice of life genre.) It becomes even more confusing when websites mix up demographics and genres side by side, not helping the case lol.

Leaving that arbitrary ban aside, I found this history of anime and the otaku phenomenon really fascinating. I only grasped a tiny portion of it while reading 'Starting Point' and 'Turning Point', a two-part compendium of very illustrative interviews on Hayao Miyazaki's life and work in the animation industry. I'll definitely check the sources you mention; the social and psychological side of any fandom (or, rather, any hermetic group behavior) is quite interesting.

Very surprised how you were able to keep hentai out of the video. Very well researched. "Moe has no english equivalent...if it makes you 'doki doki' and want to hug it, then its moe."
Wouldnt the english equivalent be something in the line of "cute" or "cutesy"?
No, that's a very common way of misunderstanding the word/concept, if you are not a Japanese speaker. Cutesy/adorable is more along the lines of "Kawaii". "Doki Doki" is often used when depicting a rapid heart beat, or a heart skipping a beat (can be used in other ways too). "Doki Doki" is can be seen used as a response to affection, excitement, or anticipation, but that's not always the case. Not everything that makes your heart go "Doki Doki" is necessarily cute.. it may not even be positive. While "Moe" CAN be depicting something seen as cute, charming, romantic, or what have you (Something can be "Moe", and "Kawaii" at the same time), not everything that is "Kawaii" is considered to be "Moe". It doesn't just mean "that's cool" either, something "uncool" can still be "Moe", it's used to depict a variety of emotions/experiences. For a far too simplistic example: The killer in a horror film made my heart go "Doki Doki" during a scary scene, depending on my perception of that character, they may be "Moe" to me. Yeeeetttt that in no way makes them "Kawaii", and it's different than "Kowai" meaning scary. Plenty of other things may be scary to me, but not really "Moe". "Moe" often needs to involve going "Doki Doki", but something can definitely make you feel "Doki Doki" without it being "Moe" at all. This is why the meaning of "Moe" may differ amongst Japanese people, and circumstance. Also why there's no direct English translation lol just explaining the concept seems confusing to people. We try to make a general translation, but honestly any English translation would be leaving quite a lot of context out, and oversimplifying what "Moe" is. Despite being used as a descriptive word, it is more of a complex concept based on the individuals view of a particular thing. In short, what ultimately ends up making something "Moe" is simply just that.. it is "Moe".. aha I know it's weird to wrap your head around.

"The worst low"? One too many adjectives. And Anime is just a medium, there's no inherent quality or lack thereof compared to "Bad Hollywood sequels" which by definition are bad.
How is it favoritism, guy? I hate bad Hollywood movies the same way I despise bad animes. That doesn't mean I consider Hollywood to be the lowest form of entertainment because of decentralized quality.
Why is supporting anime tantamount to supporting bad anime in your mind?
Not if God hears my prayers.

7:10 sounds an awful lot like modern American politicians, wealthy and middle-class: out-of-touch with the economic reality on the ground. Its harder than ever to get a living wage here, nevermind long-term job security. And all the better-off have to say about it are the same old, tired talking points about "lazy parasites" and how we should further our education with all the spare time & money which many of us DON'T have.
But hey, at least the similar social/economic forces that produced more extreme otaku culture in Japan might also spawn a new generation of awesome protest music over here. Which many of us will probably end-up pirating for aforementioned reasons.
I assume it's just going to continue much the same as it has, only with more and more riots.
+Mana C Get a skill, like Plumbing or being an Electrician. Go to trade school, that's my advice.
novidsinthischannel Thankfully our work culture is nowhere near as toxic and far more flexible. You need to allow people to move from job to job without ruining their life. Here in the US what we need to do is massively fund college and also encourage people to enter trade schools. Too many people only remember the difficulties of grads getting jobs right after the recession hit. In reality college is the top investment dollar for dollar in the whole US. Especially more math focused classes. Automation will reduce wages for unskilled labor while increasing demand for skilled labor. That's the finding of experts on the subject.
If we're going to completely overhaul anything, it should be our education system.
Now *THAT* system is a classic example of doing the same, (or similar), thing(s) over & over again and expecting different results.
It's also pretty counter-intuitive to throw more money - than we already have - at something that's, (at it's core), about 2 centuries old.
And for some reasons Conservative refuse to learn from europe and reduce military funding and starting to have a aviable good school for everyone, by giving them more funding and reforms. The willingness to change is nessesary to avoid such problems. But that would be ar too social appearently. Not that everything is bad, but is changing some things bad, beginning with the mindset, especially by politicans, republicans especielly, democrats are by nature more progressive.

This AMV sounds so edgy. They just forgot Shadow the Hedgehog.
This AMV sounds perfect since Crawling should probably be considered as the anthem of AMV creators in general
In the 80's there was a recurrent theme with genocide in anime also, frequently by big explosions. I think it was still a faint echo from the atomic bomb. I can remember animes like Urotsukidoji, Genocyber, Samurai Warriors (this last meant for younger people), among others with lesser degrees of death. They not only depict continuously the death of uncountable amounts of people, but they even rationalize it into making it appear those people deserve to die.
hey this needs to be added to your down the rabbit hole playlist.
Thanks for letting me know.
No mention of Space Pirate Captain Harlock from the 70's and 80's?
Yeah, I noticed he skips right from Heidi to Gundam, basically cutting out everything in between (except Uresei Yatsura). But it's a 40 minute summation of ALL of anime, what can you do?

7:06 - Old capitalists, conservatives, and politicians using the younger generations as scapegoats to cover up their own greedy shortsighted mistakes and the disastrous results born from which...At least nothing like that would ever occur here in America (he sarcastically states).
Enshohma lol, I guess old conservative fucks are the same in all countries.

Sorry, you're far to hyperbolic to take seriously in the RUclips comment section on a video about anime of all places.
Also adding a "yeah, that's right" as if your points are irrefutable is far too funny!
It's Whataboutism, anyway. Even if "The Liberals" were everything a random psychotic Republican would claim through frothed lips, the fact that callous conservative mindsets have caused great damage to society with unforseen consequences is immutable, and that's the subject at hand.
when postmodernism came up I couldn't help thinking "of course, the cancer that's killing humanity had to be behind this"
I know I've heard the song from 16:50 before. What anime is it from?
That AMV speaks to me on an emotional level
You did an impressive amount of research but it is apparent that not enough was done about cartoons. Cartoons were only toy-marketed until the early 90s, before the Simpsons and DuckTales revolutionized the industry by making cartoons first and merchandising second. By the late 90s to early 2000s when Yu Gi Oh! and Pokemon aired, the only successful cartoon that was primarily made to sell toys was Transformers, which is traditionally a collaboration between Japanese and American studios anyways. There were some shows like Spongebob Squarepants that also did really well in merchandising, but that was due to their success as a cartoon, not the other way around. As a result, Yu Gi Oh! and Pokemon did extraordinarily well as merchandising-first shows; it was due to their uniqueness in the Western market, not to them happening to follow market standards.
"The average age of Hikkikimori is 31", as a 31 year old westerner, some of the pressures of work, money and the expectations of others have had significant pressures on me, to the point where I feel much more isolated at this age that before and because of the experiences you collect it can create resentment, but thankfully the UK is not nearly as high pressure as Japan in that regard, and I can totally understand the Hikkikomori's apathy towards life, in a country where it seems that no matter how much work you do, or how much you sacrifice, it's never enough. I at least have enough social freedoms here that despite not being the most confident, sporty, or intellectual I know I still have other avenues open to me, and that keeps me going, but in Japan, I want to take these people back with me and try to show them that it doesn't have to be like that. You don't have to be pressured by 80% of your population on who to be. It's heartbreaking
Boomers are the same the world over.
Thank you so much for this amazing presentation!
I started getting into Anime only recently. And learned so much because of both parts of this video.
Excellent content!
Did part 1 get deleted?
I remember being in early middleschool coming home every day to watch a strange television show about some dumb blonde who fought cool badguys and sexy monsters. That show? Sailor Moon.
At the time I hadn't considered Sailor Moon to be Japanese. I just thought it was a sudden change in American style from other shows at the time, like Power Puff Girls. I loved it.
Man. Anime has come so far, and it wasn't until society taught me that Anime was foreign did I consider it anything other than face value. I look fondly at Sailor Moon and Cowboy Bebop for helping alter me as a person and an adult.
vjm3 I still am pretty certain seeing Cowboy Beebop on ABC at 3am one morning when I was 5-6, cemented my interest in anime even further than ritually watching Dragon Ball and DBZ every morning
Why the hell are you subscribe to Projared??

Moe has always been whatever gives you the warm and fuzzies. It's something you truly love and makes you feel good. While it's so closely associated with anime of girls with huge eyes and doing cute things, it goes beyond just that particular aesthetic.
I wish more Anime Subgenres were just onomatopoeias:
* Violence: Uwack! (Man stabbed with a sword)
* Magical Girl: Yo-oo-oo-oo-oh! (Sounds girl makes spinning many times to appear in a magical costume)
* Sex: Auogh! (Not gonna explain)
(Exclamation Points would be required)

Something I think got missed: The word otaku started as an honorific suffix that was meant to be extremely formal. Its use had more or less disappeared around the 1970's but was prominently used by main characters Hikaru Ichijyo and Lin Minmay in _Super Dimension Fortress Macross_ despite being close friends and love interests - it was meant to convey their close respect despite their dubious courtship but instead made them seem awkward. Fans of the show started using this to refer to each other regardless of being familiar enough with each other that -san or even -kun or -chan should have been the go-to honorific. Outsiders used the term mockingly to refer to the awkwardness of such an antiquated formality between friends. It quickly came to mean any awkward, semi-obsessive hobbyist, and the largest group known as otaku in general are trainspotters.
oh wow thats interesting and ur username just got a lot less self depricating

Lmao I thought Otaku was a specific anime or something

My first exposure to anime was Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. They were so strange to me but I couldn't get enough.
Salaryman jobs must be an evolution of the feudal attitude that got phased out in the Edo Period.
A salaryman is an office worker. In the same sense corporations and their wage-slaves all around the world can be linked to feudalism. But it's not a Japan-specific thing.
Zabeus, hm
Damn feudal American corporatism.
It's common in India also that our parents never kicks us out from home or we can say that we can live our whole life if we want to in our home even after marriage but yeah we have to do work for money
I love the term "dens of otaku". It is beautifully fitting, somehow. I don't know how.

Im afraid to watch anime. Im afraid i might like it and my life will be over.
Give it a go. Anime is a mix bag and can be a hit or a miss. There is so much that I doubt you will be addicted with mixed quality.
Nah its not as obsessive as you think, I watched an anime once and never really had a strong interest in it after that, I've only dabbled in a series or two over the years.
But hey that might just be my preference in anime that's non-addictive.
@@upincloud244 Dude there are so many genres. What you describe doesn't even come close to what anime actually is.
@@sladejosephwilson2300 lol I just watched Naruto and death note and that's it, I'm pretty sure those series are some of the most popular animes. They're not addictive.
@@upincloud244 Those are overrated shonen. I use to watch those kind of anime a lot. Then I got sick of that genre then I switched to watching other genres from different eras instead. Much better now. It's like night and day and a lake vs an ocean.
Anime is generic and repetitive only if you watch shonen, ecchi, and the big anime/popular anime only. Funny enough those genres are considered to be additives. More like generic. However they can be good.

Have you thought maybe he is an artist who receives a large amount of money through commissions?
@@raspdere the joke is about how expensive they are. You've either missed or ignored the point.
@@xjunkxyrdxdog89 No, actually. I answered your question. If it was a joke, then I fail to see the humor.

Omg strongbad’s emails! Japanese cartoon is right up there with trogdor imo
Oh god AMVs...
Cringed so hard, I was eating those up like a fucking idiot for so long.
I made a few at some point, lol.
Edit: I'm sure hikikomori came about because they wanted excuses to stay home not because of the overbearing impossible standards, expectations and pressure put on them in a time where it was and is more difficult than ever to get a well paying job and become a salaryman. It's always everyone's fault but that of the oppressors, in this case out of touch, out clueless businessmen far too deep up their own asses and so full of pride they actively refuse to acknowledge or even consider that it might be more than just "excuses" and "laziness" or that anxiety and depression exist and are real problematic diseases. I struggle to use the word "oppressor" because of the connotations with tumblr but I don't really have a better one and my English isn't great. Also this video's from last year, sorry about the pointless rant.
For some reason the part 1 is blocked in Spain and Italy :(
