I remember 9 year-old me in my first Barbarian Invasion campaign trying to hold on to the Goths’ starting settlement at all costs because I didn’t know what I was doing. Of course, the Huns came around and kicked my ass, and I lost the campaign in about 15 turns. LOL. I think that’s part of what makes the Goth campaign so much fun. You have no choice but to abandon your initial settlement and flee from the Huns into enemy territory.
It’s very historical too, historically the Goths were a small barbarian tribe beyond the Danube, they were driven from their homeland by the huns and with the eastern Roman Empires permission they crossed the Danube into roman territory, yet the Romans treated them horribly, but they eventually took an opportunity to rise up when roman forces were redirected to deal with invasions to the east. the Goths pillaged though the countryside and sacked an important roman city, (I can’t remember what the name of it was, but it was in Greece somewhere) eventually the emperor went over to deal with them but he was defeated and was killed by the Goths, Rome was forced to compromise and the Goths were hired as auxiliaries by the empire but under king Alaric they turned against the empire , and Rome was sacked, by the time of western Rome’s collapse a group of Goths took land in Iberia while another group called the Ostrogoths took northern Italy, you had the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths but both peoples were conquered. The Ostrogoths in Justinian reconquests and the visgoths, much later when the Islamic moors conquered Spain. So it seems you can play a fairly accurate historical campaign with the goths
@@baldrickthedungspreader3107 >Goths >Small Ok there goes the comment to the trash. Even the first sentence makes me roll my eyes. Even divided into many sub-tribes, Goths were the LARGEST of the Germanics, and the most pain for the Dominate Romans.
I take iazyges then move my primary army north with my greatest generals and hold at the bridges along the river near the sarmatians, i then attempt to funnel the huns and vandals into battle on the bridges and defeat them until they aren’t a threat
I also played as them when I was 8-9 years old and somehow I managed to survive an uprising in Colonia Dacia and I discovered the first emerging faction every in any of my total war gameplays: Ostrogoths. I was like: wow, they are exactly the same as me but they are yellow! And I have to fight them. Awesome. Of course they kicked my **s
Arian Priests represent :P Seriously though, Arianism was a branch of Christianity popular among the Roman Emperors, and apparently embraced by the Goths. There was a man named Arius the Benevolent that lived in Alexandria Egypt, and his teachings were quite popular in Europe for a time. Most of the Population of Western and Eastern Rome however decided upon a different sort of Christianity, which eventually branched into Roman Catholicism and Greek Orthodox. While Homoousian Christianity (catholic, orthodox, and protestant) are sometimes referred to as Trinitarians, technically Arians were also Trinitarian, the difference being that Arians believed in the Son and the Father as separate entities, with the Son existing in Heaven prior to his birth upon the Earth, and taking a large role in the creation of the mortal realm. Arius's teachings created a controversy within the Roman Empire, which was for the first time highly debated at the Nicaean Council of 325 AD, and there maintained a split stance between Arian and Homoousian until the Second Council in 381 AD where the Homoousians prevailed. Even so, the Barbarian tribes continued to follow Arianism at least until after the sacking of Rome in 455 AD.
The goths are a really interesting faction with an interesting starting location. A small yet well-rounded roster, you can field all infantry, all cavalry armies and be succesful either way. Special mention goes to the Goth Raiders, one of the better archer units in Barbarian Invasion. Eastern Archers will beat them in a archery contest, but raiders will beat those Romans if they manage to get into melee. And they're quite good archers.
@Belisarius How about making even less provinces? That would be even more challenging. This way you only make the game more boring and less action packed. You could have always made the provinces poorer
@@iamcleaver6854 it is not hard indeed, but if there are lots of provinces the game becomes repetitive and extremely long, which results in a boring experience. I'm a fan of mods which add more provinces, but I don't think BI has so few to be a problem.
I played the Goths for the first time just recently. I decided to immediately go on the offensive against the ERE. By the time the hordes arrived in Dacia, I had already captured Sirmium, Constantinople and Thessaloniki. With these cities at hand, I could actually lose Dacia without having to worry about the consequences. My advice - which is relevant for the ERE campaign as well - that one should overload the area around Sirmium down to Thessaloniki with fortresses. In case the hordes break through, it slows down their movement without them being a serious threat to cities.
My advice would be to horde immediately and sack your starting city. You'll then want to sack Campus Iazyges as well as some of the cities belonging to the Western Roman Empire you'll be traveling past as you make your way to Italy in order to resettle in Rome. You'll then want to make your way back East in order to capture the other city you need to win the campaign.
In my first play-through as the Goths I chose to not horde. I then had both full Vandal and Roxolani hordes show up at my doorstep at the same time. I do not think I was even 20 turns into the game. So I choose to horde every time now
You can’t build ports as Goths. I found this out after I destroyed the port in Athens because I was getting culture penalties and then couldn’t build a ‘barbarian’ port for myself. 🤦♂️
I know this video is two years old but I downloaded the android version of BI recently. I am playing Goths and my economy is bad. Any advice on that? They have a limited tech tree.
It's hard as the goths to have a good economy since their buildings are pretty bad. Try to improve your fields and crops and got money sacking other provinces just to destroy every building they have and sell them later for some extra denarii
FYI Arian priests aren’t referring to the Nazis, Arianism was a version of Christianity that’s 99% the same as Christians, they just had different opinion on Jesus
This is not an easy faction to play. They start in the middle of a busy road and get run over fast. Even going south into the Balkans is tricky. All the hoards seem to come your way. You should cover the buildings for these lessor factions. The Goths cannot build ports for instance. This puts limits on ship building and trade.

Colonia Dacia itself is extremely easy to defend without walls, I actually refuse to build walls in it because it changes the settlement layout
Aryan has other connotations. Arians are the followers of the bishop Arianus.
