  • I really love this book and hope you do too! Watch the video and then let me know if the book was about what you thought. Bellow handles a tough topic with humor and intellect.
PLEASE leave a comment below and if you like the video, give it a thumbs up. That helps my standing with RUclips.
I have created a forum for book lovers:

It's not completely finished but it works and you are welcome to give it a try. The website it's on is going to be revised...
    Thank you! Chris

May take more than two or three video to get through it. I’m just now a little over half way. At first I thought it would be a short read but there’s more to the book than initially thought. Of course I am only getting in a chapter a night and haven’t tried to speed read. I’m enjoying this more and more as it goes along

You are right. I had the same thoughts as I prepped for video 2. After a very busy work week, I got behind as I hoped to have the video done a couple of days ago. It's an interesting book and I want to do it justice. It's not read extensively and it's wonderful to introduce this book to you. More people should read it. You give me a great boost by saying that you are enjoying the book! Finding top quality reads that are fun is my task. Thanks for all of your participation.

You made the connection between water, life and death....about the time the neighbor died in his kitchen, the daughter finds and brings home a newborn baby...so there was life in death. I had not taken the time to make those connections but through your video, I certainly make those connections now. The reason I watch your videos!

It's great fun, isn't it! Bellow gives a very rich experience. There's always something meaningful going on. The incident with the baby is a weird offshoot. My videos would be hours long if I tried to cover everything but note the baby incident. It's very much like Moses being found in the reeds and saved by Pharaoh's daughter. And this happens Xmas week. His daughter is the virgin fleeing with the baby.

Chris Reich another interesting analogy in which I would have never put together myself.

I first read Henderson 30 years ago and still think it''s one of the best books I've ever read. It works on so many levels. One can almost smell Africa, feel the heat. Bellow provides the setting without boring the reader as a place for a larger than life Henderson. There's just so much here. And it's all presented in a comical frame that makes you laugh out loud. I had not considered death as an overriding theme, but I see your point.

I am really glad you enjoyed it. Sorry to fall behind with the videos but I have been slammed. Next book will be Independent People by Laxness. I will get us caught up soon.

What I liked is the surprise Greek Mythology reference in this novel as well. Cerberus the 3 headed dog makes an appearance. Very cool

That was very cool. That dog from Hades reminds me of Bloom's trip to Hades as well. I had a hard time with the video because there is a lot there!

You help make it easier to understand the book. And the things we may miss. You are so good at expressing yourself. Just love this.

Water may also represent death, as in drowning. The "I want, I want" likely derives from William Blake, who depicts a figure in his Notebook at the bottom of a ladder, hands up, saying those words.

    Dear Chris,
I am half way thhrough "Henderson the Rain King" and I am enjoying it very much. I appreciate Bellow's irony and his original narrative style. And of course i have aprreciated your video part 1, revealing aspects of the book I would have not noticed. And this leads me to my first question: is there no part 2? I know others have already asked and you answered "coming soon", but I haven't been able to find it.
Question number 2: are you not suggesting other books? Cannot find that either besides "Maus" and "To the Lighthouse".
    Thank you Chris.
    Francesco Mazzucco, Formia, Italy.
P.S. Henderson decided to become a pig farmer in Monte Cassino, which is circa 44 kilometres (27 miles) from where I live.

I didn’t get it as a British teen reading it for A levels. Appreciate Bellow now for Seize the Day but I read that much later in life. Possible I didn’t get the irony so may need to read it again. Much preferred #Malamud at the time.

Could you please help me with understanding the irony in the book? I am not a native speaker. Thanks.

Irony is a difficult concept. I would say the biggest irony is that we have the greatest English novel, by an Irish author about a very Irish town....but the hero of the book is a Jewish man.
