My Neopets account may be one of the oldest on the site. Problem is that I forgot the birthdate I used to login. I was 9 years old when I made it and I thought I was smart by using a fake birthdate to make myself seem older. I outsmarted myself it seems 😬

I did the same thing, though I contacted customer support and they provided the birth-date no questions asked. Though that was a few years back so no clue if someone would get the same results. Should try that shit - you might have a goldmine on your hands.

We had very restricted computer time as kids. My Neopet was subsequently never healthy.
They aren't starving. A few years ago, Neopets had sent out an email saying that in order to purge unused and spam accounts, anyone that hadn't logged on within six months of a date that was given would have their account deleted. I discovered the email a few days after that date and sure enough, my account from years prior was nowhere to be found.

man, I remember being a fifth grade and flipping out when I discovered jelly world. And transmogrifying my alien dude. Good times. Some time later, neopet plushies made their way into my local mall and I was surprised to see it was still a thing. This was a super nostalgic video.
Neopets recently had a booth at San Diego Comic Con advertising the site and were giving codes for items. The booth was very busy with people asking questions.
This was the first time in 10 years that I've seen any physical presence of the site and it is slightly exciting.
@Lyn indeed. It takes years to get a booth at SDCC because there is such a long wait list. Perfect timing to be able to get in. Shame with Covid happening, tons of events are getting canceled, including SDCC.

I remember my mom showed my brother and I this game when we were around 6 or 7 years old (circa 2002-2003ish) and it was the best thing ever. Years went by and I never even though about it until about 2 weeks ago when I decide to create an account for the hell of it. I was surprised to see that it was largely unchanged and honestly it felt like coming home

No mention of Neo Cash and that whole monetisation tactic? I hated it when that was introduced because it meant I couldn't essentially 'complete' the game without paying. Club Penguin was much worse though so I don't care about its closure

Yeah, I'm surprised Neocash was never brought up, considering it was pretty much a prototype for the modern day over-reliance on loot-boxes and microtransactions in video games. Yeah, Neopets was certainly ahead of it's time... even if it was in all the wrong ways.
Honestly the only time I spent any real money on the site was to get a premium account so I could get a fifth neopet (of course, at the time I was too dumb to realize I could just mske a second account and get four more pets for free)
You think Club Penguin is bad? Habbo Hotel had a whole gambling scheme going on, where you could turn your ingame cash into real money. People would work in "companies" for hours on end to get their hands on some of those gold coins.
Club Penguin is tame in comparison.
Honestly the saddest thing is that Neopets will pretty much be dying once Flash dies. All the games are for the most part going to be unplayable and I imagine a lot of site functionality will die with that as well. At that point, who knows if they'd even keep the scraps alive.

Yeah, as a kid, I thought they would slow down my computer, or make me buy things, so I I never clicked on them.
I remember were a few pretty good sponsored flash games. There was some game about making Pillsbury Toaster Strudels which I remember being really fun, but once the ad deal ran out, the game left too which sucked. I just played them for fun. I knew mom wouldn't buy me half the stuff in them anyway. (Though we did get the toaster strudels. Whether as a result of the flash game or not I don't remember.)

Which due to lack of funds mostly don't do much with the site.
Neopets used to be great due to the popularity of it, comparative to how Pokemon was in our elementary schools. It was exciting and you had to work hard to get a cool new color. Now, it's a shell of it's former self. However, the player base are mostly old players. So it being a tight-knit community is what keeps some there. I still play, but the new and exciting part of it has faded into nostalgia and good-ol' friendship.
The Day of Sin was the funniest thing that's happened on Neopets in quite some time

Neopets was the perfect example of corporate greed. A site that originally offered children hours of fun slowly consumed by branding and exploitation. Nowadays, you can see games that still exist with other brands slapped on them, and NeoCash is still as in-demand as ever. If steps aren't taken to reduce the clear greed that the site shows, then the population will continue its downward spiral, as those who loved the site before take their wallets, and more importantly, their CHILDREN...away from the site.
SnivyTries I fully blame NeoCash for the decline. The ads were easily ignored, and premium currency always pissed me off. I dropped out around 2005.

Oh boy this will be good. Neopets was my childhood
Neopets was cool because at the time it was free online pokemon with a bunch of minigames, but it was easy to lose interest because there wasn't really a long-term goal besides collecting stuff for your pet. Even once they introduced villains, they would be short-term things that would just be to introduce a new level or something, but then even the new levels would have familiar minigames in them, so... whatever. It was fun enough, and the design still holds up (since its still just online free pokemon) but without something like a mainstream movie to establish a strong canonical villain that casual visitors to the site would care about, it just became a time waster that you eventually lost time for.
I remember how the first thing Jumpstart did when they bought the site was crash the economy *hard.*
They introduced a new daily that was supposed to help clear out a lot of junk items people would get, but instead it ended up inflating literal garbage to tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of neopoints. And, oh god, the server migrations. Even with decent internet, it would take way longer than was needed for a page to load, and considering how many page refreshes that site uses on the norm just for navigation, it made it absolutely unbearable. It was around this time that I remember I stopped playing.
I do miss my main account, though, and my side accounts I used to farm neopoints and rare items lol

I distinctly have two memories of Neopets:
1) having a bunch of McDonald's Neopets plushes that I stored in a maroon bag.
2) wanting a Meowclops plushie, but never bringing it up because I felt I was too old (9).
3) going through the Zazzle shop just to see all the different designs for each Neopet.
Neopets is still fun to play once you figure out how to ACTUALLY make money (god bless Julie for the food club video) but most of it is running on nostalgia lol
Can you explore the history of Dragon Fable and Adventure Quest? I used to play those all of the time as a kid but I have no idea what happened to them. They were kind of the progenitors of the pay-to-play model seen so aggressively on mobile apps today.

Darkest Faerie was a surprisingly good PS2 Zelda-like RPG that I still consider a hidden gem to this day. There were a few bugs, sure, but no more than other game out on the ps2. Still have a soft spot for that one.

I'm playing right now because it's the 25th anniversary year. They hand out NP like candy these days, but it's funny to see how much wildly broken stuff is still on the site.
Real funny to see the "Featured 2X NP Game of the Day" be something literally unplayable.
(Like Ultimate Bullseye refuses to count any of my hits - they hit the target but it just says "missed" every time. Or the Breakout clone loads but the ball freezes in place right after I launch it.)

As someone who just played through it, it's not the best made game. The worst thing is how the final boss fight and end scene is really lack luster considering you've been fighting her for ages.

Agreed. If it wasnt as buggy as it is, itd honestly be one of the better hidden gems. But as its, it's a damn solid game that is pretty fun. You can tell the crew had limited time and resources and still went all out and pushed what they could do to the limit. They didnt care if it was neopets. They wanted to make a good game

Just found your channel and am hugely impressed! So well done, the quality of writing, narration, music and editing is some of the best Ive seen in this genre. Proof: I watched several multi-hours’ long videos focusing on gaming/gamers when I have zero interest in them- now thats an accomplishment. Looking forward to more content (esp that which features interesting internet phenomena, more than that with a gaming focus, just saying) Bravo!

I remember having a nice store. Restocking it was such a pain but also so entertaining. I loved going to the bank daily to collect my interest. Paintbrushes? All my pets were painted with the best of them! Then I just felt like giving up and actually closed down my account. To think that was around 12 years ago already...
Whereas now I think it's hilarious, the more I think about it, the more creepy I find the scientology shit. Neopets was my childhood, to think I was so close to being indoctrinated for a cult is kind of scary.
My mom made a Neopets account years ago and she still uses It. And belivr kt or not, her account even got hacked a few months ago.

The hacking has been happening often the past year. Submit a Neopets 'ticket' on their support page and she'll get her account back. My mom still plays too, she's 46. Hahah.

Petpet Park was my life when I was younger I really hope they bring it back for nostalgia sake so I can play it again and think about the good old days.
