This was perfect. I just started making candles with a possible business in mind and I was having trouble with choosing a wick. You explained the topic really well. Thank you!
As a consumer most of my life and now as a true beginner, I say this with NO OFFENSE intended . coming into the research of candle making I’m stunned by how hard you all go for PERFECT A RESULTS. I swear I’ve never known anyone who bought candles to care about some of things you guys stress about safety is important so as a consumer yes, huge flames, soot, too hot of a candle to touch or move when lit, extremely tunneling, and yes I would say burning time and of course of above all we want to smell it but no one complains about flickering, frosting or small sink holes and none and I mean No one I’ve ever known in life has ever trimmed wicks before lighting and never has any issues. As a irresponsible candle lover I must say most candles I’ve used have all been great and that you guys shouldn’t stress so much cause as beginner all these details are stressing me out. 😂
Okay, hopefully this will be an easy one for you if you have time. I have made some testers used CS to determine the correct wick. The vessel is a straight sided clear Atypical glass vessel. Went 8% FO poured went great, the wax is a C3 100% Soy. I let it sit for 10 days. Have you had any success since this video with 1 wick? My ECO 14 failed meeting the full melt pool, hours of burning plenty.
I am such a candle noob so this is great for beginners and perfect to getting us started! This is a very informative video and I love how humble you are. Can’t wait to check out part 4 next 💪💪
First off. Thank you so much for this info since it pointed me on the right path. I needed a wick for a 3” jar witch I filled with leftover finished candle wax. Wicks, where troubling me and of course, not working. So, what I did with this guidance is using a roll of hemp wick, I twisted 3 layers together to bulk up the wick and voila, it’s been perfect. Figured I’d offer you this info. Thanks love, 👊🏼.

Hi, My jar diameter is 2.67 and I'm struggling to find a wick for it. I tried Eco 4,6,8,10 and none of them reach full melt pool Do you have any advice for me
Thank you so much for your valuable information. I have lost so much money trying to find the perfect wick. I am still have difficulties but I will not quit! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Oh My God! You saved my life ! I have been testing and testing and testing for the perfect wick & getting so stressed. Thank you so much for sharing. Lots of love from England
Great video! Your presentation is very clear. I’m new to candle making and have been using 7-8 inch clamshells and old paraffin candles melted with craft store paraffin and wicks . They tunnel badly! An internet search suggested using three wicks, increasing the diameter of the the wick, and using hemp. Also, I was not cooling the wax at all before pouring nor letting it cure. Any suggestions? Don’t quit my day job? Thanks!
I know you said you don't use wooden wicks but you might have experienced this with regular wicks. I poured my 1st candles this weekend and all of them seem to have a small raised mound of wax surrounding the wick. Do you possibly have any insights into why this would occur?
when you were talking about using 2 eco 2's, were you talking about your bigger sized jar? Also, maybe i missed it but did you mention double wicking your 8oz tins?? Can that be done with the tin containers or no?
What if you put a wood wick and a cotton wick together in the same candle. How consistent will it be.I'm searching for some candle wick that's thick to get a thicker flame.I was checking out some videos on tea pot candle heaters so I suggested getting a thicker flame from the candle to use less candles. And using a bigger plant pot to produce more heat. And what if I use two cotton wicks in the same candle to get a bigger flame or can I put two cotton wicks in the same candle ?

Hi lovely, excuse me but I'm new to cabdle making and every new video I watch arises new questions. I saw you using tape for glueing in your wicks. I used that and the wicks would move and come off... do you know of any good stickers? Do you still use them? What gives? I'm desperate about this issue.
Hi Erica! You're such an inspiration in candle making. I have started my testing months ago but I still didn't find the correct wick for my jars. Just a quick question, do I need to cure for a full 2 weeks for just a wick testing (I'm testing cocosoy blend wax without FO now)? Thank you so much!
My husband tells me that I’m being too picky. I’m going crazy wick testing! Lol. I was dead set on CD wicks but I find that they flicker a ton and don’t get a FMP ughhhh lol
You are the best! I'm so glad I found you on youtube. Im new to the candle world and soon will be starting my own little candle business. Just trying to do all the research I can. Super excited about that and super thankful to have you as my guide lol. Quick question, when the candle first starts to burn, what is the correct time that it is suppose to create a melt pool? within how long? idk if im asking that correctly but how do you know its a good burn. Thank you! looking forward to more videos!
Hi! So glad you found my channel too :) From what I have learned, you should reach full melt pool (or almost full melt pool) within 4 hours of the candle burning, this is just a general rule though and could be different based on the diameter of the jar. It’s also okay if it does not reach full melt pool after the first burn (as long as it’s close enough to the edges to where it won’t cause any tunneling)
This was awesome! Thank you! Everything you've described has happened to me and I have wanted to give up so many times. It not only requires a lot of your time and patience but can get pretty expensive too. You prob mentioned this but I think this is pretty universal at this point but eco wicks are best used with soy waxes. I use a soy blend myself and eco wicks don't do well in that wax, no matter the jar or FO. I have had better success with premier wicks and some zinc wicks but I'm still testing as I type and am basically trying to find that perfect burn that you described! Lol. It really helped to learn that a full melt pool by hr 3 is not necessarily a must. That made my night! Thanks again!
Thank you!!! I make handcrafted soap, bath bombs, body butters and lip Butters and thought Oh candles will be easy...🤣🤣🤣 Nope! So much science and testing to it!! Thanks for the info!! ~jc
Thank you so much for your videos they all are very well explained and very detailed, it really helps specially for beginners like me. I have a question , I have some problems with my wicks, and now I understand better about the length and gage , my question is....on minute 2.49 you mention about the wick if is too small it will start to tunnel down the center. What do you mean with “small” do you mean the gage? So the thickness? Because that’s the problem I’m having with my candles . Also that my wicks burn very tiny even when I cut them the correct size. Thank you!!
Girl you are a life saver this video has a lot of good information and you talked about the issues I been having with my wicks and candle making Im a newbie and I been testing 2 months and haven’t been able to get it down I’m so stressed out
With burn times should the burn time always be 3 hours max. or should the 1st burn be longer (say 4 hours) than every other burn? Thanks for your vids BTW :)
Hi 👋🏽 What wick did you use for the clear jars that you started off with early on? (North Mountain Supply 9oz glass from Amazon) I purchased some after watching your video but a little worried about buying wrong wicks. If you can remember the brand and size type. It’s greatly appreciated! Love all your videos they help so much 😇💚
I used a soy wax and I thiiink I used eco 10’s but I would recommend buying sampler packs of wicks so you can test out all different sizes! Just because eco 10’s worked for me doesn’t mean it will work for you :)
When you test, do you have others that you burn longer than the 3hrs/sides melted/full melt pool - so you know what customers experience if they don't blow it out every 3 hours.(Do you find the total burn time to be the same between the 2?) And how long burn time do you suggest to customers?? Last question..... in a jar candle - what is the average burn time to fill the room with fragrance?
So I just wanted to clarify You showed us two different size jars I wanna see you sad for the 10 ounce jar you said to go with the eco-12 and do to Wicks and I believe you said that it does burn a little bit slower but that’s OK. One thing I have a question on was the first size jar that you showed us you said that you did the eco-2 can you tell me what size that first jar was? Basically can you tell me the size jar that you were mentioning and the wick type that went with it. I really like those jars that you’re using so I have research those but I appreciate your input on what work to put in them so if I can get clarification that would be great!
Love this series !! The diameter of my jar is 3.14” and I’m using a ECO 8 as suggested on candle science. Do I still need to double wick it even thought it’s only a little bit above 3 inches?
Hello. I currently use 6006 and am looking into different wicks. Looking at HTP 83 for my jar similar to your small jar in the video. What wax do you use? Thank you so much for your informative videos with meaningful content.
Thanks for your video. Yes, the trick is in the wick! ;). I just placed an order on your Etsy site. I look forward to receiving your products. All the best to you! Love that your adorable dog is in the video, too (I’m also a dog mom). #supportsmallbusiness, #supportcandlecrafters
Thank you for taking time to make these videos. Learning so much from you about candle making. I was wondering if you have ever experience a red streak in your soy candles using ECO 8 wick? I made a test candle using this wick and after curing for 2 days, I noticed a red streak at the top and at the bottom of the candle. I didn’t burn it because I wanted to send a photo to CS. I contacted Candlescience and got a reply that they had never seen that happened. I am using GB 464 and ECO 8 wick. I used their recommendation on what wick to use. I was just wondering and would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Hello , with diameter 7.80 cm which wick is the best ? Eco 14? It doesn't reach the sides of the jar.. or should I double wick it with 2 12 ? Don't know
You mentioned it’s not necessary to reach full melt pool within the 2-3 hours, wouldn’t that cause tunneling? Or do mean that full melt pull can be reached in 2-3 + hours?
Hey I would love your help, I start to make my own candles and still need some help on choosing a wick for my candle. Right now Im going to start using a glass jar and diameter is 2.9.. I’ve use two different wick eco 10 eco 8 on the candle tins that came withe the start kit. Can you please help me, I’m struggling on choosing the right wick.
Hi Erica! Is there a reason you decided to go with ECO wicks instead of CD? I'm currently testing CD wicks right now as I am in a candle group on FB and it seems to be the most popular for Soy 464. Do you find ECO wicks are better for your candles?
The eco 2s burn way too hot while the 0.5 would not create a full melt pool within 2h ....but the eco 1s...burn great first 9h then as they go down they start burning too hot, I use the same metal recipients as you the 8oz...and soy 10 + coconut wax and beeswax blend I created
OMG this is so great! Thank you so much for putting this together. My jar diameter is 3inch, so if i was going to test double wick, do I look for a wick that will cover 1.5inch (so x2 should cover the full 3inch)?
Hi! Awesome content. I love it. Thank youuuuu 😀 I'm seeking to start a candle business and I've been doing some testing. What would your advice be for a flickering wick? I feel I've found a good size because there's no sooting, no mushrooming, but it won't stop flickering? Should I size down? Or maybe add less fragrance oil? Ugh. So frustrating. Lol. Your videos have helped me so much but I'm still clearly missing something.
I don’t mind flickering as much as other people do 🤷🏼♀️ now if it’s a huge flame and flickering, then it’s over wicked. I would wick down and test it to see if it’s more of a controlled flame. But I’m a believer that candle flames flicker and it’s okay, but again it’s about the flame size
Hi Erica, When you double wick, how did you know which wick number to use? I have been using candle science wick suggestion and it doesn't always give a double wick suggestion. I want to double wick some of my smaller candles but I'm not sure what to do in terms of wick number. Thanks :)
It was recommended to me by the guys over at calcandlesupply :) It’s best to get a variety of small sizes (maybe the first 4 smallest sized wicks) and test them to see :)
My head is about to explode😅. I make my own tea light. Plain for now and I have a heart shape glass container. It does not have high sides. I put 3 wigs in do the shape. Works great
Erica, thank you for the information. I love watching your videos. Q? When testing your candles do you use your actual containers for your candles you sell or do you use a specific container for testing?
Thank you so much for this video! Can I ask for your advise ? I have been having no luck with wicking a 3.06” diameter vessel with C3 wax, with large and small CD wicks. Would you suggest i try double wicking ?
Great information!! Thank you! I do wonder how you decided on the size of your candle wick (eco 2 )once you changed to double wicking? I’m having mushrooming and soot issues. Maybe my flame is too big..my jars are about 3 1/4 so I’m considering double wicking...but how do I know which size to choose. Currently using CD 12
I knew to use two eco 2’s based on the recommendations from the guys at cal candle supply. I would just test it out! Try two CD 4 or 5s and test to see which is best!

Hi lovely, excuse me but I'm new to cabdle making and every new video I watch arises new questions. I saw you using tape for glueing in your wicks. I used that and the wicks would move and come off... do you know of any good stickers? Do you still use them? What gives? I'm desperate about this issue.
Hi, what do you mean by wick sage ? Im very new lol thank you
Hi Erica! You're such an inspiration in candle making. I have started my testing months ago but I still didn't find the correct wick for my jars. Just a quick question, do I need to cure for a full 2 weeks for just a wick testing (I'm testing cocosoy blend wax without FO now)? Thank you so much!
Hi Erica love your videos!!💕 What wicks are your all time favorite??? What wick company do you prefer??
Can I ask a random question, How do you choose how to describe your scents for your labels? Do you use the top notes, or a mixture of them? Thank you
I read the notes on the scent and I pick three that I personally smell the most :)
My husband tells me that I’m being too picky. I’m going crazy wick testing! Lol. I was dead set on CD wicks but I find that they flicker a ton and don’t get a FMP ughhhh lol
Do shoe strings or yarn burn efficient or good like candle wicks. Can you use tree twigs for candle wick ???
You are the best! I'm so glad I found you on youtube. Im new to the candle world and soon will be starting my own little candle business. Just trying to do all the research I can. Super excited about that and super thankful to have you as my guide lol. Quick question, when the candle first starts to burn, what is the correct time that it is suppose to create a melt pool? within how long? idk if im asking that correctly but how do you know its a good burn. Thank you! looking forward to more videos!
Hi! So glad you found my channel too :)
From what I have learned, you should reach full melt pool (or almost full melt pool) within 4 hours of the candle burning, this is just a general rule though and could be different based on the diameter of the jar. It’s also okay if it does not reach full melt pool after the first burn (as long as it’s close enough to the edges to where it won’t cause any tunneling)
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo thank you! This is very helpful.
Thanks for such a detailed video! I've just started testing my wicks, WISH ME LUCK!!
Thanks again!
very detailed. thank you for sharing. a big help for us beginners
Hiii! i want to ask where do you buy your wicks and wax from? :)
Thanks, Erica!!! You explained this topic sooooo well.. Keep up the good work!!! Ur the best!!
Thank you!!
Yes you are exactly correct! It’s the gauge of the wick. The thicker the gauge, the bigger the wick, the bigger the melt pool ☺️
This was so helpful
What does stumped mean in candle making? Also is there a temperature we should watch out for when we are getting down to the end? Thanks Henrietta
Girl you are a life saver this video has a lot of good information and you talked about the issues I been having with my wicks and candle making Im a newbie and I been testing 2 months and haven’t been able to get it down I’m so stressed out
Can I reuse my old canning mason jars as a vessel?
With burn times should the burn time always be 3 hours max. or should the 1st burn be longer (say 4 hours) than every other burn? Thanks for your vids BTW :)
How did you learn all this for your candle making?
What about pillar candles? Im looking to do different shapes is it the same with trying to find the diameter because most of them are not round
Memory Box Candle Co Okay great! Thanks for reply!
When you test burn your wick do you wait for you wax to cure first in 2 weeks? Or its okay to test burn wick after 4 hours when the wax is hardened?
Most wax manufacturing will tell you the minimum cure time before lighting. It's usually 48hrs
A candle should never be let to burn for more than 4hours. It's on the safety label that needs to be on each candle sold.
@@vegan_guac Yes, vut.that doesn't mean the customer listens. You should always do one power burn test item imo.
Hi Erica! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. What is the best brand to buy wicks from?
This is such a great video, Thankyou for this video!
Great information and presented well!
Wat should I use for 8 Oz tin jars with soy wax which wick would work best?
What about candles with embeds on top ( succulent embeds ) and 4 inches jars?... My wicks are always drowning
Love this series !! The diameter of my jar is 3.14” and I’m using a ECO 8 as suggested on candle science. Do I still need to double wick it even thought it’s only a little bit above 3 inches?
Not always! I would just do a lot of testing to see what works :)
Hello. I currently use 6006 and am looking into different wicks. Looking at HTP 83 for my jar similar to your small jar in the video. What wax do you use? Thank you so much for your informative videos with meaningful content.
So you use 2 eco 14 for the 10oz Cali matte black jars?
Hi ! First of all, thank you for these amazing videos
It depends on the size / diameter of the candle jar
Thanks for your video. Yes, the trick is in the wick! ;). I just placed an order on your Etsy site. I look forward to receiving your products. All the best to you! Love that your adorable dog is in the video, too (I’m also a dog mom). #supportsmallbusiness, #supportcandlecrafters
You are amazing Beth! Thank you so much for supporting me 🥰
He forces himself into my videos 😅
Just the information I was looking for! Thank you!
Hi Erica how long after pouring can I cut the wick back? Do I have to wait 2 weeks until the candle is fully cured or can I do it after 24 hours?
Thank you for taking time to make these videos. Learning so much from you about candle making. I was wondering if you have ever experience a red streak in your soy candles using ECO 8 wick? I made a test candle using this wick and after curing for 2 days, I noticed a red streak at the top and at the bottom of the candle. I didn’t burn it because I wanted to send a photo to CS. I contacted Candlescience and got a reply that they had never seen that happened. I am using GB 464 and ECO 8 wick. I used their recommendation on what wick to use. I was just wondering and would appreciate any advice. Thank you.
hmm no I’ve never noticed that before 🤔 maybe it was a bad batch of wicks ?
WOW, this info is invaluable.. Thank you so much for this.
I’m so glad you think so! You are welcome :)
You r my fav to hear now. I hear u all morning, while I am driving, while I am jogging. Thank u for all the info.
Appreciate video content! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you tried - Honulian Wiffy Remover (google it)? It is a good one of a kind guide for making money as a candle maker without the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my old buddy Taylor at very last got cool success with it.
Lovely Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Honulian Wiffy Remover (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing exclusive product for making money as a candle maker without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my work colleague after many years got cool results with it.
Winner of a video, been searching for "making soy candles for profit" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Peyaniel Psychological Predominance - (do a google search ) ? It is a good exclusive guide for discovering the trick to be a candle maker for profit minus the hard work. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work buddy got great success with it.
I have looked for jars to decide what kind I want to use but have trouble finding sites , where do you get yours from ? I love the black
Calcandlesupply !
Hi this is wanita from the UK I love your channel and advice - please could you tell me where you purchase your Jars from - thank you
California candle supply 🙂
Do I have to divide the diameter by 2 when choosing the wick size?
Hello , with diameter 7.80 cm which wick is the best ? Eco 14? It doesn't reach the sides of the jar.. or should I double wick it with 2 12 ? Don't know
2x12 would be way way too big. Half the diameter of the jar and see the manufacturer's recommendation for wick for the half. Then use two of those
Binge watching again...thank you Erica for all your info 😘
You mentioned it’s not necessary to reach full melt pool within the 2-3 hours, wouldn’t that cause tunneling? Or do mean that full melt pull can be reached in 2-3 + hours?
Good info by the way. My husband and I have been following you since we started with our candle making journey.
Just so im clear, the jars im using are 3.06 in dia...would double wicking using eco 2 yield the ame results as using 1 eco 12 or 14 wick?
No not at all, I would test all of them and see how they perform ❤️
I would do 4 tests:
Eco 12
Eco 14
Two eco 1’s
Two eco 2’s
I have a question... what if the jar varies in widths? Which wick should I use?
This information was great, thank you. Have you found a conversion calculator for grams?
I just use google haha
Hi Erica! Is there a reason you decided to go with ECO wicks instead of CD? I'm currently testing CD wicks right now as I am in a candle group on FB and it seems to be the most popular for Soy 464. Do you find ECO wicks are better for your candles?
I found that eco works better with the soy 10 wax that I use :) however I’ve heard that cd wicks are recommended for 464!
@@MemoryBoxCandleCo Thank you so much, Erica! This is the 2nd video you've helped me on
Erica you always have good information. Thank you so much! Where do you purchase your black jars? Candle science shipment to Texas is very expensive.
Thank you! And calcandlesupply :)
two eco 2's is for sure too much once it goes down, i remember you saying you switched down to 2x eco 1? or 2x 0.5? help
@@powerinaturebygod i now use two CDN 2’s with a beeswax blend as well!
Erica, what would the equivalent in eco wicks be? I use 2x eco 1s. Any thought? @@MemoryBoxCandleCo
The eco 2s burn way too hot while the 0.5 would not create a full melt pool within 2h ....but the eco 1s...burn great first 9h then as they go down they start burning too hot, I use the same metal recipients as you the 8oz...and soy 10 + coconut wax and beeswax blend I created
plz can you answer this last q thanks
Hi! What size label would you Recommend for for an 8 oz tin?
OMG this is so great! Thank you so much for putting this together. My jar diameter is 3inch, so if i was going to test double wick, do I look for a wick that will cover 1.5inch (so x2 should cover the full 3inch)?
You could test that theory absolutely! And then adjust accordingly, just know that every type of wick with perform differently!
What gauge should i use for 4oz.jar?Just experimenting.thanks
By jar diameter do you mean measuring from the inside or the outside of the jar?
What can I do if I buy a candle that doesn’t stay lit. Can I melt 5he wax and add a 2nd wick?
Memory Box Candle Co Thanks for your response! It eases me. Lol. I appreciate it so much ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Erica, When you double wick, how did you know which wick number to use? I have been using candle science wick suggestion and it doesn't always give a double wick suggestion. I want to double wick some of my smaller candles but I'm not sure what to do in terms of wick number. Thanks :)
It was recommended to me by the guys over at calcandlesupply :)
It’s best to get a variety of small sizes (maybe the first 4 smallest sized wicks) and test them to see :)
Thanks so much! And thank you for replying so quickly ☺️
My head is about to explode😅. I make my own tea light. Plain for now and I have a heart shape glass container. It does not have high sides. I put 3 wigs in do the shape. Works great
Thank you for posting !!!!!!! I so needed this ! I can’t wait till our store re opens !
Ps- 💕 Brodie ❤️❤️❤️
Yay I’m glad it was helpful Cari! ❤️
He’s my little love bug, and he’s also a little pain in the butt 😅
Plz will you help me.... Why bubble candles break when trying to remove from the molds
Sorry for my poor english
Erica, thank you for the information. I love watching your videos. Q? When testing your candles do you use your actual containers for your candles you sell or do you use a specific container for testing?
Yes! Always test with the candle jars you are going to sell 🙂
Memory Box Candle Co thank you Erica. I appreciate you. Stay safe, stay blessed.
Thank you so much for this video! Can I ask for your advise ? I have been having no luck with wicking a 3.06” diameter vessel with C3 wax, with large and small CD wicks. Would you suggest i try double wicking ?
What size CD wicks are you using?
Great information!! Thank you! I do wonder how you decided on the size of your candle wick (eco 2 )once you changed to double wicking? I’m having mushrooming and soot issues. Maybe my flame is too big..my jars are about 3 1/4 so I’m considering double wicking...but how do I know which size to choose. Currently using CD 12
I knew to use two eco 2’s based on the recommendations from the guys at cal candle supply.
I would just test it out!
Try two CD 4 or 5s and test to see which is best!
Memory Box Candle Co great! Thank you so much for your advice and speedy response !
Is it better to start with parrafin based wax?
