I did this conversion on a HRD. Bought the revised E board. The OD did not sound right, with or without the HRM. I finally noticed a flaw on the schematic posted on Luigi's site. Look at the HRM portion of the schematic, and you will see a trace leading from the junction of TR3 and C40A going to the OD volume lug 3 (CW). This trace should not be there. If you have purchased an E board, and have not installed it, contact Luigi and he will send you a few pictures on how to correct it. If you have already installed and don't want to remove the board, this is what I did to correct it. Lift the top lead from C40A, lift the CW lead on TR3 and connect the two off the board. This will bypass the unneeded trace. I removed TR3 and C40A, then shortened the CW lead, soldered one lead of C40A to the short lead of TR3, then installed both. Make sure the CW lead is not touching the board. OD sounds like it should now. I did not install C43. You can install that cap on the OD Volume pot per schematics. Lou is great to work with and he can help if you contact him.
Thanks for the tips, covering the paper-work in plastic sleeves so you can write on it is a No1 tip, also those valve base pcbs might be useful. How long did it take to frim start to finish once you had all the parts?
Between testing the old one down, populating the board, ordering the right parts(a lot of parts for this build aren’t standard stuff that I keep in stock), wiring, burn in, play test, and tweaking. About 8hours. That will get a bit faster the more I do. But this initial one was probably about 8 hours.
Sound quality is definitely a challenging thing to translate through the way I record, which is significantly low tech I must admit. Regardless I still would venture to say these style clones won’t live up to the real deal Dumble, albeit the features are similar. Dumbles touch is what makes a Dumble a Dumble. Which I’m sure you already know. 🤘
I wouldn’t do it any different. I understand both points. I would suggest if someone was doing this for the first time or they planned on modifying it to do the screw terminals.
Which schematic were you using? Something from ampgarage? It doesn’t sound like any of the dumble models I’ve played or heard? Your work is nice and clean though
Mogami patch cable would probably be too big, just a pin to work with inside an amp. The shielded wire in this amp is just standard coax style shielded wire. I think it’s 24gauge core, which is pretty thin. I have since switched to a different kind. I like the “ricenbacher” style shielded wire that Mojotone has. I think the core is 20 or 22gauge.
Nice work!!! Really inspired me.... To have someone else who knows what they're doing build it for me!! Lol I was wondering when it came to labeling the faceplate how did you do that and where did you find the Dumble style font? Thanks in advance
Haha. Thanks! I used a Cricut to cut the labels. The font I just tried to find something close. It’s not really Dumble font but I’m glad it looks close!
@@rtbemt how did I remove the original labeling? I used acetone or lacquer thinner, I forget exactly but just a solvent and it more or less just wiped right off.
so... can't help to ask. the wiring for the majority you used same color into the screw terminals, heater wire etc. does it not actually matter which is which? i didn't see anything to determine positive vs negative. been looking to do a build and noticing that caught my attention.
@@StephanieBastearemail me and I will discuss pricing and options. I have upgraded the way I do some things since this video. I have custom faceplates now too.
My biggest thing is single core wire.. it gives me the shivers. If it breaks then that's it for the conductivity. With multi core you are unlikely to break every strand at one point and so it's a safety net... This stuff does happen out there and if it's your bias supply then heaven help you. There's good iron in those devilles. I'd be more a straight bassman or marshall out of them but that's just taste. And those connectors with the screws... Please no! Tidy job though!
The original fender design with the tube sockets on a circuit board with all the heat rising is just ASS. The engineering team should have done better than that garbage! Your flying lead approach to the tube sockets is credible!!
Why is it SO fun getting a box of components from Antique Electronics? It NEVER gets old!!
