Thanks, I replaced the hose and cleaned the EGA valve. It made a big difference. However, my care still shakes a bit at the stop lights or stop signs. I am going to have a mechanic check it out for me. Thanks so much for your good input.
I did not clean the EGR valve on mine but nevertheless, I wanted to shout out a big thanks to you for posting this video. Got a 2003 Mazda Protegé LX, 2.0 with 207,000 miles in it. Bought it new so it's 12 years old. Never cleaned the throttle body before. A few months ago it started idling roughly and after reading a few forums, I decided to clean the throttle body only. Instead of spraying CRC Throttle Body cleaner directly on to the throttle body, I sprayed a clean rag with it and cleaned the throttle body until no more residue showed on the rag. It was very dirty. Put everything back and started the car. Idle shoot up and then regulated back to 12 years ago when new. So, so far, so good. Thank you very much for doing such a great job with this video!
You sir, are a saint. Also, in case it is helpful for anyone, i have a 2003 Protege LX 2.0 L. EGR valve bolts for me were 12 mm, not 10. Everything else is the same. Was also able to do it w/o removing the battery, but did remove the air intake from above the EGR to make extra room and cleaned it as well.
Thanks for your reply. Our car is currently running fine, though it has a "drone" (for lack of a better word) when at stop lights. My wife said it purrs if she puts it in Neutral. A local Autozone has the part in stock for ~$130.
The '03 we bought has only 80,000 miles on it from the original owner so I'm comfortable with some repairs, being that we got it for ~$1,300 below KBB.
today i was changed the plugs and wires also i cleaned the filter ... my car is working on gasoline ... i noticed that there is Improvement in Fuel consumption ... but i used NGK plugs it is good ?? also im using octane 95 (( the strongest type of gasoline in my country )) thank you very much eng. john
As others mentioned, remove air intake hose (loosen phillips screw on clamp on each end of hose), remove battery, use 12mm socket on 1/4” SHORT stubby ratchet to remove the two long bolts holding it on ... it took me a while and I was cussing and sweating but I got that MFer off ... I just hope I can get the new one back on!!! 😂🤣😂
Great vid. Could you tell me how to tell if it is functioning? I removed mine because of Po300 code too and am cleaning it. How do I know if it needs to be replaced?
Hi Johnnysshop! First off, thanks for all the great Protégé videos, they have helped this weekend warrior a ton! After replacing both the plugs, wires, and coils on my rough idling 2003, I decided to tear into the IAC, throttle body, and EGR to clean them all. Finally got the EGR off (for those having issues, a 3/8 12mm short handle socket finally did the trick after I got everything else out including the battery) and am trying to clean it. At first it was locked pretty hard and had to use a screw driver to pry it open from the inside. After lots of brake cleaner, wondering how "loose" this valve should end up being? I can move it in with my thumbs from the outside, and with a screw driver from the inside without much pressure, but it isn't like it just slides back and forth without any tension. Just wondering how much tension there should normally be in this valve/spring as I'd hate to put it all back together only to get a new one. Anyway, thanks again for all the help!
i did erase them , but they keep coming back :) my question was did your problem got fixed after the EGR or not .... i dont think it is the coil on mine , the computer is the one that turn some of the cyl off because of the codes that is receiving ...trying to prevent the engine from bigger damage ....i think ?!
. Hi - I am having the exact same problem and I cannot get the EGR out to clean it; I cannot get the leverage to get the bolts off. If you don't mind - what kind of flexible socket wrench did you use? There are several different styles on amazon and I'd like to know what you used. (And thanks to Johnnysshop for the video)
There's actually 2 types of EGR valves made for these years of Mazda Protégé's now John. There a Canadian Emissions one that has 3 hoses, a coolant by-pass, an IAC by-pass and a vent hose OR US Emissions that looks like yours only with stainless steel guts. $150. Cheers!
how do i know whether or not i need to clean it or replace it completely? btw watched the vid that explained pcv and plug video and i was abloe to do it myself..
How long had you had this problem before fixing it? I wondering if a gunky EGR can do damage or just lessens performance. I just bought a low mileage '03 Protege5 for well under KBB from a friend. The Check light is on and I'm going to replace the EGR but can't do it for another week and my wife needs the car to get around town.
hello mr john .. i bought mazda protege 323 2002 model .... its fuel consumption is very high its about 20L per 100Km and its engine is just 1600cc ... can you help me to know how to make the fuel consumptiom low as like as mitsubishi lancer or toyota yaris .. thanks for helping
I have an 02 protege and it makes a pinging sound when accelerating around 2000-2500 rpm. I'm thinking it could be this egr valve because i hear something clicking when the car is idling. My intake hose also has cracks in it but it is duct taped for the time being. Do you have any idea what it could be?
I tried removing it yesterday with no success. Very hard to get to and no room to move the ratchet. Also seems like the 12mm socket was too small. Anymore suggestions?
How the hell did you get that EGR valve out of there? There's no room to do anything down there. I can't even turn my mini wrench down there. What'd you use?
my 2001 mazda protoge' has began to shake when I am at the stop light or stop sign. My check engine light has been flashing. There was a crack on the hose connect to the EGR valve. I patched it up with electrical tape It made a small difference in the performance of the car but the check engine light keeps flashing. What could it be? Sensors??? Any suggestions?
Ok, so I'm a new Mazda owner with a 1999 Protégé 1.8L. Had my engine code ran today and it came back as the EGR (I didn't think to ask for the actual code number). Anyway, how do I reset the check engine light once I fix the EGR?
***** so you just removed that hose and removed the EGR after that? Those two bolts are a pain in the ass to unscrew. I still don't know how to get 'em off
I have a 2000 Protege. Sometimes when the car is cold, as soon as i put it in Drive the o/d light starts blinking and the car is stuck in limp mode after that. I changed the transmission filter and the problem is less frequent, but still happens. Check Engine light is not on. Any idea what the problem may be?
also i need to fix this on my car but dont really think this vid helped as much i only know the location now but dont know how to remove it etc what tools to use
Video? You didn't show how to take out or replace the EGR Unit! You didn't how how to off the intake hose either ! Know what I mean? Your videos are usually pretty good John but not this one, Sorry!!
Can't win em all. Intake hose is just a clamp, pretty self explanatory. It was basically impossible for me to film the EGR, wish I could have gotten better footage.
I have 1998 Mazda protege and it just turned off on me this morning omw home from work idk WhY, also this morning omw to work when I would stop at a light it would take a while before it would pick up speed
Hi Johny , i have protege5 with the same problems (codes ). Before i had only P0300 i replaced the Cat ( it was gone ) and plugs , and now im getting P0421 and P0300 . So did the EGR fixed yours or you had to go any further ....???? My both O2's are working - voltage is changing constantly up n down.....so i dont know what else could be ..... ?!?!?!
got a 2003 protégé 5, got a code for cyl 4, changed all plugs, coils, wires, code reader changed to #2 cyl, changed all fuel injectors and nothing, finally took it to a shop for them to tell me it was a plug wire, 3 days later code reader changed to # 1, WTF is goin on with this car, took the egr valve off cleaned it and it was fine. reversed coils still reads # 1, neg ground to motor is fine, new batt,, im at a total loss what it could be other than it is one of the worst cars I have ever owned. please help.
You're having per-igition in your cylinders. If you remove the spark plugs you'll probably notice that the top of your cylinders are coated with a lot of carbon. I have the same issue. Its stems from worn out valve bushing and you motor is burning oil. The only way to fix it is with a head rebuild. It happens over time because most bushings are just made from brass. I'd take your car to a mechanic that deals with Head rebuilds and they can diagnose it better for you... Just my .10 Cents.
Thanks, I replaced the hose and cleaned the EGA valve. It made a big difference. However, my care still shakes a bit at the stop lights or stop signs. I am going to have a mechanic check it out for me. Thanks so much for your good input.

You're a good man...Thanks for showing us how simple it is to perform these fixes on our Mazda's......Thanks for your time!!

Good video for saving me time. Now i know where to find the damn thing Thanks..
Thanks for the video. We are going to tackle this next weekend - with luck & time.
+Michelle Delgadillo Thanks for watching and good luck!

Does the egr gasket need to be "wet" installed and do the bolts have a torque or is it just good and tight? Thanks for your help and love your vids.
great information! do your tutorials also work for the protege5? everything looks the same under the hood so far.
today i was changed the plugs and wires also i cleaned the filter ... my car is working on gasoline ... i noticed that there is Improvement in Fuel consumption ... but i used NGK plugs it is good ?? also im using octane 95 (( the strongest type of gasoline in my country ))

So sorry for the delay! That sounds about right from what I remember. It took some pressure to move it but not a ton.
i did erase them , but they keep coming back :)

Did it fix your issues? I know this is an old video. But I'm working on a similar problem with an 01 protege.

I have a whistle at higher rpm's in my 2002 Protégé5. Between 4000-5500 any idea on what may he the reason? Bad Pcv value wouldn't be the result?
I tried removing it yesterday with no success. Very hard to get to and no room to move the ratchet. Also seems like the 12mm socket was too small. Anymore suggestions?
hi johnny! my protege's rpm goes up and down during idle do you think this will solve the problem? Thank you.
How the hell did you get that EGR valve out of there? There's no room to do anything down there. I can't even turn my mini wrench down there. What'd you use?
I got the same codes p0300 then the p0421..Car only runs rough intermittent.Never stalls.Afraid the misfires may have damaged the CAT?
I doubt they have.

David M It can be reset with the code reader. Sometimes they go off on their own but not likely.
can you please tell me where is the (FTP) sensor located at....... i have a 2002 mazda protege 5 which is giving me that code
Hi, my error code for 99 protege is 0402. Will doing this help?
Julius Cesar Not a guarantee but I'd start there.
Thanks but it was actually thr EGR passage. This vid still helped me so thank u!
Can anyone tell me if the 99 Protege is the same as a 02 Protege? I have a ton of new parts in the 99 and now have found a nice 02. Do parts fit both?
What could be the issue if it’s p0660?
@3:22 That was everything that a beginner has to avoid.
Um...how did you remove those 2 bolts from the EGR vavle? Details please!
I wish I could have caught it on camera but it was just impossible. I used a small 1/4" ratchet and socket to get them off.
***** so you just removed that hose and removed the EGR after that? Those two bolts are a pain in the ass to unscrew. I still don't know how to get 'em off
WolfmanZX Yeah, that's it!
How can you test if the EGR valve is working properly???
I have a 2000 Protege. Sometimes when the car is cold, as soon as i put it in Drive the o/d light starts blinking and the car is stuck in limp mode after that. I changed the transmission filter and the problem is less frequent, but still happens. Check Engine light is not on. Any idea what the problem may be?
Not 100% sure. Usually that's a sign of the computer or tranny.
thanks for your reply!
I meant like the cleaning and fixing of the brake and that leak and just getting her broken in and everything!!!!
the maf sensor on my 98 protege is kinda messed up i bought the cleaner and still got the same p106
Could be a bad sensor or have a leak in the supply line to the sensor.
My 2003 Mazda Protege burns alot of oil and throws alot of smoke from exhaust do u have any idea what this coulld be ?
Could be worn pistons and rings.. I'm sure a number of things are possible but that's the first thing that comes to mind.
I was thinking it was just the valve stem seal?
cosme sanchez Hmm. Or that too!
worn valve guides maybe
also i need to fix this on my car but dont really think this vid helped as much i only know the location now but dont know how to remove it etc what tools to use

***** Indeed they are.... Happy owner here
Good news to hear cz i have only 107k on mine. Hope mine lasts that long too
could this cause engine to miss fire
spark plugs
got a 2003 protégé 5, got a code for cyl 4, changed all plugs, coils, wires, code reader changed to #2 cyl, changed all fuel injectors and nothing, finally took it to a shop for them to tell me it was a plug wire, 3 days later code reader changed to # 1, WTF is goin on with this car, took the egr valve off cleaned it and it was fine. reversed coils still reads # 1, neg ground to motor is fine, new batt,, im at a total loss what it could be other than it is one of the worst cars I have ever owned. please help.
Wow, wish I knew of something else to check. I'll see if I can come up with something.
Put up the 125!!!!!
lmao i got tape on my hose as well..seems to be holding up
