It's weird that someone took time out of their day to stalk and confront someone over an opinion on the internet, as harsh as it was I'm not gonna put my life on hold over something and/or someone so trivial. I called 988, I wasn't in a place where I was going to do anything but my feelings were rock bottom. The lady I spoke to was the sweetest woman ever. I could tell she was working from home, juggling kids. I thanked her so much for hearing me and just being someone who understands. I thanked her for working as a first responder because I can imagine that the calls she gets all day aren't easy. We both got a little emotional with gratitude, and it kicked off an upward trend in my life. Republicans, for years, have been pushing for this constantly but the moment someone, unabashedly, feels no sympathy for the thing they've been promoting...all of a sudden is awful and wrong. The anger is there, it's valid. What I would ask him to do, however, is to talk to non-political content creators about this. I think his biggest issue now is talking to people who'll bad faith the situation, people like Rubin who, as Phil pointed out, is complicit in the rhetoric. I'd like to see him talk to bigger content creators who aren't political but want to be educated on the subject on why the Republicans deserve no sympathy for this, especially since it was another Republican behind the whole thing.

The talk about parental rights in this case is insane. It's not about the rights of parents here, it's about teachers not being required by law to snitch on their students who talk to them about things in confidence. If a student can't talk to their parents or teachers they are going to be alienated for both. It's to protect kids and give them a safe place they can talk through issues before they might go to their parents. It also means that if a student wants to be called by a nickname to try new things then teachers have to tell their parents that "little Samantha in my class told me that she wants to go by Sam now" which is insane

Teachers as representatives of the State, do not have the right to keep information from parents pertaining to their children.
Parents are vested with the ability to exert the rights of their children until age of majority, but to do so must be aware of such to even do so. By allowing the State to hide activities, actions and information from parents you essentially gut the parents ability to do so.
Governments must be transparent as can be, but particularly in instances where they have direct control and supervision of minors. Your intent may be well placed, but your methodology is flawed and the ramifications thereof dire.

@@darklelouchg8505 Ok but parents do not have the right to circumvent their child's autonomy through mandates that information that their child chose not to share with them must be disclosed to them. Teachers are only mandated reporters when it comes to information that is harmful to the a child or to others in regards to a child. That does not include a child questioning their gender identity, which is not directly harmful to a child or others in regards to a child, such as them wanting to harm another child.
Parents right to act in the best interest of their child does not mean they have to know everything about their child at all times. Forced outing laws and practices only serve to strip children of their abilities to make decisions as to who they want to tell and when they want to tell things to. For instance a child tells their teacher they don't feel like a boy and would like to not be addressed as such is not an something a teacher has to report to parents. If the child wants their parents to know they will tell them. Also if teachers are agents of the government then why then do they have to report information of this nature to parents and not the state. It seems like people want teachers to be agents of parents in the classroom instead of doing their job and teaching.

A true veteran knows who and what they enlisted for, and that's for the right for America and its inhabitants to be free and to uphold the American way. One of the absolute biggest things we hold dear in this country is our freedom of speech. The fact that this "veteran" targeted an elderly woman who used that right to say something he didn't like, silenced her, and had her lose her job for it is disappointing and sad. I’d like to think that I helped a lot of people. We had several regulars who we helped keep going. This reminded though that last year I was talking to someone who had recently lost a friend to suicide. I shared my experience with the hotline and she proceeded to shit all over me. She told me that we were awful and never helped anyone. Maybe I shouldn’t take it so personally, but that hurt a lot. Maybe we couldn’t save everyone, but I’m glad that resources like that exist. The reason why I wanted to work there is because I needed their help at one point. There’s no real point to this story. I’m just venting into the void. What I found was mildly horrifying.
You're basically being worked to the bone in shitty warehouses where there might not even be working air conditioning, your location would be tracked via armbands and you were expected to keep working and only take a handful of breaks.
In short, days in the warehouse were described by basically everyone I spoke to as being extremely boring yet extremely chaotic and stressful all at once.
To quote one of the people I spoke to: "The job sucks, but it puts food on the table if you can put up with it. Otherwise, they're always hiring the next person available due to the high turnover."

Regarding that school bill, I went to high school in Indiana and was a member of the school's "Poetry Club." That's in quotes because even though we *did* create and share poetry, it also off-the-records served as a LGBT "safe space" and a mental health support group. The club was ran mostly by us students, while the teacher who "officially" ran the club sat in the back so anyone who needed an adult to talk to could go to her.
Unfortunately, the city's school board passed an ordinance that a teacher who learned *any* student was LGBT or was possibly dealing with mental health issues *must* report that information to both the dean and that student's parents or face being terminated. This effectively disbanded the club. Our teacher actually admitted to us that she would never "snitch" on us, but we knew that there would always be a chance someone would let the wrong person know she wasn't snitching and she would lose her job, so we all decided to shut the club down.

    I'm a bisexual Texan.
I was never taught about sexuality, I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood and never talked about my attraction to men. I thought i was gay, because I only knew gay or straight. Since I thought I was gay, I wasn't sure how my mom, my dad, my brothers and sisters would react. I kept it in and hid it, I talked about it only at school because I had heard families disowning gay children and my homophobic classmates told me if they had gay children they'd beat or kill them and one deeply religious girl and her boyfriend condemned me to hell and called me slurs to my face, but I didn't mind losing friends as long as I didn't lose my family. I told some of my teachers and friends I trusted. Thankfully, none of them told my parents, but in my junior year I eventually told my mom and sisters on my own terms, they were accepting of me and my older brother learned eventually, but to this day I never told my dad.
As a queer teen, I'm grateful I never got outed to my family until I was ready. I legit feared I'd lose them if they found out, but thankfully most of my family was accepting. However I know that isn't everyone and some people have legit fears of coming out especially to their family

I am an Air Force veteran and graduated High School in 2000. My family are very VERY evangelical Christians and my father would talk about when he was school if someone got caught “being gay” that they would beat the shot out of them. Also I grew up and saw the actions of the men who killed Matthew Shepherd. I say all of that because back when I was just a toddler maybe 5 or 6 I remember being in Sunday school and having a crush on a kid who was the same age and who I knew pretty well, but I didn’t know it was “bad” to have that crush. Fast forward to around 1994 and internally I knew I was gay but I’ve always struggled with that because I still am a Christian but apparently not a proper one anymore, anyways, I struggle because my whole family have seen me dress up in my younger sisters dresses and by the time I was a freshman in High school I knew that I was gay but also that god made me that way for a reason because I can definitely say that I was born gay. My sister knew and told me that she’d keep it a secret for me and that worked until all my friends and other classmates all knew without me having to say it out loud. My senior year I felt it was time to tell my mom and when I did she told me that I had two weeks to find a place of my own and that I had to move out. Since then we still talk and now my dad and younger brother know, even my grandparents knew but have been much more caring than my parents but to this day we have a rocky relationship because they want me to change and even though I tried being straight during high school, after high school, before the Air Force and after the Air Force I just felt like it was all a lie and that I wasn’t being me. I’m glad that the younger generations have benefited from the hard work that our activism has created but I really fear for the future. I
Also glad that your family has been supportive towards you, it’s always nice to hear that.

I'd start with, "Hello, you don't know me, and I don't know you, but I'm not feeling well and need someone to talk to." Surprisingly, many strangers listened to me talk about my emotions and struggles, often late at night. There was a sense of security in knowing they wouldn't judge me. I wasn't suicidal, but I had no one to share my feelings with. I feel that some of those strangers saved me. I am happy to hear that there is help for those that need it.

No parent owns their children, nor do they own the rights to make their children live a life they choose. You can guide and advise and give your best ideas, most likely also having rules while they are young and need your experiential knowledge to stay safe, but ultimately they are their own person, not your property. It is also most likely that these parents whose kids aren't ready to talk to them come from household with strict judgements about different lifestyles from their own, and therefore these kids will keep this part away from their parents for as long as possible. It is also insane to expect teachers to step into these kinds of messes.

Although I don't really agree with the way Destiny is going about it, I completely understand his vitriol. For years the right has been openly mocking political violence when it happens to anyone on the left. From the example of Paul Palosi shown on stream to Ryan Carson, 31 year old progressive activist was attacked and stabbed TO DEATH in New York last year. It's actually crazy to see the double standards online. The problem is the left holds their own side to a higher standard, while condemning the right for rolling in the mud. While on the other hand, the right hand waves the mud rolling and then condemns the left when they do anything even remotely out of line. It's a classic rules for thee but not for me situation.
You can even see a classic example of this in the exact Piers video where Dave Rubin asks Destiny if he will condemn the violent actors in BLM to which Destiny replies yes, then he asks Dave if he'll condemn the violence at Jan6th to which Dave starts to try to make excuses. As awkward as it feels, I agree with Destiny's take. I think his entire point is that he has no sympathy for people who are supporting a person (Trump) who tried to incite an insurrection of the country that he genuinely loves.
People are hyper-focusing on the fact that the guy who was shot is an "innocent firefighter", but for half of that description I imagine Destiny would not consider supporting an insurrectionist to be an innocent stance. I would personally add that someone's job does not absolve them from any immoral actions or statements. Many people in my family are or were firefighters, yet half of them were alcoholics, unfaithful to their wives, or physically and emotionally abusive (or all of the above). We've built some professions up over the years as paragons of virtue in our society, but we forget that the people working in those professions are not saints. They're normal people and they are just as fallible as the rest of us.
So while I don't necessarily agree with the way Destiny is going about it on Twitter, I completely understand the sentiment he has expressed on his own stream and on the Piers show. The conservative voices in media, especially alternative media, have been extremely antagonistic, violent, dehumanizing, and dishonest for the entirety of Trump's political timeline. Now they're finally seeing what it feels like to be on the receiving end of that kind of rhetoric and, surprise surprise, it doesn't feel good.
One other thing Destiny mentions is that the left has tried for so long to take the moral high ground and not resort to this kind of rhetoric or underhanded tactics. However, this has provided them with none of the benefits and all of the drawbacks. They are not motivating their voters to either vote for them or vote against they're opponents. Meanwhile, the high temp conservative rhetoric and sketchy tactics have given them all of benefits and none of the drawbacks. Look at January 6, the attack on Pelosi's husband, the culture war issues (transgender, crt, vaccines), etc. They will take zero responsibility for anything negative that came of the volatile rhetoric they employed on those topics, but were actually gleeful to reap the rewards, aka emotionally charged voters.
Ultimately, I think Destiny is tired of the hypocrisy from the right and is in a unique position where he is relatively insulated from the massive amount of pushback he'll get on this. I imagine the dude probably has enough money to stop streaming and chill out very comfortably for the rest of his life, but this topic obviously matters enough to him that he would risk all of it to speak his truth and his values. With all of that in mind, I don't think this is as crazy as people are making it out to be.

When i worked at a sleep away camp back in 2019 we were told as part of our training to tell our supervisors (who would contact the parents) if we noticed anything was up with the campers or if they told us anything--like if they came out. And while I undetstand that things like bullying or an eating disorder should absolutely be told to parents, I remembered being a camper at that very camp and dealing with so much homophobia as an openly queer kid. Imagine opening up to a trusted adult about your sexuality, something that isnt hurting you or anyone else, and that adult breaking your trust and outing you to your parents. Even if your parents arent the type to punish you for your sexuality, being robbed of the ability to tell them yourself is horrible. I remember after I got fired from a job I called 988 because I was far away from family and wasn't certain whether I would get evicted from my apartment. I was 25 and it was the first tiime i'd been on my own in a few years post-pandemic and graduating college. I was on the phone with a live person in under a minute.. calling at 2am probably helped.. they really walked me out of some dark thoughts. So glad it exists.

I don't think anything could have saved him but if 988 can save even one person, it's an amazing service. Thank you for highlighting the good it does even at the cost of the burnout.

I worked at the Amazon warehouse in Kansas City for over 2 years. It was hell there; the building was hot all year round. Managers refused to add more fans. Forced overtime, especially during the prime week and what they consider "Peak season." "Peak" is around 8 weeks, and my typical 4-day, 10-hour shift work week was changed to a 5-day, 11-hour work week. The rates they expect are crazy for one person to do, for example (600 items an hour in stow, 400 items an hour in pick, 200 items an hour in pack, 1200 items an hour in (can't remember what this one is called it's part of sort side in pack), 600 items per hour in sort.) Given all of this, I'm 100 percent not surprised by the report on Amazon. They could improve things by making sure the temperatures in the warehouse are bearable and by lowering the rate they expect. I can guarantee that most of the injuries that happen there are caused by trying to reach these high rates.

The people who want these laws are the sort of helicopter parents who would absolutely know if their kid was trans or wanting to use different pronouns. They want the laws so they can punish their kids for doing something at school that they have been told not to do at home. They also fully think that if they 'catch it early' a therapist will make their kids cis and straight.

I feel like this is an over generalization of the people concerned with this and why, yes in some cases you may be correct bad parenting can alienate children, but contrary to that bad mentorship or grooming can alienate children from their loved ones. In any case it seems like a violation of guardianship, most schools/curriculums are out of date and teachers are ill equipped and struggle to deal with even a base level of education for children today, so why would we assume they could reliably and responsibly take on such an important and impactful role especially given the brief nature of their interactions with young students.

    • @venihiam1591

@@ollie3743the level of interaction that teacher have with kids is a lot. Like from the age of 5-18 student are in school 8 hours a day and in earlier grades the student tend to stay with one teacher instead of moving around from class to class. So teachers interact with students sometimes more than their own parents.
Also that's a problem with school funding and not with teachers. Plus parents don't have a right to know what kids chose to go by out in the world even at school. If a child wants to called by a nickname or another name all together at school that's fine. If it lets them continue to learn and grow than I don't see the problem with just going with it as long as it's not profane in language. Like a parent shouldn't be medaling in the classroom on this level. It makes teachers less able to do their jobs if they are constantly afraid of going to jail because parents want to know if their child was breathing to loudly.

@ollie3743 I'm not sure if you're a parent or not, but I am. I think any parent that is for forced outing policies should reflect on their relationship with their child. Think less about their "rights" as a parent and more about their "responsibilities" as a parent. I know responsibilities is a much longer, heavier word. However, they need to spend more time on why the person they're raising doesn't feel safe telling them that information and less on how they can get schools to abuse their children on their behalf.

Back in the dancing hot dog days, I vividly remember the first time I noticed my face being altered by a filter. It was something seemingly innocuous but my freckles were removed and my eye shape and distance slightly altered. It was one of the first times I had truly experienced an uncanny-valley version of myself. Immediately I recognized that this had great potential to harm my self-image, and also that, like you so often point out, the technology would only become more advanced with time. I am eternally grateful to myself for perceiving the danger, making that decision, and sticking to it.
