This video shows you where Bloom is in Blender 4.2. Basically you have to go to the compositor and use the glare node.

For people that absolutely cannot accept the new workflow and find the 3 extra clicks abhorrent, here is a community addon that brings back the old behavior:

pinned this. good work 😃
As someone who uses EEVEE over cycles and uses bloom a lot the old system was faster and better since you could edit it real time and no need to render l, composit and pray it works like you want it to
@@PPK3K compositor works in viewport since 4.1
@@alesjelovcan6810 oh. . . Where do you enable it? And still I have to add the node into compositor every time.
it costs money bruh
It's uniform this way. Although bloom under EEVEE was convenient, now it is unified in a single solution, not two different things which had nothing to do the one with the other. And seems the compositor can work in real time now as well.
I have been waiting for real time compositing for ages so this update has made me a happy bunny.
I liked them being seperate because they looked different and i didnt need to render to see the full preview.
Just adds a step in my motiongraphics eevee animations now and i have to render just to actually know what itll look like.
@@kylejennings819you don't need to render, you can activate the viewport compositor to have the same effect as before
It’s slower this way. 😑
@@eobet is two more clicks
They shouldn't force us to use the compositor. Slows production.
i don't mind bloom being moved to compositor (although it is objectively less convenient), what i do mind is that this bloom implementation is missing most of the controls of the previous implementation and, as you've observed, looks worse. :(
Thank you, Grant, for these videos about Blender 4.2. I'm taking baby steps to learn the craft alongside my day job. These short, to-the-point videos help me stay in touch with the development of the software and imprint notions I haven't worked much with.
I hate it >.< I used Bloom instead of Glare because it was easier not to get lost in the compositor x.x
I usually have a bloom node in my compositor on my default Blender instance.
That was dumb of the devs to remove.
i see "Use Nodes" being on by default hasnt caught on yet.
And yes the bool and glare is the place of the picture editing not for 3D modeling, yes but for games, I think that stay there from the period of when Blender is made to be a Game engine
I spent the whole day searching, and the second day too, how to make a glow in version 4.2.🙏😇 Thanks a lot!!!! ❤
Many thanks for this simple and direct demonstration of the 4.2 "bloom" technique. 👍
I MADE IT TO HIGHLIGHTS NO WAYYYY (this is MSI btw)
THANK YOU SO MUCHH!!!!!
Unfortunately this is not imporeved features. Previous bloom effect was perfect. I hate compositor nodes. Because you can not see the result quickly.
Agreed
B3D developers need to submit proposed changes to users for evaluation with their justification.
the compositor is actually very quick now
Yeah it's quite faster than before 😊 @@grabbitt
@@graphguy sorry but this is a very entitled stance to have. Blender is free software, they don't "need" your opinion before they change things. Most users probably haven't donated meaningfully to the foundation nor contributed any development time. Scattering random features makes for disorganized development. By adding it to compositing it likely streamlined things for them as well. I appreciate Grant providing a helpful video showing us the new way going forward
Stop taking away features 😡
this was so helpful thanks
Interesting. To be honest, I didn't even know about the Bloom setting in Render Properties, I found it in the compositor nodes first and have always done it that way.
Big thanks for sharing the new method! It will take some time to get used to doing this, or maybe I will write a script for the setup!
Thanks, Grant. I was thinking on why my non-emission objects glow as well. I forgot to play with the Treshold
Having to create nodes is rediculus!!!
All u had to do before is just click on BLOOM!!
I miss having bloom viewable in the viewport. I often take pictures and animate in the viewport....
No, it isn't straight forward. Straight forward was the checkbox for "Bloom".
Wow, thank you that help! Sometimes I ask myself how people figure things like that out :D
Ok but... i still want the Bloom option back 😂, there is too much steps to follow up now to get the Bloom to work 😴, i didnt liked the changes, ill stick with the older versions of Blender for now...
Thank you so much for the tutorial and for showing us how to do Bloom effect in this new version of Blender.
ty❤
Thank you very much for a wonderful lesson! 👍
Many thanks for sharing!!
Does that mean the new bloom renders properly out with transparent backgrounds so it actually shows up? I remember in old Blender when you had bloom it was in the file but never showed up like when you did the same thing in other software.
i think so yes
Thanks for good lesson
With my current project I have already managed to get nearly identical results as cycles with Evee Next. I had also reduced my animation render time from 4 hours in cycles to 50 minutes then 20 in Evee. Maybe I'm biased but I think the results are gorgeous.
Waiting for the addon to do all this. 😂
what key u press tp get viewers tab? shift 8? add?
Eevee next is the standard now? You don’t have to find it in the options?
No
Blender team made a dumb decision.
Good to know... I was wondering what was this bloom thing everyone was talking about...
I understand why but I’ve noticed that eevee lags and runs poorly on my souped up 4070 laptop so what was the point of all this? Why have cycles if you just turned eevee into cycles? All my renders will still take forever now anyways. Sticking to 4.1. What a disappointment
I've noticed some serious Eevee lag in 4.2.0 as well. That and the Glare node is not quite the equivalent of legacy Bloom (e.g. the Threshold response is pretty different, bringing non-emissive surfaces into the mix too early).
would love to see you make a halo mega bloks action figure people never do how to on acton figures
Well guess I'll just add this compositor setup to my new default startup file so I don't need to do this every time
Well thank god I used Cycles, EEVEE just looks more and more like a nightmare as each update rolls out.
did add ons Scatter object in Blender 4.2 deleted?
check my other videos on changes to blender 4
why they removed something super simple and quick?! I swear somethings blender drives me crazy!
what?? so now we cant have realtime bloom in the viewport anymore?
Replace a one click option with so many steps it needs a 3+ minutes tutorial video to know how to set up... one of the rare screw ups of the dev team
still not in a sane place like material properties
"Eevee Next is better" yeah no, it's a general downgrade and just clunkier AND runs much worse all for what? Half working ray tracing?
Ugh
Dude this is a horrible change. I miss being able to click "bloom" and have everything look awesome right away. This is way more complicated than it needs to be
Rendering bloom on a single default cube in 4.2 is so slow. This is terrible.
Ok, bye Blender.
What about Realtime?... This is not an improvement.
that's been with us since 4.1 you can go to the viewport shading settings
@@grabbitt I can't find anything for bloom settings in the viewport, have you a handy screenshot of what I'm looking for ?..
@@jasonhall8882 now doing a video releasing it tomorrow
What is this😮
Its so bad😤
compositor is heavy as hell. the old bloom didnt affect the render time even if the bloom make your eyes blind. I hate this 🥲🥲
It's very quick these days
Lol everyone panicking bloom goooone
Yes I think that doesn't make sense 😅🎉
