Facebook has been caught allowing the personal data of fifty million users - 50,000,000 - get siphoned off by political data company Cambrige Analytica and hiding it until it knew the story would come out in the press. Here’s what you can do about it.

Never had Facebook nor any other form of Social Media. In fact all but one email address I have is under fake names, as are ALL of the loyalty cards I use. I've always said, "If BIG Brother wants to know about me, he'll have to pull out a pick and shovel to do his data mining, I'm not going to just give it to him."

Throwboy I also am struggling with this... I maintain a few fb and insta accounts. I do not wish to go off the grid as I enjoy human interaction and realize that the mobile phone is a necessity in today's world even if it's just a simple flip phone. I'm in the process of archiving all of the photos that have been posted of me and buy me to my personal Facebook account in the last 10 years along with comments and dates. This is something that has been holding me back from deleting my account as well because I do not want to lose those photos as they are memories that I would like to be able to look back on. I think it would be so much cooler to have them printed up and a nice shiny book and look at them on actual paper instead of a tiny screen.

Far from it. In as much as loads of people are angry about this, there are way more who aren't. There are also others that have always believed this to happen. So they have been careful with what they post. All sites that store user data could be prone to the same acts. Apps will ask me if I want to review a restaurant I was at a couple of days back (without me having "checked in". Truth is, this is a norm that I think lots of people are not that bothered having.

    What if,
one day you post on your Facebook that you are taking a ski vacation in Colorado and staying in a nice log cabin. You tell your friends that it's a gift from your inlaws.
Seven months later you do your taxes for the IRS and find yourself punished for not declaring the value of a Colorado vacation on your income.
Folks, we're getting closer and closer to that day. It's just a matter of a little more technological advancement.

You’re wrong if you believe your personal data will disappear from Facebook’s databases once you delete your account. The data has already been harvested and it will be used. You must still do it though to prevent them from getting more data from you.

this will never end ... because there is no internal intuitive cost assessor
ask yourself, how your data extracted has impacted your day today?
ask yourself, how has data extracted, during this year, impacted your day-to-day living?
outside, "identity theft (and such)" ... most will have no real, credible, discernible ... measurable answer.
we live in a world where ... i work one hour and i am compensated "x dollars."
the extraction of personal data ... is an unknown, unverifiable cost.
so there might be revulsion against such practices. but actions will never be that strong as the known conclusive costs allocated to each of us personally is not known (unknowable).
hence, the best predictor ... these so-called abhorrent practices will go on.

You have to go to activity log and remove entries or reactions and hide friends from timelines individually month by month from the beginning of your time on FB. To delete your account is insufficient. Even on the other end of your posts, they too must delete or the record remains. This is how bots delve into other accounts not targeted but connected by interactive comments. I am up to 2013 in deletions. It is tedious, but it is better done than not.

Codeah lol as if those people care about what is legal or illegal. Murder is legal just depends on who is doing that makes it illegal

Well done. Thanks. One of the unsung positives of Fb is how they took over forum/PHPbb account management. I am a Land Rover enthusiasts and many of the Land Rover forums have moved to Fb. In fact, the community has grown and connections increased too. Some of us have discussed spinning-up our forums again (not that they ever really went away). It is mainly for these connections that I am holding off on deleting my account. It is very important to have this conversation too.

I would love to Rene but I can't because many businesses are down, accommodation and house-hunting is on there and it is the most popular common way to gain fans as an artist and spread awareness of your talent as an artist.

deleted mine years ago, foundt it last being reactivaited again after visiting an old email account i needed for changing and old service that used it to my new one, deleting your account wont really work, i deleted it again, and all they do is taking it down for a few months then it goes back up. i ended up having to contact a service in the country i live in, provided by the government, wich makes sure that online companies apply to the laws here, the law wich states that they are not allowed to keep my data when ive requested it deleted and if this is not followed then there is a fine of 4% of the gross income given to that company.

Ha ha ha....I knew something was up back when Fakebook first came out and I tried to warn people about it. They laughed at me and made it seem like I was the one who was a nutcase. I'm sure they now enjoy every aspect of their lives being sold like bootleg CD's on the street corner. :)

I love how everyone is shocked over this information, this has been happening for a long time and facebook was always very loose about securing that data because that is how they make their money. People don’t know about it because it’s all invisible to them, but I’m glad we’re all finally talking about this issue.

I already knew, so whats new. I get targeted add in windows also so now i have to use an add blocker. If it gets stuff from friends thats too bad. Everyone has to know that all you do on the web will get into the hands of anyone.
Still i think its a good thing that we protest that they can only use our info and not from our friends..

The problem is the third party apps which use the Facebook platform for log in. If you delete your Facebook, BEFORE you end your subscription to one of these (Spotify is an example), then you won't even be able to access your Spotify account to cancel it - and you will have problems stopping money going from your credit card.
