Nestle actually pulled out of the candy business in the US. The few brands they did still produce (Crunch, Butterfinger, 100 Grand, Baby Ruth, etc.) are now produced by a subsidiary of Ferrero.
At one point Oh Henry! was owned by the American Chicle Company in Queens. They made a special one that came in a box and was the size of a meat loaf! Haha! You had to cut it off in slices. My dad used to get us kids one at Christmas. I do think maybe the current Canadian formula is different from the original American one coz I don't remember fudge being part of it back then ... it was very similar to a Baby Ruth, but with caramel instead of nougat.
We had O Henry bars here. I’ve eaten one & not in Canada. Think in areas might still b able to buy them. USA varies state to state or at least areas like northeast, east coast, middle American & west coast, south.....
Lots of soda pops sold IN CANADA are not found in all regions of Canada. Have you ever heard of President's Choice 'Spruce Beer'? Comes in 2 liter bottles. How about President's Choice 'Nectar' again in 2 liter bottles. Found both of these while traveling thru Quebec and BOTH are made in Ontario but I have never found them on store shelves here in Ontario. Please feel free to Google both of them
Aero, Coffee Crisp and Smarties ( and Kit Kat) were all originally made by Rowntree ( later Rowntree Mackintosh) a British company. Nestle bought them out a few years ago hence why we have different "Nestle" branded candy here in Canada. Smarties used to be much better years ago, I notice the difference in them from my childhood ones. I preferred Cadbury chocolates growing up, my favourite being Crunchie bars. Cadbury had a Kit Kat like bar called Bar Six that had 6 smaller wafers but they stopped making them. They had funny ads for them when I was a kid.
These are the best videos I have ffound comparing the differences of Canadian vs. U.S. stuff. Keep it up, man! Liked and subscribed. Coffee Crisp seems like it would have been the winner to me. I do remember heading to Creston B.C. from Northern Idaho years ago in order to find cans/bottles of Pepsi, as the taste is wildly different compared to the U.S. version. Only way to describe it is a very "peppery" flavor. Anyhow, coming back over to the U.S. border, I think the officer was having a rough day as she couldn't believe I drove up just to look for something like Pepsi. Can you imagine if I had said I was looking for Coke, LOL?! Looking forward to 2020, you may want to consider the differences between fireworks on Canada Day versus 4th of July...that is, if you could both meet up in towns where they are legal!
Funny, I once told a US Customs officer at the border I was going for a coffee and a donut at the Dunkin' Donuts and he just smiled and let me go thru without even asking for any ID. Those were the good old days when people and neighbors actually trusted each other. Then 9/11 and politics ruined it all.....
Totally agree! Used to do the same thing just across the border at an old cafe...had the most amazing chocolate shakes I ever had. Would go there just to have one and a side of fries and vinegar
I think the difference is due to Canada's British heritage. British chocolate like Rowntrees are gone (consumed by Nestles) but because Hershey owned US licences to manufacture they remained separate.
you can actually get Aero in some places in the US my local food store sells em (and I remember getting an Oh Henry from a shop as a kid but it's been years)
I've reverted back to my childhood, and like buying Smarties as a treat once in a while. I like the crunchy coating and the chocolate. The colours are muted because they are from natural sources. There used to be a commercial back when I was a kid with a song that said, "Do you eat the red ones last?" I did, because they were gross and were made with that terrible red dye #5 that had a sharp flavour. You used to be able to use the box like a kazoo when you blew into it. Don't know if you still can with the different shaped box, and I am a bit too old for that now, but not for Smarties.
Oh Henry isn't as common as it used to be here, but you can definitely get it in the U.S. if you go to a store with a wide selection of individual chocolate bars. I always grab one when I see them. They're delicious. And I've tried the Aero before. I think it was Nestle's that made them. They were introduced a few years back but never really took off. They were kinda fun. Chocolate, but the very airy texture was really interesting.
I have gotten O'Henrys in the US - in Kentucky and West Virginia. It is the only Canadian Candy Bar I have seen in the US for purchase -- and not at border States! I have bought Crunchies at speciality Celtic shops in Kentucky and North Carolina, but they are considered a UK Candy Bar and not Canadian. I have also seen and bought Crunchies in Panamá, but that is a whole different thing.
I love that Canada is the U.K. but near America so it’s a bit of a smidge of both but mostly U.K with a bit of America. I’m U.K. if you hadn’t already guessed Hey CANADA love you xxx
OhHenry's use to be sold in America en masse. You can still occasionally find them. It's not chocolate either, its a "chocolatey coating". Smarties in the box were sold in America decades ago but just didn't sell well. M&M's were a better sell.
Exactly! A lot of American chocolate bars arnt really chocolate...no cacao. Which is why they’re called Candy bars where Canada uses real chocolate. Something to do with Canadians preferring real chocolate.
@@ys1876 possibly true, but that's not why they're called candy bars - they've always been called that even when they were made with cacao ... don't forget there have always been candy bars with no chocolate, too (like Payday, Zagnut, Chik-o-Stik, etc.). It's just a more general name
I d’ont know if there is really a difference but I think so. Smarties are candies and the coating supposed to have a flavors. Original M&M’s (brown bag in canada) have only couloured suger coating so they should taste onle Chocolate.
Smarties, Kit Kat, and Aero are British. They were brands of UK based Rowntree. It got bought by the bigger Swiss chocolate company, Nestle. I believe Oh Henry originated in the US although it's oddly now only in Canada. Coffee Crisp is Canadian. Hard to find but it would have been interesting for both of you to try 'Pal 0 Mine' by New Brunswick based Ganong. It's supposedly the world's first chocolate bar and hit the market in 1920. Ganong started selling individually wrapped chocolate in 1898.
to be fair. Smarties have changed. They use to be more colorful and the candy was a thinner coating. Red was red. blue never existed. there were brown and dark brown.
They taste a little like Tic Tacs now. The rumour going around was that some of the original colours or flavour wasn’t that healthy. The old recipe tasted way better and there were more colours.
Just bought some special addition Smarties. Just red and white ones. I have to agree. They are way more crunchy than I remember them. Too crunchy in fact.
Nestle is not a US company; it’s a Swiss company. They have separate operations in Canada and in the US. The Aero bar, Coffee Crisp and Smarties were made by the Canadian company called Rowntree until Nestle bought Rowntree in the 90’s to secure their dominance on chocolate bars in Canada. Their chocolate recipe from Rowntree remained unchanged over the decades (Thank goodness). They only changed the wrappers and the branding. That’s why Nestle USA doesn’t make those awesome Canadian chocolate bars. Although I also called Smarties an essential staple food in Canada, I totally agree with Jason, the candy part tastes like cardboard (from the cardboard box).... however the original Rowntree recipe chocolate inside is extremely addictive. My favourite is Oh Henry. It’s got to be the best chocolate bar on earth.
Oh, Henry chocolate bars used to be sold in America, when I was a kid. If something is American based but only available in Canada, it's probably because it sold well in Canada, but couldn't compete with other candy bars to keep a place on store shelves in the USA.
Here in Chicago the Aero and Coffee Crisp are in stores, but usually in the international aisle. Both are delicious. My favorite American candy bar is Reeses peanut butter cup. I once bought a sampler of Canadian Cadbury bars and my favorite there was Caramilk. Caramilk is much better than the Caramello. You should do a comparison between Caramilk and Caremello. By the way, you are right about caramel, but many people are guilty (myself included) of dropping the middle a when pronouncing it.
What's your favourite Canadian Chocolate bar? What should he try next?

Cadbury had a Kit Kat like bar called Bar Six that had 6 smaller wafers but they stopped making them. They had funny ads for them when I was a kid.
We definitely have Oh Henry here in the US but they look different. I’ve had Canadian Smarties before and I liked them. Remind me a lot of M&M’s.
Would go there just to have one and a side of fries and vinegar
u can buy fireworks anywhere in canada totally legal must be 18 to purchase
You can get all these at specialty stores like a World Market. My favorite is Lion, Lion Peanut, and Lion White.
Nestlé is not American, it was founded in Switzerland and evolved into the largest food company in the world.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9
You forgot caramilk which is amazing!!
We had O Henry bar here in the U.S., at least when when I was growing up.
I think the difference is due to Canada's British heritage. British chocolate like Rowntrees are gone (consumed by Nestles) but because Hershey owned US licences to manufacture they remained separate.
American friends always go insane when I send them Coffee Crisp, they love them.
you can actually get Aero in some places in the US my local food store sells em (and I remember getting an Oh Henry from a shop as a kid but it's been years)
I've reverted back to my childhood, and like buying Smarties as a treat once in a while.
I grew up near Chicago and I remember eating Oh! Henry chocolate bars in the 60's and 70's, and it was good.
I see am all the time in Oregon.
Our family used smarties for teaching the young ones their colours. We were all really good at colours.
If I have to choose between Aero and Mirage, I always go for Mirage.
The Aero bar was sold here in the u.s. and Oh Henry is sill sold in the u.s. ( like a Babe Ruth bar)
eatmore is my favourite although its a candy bar (not enough chocolate to qualify as a chocolate bar) also lindt bars are very good
Around holidays like Halloween, coffee crisp turns into coffin crisp with a black wrapper. Smarties turns into scaries, etc
We have Whatchamacallit in Canada, but it's called Special Crisp. It's just not widely available.
to be fair. Smarties have changed. They use to be more colorful and the candy was a thinner coating. Red was red. blue never existed. there were brown and dark brown.
Blacklily Orchard they started using natural colouring in smarties a few years back!
They taste a little like Tic Tacs now. The rumour going around was that some of the original colours or flavour wasn’t that healthy.
The old recipe tasted way better and there were more colours.
But tell me:
When you eat your Smarties, do you eat the red ones last?
@@theguyfromsaturn there are no red ones anymore
Just bought some special addition Smarties. Just red and white ones. I have to agree. They are way more crunchy than I remember them. Too crunchy in fact.
You're crazy, Canadian Smarties are the best!
For the coffee crisps, they use to be available in the states but they stopped in 2009
I remember having Oh Henry's. Are they not available in the US anymore?? Aero is newer to my area like the Kinder Bueno bars.
The smarties are milk chocolate and m&ms are semi sweet chocolate, so they’re not as sweet as m&ms.
It’s got to be the best chocolate bar on earth.
you gotta get him on the Eat Mores.
Oh yuck!
We like Josh, don't make him deal with one of those things
What you give to someone instead of saying, "Eat Shit!"
Actually, Smarties are the Canadian version of M&M's, except smaller than that candy.
If you want more caramel try the Sweet Marie it’s got more caramel then the Oh Henry and it’s made by Cadbury.
A cold coffee crisp straight out of the fridge is pure bliss.
Oh Henry cars bars was in America back in the 70s and 80s I use to buy them
Never likes smarties either lol but for some reason if they are around I’ll snack on them 😂 oh Henry is my favorite as well
