    • Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) became a successful divorce lawyer who was never married, and thus never had J.R.’s niece Lucy (Charlene Tilton). However, he still meets Valene Clements (Joan Van Ark) - in this universe, Valene Wallace - who is seeking an inheritance from her late husband’s estate. They agree to go on a date together, hinting that Gary and Val always destined to meet.

JR Ewing is one of the most complex characters in the villain category. JR..
like all multilayered . narcissistic self serving. But at no time was he ever truly evil. It was shown on multiple occasions with his genuine love for Jock Ellie Bobby and Sue Ellen. Especially Bobby. He often placed them in harm's way with his selfish needs. But at the end of the day he always chose them over himself.
Bobby was the favorite of the Ewing patriarchy. Much of who JR was forged with constantly looking for Jocks approval in proving himself in the Ewing oil business. Ruthless to JR equalled Daddy and he was all about earning Daddy's love. His personality masked deep hurts and disappointments. And complex emotional dynamics. He was jealous of Bobby being the favorite. But he also worshipped him and would swim through sharks for him. Textbook love/hate.
And Sue Ellen.... she was the only woman JR truly ever loved. As much as he was capable of loving any woman he DID love Sue Ellen. When Sue Ellen ended up on skid row and he saw her in the drunk tank it was clear it devastated him. His eyes were full of tears and he HATED the very thought of men crying. The loves of his life were Jock Bobby and Sue Ellen. No one else came close. Again as much as he could love anyone he loved them.
Outside of villainous Angelica Nero the most truly evil character was Cliff Barnes. Cliff was willing to kill his own daughter to advance his own ends. JR would NEVER have done that.
It was too bad with this episode that once JR discovered the true nature of his spirit guide that...instead of killing himself...he didn't see the positive impact that his presence in the lives of those he truly loved had on them. Especially with Bobby.

Some people are saying in this timeline without JR, Knots Landing stories wouldn't happen.
Not true, the major stuff would find a way; somehow:
-Without Gary, Sid would still be alive. His daughter Annie from ep 1 would return eventually as the young trouble-maker.
-Sid's uncle would still die (much sooner in Season 3) and leave them Lotus Point in her inheritance. Abby would contest it to try to gain sole ownership, thus kick-starting her backstabbing business rise. She hates Karen, but still gives her kidney to Diana, thus Sid forgives her.
Karen butts heads with Sid about Abby, saying she's evil. Sid argues Abby still has moral fibre and never cheated with anyone; Karen says, "That's just because Abby hasn't met the right married man yet!"
-Laura & Richard's story still happens. So do Kenny & Ginger, but Kenny has an affair with Annie (see above).
-Mack would be involved with the younger attorney he works with, Jill Bennett! He comes to Knots to investigate Wolfbridge, which Abby was caught in. This also links to Mack's politician friend, Sumner. Soon, everyone is connected 1 way or another.
Wolfbridge tries to kill Mack, but the shooter kills Sid instead (instead of shooting Karen in the real show).
-Abby hates Jill for investigating her. Mack leaves Jill for Karen, and Jill goes crazy and forces Karen to swallow sleeping pills. Jill dies in Mack's car trunk.
-Greg marries Laura, and Mack marries Karen, then his unknown daughter Paige arrives. Abby and her 90210 son Brian move to Japan.
-In Dallas from the above video, Gary marries Val, who then becomes an author. Val gets pregnant and twins are common in her family, but she has triplets: Bobby, Betsy, and Lucy!
-Gary gets sick of the corrupt law business, and wants to invest in clean energy in California.
-Valene gets a writing opportunity to write the biography of former politician Greg Sumner, so Miss Ellie buys them a house on Seaview Circle and they move to Knots Landing!
-Karen and Val become instant best friends; so do Mack & Gary.
-The Cul-de-sac little kids are all friends: The Ewing triplets, adopted Meg Mackenzie, Olivia & Harold's son Danny (who loves swimming in the pool!), and Eric & Linda's son Joshua.
-In the series finale, Karen is shocked to see Abby move back. Abby says hello and says, "Seems like old times!". Then her eyes widen when she sees Gary for the 1st time, and Karen realizes that Abby has just met the right married man...

  • @tammylewis2408

Gary and Val were truly soulmates, though they met in a different timeline. Gary was lucky to have his soulmate, though JR tore them apart and took Lucy from them before they reunited. Jock and JR mistreated Gary because he was more like his mother Miss Ellie, she said Gary "was a Southfork among Ewings"; he was not interested in the oil business, he was more interested in the family home and wanted to be either a writer or an artist.
